Mrs. JoAnne Banks was born May 17, 1957,  to Everlee Weathers and Bill Brown.  JoAnne was one of 14 (8 sisters and 5 brothers), and was lovingly raised by Duke and Fannie Risper.

Born in St. Louis, MO, JoAnne attended Sumner High school. She confessed a hope in Christ Jesus and was United in holy matrimony to Moses Banks.

JoAnne’s personality was spunky and vibrant. People often said she was ‘hip’ for her age. Joanne was a straightforward woman; she had no filter and no problem telling it like it is. Her favorite quotes were, “I’m for the right” and “I’m going to tell you what God loves.” JoAnne had an unjust childhood but despite her upbringing she lived life smiling and laughing.  Her childhood made her resilient and strong which she instilled in her children.

Through challenging times, JoAnne was always in good spirits. She would play her music to make the best of any situation. She had such a big pure heart; she would give her last to anyone. Her house was the house everyone stayed at from friends, cousins, and aunts to boyfriends and girlfriends.  She would welcome anyone in our home; if we liked them, she loved them, is what she used to say.

Before becoming a certified nurse assistant, JoAnne received her childcare license and in the 90’s, she started an in-home daycare, where she watched neighborhood kids in the walnut park area. During that time JoAnne was a member of Bethlehem Church Of God and was an usher and sang in the choir. Later in life, she started going to Emmanuel Temple Church, and in July 2021, JoAnne and her daughter both became members.

JoAnne did volunteer work at  Walbridge Elementary School for 5 years.  She was there so much, the students thought she was a teacher. She received several plaques for her work. JoAnne loved to cook and have family gatherings. She was known to have a good backyard party or house gathering. Her children and grandchildren were her life, and she was so proud of all five of them.  She would boast and brag about them to everyone.

JoAnne loved to travel, and her favorite place to vacation was Vegas. She loved listening to all genres of music from Rap, R&B, Blues to Gospel. Her home was her sanctuary, and she loved to relax and stroll social media or watch a tubi movie.

JoAnne was a certified nursing assistant for 30 plus years and retired in 2020. Throughout her career in the nursing field, Joanne met a host of friends including her best friend Nellie Smith.  JoAnne had a passion for her work and took pride in it. In the nursing field JoAnne was known to have a Pepsi and sunflower seeds and the first person to clock in and the last person to clock out. She believed in treating others as you want to be treated. Some of the residents often referred to her as mama. She would bring them leftovers from time to time and buy personal care items to make sure the residents had everything needed.  She brought joy to any room she walked into, and was truly a good person, beautiful inside and out, and touched so many lives.

JoAnne departed this life on January 13, 2023 at 7:30am. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, foster parents, husband, twin sister Jeanette Brown, two other sisters and four brothers, grandson MartraVion Deshun Sims,  granddaughter Queen Ameya Emonie Banks, two nephews and one niece.

JoAnne leaves to cherish memories her children Michael (Stacey) Coleman, Emanuel (Tameya) Banks, Mona (Antoine) Banks, Terrence Wright and David Jones; Grandchildren Kamea Banks, Michael Wright , Damien Dixon , Matthew Coleman, Mikesha Coleman, Zorian Coleman, Layana Randle, and Emanuel Banks, Jr. and a host a family and friends.
