Born on August 5, 1954, in Johnstown, NY, he was the son of the late Raymond and Jackie Jarabek.
Rick's early years in his hometown were filled with athletics as he graduated from Johnstown High School in 1972 having been an active member of the football and wrestling teams. Rick's drive and commitment extended far beyond collegiate sports as he joined the United States Marines in 1978, serving his country with the same passion and vigor with which he approached life. During his six years of service, Rick proudly represented the Marines on the wrestling mat as well.
After his honorable discharge in 1984, Rick did not slow down but instead shifted gears, literally. He embraced long distance bike riding, sometimes just for fun and sometimes competition. On the days when he was not on the road, Rick could be found cheering on his favorite team, the New York Giants.

Rose Mary Russ - August 17, 1940 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (Johnstown)
Obituary Preview: Rose Mary ("it's two words," she often told, or had to tell, people) was born at the original Littauer Hospital, in Gloversville, to salt-of-the-earth parents of Slovak origin: her father was born in Gloversville, her mother was a naturalized immigrant from Borsky' Sväty' Jur, Slovakia. Growing up, she resided at several locations in Johnstown, ending up on Hall Avenue. She attended various Johnstown schools, graduating from Johnstown High School in 1958.
In 1963, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Catholic University (Washington, DC), and began working in the laboratories at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD). During this time, she met her future husband who sensed, after talking to her for only a few minutes at a party (neither of them was a partygoer), that she had a beautiful soul. This intuition, along with their common Faith, would prove instrumental in maintaining the integrity of their 59-year marriage. Her constant companions over that duration were a wedding ring on her finger, and a crucifix and, sometime later, a Kateri Tekakwitha relic, both on a necklace.
After being married in St Anthony's church in Johnstown NY on December 28, 1965, she moved to California with her husband, worked for a short time at Naval Air Station Alameda, and soon began a family. She raised their two children, Barbara Ann and Stephen, as a stay-at-home Mom, taking pride in participating in her children's activities. Once the children were older, she went back to college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, after which she worked as a Registered Nurse for the Veterans Association and as a Visiting Nurse, caring for hospice patients and later becoming certified as a wound/ostomy/continence nurse (WOCN).
Aside from her family and nursing career, she had a variety of interests and talents. She was bilingual, speaking both English and Slovak from a very early age; played the accordion (well enough to be on the radio); dabbled in painting; enjoyed cooking (keeping many of the Slovak food traditions alive for her family); and had a talent for cake decorating. She loved to sew (a skill she learned from her mother) and delighted in making matching outfits for her and her children, particularly for special occasions. She was a fervent bird watcher, loved reading (especially murder mysteries), and enjoyed collecting ceramic figurines of Western Native Americans. She also enjoyed listening to, especially, crooners (Sinatra, Bennett, Buble'), and loved classical and Slovak folk music.
She was a woman of great faith and participated in many Bible study courses. She was involved in her parish activities, serving as an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister and doing Bereavement Ministry. During her employment as a parish nurse, her medical screenings saved the life of at least one parishioner.
During her lifetime, she suffered many physical ailments and numerous surgeries but despite all these challenges, she bore her suffering with grace. "Offer it up" she would say. Notwithstanding her own suffering, she was keenly sensitive to other people's needs and desires. Her words were gentle, friendly, and especially, guileless. She truly espoused the values of her Christian faith.
Shortly before 2013 she moved with her husband from their home in Spencerville, MD to her family home on Hall Avenue in Johnstown.
Survivors include her husband Joseph, daughter Barbara Ann (Jerome) Stout and son Stephen (Catalina Sawyer), in-laws Francis (Joanne) Bellino, Paul (Patricia) Leskar, cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as numerous friends. She was predeceased by her father Mark Simek and mother Theresa (Muska) Simek.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Barter and Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, NY.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Holy Trinity Church, 205 Glebe Street, Johnstown NY.
Interment will immediately follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Northeast Avenue, Johnstown, NY. Condolences to the family may be made online by visiting our website at www.agcolefuneralhome.com Nech je s Bohom, Jeho anjelmi a Jeho svätymi

Rosemary Walsh - August 13, 1950 - August 19, 2023

Departed: 08/19/2023 (Johnstown)
Obituary Preview: Rosemary Walsh passed away August 19, 2023 at her home in Sarasota, FL with her loving family by her side.
She was born August 13, 1950 in East Chicago, IN to Edward Eugene and Coletta Nadyne Knight, the fourth of six children.
She attended St Mary’s Catholic Grade School and Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, IN and Holy Cross School of Nursing in South Bend, IN, where she met her husband of 52 years, Terrence, having married on August 14, 1971, in East Chicago, IN. They moved briefly to Gloversville, NY, before moving to Johnstown, NY where they raised their children Patrick (Jennifer) Walsh of Six Mile, SC, Timothy Walsh of Sarasota, FL, and Bridget (Jason) Goetz, of Pittsburgh, PA, who survive.
She worked as an RN at Johnstown and Nathan Littauer Hospitals and helped found Mountain Valley Hospice of Gloversville, before moving to Florida in 1998, where she continued to work as a Hospice RN at Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota and Suncoast Hospice of Clearwater, before retiring full time in 2019 to care for her Mother-In-Law, Dorothy Walsh, now deceased. She was a revered nurse noted for her compassion, honesty, and care under often difficult circumstances for patients and their families.
She also devoted her time to helping the less fortunate as a volunteer for Angel’s Attic, Caritas, and Guardian Ad Litem. She was a lifelong communicant at her parishes, St. Patrick’s of Johnstown and St. Martha’s of Sarasota. Rosemary was a joyful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and cousin. Her sense of humor, sometimes irreverent, but always candid, brought laughter to any gathering of family or friends. But she especially enjoyed the little ones, “Momo” to the grandkids and “Oh Wonderful and Beautiful Aunt Rosemary” to the numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she privately advised they were her favorite. They especially loved when she would plot something “naughty” but would justify it by proclaiming she wasn’t spoiling them, but rather she was being just very accommodating. She has left behind love, compassion, and laughter. She made the world a better place and will be sorely missed both at gatherings and privately.
In addition to her husband and children, Rosemary is survived by her nine grandchildren, Mary Cate (Kealan) and John Walsh, Liam (Jennifer), Kathryn, Margaret, Rebecca, Noah, Nathan, and Jacob Goetz, one great grandchild, Bridget Ann Goetz, a sister, Mary Ellen Maddox of Redding, CA, and brother Patrick Knight of Milwaukee, WI, sisters-in-law Sharon (Ron) Salluzzo, Denise Walsh, and Elizabeth Connolly, numerous close nieces, nephews, and cousins, and her special little friend, Scout Reid. Rosemary’s parents, brothers John, Thomas, and James, sister-in-law Patricia Knight, father-in-law Carrol Walsh, and brothers-in-law William Maddox, Thomas Walsh, and Timothy Connolly, all predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Holy Trinity Church, 205 Glebe St, Johnstown, NY 12095.
Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown.
Any memorial contributions in her name may be made to Mountain Valley, Tidewell, or Suncoast Hospice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Barter and Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, New York. Condolences to the family may be made online by visiting our website at www.agcolefuneralhome.com
