Obituary Preview: Benilda Aponte Hernandez, age 74, sadly and unexpectedly passed away on February 17, 2024 in Springfield, MA as the result of an accident in Holyoke, MA. She was born on January 4th, 1950 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, to Aurora Hernandez and Jovino Aponte. Benilda was a proud resident of Holyoke, Massachusetts. She was a City of Holyoke employee for 21 years with the Holyoke Public Schools, where she enjoyed serving meals to the young students of the city, retiring in 2015. A beloved and faithful member of the Catholic church community of Saint Jerome Church, she dedicated time to visiting those who were ill and in need.

Benilda was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and family and embraced every moment she could with them. She loved to garden and cook, always keeping an immaculate home. Most of all, she praised God and loved her family in whom she instilled strong and unforgettable values. Benilda is survived by her three children: Zoraida Nieves (spouse Carlos Rodriguez), Hector Luis Santos (fiance Sherrie Scalona), and Yesenia Aponte. She was a proud grandmother to Yenitza Ortiz (deceased), Carlos Omar Rodriguez, Hector Luis Santos Aponte, Vanessa Rodriguez, Amos, Aric, and Siannah Santos. She also leaves great-grandchildren Aztiney Caudle; Ayden Ortiz; Raymond, Zionel and Valeria Lozada; and Noah, Deven and Dylan Cabrera, and step-grandchildren Timmy Scalona; and Joey, Billy, Ally, Matty, Adry and Abby Dumoulin. She was also the sister to Amparo, Pedro, Luis, Miguel, Raul, Jose A. Aponte, and her deceased siblings Noelia, Felipe and Carlos Aponte.

Visitation will be held at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA 01040, on Sunday, February 25, 2024 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Jerome Church, 169 Hampden Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 on Monday, February 26th, 2024 at 10am.

Obituary Preview: Efrain Hocog, 65, of the Willimansett area of Chicopee, MA, passed away Monday, February 12, 2024, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, due to unforeseen complications from a heart transplant.  Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife Wendy Hocog (Gallup), his son Daniel J. Hocog, bonus children Michael S. LaFlamme, Elaina M. Pos (LaFlamme), Father, Prisco Manglona, brothers, Robert and Luis Hocog, Raymond (Consolacion) Sakisat, Joseph (Teresa) Sakisat, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his mother, Maria Hocog of Rota, CNMI.

Efrain was a well-travelled man and called many places home before he settled in the Chicopee Community. Next to his family, Efrain was most proud of his 20-year military service (1980-2000) as a member of the Army’s 82nd Airborne, Ranger Infantry Division.

He enjoyed taking excursions to Northern Vermont and the beaches of Maine. He proudly took care of his family, creating and introducing them to food from his childhood, doing crossword puzzles, reading, and enriching his knowledge. Efrain was the foundation of his family, and his absence will create an unfillable void.

Obituary Preview: Maureen (Murphy) McDonnell, age 79, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.  Maureen was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late James Edward Murphy and Sophie (Dubchak) Murphy. She was a graduate of Saint Jerome High School and she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Our Lady of the Elms College.  Maureen was a longtime parishioner of Saint Jerome Parish.  She is survived by her husband and best friend of 57 years, James R. McDonnell of Holyoke.   Maureen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Maureen was a loving mother to Lisa Vidal and her husband Michael of North Attleboro, MA ;  Kevin McDonnell and his wife Melissa of Chicopee; Lori McKenna and her husband Patrick of Holyoke ; Maureen Young and her husband Adam of Holden, MA; and her grandchildren Paige, Thomas, Emilee, Seth, Luke, Grace, Miranda, Brandon, Meghan, and Ryan and her great grandson, Landen.

Maureen was an avid baker and cook. She was a faithful follower of The Yankee Kitchen, hosted by Gus Saunders; she would listen to the show, take notes on any recipe she thought her family would enjoy, and then experiment with a new dish or dessert; everything she cooked or baked was devoured as it was delicious. Maureen loved to read, with mysteries being her favorite genre, she loved to garden, crochet, word search puzzles, take rides with her husband, and watch the Boston Red Sox.  She enjoyed crafting and reading with her children and later her grandchildren. Maureen loved her family, caring for them was her pride and joy; as they were of the utmost importance to her, she would spend as much time with them as she could.

He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Marissa Jackson of Plymouth, MA and her mother, Ellen Jackson of Holyoke, his brother, Edward Jackson and his sister-in-law, Patricia Jackson of Chicopee.

William, “Billy Jack,” was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on December 31, 1946. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Jackson and Gertrude Jackson of Holyoke, MA and his brother, David Jackson of Winchester, MA.

William graduated from Holyoke Catholic High School in 1965. He later served in the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1968 with the 1st Air Calvary, 7th Calvary Division. He was seriously wounded in battle on February 22, 1968, while defending the perimeter near Hue in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. He received a Purple Heart for his merit in that major conflict along with several other military awards. As a result of his injuries, he returned to the United States where he received extensive treatment for his physical wounds and became a Lifetime Member of the Disabled American Veterans. His memories and experiences in Vietnam were never far from his thoughts, particularly of his comrades, who never made it home.

He is survived by his loving wife, Frances M. Ross; his four children: Thomas S. Ross and his wife Nancy Mendel, Leslie Lawrence and her husband David Lawrence, Charles B. Ross and his wife Laureen Ross, and Kenneth S. Ross Jr. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Samuel Stewart; his seven grandchildren: Sarah Ross, Scott Lawrence, Emily Lawrence, Laura Ross, Charlotte Ross, Kenneth Ross, and Ashley Ross, as well as his great-grandson, Connor Ross; his granddaughter-in-law, Jillian Ross, and his cousin, Sylvia Nye. He was predeceased by his sister, Rosemary Stewart; his brother, Douglas L. Ross; daughter-in-law Andrea Ross, and grandchildren, Douglas S. Ross and Allison Ross.

Ken was incredibly honest, brilliant, a voracious reader, and a great listener, who handed out sage advice to his family over the years. Ken served in the Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Sargent, and then went on to graduate from Springfield College. He worked at the Monarch Life Insurance Company for 42 years, ultimately rising to the position of Vice President of Claims. He not only was successful at his career, he was a devoted and loving husband for over 69 years, and remarkable father for over 68 years. He was a lifelong Celtics and Red Sox fan, and an award-winning golfer. In the 1960s, while a member of Race Brook Country Club, he won five Club Championships, and later, as a member of Longmeadow Country Club, he won many tournaments as well as a number of Senior Club Championships. He even qualified for the Massachusetts State Amateur Championship at the age of 67, and in that Match Play was tied against the number one ranked player down to the final hole. Between the ages of 67 and 88 he shot his age over 200 times.

His marriage to his wife Frannie (as he affectionately called her) was an example of profound connectiveness, true devotion, and immense love. That love lifted and bonded the family. They traveled the world together, sharing many wonderful adventures, and built a dream home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which was their special place.

Obituary Preview: William Tulloch, Jr., 83, of Palm Bay, Florida, passed away February 3, 2024 after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Bill was born May 24, 1940 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, the eldest son of William Tulloch, Sr. and the former Hilda Mae Longbottom. As a child, his family spent time in Ohio and Oklahoma, before he graduated from Fairborn High School in Fairborn, Ohio in 1958. Bill entered the Air Force after high school, being honorably discharged in 1963.

Bill married the former Mary Margaret Fenton in Holyoke, Massachusetts on August 18, 1962, welcoming two children. The couple settled in Chicopee, MA, where Mary was a well-loved elementary school teacher, and were married for nearly 35 years until Mary’s death in 1997.

Although best known as a bartender at the old Bridge Café in Chicopee, Massachusetts, Bill held a variety of full-time positions at the Holyoke News Company and Big Y Supermarkets, from which he retired in 2007, moving to Micco, Florida. An avid golfer and bowler, Bill was in several Western Massachusetts leagues, and was a member of both the Chicopee Elks lodge and Chicopee St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. Also preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Paul, Bill is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gerard (Jerry) and Mary-Eileen (Mim) Zayas of Holyoke, MA, son William F. Tulloch of Washington, DC, brother Mark Tulloch of Kettering, Ohio, grandsons Nathan Zayas of Holyoke and Zachary Zayas of Somerville, MA and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted in Holyoke on May 25, 2024, at Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, with Calling Hours starting at 1:00PM and a Memorial Service to follow, at 2:00PM.

Kim was born March 13, 1961 in New Bedford, MA. She was the daughter of the late Charles Rocha and Carrie (Henderson) Buckner. Kim was a 1979 graduate of Holyoke High School, and a 1981 graduate of Holyoke Community College. Kim worked in banking for many years and the Massachusetts Turnpike for over twenty years until she retired. Kim was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where she enjoyed inspiring messages and fellowship with congregants.

Kim loved family, always looking forward to family reunions and meeting different family members. Kim had a great fondness for watching westerns on TV. Her favorite westerns being Big Valley, Tombstone and Yellowstone. Although very quiet about it, Kim had an interest in politics, always listening to debates on TV or reading about it on social media. Her favorite TV show was The View, as she loved listening to what the panel of ladies had to say about the topics of the day. But most of all, she adored and loved spending time with her daughter, Shayla.

Kim was predeceased by a brother, Michael A. Rocha. Kim is survived by sisters, Belinda A. Rocha of Springfield, Michelle L. Rocha of New Bedford, MA, Maureen A. (Rocha) Barboza and husband Tony Barboza of Wilmington, NC, brother, Tyrone V. Buckner of Holyoke, and beloved daughter, Shayla Scruggs of Holyoke. All who met Kim speak of her altruistic behavior, generosity, big heart, and endless love for her daughter. Kim will also be greatly missed by several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Eileen Hausmann - May 26, 1943 - February 01, 2024

Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Eileen (Dineen) Hausmann, who left us suddenly and unexpectedly on February 1st, 2024 at the age of 80.

Eileen was born in Holyoke on May 26, 1943, daughter of Hattiebel Spring Dineen. Eileen’s life was a testament to her warmth, strength, and boundless love. Eileen attended local Holyoke schools and graduated from the Holyoke Hospital Nursing School in 1964. As a Registered Nurse early in her career, Eileen worked at Holyoke Hospital and provided private homecare. Eileen’s greatest accomplishment was dedicating four decades of her career as a Registered Nurse and Health Coordinator to the children and families of Holyoke-Chicopee-Springfield Head Start, Inc.  While at Head Start, she left behind a legacy of compassion, loyalty and dedication that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.

Her spirit was a vibrant shade of purple, reflecting the depth of her character and the warmth of her heart. Eileen’s love knew no bounds, especially when it came to her cherished children and grandchildren. Eileen is survived by her son Charles and his wife Jennifer of Scituate and daughter Lisa and her husband John of Pembroke. Eileen had six grandchildren: Jillian, Lindsey, Parker, Sadie, Ryder and Cooper, whose achievements and happiness were her greatest pride.

Eileen’s zest for life was evident in her love of travel to her favorite destinations, her mother-daughter trips with Lisa, her favorite casinos, and dinner trips to her favorite restaurants when she came down to visit her children.  Her joy was matched only by her affinity for warm summer beach days, Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock & Roll, and watching her grandchildren play sports.

She was the life of every gathering, especially during holidays, and always looked forward to her weekly outings with her circle of friends.  They faithfully supported the local restaurant scene and specialty nights such as “Hamburger night” and “Prime Rib night.” They would spend their evenings laughing and sharing stories for hours. Eileen also enjoyed listening and dancing to local musicians.

Eileen's essence, as endless as the ocean she adored, will continue to inspire and envelop us.

Farewell, Mom, until we are reunited in the eternal embrace of the tide. With deepest love and remembrance, Charles, Lisa, Jenn, John, Jillian, Lindsey, Parker, Sadie, Ryder and Cooper.

A celebration of Eileen's extraordinary life will be held on Friday, February 16th at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, with calling hours from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, and a service from 1:00 to 1:30 pm. A memorial luncheon will follow at Wycoff Country Club. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Robert William Goeldner Sr. - October 14, 1937 - January 31, 2024

Obituary Preview: Robert William Goeldner Sr., aged 86, peacefully departed on January 31, 2024, surrounded by the comforting presence of his children, at The Atrium at Cardinal Drive in Agawam, MA. Born on October 14, 1937, in Holyoke, MA, Bob and his sister, Linda Oldenburg (1942 - 2015) were lovingly raised in the Springdale neighborhood by their parents, William and Audna “Honey” (Francis) Goeldner. He played trumpet and caroused with fellow car enthusiasts at Holyoke High School and graduated in 1955. He joined his family's business, Bruno Goeldner Plumbing and Heating, achieving his master plumbing license and growing the business significantly.

Married to Ann Marie Satkowski in 1960, they shared the joy of raising six children: Carolyn, Anita Harding, Gretchen Carbone, Erica Metro, Geraldine “Gigi” Mancuso, and Robert Jr. “Bobby.” Following a divorce in 1982, Bob met Sharyn Caron, whom he married in 1986. Their union endured until her passing in 2021.

Bob's legacy extends beyond the family realm; he played a pivotal role, along with his partners and employees at BG Mechanical Contractors, in growing his family's business into one of New England’s largest union mechanical contractors. An avid enthusiast, he spent over 50 years as a member of the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America), showcasing his skills in open-wheeled Formula Ford race cars. After a major racing incident, Bob shifted gears. Inspired by his earlier years in the Coast Guard Reserve, he took up sailing, enjoying the seas in his immaculately prepared boats from Westbrook, CT to Greenport, LI, and Newport, RI to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard.

Having provided his children with college educations and achieving remarkable success in his business endeavors, Bob retired and, with Sharyn, built a home in Osprey, Florida. A dynamic character, Bob spent summers in Suffield, Connecticut, showcasing a zest for life that included a passion for racing historic cars, golfing, travel, and spending time with his 10 grandchildren (Jacob Harding, Mee Rae Harding, Nick Carbone, Jenna Carbone, Tate Metro, Maya Metro, Emilio Mancuso, Dominic Mancuso, Lucas Goeldner, Annika Goeldner). Bob also leaves two nieces, Christina Oldenburg and Julie Halvorsen.

In his later years, Bob faced the challenges of dementia, valiantly fighting its effects. Before Sharyn’s passing, she arranged for Bob to reside at The Atrium at Cardinal Drive’s memory care community in Agawam, MA. He was lovingly and expertly cared for there for over three years.

Hattie was born on January 8, 1958 to Kazimierz and Marianna (Majewski) Sierzputowski in Zelehy, Poland. She and her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1963.

Hattie is survived by her mother, Marianna Sierzputowski; son, Robert Galazka and his wife Bobbi Jo; daughter, Cheryl Galazka; two grandchildren, Penelope and Annabelle Galazka; sisters: Jane Rybczyinski, Victoria Cavanaugh and her husband Patrick, and Maxine Sierzputowski, as well as several nieces and nephews. Hattie was predeceased by her father, Kazimierz Sierzputowski, and her older brothers, Kazik and Chester.

One of Hattie’s greatest joys was becoming a babcia and spending time with her twin granddaughters, Penelope and Annabelle. She took pride in being a loving and dedicated mother and fully enjoyed raising her children. Hattie will always be remembered for her kind heart, generosity, and caring demeanor.

Hattie was a longtime hairstylist and owned her own business, Today’s Looks, in Holyoke, MA. She also spent several years working as a real estate agent.

Obituary Preview: Joseph F. "Joe" Frisino, III, age 70, of Falmouth, formerly of Holyoke, passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024 in West Springfield after a short illness. He was born and educated in Holyoke, a son of Elizabeth (Bowler) Frisino and the late Joseph F. Frisino, II.  Joe proudly served in the United States Coast Guard from 1976 to 1983 and then went to work for the Steamship Authority in Woods Hole as a Purser, where he worked his entire life. Besides his mother, Joe is survived by a brother, Daniel Frisino and three sisters: Kathleen Wenning, Joan C. Petta and Cynthia Knightly.

Joe will be missed by his family and friends. His doors were always open and he left his light on for everyone.

He truly enjoyed the trips his family would take to the Cape to visit him. Always having plenty adventures for the family to do, such as taking all to the go carts, miniature golf, bowling, as well as going to the beaches with his nieces and nephews. He and his mother also enjoyed fishing when she visited the Cape to see him.

Joe truly was the best brother anyone could ask for. He was available to help anyone who needed it. He had a heart of gold and was an extraordinarily giving person.

His mother was well taken care of by Joseph. He would travel home on his days off from the Steamship Authority to be with her and take her for the little adventures she loved so much. Joe would take her to get coffee and play the lottery. Then they would ride through the neighborhoods where she lived and grew up.

Joe would also take her to the cemeteries where her beloved husband, Joseph, her son, Francis, and both the Frisino and Bowler grandparents lay to rest. He always made sure the gravesites were well taken care of and decorated with flowers.

Joe loved food, visiting his favorite restaurants on the Cape, shopping, and spending time with family, including his co-workers at the Steamship Authority who he also saw as family. He always knew what stores had the best deals and were sure to share them with those he loved.

Joe’s kindness, welcomeness, and joy will live on forever through the memories of his loved ones. His valiant fight against cancer will not be forgotten. His family will always smile and laugh at the little sayings he often said, reiterating and remembering them in his honor.

Obituary Preview: Gloria Acevedo, age 84, of Holyoke since 1968, was called to heaven surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. She was born in Corozal, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Manuel and Antonia (Perez) Marrero.  She was a devoted homemaker and caring for her family was her top priority.  Gloria worshipped at the former Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, and more recently was a communicant of Saint Jerome Church.  She was the widow of Juan Acevedo who passed on July 25, 2006.  She is survived by four children: Johnny Acevedo and wife Alicia of Holyoke, Migdalia Machuca and husband Abraham of Holyoke, Carmen Acevedo and Wayne Huntoon of Holyoke, and Richard Acevedo and wife Jeannette of West Springfield, ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a brother, Rafael Marrero of Taunton, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers: Manuel, Jorge, Jose and Julio Marrero, and two sisters: Eladia Santana and Nelida Marrero.

Gloria was a devoted religious, caring and giving person who always looked for the good in people and never let anyone leave her home without being well fed.  Always known to have Rosary Beads on her, Gloria instilled a strong faith in God to her children and set the example by the way she lived her life.  She enjoyed time with her family and had a special love for children (especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren).  In her spare time, she loved watching the Red Sox, playing dominoes, dancing with family members and praying the Rosary a few times daily.

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to former PCA, Lucy Soto; the staff at Agawam East Rehab and Nursing Facility for the care of Gloria with a special thank you to Shakira, Jose, Teara, Sandra; as well as, Sam and Sonia from New England Hospice for their gentle and caring handling of Gloria, especially as time progressed.

Dick served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. He was a longtime teacher in the Nyack, New York school system, retiring in 1998. Upon his retirement, he returned to Holyoke and has lived there ever since. Dick was a “Barbershopper” and sang baritone for 72 years with many choruses and quartets, including with dear friends Ted Fijal, Bill Simons and Steve LeClair as “Shave and a Haircut.” He is survived by three siblings: Norma Raftery and her husband John of South Hadley; Joan Hart of Norfolk, Virginia; and William Bourbeau and his wife Sheila of Holyoke, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, including Andrea, Scott, Keegan, Brayden and Gavin Kukucka, and Paul Bourbeau. Besides his parents, Dick was predeceased by three brothers: Arthur of Weare, NH; Roger of San Diego, CA; and David Bourbeau of Northampton and three sisters: Barbara Morneau of Holyoke, Elinor Moriarty of Westfield and Carol Burrow of Florence, AZ.  The funeral will be held Monday, January 29th at 10:15 a.m. from the Barry J. James Baillargeon and his wife Linda of Southampton, and Gary Baillargeon and his wife Barbara of Florida; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Some of Linda’s favorite activities and hobbies were attending the theatre, family and beach vacations, and keeping active walking and playing word games. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
