Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a published notice of a person's death, often accompanied by a brief summary of their life story, achievements, and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to inform the community of the individual's passing and to celebrate their life.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in newspapers, both in print and online editions. Nowadays, they can also be found on various websites, social media platforms, and funeral home webpages.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the services. Some individuals even choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of pre-planning their funeral arrangements.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes. A death notice is a simpler, shorter statement that announces a person's passing and service details, usually paid for and written by the family. An obituary is often more detailed and may include a biographical sketch of the deceased.

What details are typically included in an obituary?

An obituary commonly includes the deceased's full name, age, birth date, date of death, a short biography, family details, significant accomplishments, funeral or memorial service details, and sometimes a photo.

How long after death is an obituary published?

An obituary is typically published within a week of the person's death to allow for timely notification of the community and to provide details about upcoming services.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to include this information, especially if the deceased was a public figure or if the death was due to a widespread illness. However, it is not a requirement.

Can an obituary be published if a funeral or memorial service is not planned?

Yes, an obituary can still be published even without a service. It can serve to inform the community of the person's passing and allow friends and relatives a chance to remember and honor the deceased.

Is a photograph necessary for an obituary?

While not necessary, a photograph can be a meaningful addition to an obituary, offering a visual remembrance of the deceased.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, and the cost can vary widely depending on the length of the obituary and the publication's pricing policy.

What should I do if I find errors in an obituary after publication?

If you find errors in an obituary after it has been published, you should contact the publication as soon as possible to request a correction. Most will be willing to amend the online version and possibly publish a correction in the next print edition.

How can I find an old obituary?

Old obituaries can often be found in the archives of the newspaper where they were originally published, library collections, or through online search services and databases that specialize in historical records.

What if the deceased had no significant accomplishments or events to mention?

An obituary can focus on the individual's personality, their impact on others, hobbies, passions, or the love shared within their family. Every person's life has value and can be honored in a heartfelt manner.

Is it appropriate to mention predeceased and surviving family members?

Yes, it is common to list immediate family members who have predeceased the individual, as well as those who survive them. This may include spouses, children, siblings, and parents, and can extend to in-laws and significant others as well.

How do I start writing an obituary?

Begin by gathering the factual information about the deceased, such as their full name, dates of birth and death, and any service details. Next, add personal details, stories, and characteristics to paint a picture of their life. Finally, organize the information into coherent paragraphs and ensure it flows nicely.

Can I add quotes or poems to an obituary?

Absolutely. Quotes, poems, or scripture that were meaningful to the deceased or speak to their life and values can add a personal and touching element to an obituary.

How do I ensure an obituary is a fitting tribute?

To create a fitting tribute, be sincere, highlight the positive aspects of the deceased's life, and illustrate the impact they had on their loved ones and community. It can also be helpful to ask family and friends for input.

There are no specific legal requirements for writing an obituary, but it's important to ensure the information is accurate and that you have the permission of the deceased's family, if necessary, to share certain details.

Can I include charitable donations requests in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers. Be sure to provide the name and address of the charity or a link to where donations can be made.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

The length can vary but typically ranges from a few short paragraphs to a full column. Consider the cost of publication, the amount of available information, and the impact you want to make when deciding on length.

How can I personalize an obituary for someone who was very private?

Even for those who were private individuals, you can share anecdotes or attributes that highlight their character without disclosing overly personal details. Focus on what they loved, their actions, and how they related to those closest to them.

Is it acceptable to include humor in an obituary?

Yes, if it was a trait that the deceased was known for or if the family believes it reflects the spirit of their loved one, humor can be included sensitively and appropriately.
