Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of someone’s death, often published in newspapers or online. It typically includes a brief summary of the deceased person's life, information about their family, the time and location of the funeral or memorial services, and sometimes a photo.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves to inform the community of a person’s passing and to honor the life they lived. It is an important way for family, friends, and colleagues to acknowledge the deceased’s life achievements, connections, and impact on others. It also provides essential information for those who may wish to attend the memorial services.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by close family members, but they can also be written by friends, associates, or funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries before they pass away.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is generally a more detailed account of a person's life, including biographical information and personal anecdotes. A death notice is a simpler, more straightforward announcement of death, typically without the extended biography or personal stories.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. It might be a short paragraph or a longer piece that fully captures the essence of the deceased's life. Space constraints in print media and cost considerations can influence the length.

What key elements should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the deceased’s full name, age at death, date of death, a brief account of their life and achievements, information about the surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any preferred charities for donations.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are published online on funeral home websites, social media platforms, and dedicated memorial sites. Online obituaries may reach a wider audience and can be a more interactive way for the community to share memories and condolences.

Is it possible to include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photos are commonly included with obituaries. They can be a headshot, a family picture, or any other photo that represents the deceased well.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary greatly depending on the publication's length, the publication (e.g., newspaper or website), and its reach (local or national). Some online platforms offer free or lower-cost options.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Submission guidelines vary but generally involve contacting the newspaper or website's obituary department, providing the written obituary text, and paying any associated fees. They may offer templates or guidelines to follow.

Can I include details about the cause of death in an obituary?

You can include the cause of death if you wish and if it seems appropriate, but it is not a requirement. How much information to disclose about the cause is a personal decision and should be made with respect for the deceased and their immediate family.

Is there a standard timeframe for publishing an obituary after a death?

There is no set rule, but obituaries are typically published as soon as the funeral arrangements have been made. This often occurs within a few days to a week after the death.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary?

Contact the publication where the obituary appears as soon as possible to inform them of the error. Provide the correct information and request an update or correction.

Should an obituary include information about predeceased family?

It's customary to mention predeceased family members, particularly those close to the deceased, such as spouses, parents, siblings, or children, to provide a fuller picture of the deceased’s personal history.

Can relatives or friends add personal messages to an obituary?

While the core of an obituary is biographical and factual, personal messages and anecdotes from relatives and friends can be included to create a more heartfelt and individualized tribute.

How do obituaries handle sensitive subjects like suicide or addiction?

Handling sensitive subjects in obituaries can be challenging. It is important to consider the feelings of the family and the legacy of the deceased. Some choose to address these issues openly, while others prefer to keep the focus on the person's life and accomplishments.

Is it necessary to use a template or certain format for an obituary?

While many people use templates or standard formats for guidance, an obituary can be personalized to reflect the unique life of the deceased. The most important factor is to ensure that all essential information is conveyed clearly.

How do we honor someone who had a difficult or contentious life?

Honoring someone with a complicated legacy is a delicate task. Focus on the individual's positive aspects, contributions, and the love they shared with others, keeping the tone respectful and honest.

Is there a way to prevent fraudulent donations in memory of the deceased?

To prevent fraudulent donations, specify in the obituary which organizations or causes were meaningful to the deceased, and provide the correct names and contact information or ways to donate directly.

Can we mention political or religious affiliations in an obituary?

Yes, you can include political or religious affiliations if they were significant to the deceased's identity and life. Be mindful of the tone and ensure that the obituary remains inclusive for all readers.

What is the process for writing a posthumous obituary?

Writing a posthumous obituary follows much of the same process as a regular obituary. Gather information about the deceased's life, consult with family and friends for additional insights, and compose a tribute that accurately reflects the person's legacy.
