Gloria E. Bohen - April 23, 1931 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Horseheads)
Obituary Preview: Gloria E (Jones) Bohen, 92, passed away at home April 10, 2024, just shy of her 93rd birthday. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, April 23, 1931 to Mary (Schwarz)& Frederick Jones. She was predeceased by 10 of her 11 siblings and, in 2014, by her husband Alexander J Bohen and her son, Stephen.
She is survived by her daughter Deborah Bohen of Horseheads, NY and her sister, Lillian Dooley of Lower Saucon Twp, Pa. & many nieces & nephews.
She met her husband working at the A & P Manufacturing Plant in Brooklyn. After marrying in 1950 she left there and had 2 children. When her children were old enough she went back to work at night for Chase Manhattan Bank. Before moving she enjoyed spending her summers with extended family at the Breezy Point Beach Club. The family moved to Horseheads, NY in 1965 when her husband was transferred to the A & P Manufacturing Plant located there. She then got her old job back as a cost accountant. After the plant closed in 1982 she went to work for a family friend who owned the parts business for Corning Glass Works.
Gloria was a loving mother, loyal friend, hard working, determined woman who always wanted the best for her family. Gloria was a beautiful woman who replaced a model who didn't show up for a Chase Bank photo shoot. She loved animals more than most people! She was humble, kind, and generous to her family but never spent much on herself. She was a fantastic cook who always had a big Sunday dinner ready even though she didn't enjoy cooking. She excelled at everything she did. Her fear of the water did not stop her from learning to swim and scuba dive. Her goal every summer was to reach 100 laps in the pool which she always accomplished. She once spent a couple of years crocheting a queen size afghan for her daughter. She enjoyed square dancing and round dancing with her husband. For many years she would be on the golf course at 6am. This past year was hard on her because she could not use her zero turn mower after she broke her femur. She was also much handier around the house than her husband. The look on her face when you gave her a lollipop was priceless. Her last meal was ice cream which next to chocolate candy was her favorite food! Gloria was a complicated and serious person and perhaps a little stubborn. But she combined it all with an unexpected sense of humor.
Per her request there will be no services. She will be laid to rest in St. Mary Our Mother cemetery in Horseheads, NY.

Hazel Everett - April 21, 1927 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Horseheads)
Obituary Preview: Hazel Elizabeth Everett, went home to join her King at 96 years of age on April 6, 2024, having been lovingly cared for in her own home in Horseheads, New York.
Hazel was born and raised in Elmira Heights, New York, and attended two years at Mansfield University. She married, moved to Gang Mills, then South Corning, and eventually took up residence on Country Estates of Horseheads, New York, where she remained since 1957.
Although she had a number of jobs throughout the years, she would no doubt agree that her biggest accomplishment was raising her eight children and seeing both grandchildren and great-grandchildren come into the world. Her home was the hub of every family gathering, and she was the glue that held her large family together. Family picnics and pool parties, holiday meals and celebrations, birthdays and showers all centered around her home, and she always seemed most happy when she was feeding her family. Indeed, it could be said that food was her "love language," and her brownies, pies, and half-moon cookies were especially coveted by the family at these occasions. She made it her business to keep her freezer always well-stocked with popsicles, fudgies, and ice cream for the family.
She was the second youngest of 8 children, all of whom have predeceased her. She is also predeceased by her husband George, her granddaughter Shontae, and her great-grandson Jaromil (Kevin and Hannah) Patrick.
She is survived by Sandra (Henry) Arevalo, Candace Stull, Donald (Sandra) Patrick, Diane (Gene) Thomas, Sheryl Patrick, Gary Patrick, Barbara (Steve) Broutman, Nancy McLaurin, 69 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several devoted nieces and nephews.
Hazel was a woman of faith, whose lifelong desire was to see her children and their offspring follow the Lord and attend church faithfully. She attended faithfully herself, most recently calling Breesport Baptist her church home. She enjoyed listening to messages on television and participated in ladies Bible studies. She found great joy and comfort in the old hymns of the faith.
An open service celebrating her amazing life and the legacy she left will be held on May 4, 2024 at Breesport Baptist Church, 1799 N. Chemung Road, Breesport, New York. The family will begin receiving guests at 12:00 noon and the service will follow beginning at 1:00pm. The service will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend. Please reach out to the family to obtain the livestream link.
In addition, all are invited to attend a graveside service in her memory on May 20 at 1:00 at Rural Home Cemetery in Big Flats, New York.

Gary Eugene Brouse - December 18, 1947 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Horseheads)
Obituary Preview: Gary Eugene Brouse
Age 76, died March 1st 2024, at Arnot Ogden Hospital, Elmira, NY. Following arterial bypass surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY, in November, he suffered from the effects of congestive heart failure, a defective mitral valve and of a long-standing condition of blood abnormalities. He spent 6 weeks at Arnot Ogden where teams of cardiologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, and a hematologist, working in consultation with University of Rochester specialists strove to determine the causes of his condition and to treat him.
Gary was born December 18, 1947 to Harold and Helen (Dietrich) Brouse in Lewisburg, PA. He was the eldest of three children. He graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1965 then attended Williamsport Community College for two years to obtain his associate degree. Gary was hired by Corning Glass Works in 1968 and began work as a draftsman designing glass melting furnaces. He was drafted into the US Army in 1968 and spent the two years of his service in Augsburg, Germany, where he was a Radio Repairman.
Upon discharge from the Army as a SPEC 5 (E 5), Gary returned to work in the Corning Glass Melting Technology division. He trained in CAD/CAM technology and was also a contract worker in Melting Research at the Corning, Inc. Sullivan Park facility after his official retirement from Corning. He received recognition for 50 years with Corning, Inc. in 2018.
Gary met his future wife, Ann Gustina, while they were both active members of the Sports Car Club of America, Glen Region. They competed in amateur racing events and worked as volunteers at the Watkins Glen Race Track for tire testing sessions and several different types of racing events. While not a collector of sports cars, as a young man Gary built a sporty Meyers Manx SR. Then, in his mid to later years, he purchased and drove a bright red Mazda Miata. He was always interested in perusing vehicles at car shows.
Gary and Ann married at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Elmira, NY, on April 22, 1978. They enjoyed nearly 46 years of life together. The pair traveled the United States, visiting a multitude of National Parks, National Monuments and historical sites. Their favorite journey of 8,000 miles took them to 12 national parks and monuments in one trip. They also participated in many National Wildlife Federation Family Summit weeks which included many nature-oriented activities in Nova Scotia, Vermont, Colorado, Montana, Utah, Alaska and Hawaii.
Before meeting Ann, Gary enjoyed skiing and golf. He later took up league bowling, vegetable gardening, home landscape design and became a very active hiker. He was an active member of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference. Gary hiked the entire Finger Lakes Trail, spanning almost 600 miles across New York State, completing this trail twice "End to End." He was working on a third E to E when osteoporosis caused a painful spine collapse. He continued hiking on local trails at Tanglewood Nature Center, Elmira, NY, the rail trail in Sperr Park, Big Flats, NY, and other recreational trails in New York State and Pennsylvania. Gary helped other hikers in their attempts to achieve the E to E goal and, for a number of years, was actively involved in helping to maintain the trail.
Gary was also a voracious reader in retirement. He kept the Big Flats Library busy supplying him with books from all over the Southern Tier Library System. Like many people during the COVID pandemic he and Ann became jigsaw puzzle fanatics who worked up to a 2,000 piece puzzle. Gary was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife Ann, sister Carol (Brouse) Worley and husband Richard Worley of Elizabethtown, PA, brother Donald Brouse and wife Joanne Brouse of Rockford, nieces Dana Brouse and Meredith Worley Zurin and husband Mikhael Zurin, nephew Riley Zurin, grand-niece Kaitlyn (Zurin) Lashinsky and husband Minakota Lashinsky and their children, aunt Emma (Brouse) Foust, cousin Linda (Dietrich) Guiles and husband Bill Guiles as well as many other cousins
Gary's quiet manner, good listening skills and loyalty will be remembered by all who knew him, even by those whose acquaintance was brief while caring for him in the hospital. He leaves behind many devoted friends including his fellow members of the congregation of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Horseheads, NY.
The compassion and caring demonstrated by many of the doctors, nurses and clinical assistants at Arnot Ogden helped ease the anxiety and pain for Gary and his family during his long ordeal. Their kindness will be remembered.
Family and friends are invited to visit the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads, on Thursday March 7th 2024 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Gary's funeral service will be held there at 6pm. He will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, in Corning, NY. Obituary Preview: Kristin Marie Kohena
Kristin was born Wednesday, November 6, 1974 and died peacefully in her sleep at home on Sunday, January 14, 2024. She was 49 years old.
Kristin was the third of three children born to the late Julius D. and Shirley J. (Hilton) Kohena. She was baptized as an Orthodox Christian on December 29, 1974 at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Elmira Heights where she was a lifelong member.
In addition to her parents Kristin was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Clifton John and Lola (Wolverton) Hilton and her paternal grandparents John and Anastasia (Haverlak) Kohena. Additionally, she was predeceased by Beatrice Eisenhower who, as Kristin's caregiver for many years, acted as her "Second Mother" by providing many hours of love and support.
Kristin is survived by her sister Kathleen Ann Kohena of Horseheads, NY; brother and sister-in-law John C. and Loueva M. Kohena of Horseheads, NY; niece Jennifer L. Spicer of Horseheads, NY; nephew and spouse Christopher E. and Greta R. Spicer of Bloomingdale, NY; and grandnephews Tully R.R. Spicer of Bloomingdale, NY; Bevan MacPike of Horseheads, NY; Sage E. Kowell-Spicer and wife-to-be Larissa Goalder of Chicago, Ill; and several cousins and their families. In addition, she is survived by her "Irish Sister" Shelley (Wallace) Mitchell of Northern Ireland (UK) with whom she was able to spend two wonderful summers during the 1980's when Shelley was a guest of the Kohena family.
Kristin was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy before her first birthday. However, her disability did not deter her from living life to the fullest. Kristin was well educated. She began her education by attending the Early Intervention and Pre-School Programs operated by Able-2. She then attended the SCT BOCES Special Education Programs at the Booth Elementary School in Elmira, and the Gardner Road Elementary and Sing Sing Road Schools in Horseheads. After moving to Dryden, NY she continued her education through her attendance at the TST BOCES Special Education Program located at the Darin Smith School and the Dryden High School. She graduated from the Dryden High School on June 16, 1995.
Kristin strongly advocated her for herself. She lived with her parents in Elmira Heights from birth until she turned 14. She then requested to live in a group home. Kristin's reasoning was simple: living in a group would afford her more opportunities to live an active life. She eventually moved to the Evergreen Children's Home in Dryden NY that was operated by the Special Children's Center, now known simply as" Racker". In 1995 she moved to Horseheads to live at the Old Ithaca Road ICF where she resided on Aspen Lane and then Cedar Lane. In 2021 she moved to the Eastburn IRA on Rt. 13.
Kristin engaged herself in many community activities over the years. She was the 1982 and 1983 Southern Tier Easter Seals poster child. She participated in numerous Special Olympics events in the Southern Tier from which she earned numerous Gold Medals. She participated in the Southern Tier's Post Polio and Baseball Camp. She also attended Camp STAR for many years. Since March 2, 1998 she has attended Pathways, Inc. Day Habilitation. Kristin loved going there each day.
Kristin pursued things that brought joy to her life. She loved swimming in Seneca Lake at her family's summer home. She loved her two cats and Anne, her Miniature Collie. She enjoyed riding horses. Her favorite colors were purple and pink. She loved to travel with her family and had visited many places, including Disney World. She loved shopping at Walmart and The Arnot Mall. She enjoyed eating out at Mooney's and Olive Garden. Scary films were always a favorite with her. Finally, Kristin especially enjoyed drinking Pink Cat!
Many people empowered Kristin to live life as she desired. We especially wish to recognize the staffs at Able-2 and Pathways Day Habilitation for their generosity of kindness and patience shown to Kristin over these many years. Your willingness to support Kristin as you did made all the difference in her life. In doing so, you also made all the difference in our life. We have been truly blessed by your actions. The Kohena family could not be more grateful for your efforts.

Wayne F. Kent - June 12, 1954 - December 13, 2023

Departed: 12/13/2023 (Horseheads)
Obituary Preview: Age 69 of Pine Valley, NY passed into the loving arms of his Savior very unexpectedly on December 13, 2023. He was born June 12, 1954 to Ronald and Eleanore (Forrest) Kent. Wayne graduated from Horseheads High School in 1972 and spent his life on the family farm. He especially enjoyed caring for the animals and was an absolute pro at raking, baling, and stacking hay. And from April-October, he often did it all barefoot. Shoes were an optional thing, despite the many dangers. He also spent many years doing construction and roofing, and if he could get away with it, he did those barefoot as well. Wayne led a challenging life. Some of these challenges were self-inflicted, some a product of the times and the area, and some were simply a part of life. He endured, however, with a faith like Job. Wayne was the kind of person who wanted to help and “rescue” everyone. It didn’t
matter what he was doing, or if he was down to his last dollar, if you needed him, he was there, no questions asked. In his spare time, Wayne loved to read. The Bible was always his favorite book, but he enjoyed reading anything and everything. To have a conversatio nwith him was always enlightening, because he seemed to retain everything he ever read and was well versed in so many subjects it was almost mind-boggling. In addition to doting on the cows and other farm animals, he loved cats and was rarely seen without one (or more) nearby. He also spent many years collecting and rebuilding vintage Cadillacs, guitars, and amplifiers. He and his brother Kenny taught themselves to play guitar as teens and mastered the craft beautifully. And then there was his voice...If you were ever fortunate enough to hear him sing, you were blessed. He truly had the voice of an angel and loved telling stories about his trip to Europe in 1973 to sing with the Horseheads High School Chamber Singers. He also sang with various churches and area choral groups over the years. Wayne loved his grandchildren dearly and rarely missed a recital, concert, or special event, and always showed up in a gray tweed blazer.
Wayne was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Ken, sister-in-law Diane (Allen), niece Heidi (Kent) Catlin and nephew Ryan Scherer. He is survived by daughters Sarah (David) Wing of Horseheads, Katie (Jared) Morgan of Wellsboro, PA, son Daniel Kody (Lauren LaCorazza) of Horseheads, and stepdaughter Leona Carter of Elmira. His grandchildren Matthew, Ava, Madison, Parker, Evelyn, Mila, Knox, Benjamin, and Franklin. Nieces and nephews Andrea (Rick) Lewis, Alexis, Makayla, Jonathan, Samantha, Noah, Chloe, and Cory. Sister-in-law Betty Jean Kent, and aunt Luella Forrest who made the best pies. Former wives Norma (Kevin) Erickson and Karen (Tim) Thorpe who were still very special to him as well as ex sister-in-law Carole Scherer. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family, including his cousin Scott who was like his little brother to him. He is also survived by his dear friends Mary Brubaker, Blaze Brockway, Joellen Mulliner, Lenny Kemmerer, John Mahoney, Andy Stevens, Lane Wrenn, Nikki Depue, Joann Schwab, Tom Kaminski, Don at Music Depot and neighbors Michelle and Ryan and their son Ken.
The family wishes to thank Mark, who came to know Wayne through leasing the farm for hunting, for his support and care of Katie and Madison on the night of Wayne’s passing. At Wayne’s request, there will be no services, but he will be interred at the Pine Valley Cemetery surrounded by his beloved Willowglade Farm at the convenience of the family. A Celebration of Life will follow. In honor of Wayne, please do something kind for someone with no expectation of reciprocation or repayment, it will make the world a kinder place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, typically including a brief biography, details about the funeral services, and any memorial information. It serves as a notice to the community and a way to honor the deceased's life.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in newspapers, both in print and online. However, they can also be found on dedicated memorial websites, through social media, and at funeral homes.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by family members, close friends, funeral directors, or professional writers. Sometimes journalists write obituaries for notable individuals.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is a shorter, more straightforward announcement of death, often without the biographical details or personal touches found in an obituary. It typically includes basic information such as the name, age, a statement about the passing, and funeral service details. Obituaries are longer, more detailed, and offer a biographical account of the deceased's life and legacy.

What information is usually included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, a summary of their life's most significant milestones and achievements, information about surviving family members, details about funeral or memorial services, and sometimes a special message or a thank you note to those who supported the family during their time of loss.

Are there specific guidelines to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no set rule, it's important to be respectful and accurate. It's also common to include key life events, contributions, and relationships. Many people choose to highlight the personality and legacy of the deceased to create a meaningful tribute.

How long should an obituary be?

Length can vary widely. Some obituaries are brief, just a few paragraphs, while others can span over a full newspaper column. The length often depends on the space available and the cost if being published in a paid space, as well as the life story and the details the family wishes to include.

Can an obituary be written before someone dies?

Yes, it's possible and also somewhat common to draft an obituary before death occurs. This is especially true for the elderly or those in palliative care, allowing for personal input or to ease the burden on loved ones during a time of grief.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and is not required. Some families prefer to include it, especially if they are raising awareness about a particular illness or condition, while others choose to keep that information private.

Is it okay to include personal sentiments in an obituary?

Absolutely. Sharing personal sentiments can provide a touching tribute and reflect the personality of the deceased. This could include quotations, poems, or even anecdotes that resonate with the spirit of the individual.

What photographs are appropriate for an obituary?

A recent photograph where the deceased looks happy and at ease is often chosen for an obituary. Some families may also choose to include a younger photo to reflect upon the person’s life journey.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published as soon as the funeral arrangements have been made, which is usually within a few days after the death. This allows for community members to be informed in time to attend services.

What if the deceased doesn't want an obituary?

The wishes of the deceased should be respected. In such cases, families may choose to send private communications about the passing and services or opt for a simple death notice instead.

Can obituaries be used for genealogical research?

Yes, obituaries can be valuable resources for genealogical research as they provide information on family connections, biographical sketches, and sometimes the deceased's ancestors or descendants.

How do cultural differences impact obituaries?

Cultural differences can significantly influence the writing and publishing of obituaries, with each culture having its own customs and practices that dictate what is appropriate to include or omit.

What should be done if an error is found in an obituary?

If an error is discovered, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. Many newspapers and websites are willing to correct factual errors for free.

Can a family choose not to publish an obituary?

Yes, publishing an obituary is a choice, and a family may decide not to have one for reasons such as privacy concerns, cost considerations, or a desire for simplicity.

Are obituaries considered public records?

While obituaries themselves are not public records, the information within them can often be derived from public records such as death certificates.

How does one go about placing an obituary in a newspaper?

To place an obituary in a newspaper, contact the paper's obituary department for their guidelines, pricing, and submission process. Often, there are standard forms and protocols to follow.

Is it appropriate to share an obituary on social media?

Yes, many people now share obituaries on social media to inform a larger community and to facilitate expressions of condolence and support. However, it’s important to ensure the family is comfortable with this before posting.

What can be done to personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, personal stories, unique characteristics, hobbies, or passions of the deceased. You can also mention their contributions to the community or significant achievements to capture their essence.

How do families handle obituaries for someone who has taken their own life?

Families can choose to mention the cause of death if they wish but are by no means obligated to. The focus of the obituary can remain on celebrating the individual's life, their personality traits, and the joy they brought to others. For some, mentioning their struggle can help in raising awareness and support for mental health issues.
