Alvin Jacob Weber - May 18, 1938 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (La Pine)
Obituary Preview: Alvin Jacob "Jake" Weber, 85, of Bend, Oregon, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2024. His wife, daughter, and granddaughter were by his bedside. Born on May 18, 1938, in Altoona, Pennsylvania to Alvin and Retta Weber, Jake was raised in his birth town and would ultimately move west and live most of his working years in eastern Nevada and Portland before finally retiring to his beloved central Oregon home. Jake was a dedicated and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Jake made the most delicious blended margaritas and always enjoyed a good serving of ice cream!
In 1956, Jake joined the military and served in the US Air force for 5 years. It was in this service that Jake learned and honed his skills as an electrician. His military duties brought him to Winnemucca, Nevada, where, among other things, he repaired and maintained complex communications equipment on its namesake mountain peak. He quickly became an expert at this trade in both commercial and residential electrical work and was known for his thorough, orderly and highly precise work. His two grandsons carry on this trade today. Jake was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and a faithful member of the Methodist Church.
In his free time, Jake loved fishing, deer and elk hunting, reading, and his special pastime of woodworking. When his grandchildren were born, Jake made each of them numerous special toy airplanes, cars, trucks, trains and animals from pine, alder, birch and oak. These treasures are now finding their way to the next generation, being passed on to his great grandchildren. Perhaps his most remarkable works have been the intricate scroll saw projects that dominated his retirement years. From puzzles to intricate boxes and wall art, his work with a scroll saw was second to none. His creativity and skill as a woodworker has influenced many family members to take up this art form.
Jake met his sweetheart, Valerie Taylor in Winnemucca, and the two were married in 1959. Their marriage was a shining example to those around them about true love, friendship, communication and companionship. Jake and Valerie enjoyed doing all sorts of activities together, from skiing, hiking, RVing and community volunteering, to their cherished trips to the Oregon coast. Their volunteer work included Smart Reading for elementary school children, building displays and assisting with the hanging of quilts for numerous central Oregon outdoor quilt shows, and helping with the annual Pacific Crest Triathlon event in Sunriver.
Jake is survived by his wife of 65 years, Valerie Weber, and daughter, Amy Weber-Salgo, with husband Rich. Jake has four grandchildren: Mitch (Alexis), John (Kaylee), Lauren, and Danielle (DJ); and six great-grandchildren, Bryelle, Canyon, Grant, Reid, Amica, and Tino. He was preceded in death by his mother, Retta Weber; father, Al Weber; brother, Jay Weber; and son, Alan Jacob "Jake" Weber.
He will always be remembered for his beautiful generosity, kindness and calm strength. We will love him and miss him forever.

Dorothy Jane Lapierre - December 31, 1932 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (La Pine)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Jane Lapierre (Riel) December 31, 1932 - January 1, 2024
Dorothy Jane Lapierre, affectionately known as Dottie to her loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024, at 12:45 am. Born on December 31, 1932, in Laurel, Montana, Dorothy's life touched the hearts of so many.
Dorothy is survived by her two devoted daughters: Laura Koester of LaPine, OR, and Niki Schultz of Bellevue, WA. We take great comfort in knowing she is reunited with her only son, Steven Daniel Harris. Her sister, Evelyn of Billings, MT, also preceded her in death. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Amelia "Toots" Demaree of Helena, MT, her brother, Gary Riel of Bellevue, WA, son-in-law Robert Koester of LaPine, OR, daughter-in-law Lindsay Harris of Winters, CA, nieces Julie and her wife Anna Demaree of Helena, MT, Shelly Little of Everett, WA, and Jan Lutz of CO, as well as nephews Greg Riel of Issaquah, WA, and Randy Love of ND.
Dorothy's life was enriched by the presence of five cherished grandsons: Jason Harris of Winters, CA; Corey and Brannan Lewis of Gilchrist, OR; Zachary Schultz of Mission, British Columbia, Canada; and Kyle Schultz of Snoqualmie, WA. Dorothy was also blessed with a great granddaughter Marina Ann of Concord, CA. Each one was a source of joy, and she loved them all fiercely and dearly.
Born to Alex and Amelia (Millie) Riel, Dorothy spent her formative years in rural Montana. Life later took her to California, where she worked at Orlando's Grill and for Lavon’s Food Truck. Dorothy's spirit and love for connecting with people would shine brightly in the years that would follow.
Mom devoted an incredible 7 decades of her life to serving others. Beginning as early as 8th grade when she lovingly cared for her younger siblings, her commitment extended until her late 70’s, as she dedicated herself to looking after our aging grandfather. Throughout her life, Mom poured her heart into caring for and serving those around her.
In Billings, MT, Mom worked at Wong Village & The Windmill Restaurant, and she worked a 3rd job arranging beautiful flowers at Hopper’s Flower Shop. Later, she found herself in the midst of Yellowstone National Park's hustle, serving the needs of tourists at one of its busiest grocery stores. She also helped with the family-owned and operated motel near the park’s North Entrance.
In her later working years, she formed deep connections with families in Paradise Valley, MT, while working at the Emigrant General Store.
If Dottie wasn’t working, you could find her on her golf cart headed out to the garden to be with her flowers. It was her “therapy” she’d call it.
Dorothy found love just in the nick of time. As she entered her assisted living facility, she met a fellow named Popeye, and they were the talk of the halls! Sweet, lovely moments were had, and the shared laughter between them became the soundtrack of their days. Mom, you instilled in us a strength and courage that has served us well. We will be forever indebted to the love you gave us all for so many years. We love you more than words could ever say. May your soul be forever free!
Per Dorothy’s request, there will be no services. She will be laid to rest next to her son Steve in CA.

His mother unexpectedly passed away in May of 1951, after an extended illness from diabetic complications. Allen was grateful when his father married Mary Louise Gutierrez and blessed him with three devoted siblings: Robert Westbrook, Judy Westbrook Smith, and Jan Westbrook Widmer.
Allen grew up in Albany, Oregon. He loved the small-town atmosphere he remembered in his youth. He told many stories of his antics with his best friend and many cousins. Upon graduating from high school, at seventeen years old, Allen proudly joined the U.S. Army; and served two Vietnam tours in Army Intelligence.
After returning from Vietnam, Allen attended Southern Oregon College in Ashland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. There he met his first wife, Judith Holtzinger. Together, they had two children: Thomas Paul Westbrook and Julia Edith Westbrook. Allen worked as an Accountant in Medford until his father approached him and offered him an opportunity he could not refuse. They were going to build restaurant businesses together. Allen served as the family businesses’ CEO, including the Tom-Tom Restaurant, Westbrook Restaurant & Yaquina Bay Restaurant for thirteen years.
Allen met his wife of nearly 40 years, Linda Rene Kreder-Westbrook. They married in 1984 and added to the family: Matthew Allen Westbrook and Lindsay Ann Westbrook. As entrepreneurs, Allen and Linda established a small chain of convenience stores called Stop & Go Market, which they successfully operated for over 30 years proudly serving the Albany and Corvallis area.

Though his talents and accomplishments were many, his life, first and foremost was as an accomplished outdoorsman. His early years were spent boat building and in the commercial fishing industry, primarily in Alaska. He will be remembered for his larger than life character, kind heart, contagious laugh, and amazing story telling ( yes many were even true). His passion was not, just to fish, but to teach others to love and enjoy it as well. Always eager to see even the most discourage stranger become a successful and happy fisherman. He freely passed on all his fishing secrets to anyone needing help, just to see the thrill on their face hooking a big one. Many of these strangers becoming life long friends. Oscar was never without the love and companionship of a dog, having a Labrador by his side always. His love of the outdoors was only match by love he had for his dog. His dog was often as well known as he was wherever they went. That love showing in the passing of his last lab, Shadow, just days after his master, unable to go on without him. He is survived by his sister Karen Hoffman, brother David Hoffman, brother-law Jim DeLoe, and many nieces and nephews. In death he will be reunited with his loving parents Oscar and Virginia Hoffman, and beloved sister Jensina DeLoe, and all good dogs. There will be a private memorial for family to bring Oscar and Shadow back to the lake they loved. If you wish to honor Oscar’s memory, go fishing, take a walk in the woods, listen to the
birds and the wind through the trees. It’s there you’ll find him. “Arrangements handled by Baird Funeral Home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, often found in a newspaper or online, which announces someone’s death and provides an overview of their life, including pertinent details such as biographical information, significant accomplishments, and information about funeral or memorial services. Obituaries are typically written in a respectful and commemorative tone.

Who typically writes an obituary?

An obituary is often written by a family member, a close friend, or a funeral home staff member. Sometimes, for notable figures, a newspaper staff or reporter may write it.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed remembrance that highlights the life and legacy of the deceased. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more formal announcement of the death, often with just the name, dates of birth and death, and details of the funeral or memorial service.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary or death notice?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary or death notice. It is a personal choice, often dependent on family preferences, cultural traditions, or religious practices.

What details are typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief account of their personal life and career, family members, accomplishments, and details of the funeral or memorial services. Personal anecdotes, notable traits, or messages from loved ones may also be included to personalize it.

How can I publish an obituary?

Obituaries can be published through local newspapers, online memorial sites, social media, community bulletin boards, or through funeral home services. Most mediums will require a fee, depending on the length and scope of the obituary.

Are there any templates or guidelines to follow when writing an obituary?

Yes, many resources including funeral homes and online platforms offer templates or guidelines to help structure an obituary. These resources often include tips on language to use, significant details to include, and the overall structure of the announcement.

Should an obituary mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is optional and based on the family’s preference. Some families choose to include it for various reasons, including to bring awareness to certain illnesses or conditions. However, it is not a requirement.

How long after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published within a week of the death, especially if they include funeral service or memorial details. However, the timing can vary depending on the family’s wishes or when the final arrangements are made.

Can an obituary be edited or updated after it is published?

It depends on the publication medium. Newspapers may allow corrections in subsequent issues, while online obituaries can often be edited or updated more easily. Errors should be corrected as promptly as possible.

What tone should an obituary convey?

Should funerals or memorial service details be included in an obituary?

How does one handle an obituary for someone who lived a contentious life?

Writing an obituary for someone with a contentious past can be challenging. It is important to strike a balance between honesty and respect for the deceased and their family. Can obituaries be personalized with stories or quotes?

Absolutely. Including personal stories, favorite quotes, or messages from loved ones can add a unique and touching element to an obituary, allowing the personality of the deceased to shine through.

What should one do with negative comments on an online obituary?

Handling negative comments on an online obituary can be difficult. It’s advisable to ignore the comments or ask the website administrator to remove them. Maintaining the obituary as a respectful space to honor the deceased is paramount.

What are the benefits of having an obituary?

An obituary serves multiple purposes: it formally announces the passing, honors the life of the deceased, provides a historical record, and informs the community of the funeral or memorial arrangements. It also offers a form of closure for the bereaved family and friends.

Can a family member object to the contents of an obituary?

Yes, if a family member finds the contents of an obituary objectionable, they should express their concerns to the person who wrote or published it. Ideally, the obituary should be a consensus representation of the deceased’s life agreed upon by close family members.
