Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often including a brief biography of the deceased. It is commonly published in newspapers and on memorial websites to inform the community and honor the person who has passed away.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are an important part of the grieving process, serving as a public tribute to the deceased and allowing friends, family, and the community to acknowledge the loss and celebrate the life of the individual.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary is typically written by a close family member or friend of the deceased. Sometimes, if preplanned, the individual may write their own obituary. In certain cases, a funeral director or professional writer may be enlisted to assist in crafting the obituary.

What details are included in an obituary?

Standard details include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief account of their life, achievements, and contributions, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving family members. Personal anecdotes or messages may also be included.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is a brief announcement of death, often including funeral arrangements, and is usually paid for by the family. An obituary is a more detailed account of the person's life and is typically editorial content not paid for.

How do you write a good obituary?

A good obituary respectfully celebrates the life of the deceased, highlights key life achievements, includes pertinent family details, and provides necessary information about funeral or memorial services. Clarity, brevity, and accuracy are fundamentally important in writing a good obituary.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it usually ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. It should be concise enough to convey meaningful information without overwhelming the reader.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days after death to allow time for the community to be informed of the funeral or memorial service dates, though it can vary according to individual circumstances and publication schedules.

Can an obituary be published before the funeral?

Yes, obituaries are often published before the funeral to inform people of the service details so they can make arrangements to attend. This also allows friends and extended family to express their condolences and support.

How do you submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers provide specific guidelines for submitting obituaries, which often can be done online or by contacting the newspaper's obituary department. Typically, you will need to provide the text of the obituary, any desired photographs, and information about service times and locations.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers charge a fee for publishing obituaries, which can vary widely based on factors such as length, whether a photograph is included, and the particular publication's rates.

Can obituaries be published online as well?

Yes, many newspapers offer online publication of obituaries as part of the package when you submit for print publication. Additionally, there are many websites specifically for publishing obituaries and memorial information online.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

It's best to avoid including overly personal or sensitive information that could embarrass the family or deceased, or that could be used for identity theft, such as exact addresses, dates of birth, and mother's maiden name.

Is it acceptable to include a cause of death in an obituary?

Whether to include a cause of death is a personal choice and is acceptable as long as it is done respectfully and with the consent of close family members. Some families prefer to keep this information private, and that choice should also be respected.

How can one personalize an obituary?

An obituary can be personalized through the sharing of anecdotes, personal stories, or unique characteristics of the deceased. Including the individual's hobbies, passions, or favorite quotes can also provide a more personal touch.

Should an obituary include a photo?

Including a photo is optional but can be a nice way to visually remember the deceased. It is generally recommended to choose a recent and representational photo of the individual.

Is it necessary to list all family members in an obituary?

While it's not necessary to list every relative, it is customary to include immediate family members, as well as those who were particularly close to the deceased. This acknowledges their relationship and loss.

Can an obituary mention charitable donations or memorials?

Yes, obituaries often suggest memorial donations to a charity important to the deceased or the family instead of flowers. This information should include the name of the charity and any necessary contact or donation details.

How do cultures differ in their approach to obituaries?

Cultural approaches can vary significantly when it comes to obituaries, with some cultures opting for more detailed life stories and others preferring more reserved notices. It's important to honor the customs and traditions of the deceased and their family.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after publication?

If an error is discovered after publication, most newspapers and online services will allow for corrections to be made, though there may be an additional fee for re-publication in print versions.

What should be done if a family member disagrees with the content of an obituary?

If a family member disagrees with the content, it is best to discuss it openly and arrive at a version that is respectful and acceptable to all involved parties. Consideration and compromise are key in these situations.
