Johnnie gave her life to the Lord at the age of 13, and was baptized at First Baptist Waxahachie on October 31, 1948. She served in various churches throughout her life including Parkview Baptist Church in Arlington, Water Street Baptist Church in Waxahachie, Calvary Baptist Church in Brownsboro, and Dixie Baptist Church in Tyler. Johnnie was a charter member of Heritage Trail Cowboy Church in Ben Wheeler in her later years.
Known as “Mimi” to her family, and most everyone else, Johnnie always had a place in her heart and home for family and friends. She was content loving and supporting others behind the scenes - not one to require the spotlight or recognition. She valued people and preferred to keep things simple and quiet.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lee and Ava Laymance; her husband of 62 years, Joe Featherston; and her brother, Gary Laymance. She is survived by her children Michelle Chambers, and husband Robert, of Chandler; Scott Featherston of Chandler; Chuck Bishop, and wife Susan, of Lindale; her precious friend and caregiver Charlene Duke of Chandler; her grandchildren Stacey Dickson, and husband Brandon, of Chandler; Stephanie Mazingo, and husband Jason, of Kingwood; Ryan Featherston, and wife Kristin, of Brownsboro; Joseph Wade Featherston of Mineola; and Breezy Bishop of Lindale; her great grandchildren Abby and Ben Featherston; Jed, Bella, and Jules Mazingo; and Dax and Carson Dickson; her sister-in-law Marjorie Laymance of Mansfield; and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are grandsons Joseph Wade Featherston, Ryan Featherston, Brandon Dickson, and Jason Mazingo; and great grandsons Ben Featherston, Jed Mazingo, Dax Dickson, and Carson Dickson and honorary grandson Jeremy Mazingo.
The family would like to thank those who encouraged them and supported them in the last months of Mimi’s life. The family is especially grateful for the staff at Bluebonnet Point Wellness Center in Bullard.

Today, in the presence of my Heavenly Father, my Savior, Jesus the Messiah, and the Holy Spirit, I wholeheartedly pledge my life and all that I am, and have, to the will of the Most High God, to serve Him with all my being, heart and soul, until such time as He collects me into His Presence or allows me to rest until His return.
This is a pledge of dedication to His Church and His Kingdom.
Today, I witness, to Heaven and all the Universe, that I belong to God and Him only, now and Forever, throughout all eternity. It is now my desire, to be sealed together, with the Holy Spirit of God, for His Service. (signed) Wanda N. Neufeld
In 2000, Wanda felt God’s calling for her to travel to the Republic of Ghana, Africa, as a volunteer ShareHim evangelist to preach the gospel of her Lord Jesus Christ and was credited with 170 baptisms. She was a witness to a group baptism of 55-60 people. ShareHim was a program where the evangelists used a prepared program, paid their own travel expenses and preached for 21 or 23 days. For Wanda, this was an amazing experience; preaching for her Lord Jesus Christ; winning souls for His kingdom; expensive, but amazing; however, not surprising. Since falling love with God and Jesus at the age of four-years, she has been trying to share Jesus with everyone she could.
Wanda wanted to learn to read. The only book she could find to practice with was the family Bible. The four-year-old, took the Bible up into the tree house, her brother Dwayne had built, and started in the beginning and got as far as Deuteronomy. She begin talking to God (praying) as her friend, then, trying to see His face in the clouds floating in the sky.
Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens, Texas, after the visitation at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, Athens, Texas, on Friday, 8 Mar 2024 (her 83rd birthday).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often printed in newspapers or online platforms. It typically includes a brief summary of the person's life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and details on the surviving family members. Obituaries serve as a way to inform the community and honor the deceased's life.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary is more detailed and personal, often including biographical information, accomplishments, and personal anecdotes. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more formal announcement of a person's death that usually contains only basic details like name, age, the time of passing, and service information.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes newspaper staff. In many cases, funeral homes will offer assistance in writing obituaries as part of their services.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, both in print and online. Additionally, there has been a rise in dedicated online memorial sites where obituaries and tributes can be shared.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, date of birth, date of death, a brief summary of their life story, family details, funeral and memorial service information, and sometimes a photo. It may also mention the cause of death if the family chooses to include it.

Is it necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is not necessary and is at the discretion of the family. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others may share the cause of death to bring awareness to specific health issues or circumstances.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, many individuals choose to write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning. This allows them to highlight the aspects of life they find most meaningful and to alleviate some of the stress on family members during a difficult time.

What is the general length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. It can be a short paragraph or a lengthy piece covering several aspects of the person's life. However, the cost of publication in print media and the desired level of detail can influence its length.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should be published as soon as possible, typically within a few days of the death, to promptly inform the community and announce any service details so that individuals can make arrangements to attend.

How long do newspapers typically keep obituaries archived?

Newspapers may keep obituaries archived for several years or even decades, depending on their archiving policies. Nowadays, online obituaries can remain accessible indefinitely.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

Can I include a poem or quote in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include a favorite poem, quote, or bible verse that was meaningful to the deceased or that reflects on the person's life or the family's feelings.

How can I ensure that the obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

To ensure that the obituary is respectful, focus on the deceased's positive traits, significant life events, and the meaningful impact they had on those around them. It's often helpful to have close friends or family members review it before publication. Always adhere to the wishes of the deceased if they left specific instructions.

What if I don’t want to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

Publishing an obituary is not mandatory. Some families choose to circulate the news among their community and networks without an official publication. Others may opt to publish an obituary online, through social media or dedicated memorial sites.

There are no legal requirements for publishing obituaries. However, ensuring the accuracy of the information and respecting the privacy of surviving family members is crucial.

How should I handle requests for donations in an obituary?

How can I write a compelling obituary?

To write a compelling obituary, focus on what made the deceased unique. Share stories, highlight relationships, and describe personal attributes that will help readers understand the individual's essence and impact on others.

What kind of photo should accompany an obituary?

A recent photograph where the deceased looks like themselves, ideally showing them in a setting or activity that reflects their personality, is an appropriate choice for an obituary.

Are there templates available for writing an obituary?

Yes, there are many templates and resources available online to help guide individuals through the writing process. Funeral homes also often provide templates and can assist in crafting an obituary.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary after it has been published?

How do I choose the right words for an obituary?

When writing an obituary, use clear, respectful, and warm language. Reflect on the person's life and choose words that convey their spirit, character, and the love they shared with others. Avoid overly complex or ornate language that might detract from the genuine sentiment you wish to express.
