Douglas Keith Olson was born December 28, 1952, to Keith and Alice (Sandgren) Olson in Grafton, ND. A lifelong resident of Pembina County, he spent his early years hot-rodding around the streets of his beloved Bathgate, ND, where he lived with his parents and his sister, Linda. He graduated from Neche High School in 1970 and attended the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University.
Doug started farming at an early age with his dad, which blossomed into a decades-long, successful career in agriculture. He was proud of the business that he built. His shop was a frequent gathering point for fellow farmers, looking to celebrate or lament the latest weather event or local happening—perhaps over a Bud Light (or two).
In April 1970, he worked up the guts to ask his high school crush, Mary Beth Anderson, to their senior prom, sparking a lifelong love affair that carried him through to his last breath. The pair were married at Christ Lutheran Church in Neche, ND on June 28, 1974. They settled in Cavalier, ND and raised three children.
Doug’s love and zest for life were as strong as his broad shoulders. He was an avid reader, gardener, fisherman, and pheasant hunter. He adored his summer weekends at Woodland Resort in Devils Lake, ND, surrounded by friends who feel like family. He enthusiastically road-tripped to NASCAR races around the country, basked in the Florida sun, and enjoyed glorious beach sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico with Mary Beth during winters in retirement.
Doug is survived by his wife, Mary Beth; children: Traci (Justin) Elder, Edina, MN; Tricia (Stasha) Ler, Edina, MN; Tyler (Sarah) Olson, Plymouth, MN; grandchildren Samuel and Quinn Elder, Madeline and Nolan Ler, Colin and Benjamin Olson; sister, Linda (Jim) Dupre’, Rapid City, SD; and many loving aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Bert D. Olson - Unknown - January 05, 2021

Departed: 01/05/2021 (Cavalier)
Obituary Preview: Bert D. Olson, age 79 peacefully passed away January 5, 2021 of complications from the Covid virus. He was born March 25, 1941 in Grafton, ND the youngest son of Bert and Madeleine Olson of Glasston, ND.
Bert grew up on the family farm near Glasston, ND. He attended a one room school house a half mile east of the farm through grade 5 before moving on to Glasston public for grades 6 and 7 then   completing his grade school and high school education in Cavalier. He attended Mayville State College earning a degree in business from 1959 to 1963. On June 14, 1963 he married his childhood sweetheart Marlys Dietrich in Cavalier. The same year he attended basic training in the United States Air Force at Chanute Air force base in Amarillo, TX and took further training in Champaign, IL. He then became a member of the Fargo Air Guard. That same year he acquired Olson Motor Company which he successfully ran until 1994 when it was sold to Swanson Motors.
He was very much an entrepreneur! He ran a custom combining operation, Bert Olson Trucking, housing rentals, dealt in real estate, and owned The Red Bridge Inn, a bed and breakfast in Park Rapids, MN. He was involved in many community organizations; The Cavalier Chamber, The Baptist Church, Board of Directors of United Valley Bank, CII Retail Committee, an avid sports announcer at Cavalier high school football games, the host of the Saturday morning “Coaches Corner” on KXPO radio, and who wouldn’t remember his organization of floats in the annual Christmas Parade. He could be seen racing Division Street on his 4 wheeler making sure everything was timely and in order.
There was only ONE like him!! A servant of the Lord, a loving and dedicated husband, and sincerest friend. He was an avid sports fan. The high school quarterback, and 4 year starter on the Mayville State College football team. Never full of himself, and always offering a helpful hand to others to lift them up. If you were ever in need of most anything Bert was always there with never ending support. Mr. Cavalier as he was fondly referred to was his home, his pride, his lasting legacy. The towns people were his dearest friends and family.
Bert was very much an animal lover. Enjoying his evening walks through the paths he had cut through the bush on his 80 acres of land west of Cavalier. Sitting with his adored wife Marlys on their swing watching the deer frolic in the pasture beyond. They were always accompanied by their beloved dog Ginger more person than dog. Friends might stop by for a visit. Always a story to be told. “Did I ever tell you the story of ……” and the yarn would begin likely to be followed by the next. Never a dull moment in Bert’s presence.
There was seldom a time you didn’t hear his quick footsteps of his boots across the showroom floor at Olson Motors that converted to tennis shoes and white socks below his short pants in the summers. A welcome smile to lasting friends as well as strangers who entered in. Often having to wait for his attention as he competed a phone call, yet always worth the extra time it took just to share a moment of his time. He never did take to fancy I phones, but rather his flip phone. Patient to text the complication of digits to type even one letter. His texts likely short, but always heart felt. To write of his faithfulness as a friend, as a husband, as a supporter of Cavalier and his love of God would take pages!! We are all so thankful to call him our friend! Bert is survived by his wife, Marlys, brother Bob, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Darlene and Dale, his nieces and nephews Jacki, Juli, Jay, Rob, Rick and Mike. He was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Madeleine Olson and niece Jana, sister-in-law, Kay,

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of a person, often with a brief account of their life and information about upcoming funeral and memorial arrangements. It is a way to publicly acknowledge the loss, celebrate the deceased's life, and inform the community of the death.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are typically published in newspapers—both in print and online—as well as on dedicated digital memorial platforms, funeral home websites, and social media channels.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person's life and typically includes biographical details, achievements, and information about surviving family members. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more formal announcement of a person's passing, often limited to basic details such as name, date of passing, and funeral service information.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the services. In some cases, individuals pre-write their own obituaries, which are then edited or published by their loved ones after they pass away.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary often includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief overview of their life story, family members, notable accomplishments, affiliations, and details on the funeral or memorial services.

How long after a death is an obituary usually published?

The publication of an obituary typically takes place within a few days after death to allow friends and community members to be aware of the death and make arrangements to attend services or offer condolences.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary when someone dies?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary; it is done at the discretion of the family. However, many find it a helpful way to inform the community and honor the memory of the deceased.

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform, length of the obituary, and the inclusion of photos or additional features. Newspapers often charge by the line or word, whereas online platforms may offer different packages.

What should one do if they can't afford to publish an obituary?

For those who cannot afford the cost of a traditional obituary in a newspaper, there are free or low-cost options available online, or they may use social media to share the information at no cost.

Can an obituary be published in more than one place?

Yes, an obituary can be published in multiple newspapers and online platforms to reach a wider audience. This is often done when the deceased has connections to different regions or communities.

How can one personalize an obituary?

An obituary can be personalized by including anecdotes, personal stories, quotes, or any other unique aspects that capture the essence of the deceased's life and personality.

Are photos commonly included with obituaries?

Yes, it is quite common to include a photo with an obituary. This helps readers to visually connect with the deceased, especially those who may not have seen them in recent years.

What is considered appropriate etiquette when writing an obituary?

Appropriate etiquette for writing an obituary includes being respectful and truthful, focusing on the positive aspects of the person's life, and ensuring that all survivors are correctly named and described. Sensitivity should be a priority, especially when discussing the cause of death.

Should causes of death be included in an obituary?

Whether or not to include the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others may wish to share it, especially if it relates to a public awareness cause or charitable request.

How does one submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the obituary or classified section of the publication for submission guidelines and deadlines. Often, this can be done either online or through direct collaboration with a funeral home.

While obituaries are not legal documents, they can serve to notify distant friends or relatives of the death and can also serve as proof of death when canceling accounts, services, or subscriptions.

Is it necessary to include funeral or memorial service details in an obituary?

Including funeral or memorial service details is not necessary but can be helpful for those wishing to pay their respects. Some families choose only to notify family and close friends privately about the details of services.

How can one ensure the accuracy of the information in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, double-check all facts, dates, names, and spellings with family members, and consider having another person review the obituary before publication.

What if I want to write something more like a life tribute than an obituary?

A life tribute is similar to an obituary but often more personal, detailed, and less formal. If you prefer to write a life tribute, you can certainly do so and focus on stories and memories that best reflect the person's life and impact on others.

How should surviving family members be listed in an obituary?

Surviving family members are usually listed in order of their relationship to the deceased, starting with the closest relatives. Take care to include all those who should be mentioned and clarify relationships as needed to avoid confusion.

What can families do with the online condolences received from an obituary posting?

Families can respond to online condolences to thank individuals for their support, create a keepsake book of the messages for remembrance, or use them as part of a memorial service to share the impact of the deceased’s life.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary. It can be as brief or as detailed as desired. However, costs may influence the length if the obituary is published in a paid space such as a newspaper.

Can an obituary be updated after it has been published?

Once an obituary is published in a newspaper, it typically cannot be updated. However, online obituaries can sometimes be edited or updated after initial publication. It's important to check with the specific platform on their policies regarding updates.
