It usually outlines key life achievements, provides information regarding the funeral or memorial services, and may include a brief summary of the person's life story, family members, and any special messages from relatives.

Does an obituary differ from a death notice?

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members of the deceased, friends, or by staff writers at the publication where the obituary will appear. Sometimes, funeral homes offer obituary writing services as part of their packages.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is customarily published as soon as practical after a person's death, often within a week. This timing helps to inform friends and community members about the death in a timely manner, particularly if funeral services are imminent.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary often includes the full name of the deceased, age, date of birth, date of death, a brief summary of their life, details of the surviving family members, funeral service times and locations, and sometimes a special message or poem. In recent years, some have also included a cause of death.

Can obituaries be published online?

Yes, online obituaries are becoming increasingly common. They are often posted on the websites of funeral homes, on social media platforms, and on dedicated memorial sites.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no set standard for the length of an obituary. It can vary from a simple few lines to a detailed biography that takes up several column inches in a newspaper. The length often depends on the level of detail the family wishes to include and the costs associated with longer publications.

Who can I talk to for help writing an obituary?

You can seek assistance from funeral directors, clergy, friends or family members who have experience with writing, or professional obituary writers. Some people even choose to write their own obituaries in advance.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is optional and is entirely at the discretion of the deceased's family. Some families choose to include it for transparency or to bring awareness to certain illnesses, while others prefer to keep such details private.

What should I consider when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, consider the tone and the amount of personal and private details you want to share. Reflect on the life and values of the deceased, the impact they had on others, and any wishes they may have had for their obituary. Clear, respectful, and concise language is often appreciated.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely, depending on the publication's pricing structure (which is often based on length) and whether it includes photos. Prices can range from free, in some local or online publications, to several hundred dollars in large metropolitan newspapers.

Are there different styles or formats for obituaries?

Yes, obituaries can vary in style and format. Some take a more traditional approach, summarizing the person's life in a straightforward manner, while others might take a more creative or narrative approach. The format can also reflect cultural, religious, or personal preferences.

Can a family opt not to publish an obituary?

A family may choose not to publish an obituary for various reasons, including privacy concerns, cost constraints, or a preference for a more private mourning process. This decision is entirely personal and should be respected by those outside the immediate family.

How do you handle sensitive information in an obituary?

Handling sensitive information in an obituary should be done with care and respect. It's important to consider the deceased's wishes, the feelings of surviving family members, and the overall tone the family wishes to set for their loved one's remembrance.

What cultural considerations should I keep in mind while writing an obituary?

Cultural considerations are significant when writing an obituary. Be mindful of religious customs, honorific titles, specific phrases or verses, and any cultural customs or traditions that should be included or avoided according to the traditions of the deceased's community.

Can friends or community members contribute to an obituary?

Yes, friends and community members can contribute to an obituary by providing anecdotes, photos, or simply helping to fact-check the document. However, the family usually has final say over the content of the obituary.

Are obituaries reviewed before publication?

Before publication, obituaries should be reviewed by family members for accuracy and to ensure they meet the publication's guidelines. Some publications also have editorial staff who review submissions for format, spelling, and grammar.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after publication?

If errors are found after publication, most newspapers and online platforms will allow families to update or correct an obituary. However, this may incur additional costs and might not be possible in printed versions.

What is the purpose of including a photo in an obituary?

Including a photo in an obituary helps readers to visually identify the deceased and adds a personal touch to the announcement. It can be a recent portrait or a picture that captures the essence of the person's life and personality.

Should the family be consulted on what to include in the obituary?

Yes, it's crucial to consult with the family or those closest to the deceased to ensure that the obituary accurately reflects their wishes and the legacy of the loved one. Collaboration can also provide a more comprehensive and meaningful tribute.

How should the final copy of an obituary be preserved?
