Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary purpose of an obituary?

An obituary serves to inform the community of an individual's passing and to celebrate their life by providing a brief biography, notable achievements, and information about the funeral or memorial services. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Who usually writes an obituary?

An obituary is typically written by a close relative, friend, or, in some cases, the funeral home handling the services. It can be a collaborative effort among family members to ensure all important aspects of the person's life are covered.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age, place of birth, date of passing, a brief summary of life, significant accomplishments, information about the surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and possibly a special message or a thank you from the family.

Are obituaries published in newspapers free?

Most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, with the cost varying depending on the length of the text and any additional options such as photos or decorative borders. Some newspapers may offer a shortened version for free with the option to pay for a more detailed listing.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are often published within a few days to a week after the passing of an individual. This timing can depend on the deadlines set by the publication and the speed at which the family or funeral home can gather the necessary information.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are now published online on various platforms, including social media, online newspapers, and dedicated memorial websites. Online obituaries can be a more accessible and longer-lasting tribute to the deceased.

Is it necessary to include a cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is optional and a personal choice. Some families choose to include it for clarity or to bring awareness to particular health issues, while others may prefer to keep such details private.

How can one ensure the accuracy of an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, it's essential to double-check all the facts, dates, and spellings, especially the names of survivors and predeceased family members. Having multiple family members review the obituary before submission can help catch errors.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of a person's life, including biographical information and personal anecdotes. In contrast, a death notice is a brief announcement of the death, typically including basic information such as the name, age, and date of passing, as well as service details.

Should an obituary include a photograph?

Including a photograph is optional but can add a personal touch to an obituary. It helps readers connect with the individual and can be especially meaningful if it captures the essence of their personality or a memorable moment in their life.

Is it appropriate to include a request for donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is not uncommon for obituaries to include a request for donations to a favorite charity of the deceased, in lieu of flowers. This can be a way to honor the deceased's legacy and support causes they cared about.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the life and personality of the deceased. While it should maintain a respectful and professional tone, it can also include lighthearted anecdotes or personal touches that celebrate the person's unique character.

Can an obituary be updated after it is published?

Once an obituary is published in a newspaper, it generally cannot be altered. However, online obituaries can often be updated or edited with additional details or to correct any inaccuracies.

What should one do if an obituary contains errors?

If errors are discovered in an obituary after publication, contact the newspaper or website to inquire about making corrections. For printed obituaries, it may be possible to publish a corrected version in the next issue.

How can I write a meaningful obituary for someone I didn't know well?

If tasked with writing an obituary for someone you did not know well, gather information from those who were close to the individual and conduct some research into their life. Ask about important milestones, personal interests, and memorable stories that can help paint a picture of the person.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary as it depends on the individual's life, accomplishments, and the preferences of the family. Newspaper obituaries may be restricted by space and cost, whereas online obituaries can be more flexible in length.

Are there any cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Cultural and religious traditions may influence the content and tone of an obituary. It's important to be sensitive to such traditions and include any specific information or phrasing that may be customary.

How can an obituary help in the grieving process?

Can a family choose not to publicize an obituary?

Yes, the decision to publish an obituary is completely up to the family. Some may choose to keep the matter private or to communicate the death in a more personal way, such as through direct notification to family and friends.

Is it possible to include personal messages or quotes in an obituary?

Personal messages, quotes, or verses can be included in an obituary to reflect the beliefs, personality, or sentiments of the deceased. This can add depth and individuality to the obituary.
