He was especially proud of his football career as a Pineville Mountain Lion in the 1950s. He was All Conference for three years, honorable mention All State for two years and first team All State in his senior year. As co-captain of the team in his senior year, he played with painful injuries but never missed a game. During his senior season, the Mountain Lions were ranked No. 1 overall in the State rankings. As a testament to Fred’s strength and positive attitude, when the oncologist revealed his diagnosis, he said, “It’s okay. I’ve had a great life and I’ve enjoyed it.” Fred was a kind and caring person. He never met a stranger. The world feels a little dimmer without Fred’s light.

A special thank you to Dr. Martha Combs-Woolum for her many years of care and friendship. The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassion and care extended to Fred by the team at Bluegrass Hospice Care. Thank you to all the friends and neighbors who sent prayers and offers of help.
To all of those who have experienced the hopelessness and grief of a loved one’s cancer death, we want to say that we know your pain.
If family and friends would like to make a donation in Fred’s memory, the family suggests Friends of the Bell County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 2534, Middlesboro, Kentucky 40965, or Bluegrass Hospice Care.
At Fred’s request, cremation was performed at Arnett & Steele Funeral Home and Cremation Center. A family celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Fannie Rae Howard - May 08, 1932 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Pineville)
Obituary Preview: Fannie Rae Jones Howard, 91, of Kettle Island, Kentucky passed into Glory on February 25, 2024, at the Pineville Community Health Center. She was born on May 8, 1932, in Kettle Island, Kentucky to John and Mary Collett Jones who preceded her in death. Fannie was saved at the age of twelve and baptized into the Mill Creek Baptist Church. She served as a deacon’s wife, taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and was church clerk for many years. She loved to knit and crochet and remained active in church ministry by making over a hundred head bands each year for Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Ministry until forced to stop due to failing eyesight at age 85. She also loved to fish. On March 28, 1968, she was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Louie B. Nunn. She retired from the Bell County Board of Education where she worked as a secretary and lunchroom bookkeeper at Right Fork School. She was a devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and servant to many.
In addition to her parents, Fannie was preceded in death by her faithful husband of 61 years, Gabe Howard; her brothers, George C. Jones and Bill Jones, and his wife, Claudette; her sister, Marsetta Jones Crisp; nephews, Tim Jones and Larry Jones; and niece, Debbie Jones.
Fannie is survived by her sons, Dr. Rondald (Sandra) Howard of Kettle Island, Kentucky, Dr. Rodger (Patricia) Howard of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, and Benny (Woodie) Howard of Middlesboro, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Beth Howard of Kettle Island, Kentucky, Andrew (Mayya) Howard of Alexandria, Virginia, Matthew (Marka) Howard of Harrogate, Tennessee, James Howard of Atlanta, Georgia, Lindsey (Vince) Powell of Lexington, Kentucky, Paige (Trey) Harbin of Pineville, Kentucky, Gracen (Joshua) Arnold of Harrogate, Tennessee, and Dana Howard of Middlesboro, Kentucky; four great-grandchildren, Conner Powell, Baylee Harbin, Brennan Harbin, and Titus Arnold; and a host of cousins, nephews, and nieces that she loved greatly.
Fannie also had many friends all of which were precious to her. However, there were some who were incredibly special who ministered to her as she aged. Alan and Linda Johnson, of Indiana who called her every week for many years; Ken and Anna Gambrel who brought her home-cooked meals weekly for many years; Kendra Partin-Lankford who lovingly provided for her care and friendship; Mary Lou Saylor who was a loving and constant watchful eye; Jacob and Kim Yates who went above and beyond in friendship and care; and a very dear friend, Carolyn Helton who loved Fannie from the time Carolyn was a young girl at Right Fork School.
Fannie strived to live as a separated Christian and the impact of her dedication to share God’s Word and love not only to her family but the children she ministered to through her time working in church nursery, VBS, Shoebox Ministry, as well as her love for the children at Right Fork School have led many to consider her like a second mother, or “Dodie” to them. Her devotion to following the Father had an eternal impact on her home, as well. Through the grace of God, all three of Fannie’s sons are in Church ministry in large part because of her faithfully reading God’s Word with them as they sat on her lap when they were young, by her spending all night praying for her sons to be saved, and by her exemplifying the mature, sober minded, chaste and obedient woman of Titus 2:3 – 5.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Mill Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Rondald Howard, Dr. Rodger Howard, Dr. William Boyd Bingham and Reverend Rafe Collett officiating. Lucy Vetrano Smith, Mickey Wilder and Thomasa Risner will provide music. Her interment will follow the service at Green Hills Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Andrew, Matthew and James Howard, Vince and Conner Powell, Trey and Brennan Harbin, and Joshua Arnold. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Nicholas Fugate and Dr. Jerry Woolum.
The family would like to offer a special thank you for the personal and professional care afforded them by the staff of Pineville Community Health Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of an obituary?

An obituary serves as a formal announcement of an individual's passing and provides a summary of their life, including significant accomplishments, family members, and information about funeral or memorial services. It's a way to publicly acknowledge someone's death, celebrate their life, and inform community members about the loss.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, online memorial sites, and social media platforms. They may also appear in national newspapers, especially for individuals with widespread recognition or impact.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, simpler statement that informs of a person’s passing, which may include brief information about funeral arrangements, whereas an obituary is a longer, more detailed account that includes biographical information, accomplishments, and family details.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Family members, friends, or funeral home staff typically write obituaries. In some cases, individuals pre-write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are generally published within a week of the individual's passing, often sooner, to provide timely information about services and to allow friends and extended family to pay their respects.

Is it obligatory to publish an obituary?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary. The decision is a personal one and should be made based on the wishes of the deceased and their family.

Can an obituary be published online only?

Yes, with the increasing use of the Internet for sharing news and information, many obituaries are solely published online on funeral home websites, dedicated memorial sites, or social media.

Are there specific guidelines to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to writing an obituary, commonly included elements are the individual’s full name, age, date, and place of birth, family details, life accomplishments, funeral or memorial service information, and a photograph. The tone should be respectful and honor the person's life and legacy.

What details are typically included in an obituary?

Typical details include the deceased’s full name, age, city of residence, names of surviving family members, significant life events, accomplishments, education, employment history, hobbies, cause of death if desired, and funeral or memorial service details.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no strict rule regarding length, but most obituaries are brief enough to convey key information meaningfully yet concisely, usually between 200 and 450 words. The length may vary based on the individual’s life story, the medium of publication, and cost considerations.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

Begin by gathering factual information about the deceased, such as dates of birth and death, family information, life milestones, and accomplishments. Then choose an opening that reflects the individual, often noting their passing and most significant life aspects.

Should an obituary include a photo?

A photo is not mandatory but often included as it provides a visual reminder of the individual. It should ideally be a recent and clear portrait that reflects how the person is most commonly remembered.

How can an obituary be personalized?

Personalization can come from including anecdotes, personal stories, quotes, or illustrative examples that capture the essence of the deceased. Highlight unique traits, accomplishments, or the individual’s impact on others to create a more vivid, personal remembrance.

What should not be included in an obituary?

It is best to avoid overly personal details that the deceased or family might not wish to disclose publicly, such as exorbitant wealth, family disputes, or anything that could be deemed as sensitive or disrespectful.

Can family members choose not to be mentioned in an obituary?

Yes, family members can request to not be mentioned. The obituary should respect the wishes of both the deceased and living relatives regarding privacy and public recognition.

How is an obituary used to inform about funeral arrangements?

The obituary typically includes the date, time, and location of the funeral, memorial service, or any public visitation schedules to allow friends and acquaintances to attend or send condolences.

What is an appropriate way to express condolences after reading an obituary?

Sending a sympathy card, flowers, making a donation to a charity specified in the obituary, attending the services, or providing a condolence message online or in person are all appropriate ways to express condolences.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

Printed obituaries cannot be corrected, but online obituaries can often be updated or corrected as needed. It's essential to be as accurate as possible before initial publication to avoid such situations.

Do newspapers charge for publishing obituaries?

Many newspapers charge a fee based on the length of the obituary and any additional features such as photographs. Prices can vary widely, so it’s best to inquire with the specific publication for their rates.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice and not a requirement. Some families may choose to disclose it, especially if the deceased was a public figure or the family wishes to bring awareness to a particular health issue or cause.

What happens if an obituary includes incorrect information?

If an obituary published in print contains errors, the best course of action is to contact the publication to issue a correction, which would appear in a subsequent issue. For online obituaries, corrections can usually be made directly and promptly.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that your life story is told in the way you wish and relieves your loved ones of this task during a difficult time.
