Trudy’s mother, Chattie, took care of her sick grandfather, James Lee, until his death, and as a gift was given a train trip back to Pennsylvania to visit relatives. In November of 1937, her father, John, died of pneumonia after coming home from a deer hunting trip in the mountains. Her mother, Chattie, then packed up their possessions and moved Chuck and Trudy back to Danbury, Iowa, where they moved in with their grandparents, Charles and Mary (Hoy) Lee, on the Lee family farm.
Trudy then attended Danbury Public School. When grandparents, Charles and Mary Lee, died, the Lee family farm was sold and Chattie, Chuck, and Trudy moved into the town of Danbury. Arthur Henry Beeck was born on December 11, 1932, in Schleswig, Iowa, to Lillian Hudson. Art’s father Arthur (his namesake) tragically passed away due to a farming accident prior to his birth.
At the age of four years old, Art’s mother Lillian married Mr. Fred Beeck, who welcomed Art as his son through adoption. He received his education in country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Schleswig High School with the class of 1951.
Art met love of his life Lorraine Meseck after she rode her bike to Ricketts and met him at a baseball game. He noticed her and was instantly smitten. He then sent her a Christmas card to ask her out on a date. The couple dated for five years while Art attended college at Elmerst College in Chicago. He wanted to further his music education and relocated to attend Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
On February 5, 1955, Art and Lorraine were united in marriage and later he graduated with his degree in Music Education from Drake University. Art obtained his master’s degree in education from the University of Omaha.

He passed his love of music to all four of his children having the pleasure of teaching all four of them in school and at home. In 2018, Art and Lorraine relocated to and apartment in Mapleton, Iowa.
Art was a devoted and faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Charter Oak, Iowa, where he was baptized and confirmed in his Lutheran faith. He shared his talents and time from the church loft as a resident organist for many years. He also served as congregation president, elder, and taught Bible study.
An avid gardener, Art loved growing vegetables along with some of the best watermelons. He would tend to his garden pulling weeds and canning the fruits of his labor to later share with others. Later in life Art became a craftsman making furniture out of reclaimed barn wood and selling his creations across five different states. He enjoyed fishing for carp and would wake early in the morning to make his own dough ball recipe. When asked why he liked to fish for carp, Art replied, he enjoyed the fight of reeling them into shore.
Art had a great sense of humor and a laugh that could fill a room. His children fondly remember him laughing boisterously at the Saturday morning cartoon’s especially the Roadrunner. Over the years Art played the piano in a traveling band called the We 5 Combo along with playing the tenor saxophone in the Al Hesse Dance Band. Art and Lorraine delighted in dancing across the floor on Saturday nights together. The couple shared 68 years together and treasured their faith, family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person’s death, often published in a newspaper or online platform. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may include a message of remembrance from the family.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

While both announce someone's passing, an obituary goes beyond a death notice by providing more detailed information about the person's life, achievements, and family. A death notice is usually shorter and may only contain basic details such as the name, date of birth and death, and service information.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are usually written by close family members or friends, sometimes with the assistance of the funeral home. Occasionally, the person who has passed away may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary commonly includes the full name of the deceased, their dates of birth and death, notable life events, career achievements, educational milestones, family members, details about the service, and any preferred charities for memorial contributions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary but typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs, depending on the life events and accomplishments of the deceased, as well as the preferences of the family or the space limitations of the publication.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there is no strict format, most obituaries follow a general template: starting with an announcement of death, followed by a life summary, list of surviving relatives, details about the funeral services, and ending with memorial donation information if applicable.

Should the cause of death be included in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is optional and entirely up to the discretion of the family. Some people choose to include it for closure or to raise awareness for certain causes, while others prefer to keep it private.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary, contact the publication or website for their specific guidelines, which typically include word count limits and costs. Some may offer a template or form to fill out, while others may require you to send the completed text.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are usually published within a few days of a person's death to inform the community and announce service details promptly. The exact timeline can vary depending on the publication schedule and the family’s readiness.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Most publications allow photographs to be included with obituaries, but they may have specific requirements regarding size and quality. Digital photos are typically preferred for online obituaries.

Are there any alternatives to traditional obituaries?

Yes, some alternatives include online memorials, social media posts, and community newsletters. These platforms often provide more space for personal stories and can be shared widely with no or lower costs.

Is it possible to write a living obituary or self-written obituary?

Yes, living or self-written obituaries are becoming more popular. Individuals write them to reflect on their life in their own words and can be a meaningful part of end-of-life planning.

What should I do if I find a mistake in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an obituary, contact the publication as soon as possible to correct the information. They typically have processes in place for making amendments.

Can obituaries be updated after they are published?

It depends on the publication policy. Newspapers may have a limited time frame to make corrections, while online obituaries can often be updated more easily.

How do I handle an overwhelming response to an obituary?

In the case of an overwhelming response, designate a family member or close friend to help manage communications and thank-you notes. It’s also acceptable to post a general thank-you message in the same publication or platform where the obituary appeared.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, inclusion of photos, and regional market prices. Online obituaries may be more affordable or even free.

How can I ensure the obituary is respectful and honors my loved one?

Focus on the positive aspects of their life, poignant memories, and meaningful achievements. Keep the tone warm and reflective, and involve family members in the writing process to ensure it accurately reflects the loved one’s life and legacy.

What if I am not comfortable writing an obituary?

If you are uncomfortable writing an obituary, consider asking other family members, friends, or a professional writer for help. Funeral homes often provide obituary writing services or guidance as well.

Are there cultural or religious considerations I should be aware of when writing an obituary?

Yes, some cultures and religions have specific traditions or expectations regarding death announcements and remembrance. It is important to be sensitive to these practices and, if possible, consult with community leaders or religious figures.

How can family and friends contribute to the obituary?

Encourage family and friends to share their memories, stories, and details about the deceased. This collaborative approach ensures a well-rounded and personal obituary that honors the person's life from multiple perspectives.

What if my loved one did not want an obituary?

Respect the wishes of someone who preferred not to have an obituary published. Instead, consider other ways to honor them, such as a private memorial service, a family gathering, or a personal tribute shared among close friends and family.
