Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about their family, details of the funeral or memorial services, and can include a picture. Obituaries serve to inform the community of a person's passing and to honor their life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed tribute that often includes biographical details and information about the person's life, family, and achievements, whereas a death notice is a simple announcement of the death, often providing just the name, dates of birth and death, and details of the funeral service.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes by staff at the newspaper or funeral home. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries, which are then published upon their passing.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should typically include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life, achievements, and career, information about immediate family, funeral or memorial service details, and possibly a photograph.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

Obituaries are generally published as soon as possible after death, often within a few days. This timing allows friends and community members to be aware of the passing and to make arrangements to attend services.

How do you start an obituary?

An obituary usually starts with the full name of the deceased, age at death, and the place of residence followed by the date of passing. It can begin with a simple sentence such as, "John Doe, 82, of Springfield, passed away on March 15, 2023."

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this, but typically, an obituary is a few paragraphs long. It should be long enough to include all relevant information but concise enough to keep the reader's interest.

Is there a template to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no strict template, most obituaries follow a similar structure: announcement of death, biographical sketch, family information, service details, special messages or thanks, and sometimes memorial contributions.

Can I include a poem or quote in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include a meaningful poem, religious text, or quote that reflects the spirit or beliefs of the deceased, or that offers comfort.

Should obituaries mention the cause of death?

It is completely up to the family's preference whether to include the cause of death. Some choose to do so for clarity or to raise awareness about an illness, while others may prefer to keep it private.

What if I don’t have all the information for the obituary?

Include as much information as you have and feel comfortable sharing. It's perfectly acceptable to state that the person "passed away peacefully" or "surrounded by family" without providing full biographical details.

How do we announce a funeral or memorial service in an obituary?

Provide the time, date, and location of the funeral or memorial service, along with any specific instructions for attendees, such as dress code or whether the service is public or private.

What do I do if I make a mistake in an obituary?

Contact the newspaper or website where the obituary was published as soon as possible to correct any errors. They are typically understanding about these sensitive matters and will work with you to make the necessary changes.

How can I ensure the obituary honors the person’s memory in a meaningful way?

Include personal anecdotes, accomplishments, interests, and anything that captures the essence of the person's life and character. Highlight what made them unique and loved by those who knew them.

Is it acceptable to add humor to an obituary?

If it aligns with the personality of the deceased and their family's wishes, a touch of humor can be appropriate and appreciated. However, it's important to be sensitive and respect the somber tone that many associate with obituaries.

Are obituaries reviewed by the family before publication?

Yes, it is standard practice for the family to review and approve an obituary before it is published to ensure accuracy and that it reflects their loved one appropriately.

Who pays for the publication of an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or the estate pays for the publication of an obituary. Costs can vary widely based on the length of the obituary and the publication's pricing.

Can I publish an obituary for someone who passed away a long time ago?

Yes, it is possible to publish an obituary for someone who passed away some time ago, especially if it may not have been done at the time of death. This can be a way to memorialize the individual and inform distant friends or relatives.

How can I personalize an obituary for someone with a public or high-profile life?

Focus on personal attributes and humanizing details that paint a picture beyond their public persona, and consider including quotes from close friends or family that reflect their character and personal relationships.

What information can I omit from an obituary if I’m concerned about privacy?

You can omit specific dates, locations, or any biographical details that you do not wish to disclose publicly. Details such as exact birth date, address, or surviving family members' names can be left out to preserve privacy if desired.

While there are no strict legal requirements for obituaries, it’s important to avoid including any potentially defamatory or private information about the deceased or others without permission. Make sure that all included information can be shared publicly.
