Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in newspapers and online platforms. It typically includes a brief account of the deceased individual’s life, significant achievements, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may include a message of remembrance or a recapitulation of family relationships.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is more detailed and personal compared to a death notice. A death notice is a brief announcement of death that is usually paid for by the family and focuses on the bare facts such as the name, age, and information about the funeral service. An obituary, meanwhile, tends to include more biographical information and personal details.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary is often written by a family member, close friend, or sometimes by a funeral director or professional writer engaged by the deceased's family. In the case of notable public figures, an obituary may have already been written in advance by journalists or specialized writers known as obituarists.

What are the key elements that should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a summary of their life story, accomplishments, information about their family, funeral or memorial service details, and special messages from loved ones or details on where to send condolences or donations.

How do I begin writing an obituary?

To begin writing an obituary, start by gathering the relevant facts about the deceased’s life such as birthdate, education, career, and family details. Then, write a draft that highlights their life’s significant events, relationships, and personality traits. Finally, be sure to include logistical details such as the time and place of the service or where to send flowers and donations.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary widely but is generally around 200 to 500 words. In some cases, particularly for prominent individuals or if the family wishes to include more memories and acknowledgments, it can be longer.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local and national newspapers, but they are also increasingly appearing on online memorials, social media platforms, and the websites of funeral homes.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days after death. This prompt publication allows enough time to inform friends and acquaintances about the death and any upcoming funeral services or memorials.

Can an obituary be published before the funeral?

Yes, obituaries are commonly published before the funeral to inform people of the service details. This also provides an opportunity for friends and extended family to pay their respects or express their condolences.

Are obituaries required by law?

Obituaries are not required by law. They are a matter of personal choice and serve as a way to publicly acknowledge a person's death and celebrate their life.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is optional and ultimately up to the family’s discretion. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others may share it, especially if doing so could raise awareness for a certain disease or condition.

How can friends and acquaintances be notified of a death without an obituary?

If an obituary is not published, friends and acquaintances can be notified via personal communication through phone calls, emails, text messages or through social media. Memorial services or celebrations of life can also be announced through community bulletins or church announcements.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, writing your own obituary is an option and can be seen as a meaningful way to leave a personal legacy. It allows you to highlight what you feel are the most important aspects of your life and to convey any final messages you may wish to share.

Are there templates available for writing an obituary?

Yes, there are many templates available online that can help guide the structure of an obituary. These can serve as a starting point for drafting the text, ensuring that all essential information is included while allowing room for personalized content.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the life and personality of the deceased. It can range from formal and respectful to warm and conversational. Many families opt for a tone that is both reverent and celebratory, acknowledging grief while also expressing the joy that the individual brought into the lives of others.

Is it appropriate to include humor in an obituary?

Yes, if it aligns with the personality of the deceased and the family is comfortable with it, humor can be an appropriate and heartwarming addition to an obituary. It's important to remain respectful and considerate of all readers when including humor.

What should not be included in an obituary?

It's usually best to avoid overly sensitive personal information, potentially divisive or controversial details, and anything that might be considered in poor taste or disrespectful to the deceased or their loved ones.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost to publish an obituary in a newspaper can vary significantly depending on the publication's location, the length of the obituary, and other factors such as inclusion of a photograph. Prices can range from a modest fee to several hundred dollars. It's best to check with individual newspapers for their rates.

Can an obituary be edited or updated after it’s published?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be edited or updated. However, online obituaries often offer the flexibility to update or edit the information if necessary. It's advised to double-check all details for accuracy before submitting for publication.

What rights does the family have over the published obituary?

The family has the right to create and decide the content of the obituary before publication. However, once published, the content typically becomes part of the public domain, especially in the case of printed media. Online, families may have more control over the content as it might be hosted on personal or funeral home websites.

How can we make an obituary accessible to everyone?

To make an obituary accessible to a wider audience, consider publishing it in multiple formats, such as in print, online, and through social media. Additionally, providing a digital copy through email or family websites can help reach those who may not have access to or prefer not to use traditional media.
