Ronald Lee Servoss - August 30, 1940 - October 11, 2021

Departed: 10/11/2021 (Sylva)
Obituary Preview: On October 11, 2021, Dr. Ronald L. Servoss, husband of Linda (Jiles) Servoss, passed away after a lengthy illness. Dr. Servoss was born in Flint, Michigan and raised in Florida. He was the first in his family to pursue higher education. However, Dr. Servoss’s path to Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California was not direct. There were journeys abroad, working on rockets while at Martin Marietta and earning a bachelor’s degree with a physics major in Tennessee.
After completing his residency in anesthesiology, Dr. Servoss served his country as an officer in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, the only one of the nation’s uniformed services dedicated solely to protecting America’s public health. Medicine was not just a profession, but is what defined him. As an anesthesiologist, he devoted himself to caring for patients, including many years practicing at C.J. Harris Regional Hospital, a Duke LifePoint Partner, in Sylva, North Carolina.
Dr. Servoss was always exploring new places and pursuing exciting adventures including sailing excursions, navigating the full length of the Tennessee River, and finding the most obscure scenic campsites all over North America. Dr. Servoss was also a technophile and lifelong learner - always excited to delve into mastering a new challenge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children (Amanda Smith, Shawn Servoss and Stephanie Servoss), one grandchild (Erin Candler), two brothers (Gene Servoss and Larry Servoss), and cousins, nieces and nephews. We are sure that if there are new roads to explore, he is putting the “pedal to the metal” and charging off with Odie (former pet Yorkie) as his sidekick.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically including a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial services, and sometimes a message of remembrance or tribute. It's a way to publicly acknowledge someone's passing and to inform the community of their life and legacy.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

While both serve to announce someone’s death, an obituary often provides more detail, such as a life story, family details, and achievements. A death notice, by contrast, is usually a shorter, factual announcement often placed in newspapers by the family or funeral home including the bare essential details such as the name, age, residence, and information about the funeral service.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends but can also be composed by funeral home staff or professional writers at the request of the family. Some individuals may write their own obituaries before their passing.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries can be published in various locales, including print newspapers, online news websites, social media, community bulletins, and dedicated obituary websites. Some families also choose to distribute obituaries through email newsletters or family blogs.

What details are typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, date of passing, birthplace, age, a summary of their personal life and career, family members, details about the funeral or memorial service, and often a photo. Some may also contain anecdotes, achievements, a thank you section, or special messages from the family.

Is it obligatory to publish an obituary?

No, there is no legal obligation to publish an obituary. It is a personal choice for the family based on various factors, including culture, tradition, and the wishes of the deceased and their relatives.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is commonly published within a few days to a week after death, ideally before the funeral or memorial service to allow acquaintances to make arrangements to attend. Timing can vary depending on cultural practices and family preferences.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Publishing obituaries can incur costs, especially in traditional newspapers where fees are charged based on length and whether a photograph is included. Some online platforms or community bulletins might offer free or lower-cost options.

Can an obituary be personally written for a loved one, or does it have to be professionally written?

Obituaries can certainly be personally written by loved ones. This often adds a personal touch that more accurately reflects the life and personality of the deceased. Professional writing services are available if preferred, but not necessary.

What should be considered when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, consider the tone, relevant life events, the deceased's achievements, family members to be included, any charitable contributions in lieu of flowers, and service details. Aim to honor the person's life with dignity and respect. Always remember to be truthful and consider the privacy of those mentioned.

Do obituaries have to include a cause of death?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is optional. Families may choose to share this information for transparency or to raise awareness for a specific health condition, but many decide to keep this private.

How do you handle surviving family members in an obituary?

In an obituary, surviving family members are usually listed in order of their relationship to the deceased, starting with the closest kin (spouse, children, siblings, etc.). It is customary to include the names of close family members while respecting their privacy and wishes.

What if some family members are estranged or absent?

The inclusion of estranged or absent family members in an obituary is at the discretion of those preparing the announcement. It’s important to be sensitive to family dynamics, and in some cases, an estranged relationship may be acknowledged discreetly or omitted altogether for the sake of family privacy.

How can one express condolences when reading an obituary?

Condolences can be expressed through signing online guestbooks attached to the obituary, sending sympathy cards or messages to the family, making charitable donations in the deceased’s memory, or attending the funeral or memorial service if appropriate.

What should be avoided when writing an obituary?

Avoid divulging overly personal information that the deceased or family members would not want to be public. This includes sensitive topics like financial issues, family disputes, or anything else that may not reflect well on the deceased or cause discomfort to the family.

Can an obituary be updated after being published?

Once an obituary is published, particularly in print, it usually cannot be altered. However, online obituaries may sometimes be updated or corrected if needed. Always proofread carefully before submission to avoid errors.

Is a photograph necessary for an obituary?

A photograph is not necessary, but it is a common feature that adds a personal touch and helps readers connect with the obituary. If a photo is used, choose one that is recent and presents the deceased in a respectful light.

How long do newspapers keep obituaries archived?

Newspapers may keep obituaries in their archives for varying lengths of time, often permanently. Many newspapers also make archives available online, which can effectively immortalize an obituary.

How are obituaries sent to newspapers or online platforms?

Obituaries are often submitted to newspapers or online platforms through forms provided by the publication or website. They typically require a submission fee and adherence to word count limitations and may involve working with the publication's staff to finalize the obituary.

What are the most important things to keep in mind while publishing an obituary?

It's crucial to portray the deceased respectfully, include accurate service details, respect the privacy of family members and others, and consider the cultural and religious beliefs of all involved when composing and publishing an obituary.

Can friends write an obituary, or is it strictly for family members?

Friends can write an obituary if they are close to the deceased and have the family’s consent. Often, friends may provide a unique perspective on the individual's life and influence in the community.
