What is the purpose of an obituary?

The purpose of an obituary is to acknowledge the death of an individual, celebrate their life, inform the public of the death, and provide details of the funeral or memorial service arrangements. It also serves as a historical record.

Who usually writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the arrangements. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance to ensure that their life is portrayed as they wish.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. It typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs, depending on the complexity of the deceased's life and the space available in the publication. Online obituaries may allow for more length and detail.
