Gibbs Benton - December 26, 2008 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: We brought our sweet Gibbs into our homes the winter of 2010, and 24 year old me could have never fathomed the love we would share for the next 14 years. It was love at first sight for his grandparents, Bobby and Gloria, who spoiled Gibbs beyond my wildest dreams.
Gibbs' cuddling skills were unmatched, and he welcomed his family as well as many a foster pup to scooch up with him for a nap.
He was a bottomless pit who never turned down a snack, and with his precious face, he was never turned down for one.
Gibbs left us unexpectedly, but was gracious enough to leave on his own terms in his own bed, and for that we are forever grateful. He displayed unconditional love until his last breath, and he's left us all with permanent holes in our hearts.
Until we meet again, I love you my sweet boy.

Ruger Whaley - Unknown - December 29, 2023

Departed: 12/29/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: January 29, 2011 to December 29, 2023
The best, most loyal, lovable Yellow Labrador Retriever.
Ruger was born into our lives by Cabela and Winchester.   Hunter and Ruger chose each other and we had no chance of ever separating the two of them.  When he was little we almost lost him to coccidiosis, then he was bit and shaken by a hunting dog who was protecting her pups, and he had to have his upper palate of his mouth reattached and never got all his adult teeth in.
Ruger loved Hunter more than anything, but also loved to swim, play ball, and cuddle with anyone that would hold him.   He loved to go for car rides, and was a busy body, he was either wide open or sleeping.  He hated to have his picture taken and as soon as he knew what you were up to would run to his kennel and hide.  He loved his kennel, it was his safe place, we never locked him up, but that's where he would hang out a lot.
Ruger has had rough times since he was diagnosed in March with Laryngeal Paralysis.
Ruger will be joining his parents Cabela and Winchester and some other siblings.
He is leaving behind his family Hunter, Melanie, Jonathan, and adopted siblings Copper and Rufas, along with his farm family and other friends.
We are sure Ruger is happy to be with Winchester and Cabela again.  He is no longer struggling to breathe.   He took his last breath in the comfort of his home in the arms of loved ones.   He will always be in our hearts and missed very much.    We miss them all everyday.
We love you Rugie Rue, give your mom and dad hugs from us.  We will all be together again one day. Hunter, Mel, and Jon

Wish DuFresne - Unknown - October 24, 2023

Departed: 10/24/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: "Wish DuFresne, September 2011(est.) to October 24, 2023.  Wish was adopted from Wayne County Animal Shelter in September 2012 when she was about a year old.  She was picked up as a stray and was very skittish when I first brought her home.  But with a lot of love and a little training, she became the sweetest, happy, and loving dog I've ever known.
She was named Wish because the white from her nose stretched up between her eyes and ended in a wishbone between her ears.  Wish loved and was loved by everyone she met.  She always had a smile on her face and would prance when she walked.  She loved running along the back fence and barking at the tractors in the field behind our house. She also really loved chasing tennis balls but instead of bringing them back, she would lay down and chew on them 🙂  Wish got to see a lot of cool things as she always rode in the truck with me to visit family. In our 11 years together, she saw the beauty of northern New England, the lighthouses and beaches of the NC Outer Banks, the Blue Ridge and Great Smokey Mountains, Nashville, TN and even a trip to Indianapolis.  Wish, I love you so much and will miss you dearly.  Rest in peace, my sweet girl."

Snowball Cook - November 11, 2004 - September 21, 2023

Departed: 09/21/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Snowball better known as Stinkyball because he was one rotten baby. Born November 11, 2004 and passed on September 21, 2023.
Our sweet boy came to us through his mother who was a pregnant stray we took in.  Oh, the joy he brought us through the years.  He traveled with us over seas and back. He witnessed a major typhoon and earthquake in Japan. Through it all he was a sassy cat who knew what he wanted when he wanted and he never stopped talking till he got it.  He always had to have the last word too.
I've never argued with a cat till he came along. Even with all the cat-itude, he was the most loving baby. There was not many people he would not expect attention from. He was a devoted lap cat and expected mama's lap to sit in often, with lots of petting involved. Our hearts are broken that you left us. Until we see you again sweet boy..mama loves you so much!
Overseas but not far from me, An end, truely, I failed to see, Warmth in my heart, but tears awry, A watery basin that won’t run dry, In my memory, the times of past, A sweetness life would not let last, So when I look out upon the snow, I will remember, because I have known, A love felt to the core, so pure, To last years, for that I am sure. Rest in peace snowball.

Cabela Whaley - Unknown - August 15, 2023

Departed: 08/15/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Cabela Whaley
January 7, 2010 to August 14, 2023.
The most laid back English Chocolate Labrador Retriever anyone could meet.
Our lives changed February 23, 2010 when Cabela became part of our family.   While in Ohio we went to meet her. She was the last one of the litter left and we remember she had a chunk missing our of her ear from another puppy biting her, but that wasn't gonna make any difference to us.  We just wanted to share our love with her.
She was the perfect companion for Winchester, who became her soul mate and the 2 of them had 3 adorable litters.
In Cabela's younger years she loved to swim, play fetch, and try to pop balloons.  The balloons always entertain a crowd and she made everyone laugh.
Cabela has had ups and downs for the last 2 years with her joints and growths.  Just recently cancer came and spread very fast.  We could not bare the thought of her suffering and had to make the dreadful decision to let her go be with God.
Cabela will be joining her husband Winchester and her parents Bud and Princess, other siblings, and some of her own that she birthed.
She is leaving behind her son Ruger, adopted family Melanie, Jonathan, and Hunter, adopted siblings Copper and Rufas, her farm family and other family and friends.
We are sure Cabela and Winchester are together again and that she is no longer suffering.   They will always be in our hearts and missed very much.
We love you Sweet girl, Cabela. Give Winchester hugs from us.  We will be together again one day. Mel, Jon, & Hunter

Gizmo Hankins - Unknown - July 17, 2023

Departed: 07/17/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Gizmo was truly a best friend to everyone. Highly motivated by treats and table scraps, Gizmo stood guard under the table every evening, hoping the children would drop something good for him. No one loved going for a walk as much as he did, and he would jump so high when he saw his leash come out. Every night at bedtime, he won the battle for pillows, forcing either his mommy or daddy to make room so he could sleep right beside our heads.
Gizmo will be missed so much. He has left a dog shaped hole in our hearts. He was greatly loved by his mommy Kelly Hankins, his daddy, Andrew Hankins, and his two boys, Heath and Asher, who grew up right beside him.
Have fun across the rainbow bridge, our sweet baby.

Maggie Mae Rogers - November 24, 2009 - May 30, 2023

Departed: 05/30/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Maggie was a once in a lifetime type of gal!  Coming from a liter of 13 pups, you never forget the pup that steals your heart from the time you first meet- Maggie was that little lady.  She never met a stranger she didn’t love and had a special attraction for children who she loved to meet.  Maggie adored her cousin Bowzer, together they loved and looked out for each other. Maggie could run like the wind! When she got older and needed wheels for her back legs, she didn’t let that slow her down or her love for catching frisbee’s and tennis balls.  If you were exhausted after a long day or just needing a moment alone, whenever you saw Maggie with her head perked up with one ear standing straight up, she instantly took your worries away and put you in a good mood. Yoda Goyen - May 24, 2023 - May 24, 2023

Departed: 05/24/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Yoda Goyen, also known as Yodabear, Yodi or Pooterbutt, was taken from us way to soon. Yoda was just 8 weeks old when we brought him home at the beginning of 2020. He instantly grabbed our hearts and love. He was so much more than just a dog... He was our furrbaby and our best friend. He was a support dog and didn't even know it. He was a confidant, a protector and a comedian all in one. He helped both Thomas and I get through some hard times and was always present for the good ones. He helped Thomas through some of his toughest days and is responsible for the strength he has today. I could be having the worst day and Yoda would always snuggle with me and let me know everything was going to be ok. He was not just "any ole dog," he had an eccentric personality that everyone fell in love with. From the day we got him, he loved to ride in the car and would lay behind our neck... so it was only fitting that his last ride was the same.
They always say pets cross over the rainbow bridge, but I like to think Yoda is still here with us.
RIP baby boy 2019-2023.

Biscuit Doyle - Unknown - March 03, 2023

Departed: 03/03/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved Biscuit crossed over the rainbow bridge on March 3, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. We adopted Biscuit when he was two-years-old from Peanuts' Place Rescue in Matthews, NC as a birthday present for our dear Katie. We immediately fell in love with his funny personality and our lives were changed forever. He was such a wonderful companion and protector. Biscuit loved to protect his house from evil people like Amazon, FedEx, or UPS delivery drivers. Once we adopted Abby in 2014, she and Biscuit became best friends and have been inseparable ever since. Biscuit was always the leader, so Abby was happy to follow along. Biscuit loved his toys, although they didn't stand much of a chance once he went for the squeaker. Biscuit's favorite activity was going for long walks on the beach where he would hunt for crabs and sometimes even manage to capture one.
We always loved the way Biscuit would communicate to us when he was hungry or wanted a treat, by a forceful nose bump and that serious stare. If we weren't fast enough, that nose bump and stare would sometimes be followed by a bark.
Biscuit, your 13 years on this earth were not long enough. We will miss you so much and never forget what a wonderful part of our family you have been. Our hearts are broken, but we are so grateful for the time we had with you. Brian, Ross, Katie, Abby, and I know you are happily running and playing, chasing squirrels, and sprawling out in the warm sunshine. Rest in peace little buddy. We love you and can't wait to see you again. Love, Susan, Brian, Ross, Katie, and Abby

Charming Bailey - Unknown - January 29, 2023

Departed: 01/29/2023 (Goldsboro)
Obituary Preview: Charming Bailey was born on February 24, 2014 in Kinston, NC and passed away at home in Goldsboro, NC on January 29th, 2023.
Bailey was such a huge part of our lives. He was a gift to myself as I was returning home from my last Active Duty deployment in 2014. He blew us away with his brilliance and beauty. He knew every trick in the book just after two weeks of training. He would even ring a little bell to let us know he had to go outside.
He never met a stranger and everyone who came into his life loved him and made others want to get a Cavie too. He was that charming. He lived up to his name and left an impression on us that will never leave. Bailey was a traveler as well. He has been to more states than most people. He loved just being with you and it didn't matter where.
He was taken too soon, and the hole will be forever there in our hearts as we say goodbye to our sweet King  Charles. Certainly, a loss too great for works.
Thank you, Bailey for always loving us and cheering up every bad day and helping bring so much love into our lives. We love you forever and always. You are beautiful, kind, smart, and so very loved. Rest in Heaven our Angel. We will see you on the other side of the rainbow bridge one day. Until then stay warm in our hearts. Love Always and Forever,
Mommy & Daddy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, typically published in a newspaper or online, that reports the death of a person and provides a brief account of their life, family, and funeral arrangements. It is a means to publicly acknowledge the passing of an individual and to inform the community of their departure.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is generally a shorter statement announcing someone’s passing with minimal detail, often including just the name, date of death, and information on the funeral or memorial service. An obituary, on the other hand, is more detailed and includes a biographical overview of the deceased’s life, achievements, and information on surviving family members.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, journalists or professional writers draft obituaries, especially for notable figures, following a standard format but adding a personalized touch based on information provided by the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased’s full name, age, date of death, a brief account of their personal life, career, passions, and achievements. It also includes surviving family members’ names, details of the funeral or memorial services, and often an invitation to make donations to a charity in lieu of flowers.

How can I submit an obituary to a local newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a local newspaper, contact the publication directly to inquire about their submission process, guidelines, and fees. Most newspapers require obituaries to be submitted by a funeral home or through their specific online portal or email address.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no strict standard length for an obituary; it can vary widely from a brief notice to a lengthy tribute. However, keep in mind that most newspapers charge by the word or line, so the length may also be influenced by the budget for the obituary placement.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary to reflect on their life and to ensure that the information shared is accurate and in line with their wishes. This can also relieve some of the burden on surviving family members during a difficult time.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary greatly depending on the newspaper or online service, the length of the obituary, and the geographic area. Costs can range from a nominal fee to several hundred dollars. It's best to inquire directly with the publication for their current rates.

What should I do if I spot an error in an obituary?

If an error is found in an obituary, contact the newspaper or website where it was published as soon as possible to correct the information. Most publications have a process for making revisions, although there may be a deadline for changes, especially for print versions.

Are photos included in obituaries?

Photos can be included in obituaries, and many publications offer the option to include a photograph alongside the text. There may be an additional fee for this service, and specific photo quality and size guidelines will usually apply.

Is it necessary to have an obituary?

While not legally necessary, an obituary serves as an important social function by formally announcing the passing of an individual and providing an opportunity for the community to come together in mourning and support of the family.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published soon after death, often within a few days. Timing can be important for notifying extended family, friends, and the community of funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them time to attend.

Can I include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes, personal anecdotes that reflect the personality and life of the deceased can be a beautiful addition to an obituary, making it more heartfelt and individualized. When selecting anecdotes, consider their appropriateness for a public audience.

How do online obituaries differ from print obituaries?

Online obituaries may offer more flexibility in length and content, often at a lower cost than print. They can include additional multimedia elements like photo galleries or videos and are easily shared via social media. Online obituaries also have the advantage of being accessible to a wider audience indefinitely.

Can obituaries be updated or edited after publication?
