Kevin Doody - May 02, 1953 - January 25, 2022

Departed: 01/25/2022 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Kevin Doody, age 68, passed away January 25, 2022.  Devoted son of the late Francis X. and Evelyn J., nee Port; loving brother of Hannah Johnson of McHenry, IL, Maureen (John) Chowning of Palo Alto, CA and Brian.
Kevin showed several talents very early. Like his parents, he was good at comedy skits and imitations with uncommon ability. Kevin was a deep admirer with a keen ear for classical music and admirably gained self-taught skills in playing piano and brass instruments. Like his father, he possessed a great speaking and singing voice. His warm bass-baritone voice was the first impression people gained. His voice sounded so professional that he could have easily maintained a radio career or done voice narratives for nature programs.  Kevin also possessed an intuitive ability to analyze and reconstruct many types of machinery. With this skill, he actually invented a clever system to transform bowling machine systems from analog to digital, thus saving a lot of time, materials, and expenses.  His family, along with his friends, will remember his empathic nature and generosity.

Obituary Preview: Daniel Cruz Chirinos, 79, longtime resident of Chicago, passed away November 19, 2021.  Beloved husband of Leonor Carlotina (Reyes) Chirinos; loving father of Sonia (Lincoyan Cea), Mario H. (Ana), Ivan N. (Myra), David A. (Rosie C. and the late Diana), Sara L., Moises D. and Paulina E. Daniel came to America over 50 years ago from Honduras in search of a better life for his family. Who would’ve thought that his first job as a dishwasher earning $34 a week would eventually lead him to bigger and better things? With his wife always beside him, they both worked hard and eventually became owners of many multi-unit buildings (five to be exact) in which all of the family have lived in at some point or another as they all immigrated to the United States, and some actually still remain living in those buildings!  His true accolades, however, consisted of being first elder of the Iglesia Adventista del séptimo Día del Norte. He worked hard for the church as it gave him much gratitude in helping others and in building that personal relationship with God. In true Christlike manner, he would go out to help feed the homeless and provide warm blankets, food and a kind word in hopes of preserving their dignity.   Daniel was an adventurer with a ripple effect that reached many generations. His constant curiosity led him to continually grow and develop many hobbies and talents involving drawing, playing the accordion, singing and storytelling (those where the best); but what is cherished the most was his divine gift of seeing the inner goodness and light in others and managing to pull forth their inner valiant spirit and strength with his words of wisdom and his strong Christian faith.

Victor Giustino - May 10, 1937 - September 25, 2021

Departed: 09/25/2021 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Victor Giustino was born in Chicago on May 10, 1937, to Joseph (Giuseppe) Giustino of Mola di Bari, Italy and Rose Giustino, nee Rezcek.  Joseph and Rose owned the Oslo Café and later the Napoli Pizzeria (both on Milwaukee Avenue) where Victor helped out after school and a time or two, used to ‘shine shoes’ for a nickel.  Victor is survived by his sister Antoinette (Fred) Stanley (Apple Valley, CA); he joins his father, mother, his sister Evelyn (the late Bill) Kreutzer, and brothers Michael "Mickey" (the late Grace), Joseph (the late Cathleen) and John (the late Dorothy) in Heaven.  He was generous, involved and an engaged son, brother, uncle, grand-uncle, friend and neighbor.
Victor attended Tuley High School and Roosevelt University where he studied Business Administration (1962), and earned his Master’s degree in Urban Studies from Governor State.  Victor worked at Allstate Insurance for almost 30 years, was a member of the JCCIA and was part of the 32nd Ward and Democratic Party over 50 years. Although well-traveled in the United States, Mexico, and Europe, Victor lived his whole life in Chicago. Chicago and Chicago History were his true loves.  Victor helped establish the Italian Veterans in Melrose Park; gave lectures and taught Chicago History at many city colleges and led tours throughout Chicago and the neighborhoods for many years sharing his city with others.  He was on the radio (WJJG) called Cop Talk where he shared many Chicago stories of the past and participated in lively conversations with some our Men in Blue.  Victor was a member of the WGN Radio Program with Eddie Schwartz in the 1980’s talking about Chicago.  He was a member of various neighborhood groups (Lakeview and Lincoln Park), fighting against neighborhood crime and urban decay and was the winner of one of Crain’s Chicago trivia contests in the 1980’s winning a dinner, which he thought was “cool.”
He was a real Chicagoan who loved his city and the people.  He found great enjoyment in attending the many Chicago cultural events every summer.  One could find Victor walking the streets of Chicago attending the summer festivals in Wicker Park, Bucktown, getting coffee on Division Street at Alliance Bakery, Bari for Italian Sausage, Margi’s for candies, Kasia’s for pierogis, and of course, the Italian Fests in the city or suburbs.  He also loved to dance and went to Grant Park every summer to learn various dance moves Thursday through Saturday, dancing the summer nights away.
Victor was very proud of his vast book collection, especially his Chicago history book collection, Italians, current events, and of course, Chicago politics.   His collection spans from the late 1800’s to the present. Victor was a gifted poet and took great delight in giving out poems to people on the street and his family.  Some of his articles and work have been published.  He also loved to share stories with tourists he would meet at various festivals and/or coffee shops.
Victor was very proud to be an Italian.  He loved his Italian roots and it showed.  He loved reading and talking about the Italians and their many contributions to Chicago, America, and the world.
Victor was so much more than the “Neyborhood Guy” (a phrase believed he coined himself with that spelling). He loved his family, loved his friends, and loved our Great City.  His parting words – “Enjoy Life and Travel – Talk to people and find out about them – Be interested in others!”  Victor will be deeply missed, but knowing he is with his parents and siblings who have gone before him gives great comfort to all those whose lives he touched.

Sophie Elizabeth Allen - March 31, 1994 - August 14, 2021

Departed: 08/14/2021 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Sophie Elizabeth Allen was born March 31, 1994 in Tokyo, Japan to Diana Semel Allen and Nicholas St. John Allen. When she was four months old her family moved to the United States and her first home there was at Duke Central Campus married student housing in Durham, North Carolina. Sophie grew up in Cary, NC, graduating from Enloe High School in Raleigh in 2012 before attending her dream school, Duke University, where she lived on Central Campus again for two years, this time as a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity. Sophie received a B.A. in Public Policy from the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy in 2016.
Just before graduation, Sophie met Andrew Pollizzi, the love of her life and fellow Blue Devil. Following graduation, she moved to Washington D.C. and worked as a Senior Associate at Hamilton Place Strategies, a public policy consulting firm, then served as Director of Flag Media Analytics. In May 2020 she and her beloved rescue dog Ollie Bear moved to Orlando, FL to be with Andrew during his studies at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. Sophie secured a position at Robinhood, a financial technology start-up, as a Product Operations Manager. She had been recently placed on a new team there with her eyes on her next adventure - moving to New York City. Sophie and Andrew were set to be married on September 23, 2023 in Raleigh, NC.
Sophie has always been an incredible person: joyful, dynamic, smart, accomplished, outrageously ambitious, and caring just begin to describe her. She was fiercely passionate about everything: friends, family, puppy dogs, soccer, Duke, travel, food, reading, spin cycling, surfing... the list goes on and on. Sophie never met a stranger, and she fully lived every single second of her amazing life with unbelievable energy and joy. She was a natural leader and always left everything on the field. Sophie always confronted every challenge. After being exceptionally healthy her entire life, she was shockingly diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer October 1, 2020. She successfully fought that cancer with everything she had, through six cycles of aggressive chemotherapy, double mastectomy and reconstruction, lymph node removal and five weeks of daily radiation therapy all while continuing the work she loved with Robinhood, and walking Ollie three times every day. On June 24, 2021, after running with Ollie, Sophie completed her last aggressive treatment and had 51 days of pure joy, cancer- and aggressive-treatment free, before the tragedy.
Sophie is survived by legions of friends and her loving and beloved family: fiancé Andrew Pollizzi and dog Ollie; mother Diana Allen and her partner Mark Brady of Cary, NC; father Nicholas Allen, his wife Heather Edelblute and sister Beatrix Allen of West Chester, PA; brother Bennett Allen and his partner Sarah Witmer of Washington D.C.; maternal grandfather Jay Semel and his fiancée Joan Kjaer of Iowa City, IA; paternal grandfather John Anthony Allen of Chelmsford, England; uncle David Semel, aunt Ame Szasz and cousins Isaiah Ramirez and Charlie Semel of San Francisco, CA; aunt Elizabeth Allen, uncle Jon Anscombe and cousin Jacob Anscombe of Chelmsford, England; uncle Mark Allen and aunt June Allen also of Chelmsford, England; and the Pollizzi, Brady, and Edelblute families.
She was preceded in death by her loving and beloved grandmothers Theresa Blazic Semel and Judith Goby Allen.
Services and a celebration of Sophie’s amazing life will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 2 pm at Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh, where Sophie and Andrew had planned to be married, with celebration of life reception to follow (details to be provided once the reception is planned).
Donations in Sophie’s memory are welcome at the charity of your choice or DC Paws animal rescue, which brought Sophie her beloved Ollie (Donate – DC PAWS Rescue); Susan G. Komen (Donate to Susan G Komen to help fight breast cancer); Duke Cancer Institute’s Teen and Young Adult Oncology Program (TYAO) (Make a Gift to TYAO); or Camp Kesem (Donate to Kesem 2020).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online, which often includes a brief biography of the deceased's life, information about funeral services, and notable achievements and relationships. Its primary purpose is to inform the public and honor the person who has passed away.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by a close family member or friend, but sometimes the task can be taken up by a funeral director or an obituary writer at a newspaper.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a short summary of their life story, a list of surviving family members, details of any funeral or memorial services, and often an expression of gratitude or a special message from the family.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary. However, many people find it a meaningful way to share news of a passing with the community and to celebrate the life of the deceased.

How do I choose a newspaper to publish an obituary?

Select a newspaper that serves the community of the deceased. You should also consider the reach you desire for the obituary, whether local, national, or in a community-specific publication.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many online platforms, including social media and memorial websites, allow for the publication of obituaries. Some newspapers also offer the ability to post obituaries through their online branch alongside traditional print.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary often includes a detailed biography and personal anecdotes, while a death notice is a simpler, more official statement that confirms the death and may include information about funeral arrangements without an extended life history.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly but is often dictated by space constraints in print publications or the preference of the family. It is typically a brief summary that conveys important information about the deceased's life and passing.

What are the costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Costs for publishing an obituary can vary widely based on factors like the length of the obituary, the publication it's printed in, and whether it is accompanied by a photograph. Online obituaries might incur fewer or no costs depending on the platform.

Can an obituary include photographs?

Yes, many publications allow for photographs to be included with an obituary, although this usually increases the cost.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

This can depend on when funeral services are planned, but generally, an obituary is published as soon as practical, to promptly inform the community and allow them to make arrangements to attend services.

What tone should an obituary have?

An obituary should reflect the life and personality of the deceased. While it is meant to be a respectful account, it can also incorporate personal and warm qualities, sharing the essence of the person with the community.

What if the deceased prepared their own obituary?

If the deceased wrote their own obituary, family members usually respect their wishes by publishing it as written. This can be a comforting way to honor the deceased's voice and final messages.

Should every family member be mentioned in an obituary?

It is common to list immediate family members, but the decision to include extended family depends on relationships, space, and personal preference.

What about mentioning cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others might share it, especially if it relates to a public tribute or a charitable cause associated with the deceased.

Can you include requests for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, it's common for obituaries to suggest donations to a specific charity or cause that was important to the deceased instead of sending flowers.

How should a surviving spouse be referred to in an obituary?

A surviving spouse is typically referred to by their own name, often preceded by titles like "beloved husband/wife of" or "longtime partner of," followed by the name of the deceased.

What if some sensitive family dynamics complicate the obituary?

When family relationships are complex, it’s best to focus on the positive aspects of the deceased's life and make decisions about family mentions that minimize potential discord. It may also be wise to have several family members review the obituary before publication.

Is it acceptable to add humor to an obituary?

Humor can be used if it fittingly captures the deceased's personality and provides a sense of comfort or joy to those grieving. However, it should be applied thoughtfully and with awareness of the feelings of all who will read it.

How can the family's privacy be protected when publishing an obituary?

To protect privacy, avoid including sensitive personal information such as the deceased's home address, birth date, or any details that may make family members vulnerable to fraud or intrusion.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after publication?

It is sometimes possible to correct information in an online obituary, but for print, it is crucial to carefully proofread before submitting as changes may not be feasible once it is published. Contact the publication immediately if a correction is needed.
