Joyce Elaine Guggisberg - January 12, 1951 - December 08, 2021

Departed: 12/08/2021 (Hibbing)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Elaine Guggisberg, 70, of Buhl, Minnesota, died on December 8, 2021 of complications from COVID-19.
She was born on January 12, 1951, to Bertrum and Phyllis (Merriman) Winger in Little Falls, Minnesota. She was a 1969 graduate of Battle Lake High School where she met Chad Guggisberg who, asking too late to take her to the Homecoming dance, took her to the Homecoming bonfire the night before instead. They dated throughout their Senior year and were married on August 30, 1970, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
Joyce and Chad then moved to the Iron Range (first Keewatin, then Buhl) to attend tech school where she studied to become a medical lab assistant. Joyce’s life career, however, was that of a mother and homemaker. She was the lunch packer, meal planner, costume creator, and last-minute project saver. Joyce was also the biggest fan of her family’s many activities. Although preferring to stay out of the spotlight herself, Joyce’s eyes always lit up when supporting those she loved from the audience, backstage, or on the sidelines.
Joyce was passionate about sewing. Over the years she made, to name but a few things: quilts, wall hangings, mittens, pot holders, dish towels, clothing (even a few prom dresses), and blankets. Everyone Joyce loved owns something she made for them. She also generously shared her knowledge, patiently teaching friends, daughters, and granddaughters some of her many skills. As part of the quilting group at Grace Lutheran Church in Hibbing, she helped make quilts for those in need, sending them as far away as Africa for Wrap-A-Smile. She and Chad made a difference locally, too, as foster parents for a number of years. Joyce enjoyed tending her flower garden, relishing each new bloom throughout the season. In short, her handiwork, whatever form it took, was always imbued with love, and directed towards helping others.
Joyce is survived by her husband Chad Guggisberg who she loved dearly throughout 51 years of marriage; daughters Jennifer (Richard) Samec, Emily (Clayton) Zeidler, and Louisa (Jason) Scorich; granddaughters Maja and Chloe Samec, Jillian, Vienna, and Genevieve Zeidler, and Zelda Scorich; and siblings Ivan (Karla) Winger, Paul (Marky) Winger, Robin (Skip) Are, Ruth Bryan, and Sara (Wayne) Landgraff.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Phyllis Winger; and her brother, Mark Winger.
Joyce’s family thanks the medical teams at Essentia in Virginia and Duluth for their compassionate care.
A private funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 18. The service will be live streamed with the link at www.baumanfuneralhome.com.
Memorial donations may be to the Grace Lutheran Church quilting group in Hibbing.

Obituary Preview: Emily I. LaTendresse, age 92-1/2, longtime resident of Hibbing and formerly of Gheen, MN, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021, peacefully with family at her side.  She was born May 11, 1929, in Mohawk, MI, the daughter of Zigmund and Anna Klakoski.   She was a graduate of Orr High School.  Emily was united in marriage to Maurice LaTendresse on August 25, 1954, in Fargo, ND.  She was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in newspapers and online platforms. It typically includes a brief summary of the person's life, details about their family and loved ones, their significant accomplishments, and information about the funeral or memorial services.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves as a formal notice to the community about the individual's passing and provides a way for others to acknowledge the death, celebrate the person's life, and offer condolences to the family. It is an important part of the grieving process and helps to honor the deceased's legacy.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends, but they can also be prepared by funeral directors or professional writers. Some newspapers have staff writers who interview the family and compose the obituary based on the information provided.

What should an obituary include?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, the place and date of death, a brief biography highlighting major life events, the names of surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial services, and options for memorial contributions if applicable.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no strict standard, but most obituaries are typically brief—a few paragraphs to a full column in length. This allows enough space to convey all necessary information without becoming overly detailed. However, length may vary based on the publication's space constraints and the family's wishes.

Can anyone publish an obituary?

Yes, anyone can write and submit an obituary, but it must meet the publishing guidelines of the chosen platform. There may be costs associated with publishing in newspapers or on certain online sites. Some platforms may have specific requirements for content and verification of death.

Do obituaries have to be published in a newspaper?

No, while newspapers have traditionally been the primary medium for obituaries, there are now many options available including online memorial sites, social media, funeral home websites, and community bulletins.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more factual announcement of death, often without the biographical details and family information found in an obituary. Death notices are usually paid announcements placed by the family.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

It is common to publish an obituary within a week of the death to inform the community and announce any upcoming services. Timing may vary depending on the family's wishes, religious practices, and the time needed to gather information and compose the obituary.

Are obituaries required by law?

No, obituaries are not legally required. However, some legal procedures may require a public notice of death, but this is typically satisfied by a formal death notice rather than a full obituary.

What can I do if I find an error in an obituary?

If you find an error in an obituary, it is best to contact the newspaper or website's editorial department or the family as soon as possible to request a correction. Most publications are willing to correct factual errors.

How do you handle the deceased's digital legacy in an obituary?

The obituary can mention the deceased's digital legacy, such as social media profiles, blogs, or digital assets, but it should not contain sensitive information like passwords or account details. The family may choose to provide instructions for online tributes or memorial pages.

Can an obituary include photographs?

Yes, many publications allow photographs to be included with an obituary. This typically incurs an additional fee and the picture should be of good quality to ensure it reproduces well in print or online formats.

What is a eulogy, and how does it differ from an obituary?

A eulogy is a speech given during a funeral or memorial service that pays tribute to the deceased, usually focusing on their character, influence, and the legacy they leave behind. Unlike an obituary, a eulogy is spoken, more personal, and often shares anecdotes and stories.

How can I ensure that my loved one's obituary stands out?

To create a memorable obituary, focus on the unique aspects of your loved one's life, share personal stories or quirks, and highlight the impact they had on others. Use vivid descriptions and avoid cliche phrases to give a genuine sense of the individual's personality.

Are there alternative ways to honor someone besides a traditional obituary?

Absolutely, alternatives include creating an online memorial page, organizing a charity event in their name, establishing a scholarship, or committing to a memorial planting or bench. These can be done in addition to or instead of a traditional obituary.

What should be considered when writing an obituary for a public figure?

When writing an obituary for a public figure, it's important to acknowledge their public contributions and impact, while also respecting the privacy and wishes of the family. Include significant achievements and why the individual was notable within their public role.

How can I write a respectful obituary for someone who had a difficult life?

Focus on the positive aspects of the person's life, such as their perseverance, relationships, or passions. It's also acceptable to simply state facts about the individual's life without delving into more troublesome areas. Always aim for a tone of respect and dignity.

Can I include details about the cause of death in an obituary?

Yes, you can include the cause of death if you wish and if it is in accordance with the family's wishes. However, many choose to keep this information private, and it's perfectly acceptable to omit these details.

Is it appropriate to ask for charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it's quite common to request charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a way to honor the deceased's memory and support causes that were important to them. Be sure to provide clear instructions for how contributions can be made.

Where can I find examples of obituaries to help me write my own?

There are many resources available online and in print. You can look at obituaries published in local newspapers, seek examples from funeral homes, or use templates from websites that specialize in helping people write obituaries as a starting point.

What are some common phrases or terms used in obituaries?

Common phrases include "passed away," "survived by," "preceded in death by," and "in lieu of flowers." Also typical are terms like "will be dearly missed," "loving memory," "celebration of life," and "eternal rest."
