Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online, which typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and details about surviving family members. It serves as both a form of public announcement and a way to pay tribute to the individual.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by immediate family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance. Additionally, newspaper staff writers may assist in crafting an obituary based on information provided by the family.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, age, date of death, and place of death. It often mentions significant life achievements, education, employment, hobbies, and family members. Details regarding the time and place of funeral services, as well as memorial contribution information, are also commonly included.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it typically ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs, depending on space availability in the publication and the level of detail the family wishes to include. Online obituaries may have more flexibility in length.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is a brief announcement that contains minimal information about the deceased and the funeral arrangements. In contrast, an obituary is more detailed and often includes biographical information and personal tributes.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including newspaper websites, dedicated obituary websites, and social media. Online obituaries offer more space for content and enable easier sharing among family and friends.

Are there costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers charge a fee to publish obituaries, and the cost may be based on length and whether or not a photograph is included. Online platforms may offer free or paid obituary services.

What is the typical process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper?

The process usually involves contacting the newspaper's obituary department, where submission guidelines and deadlines will be provided. The family or the funeral home can then submit the obituary text along with any desired photographs.

How do I write an obituary?

Begin by collecting biographical details about the deceased, such as their full name, age, and significant life events. Structure the obituary with an introduction announcing the death, followed by a biography, family details, funeral or memorial information, and any preferred charities for donations. End with a closing thought or message of remembrance.

Is it appropriate to include personal sentiments in an obituary?

Yes, personal sentiments, anecdotes, and tributes are appropriate in an obituary and can serve to honor the deceased's memory in a meaningful way.

What if I don’t want to publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary is not a requirement. Some families choose to keep arrangements private or may opt for a more informal method of communicating the information, such as through a family network or social media.

Can other people contribute to writing the obituary?

Absolutely. It’s often helpful to involve close friends or family members who may have different perspectives or memories to contribute to a well-rounded portrayal of the deceased.

Should I include the cause of death in the obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal decision. While some families are comfortable sharing this information, others may choose to keep it private. It is important to consider the wishes of the deceased if they were known.

Are there any common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Common phrases include “passed away,” “surrounded by family,” “after a long battle with...,” or “in loving memory of.” Descriptors like “devoted,” “beloved,” and “cherished” are also frequently used when referring to the deceased and their relationships.

What is the purpose of including the survivors and predeceased in the obituary?

This provides a context for the deceased's family network and acknowledges the important people in their life. It often includes close relatives such as a spouse, children, siblings, and sometimes close friends or pets.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

There is no set timeline, but obituaries are generally published as soon as the funeral arrangements have been made, which is typically within a few days to a week after the death, allowing time for friends and extended family to be informed and make arrangements to attend services.

Can I include a photograph with the obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries. They help to personalize the notice and can be a recent picture or one from earlier in life.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

It is not necessary to hire a professional, although some may choose to do so for convenience or to ensure the writing is polished and appropriately conveys the desired sentiments.

How can I ensure accuracy in the obituary?

Before submission, have several family members or close friends review the obituary for factual accuracy and typos. It’s also beneficial to consult official documents for correct dates and spellings of names and places.

Can I update an obituary after it has been published?

In print, once an obituary has been published, it cannot be altered. However, online obituaries can often be updated or edited, although you may need to contact the website administrator or follow specific protocols.

What are some alternatives to traditional obituaries?

These include online memorial pages, social media posts, video tributes, or even having a memory-sharing event where attendees can speak about the deceased's impact on their lives.

How can I find an obituary for someone who has passed away?

You can search for obituaries in local newspapers, on online obituary websites, or by conducting a simple internet search with the person’s full name, date of passing, and location.
