Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often including a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral service, and details of surviving family members. It's typically published in newspapers and online platforms to inform the community and honor the person's life.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is generally more detailed than a death notice. A death notice is a shorter announcement that may simply note the name, age, and fact of death, sometimes with the time and place of the funeral service, whereas an obituary provides a more comprehensive tribute to the person's life and legacy.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. Some newspapers also have staff writers who will compose an obituary based on information provided by the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

Typical information includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, a summary of their life accomplishments, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving family members. Some obituaries also contain special messages of thanks or charitable donation requests.

Is it necessary to write an obituary when someone dies?

It is not legally required to write an obituary, but it is a common practice to acknowledge someone's passing, celebrate their life and inform the community of their death.

How do you choose what to include in an obituary?

Choose details that honor the person's life and legacy, such as significant life events, accomplishments, and personal interests. Including information about family and the funeral service is also important for friends and community members who may want to pay their respects.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely, but it's typically between 200 and 600 words. It should be long enough to convey the necessary information and pay tribute without becoming overly lengthy or burdening the reader.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are published online on newspaper websites, memorial sites, and social media platforms. Online obituaries can also be easily shared with family and friends who live far away.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost can vary greatly depending on the publication's pricing structure. Some newspapers charge by the word, length, or column inch. Others have flat fees for obituaries, with additional charges for photos or extra features.

Can we include a photograph with the obituary?

Most newspapers and online memorial sites allow you to include a photograph with the obituary. There may be an additional fee for this service, and the publication may have specific requirements for the photo's size and quality.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

It is common to publish an obituary as soon as possible after death, ideally within a few days. This helps ensure that the community is informed in time to attend any services or to express condolences.

Are there any privacy concerns with publishing an obituary?

Yes, it's important to consider privacy when publishing details of the deceased and their family. Sensitive information, such as exact birthdates and addresses, should generally be omitted to prevent identity theft or unwelcome solicitation.

How can family members contribute to writing an obituary?

Family members can provide personal anecdotes, important life events, and cherished memories to create a comprehensive and heartfelt tribute. They can also review drafts of the obituary to ensure accuracy and to add anything that may have been left out.

What if the deceased did not want an obituary?

If the deceased expressly did not want an obituary, their wishes should be respected. In some cases, the family may opt for a private notice or simply communicate the death through personal channels.

Should an obituary mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is optional and depends on the family's comfort level. Some families choose to include this information, especially if it relates to a charitable cause, while others prefer to keep it private.

Can obituaries be edited or updated after publication?

In print publications, once an obituary is published, it cannot be edited. However, online obituaries can sometimes be updated or corrected if necessary. It's best to thoroughly review the obituary before submission to avoid the need for revisions.

Are obituaries always written in a formal tone?

Not necessarily. While a professional and respectful tone is common, the style can reflect the personality of the deceased. Some obituaries are written in a more casual or humorous tone to more accurately capture the essence of the individual.

What can be done if a newspaper makes an error in an obituary?

If a newspaper makes an error, the family should contact the publication as soon as possible to correct the online version and, if possible, issue a correction in the next print edition.

Is there a difference in obituary traditions between cultures?

Yes, obituary practices can vary widely between different cultures and religious traditions. Some may have specific customs related to the content, timing, or format of obituaries that reflect their beliefs and values.

How can an obituary be made more personal?

An obituary can be personalized with anecdotes, quotes, or sayings that were meaningful to the deceased. Including their hobbies, interests, and passions can also provide a more personal touch, as can mentioning their impact on their community and loved ones.

What should be done with social media accounts after a person's death?

Handling a deceased person's social media accounts varies by platform. Some sites like Facebook and Instagram allow you to memorialize or deactivate an account. It's important to consult the specific platform's policies and perhaps mention the social media wishes in the obituary if appropriate.
