Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an obituary?

An obituary serves as a public announcement of someone's death, often including a brief account of their life, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a description of their family and major achievements. It's a way for friends, family, and community members to remember the deceased and acknowledge their passing.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

A death notice is a simpler, shorter announcement that often sticks to basic information such as the person's name, date of death, and time and location of the funeral. An obituary is more detailed and personalized, offering a full biography and legacy of the individual.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are often published in local or national newspapers, online obituary platforms, and social media. Some families also choose to include them in funeral programs or on memorial websites dedicated to the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. Occasionally, individuals write their obituaries in advance as part of their final arrangements. Some newspapers also have staff writers who can assist in crafting obituaries.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

No standard length dictates how long an obituary should be. It may vary depending on the platform, pricing (for paid obituaries in newspapers), and the amount of information the family wishes to share. However, most obituaries are a few paragraphs long.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, significant life events, accomplishments, family members, details about the funeral or memorial services, and sometimes a photo. A message of gratitude or a favorite quote or poem may also be included.

How do I start writing an obituary?

Begin with a simple announcement of death, then provide biographical details in chronological order, concluding with service details and a personal message or thank you. Gathering information and significant life events before you start writing can help the process.

Can I include a photo with an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a photo with an obituary. Choose a photo that depicts the person's spirit or one that shows them how you'd like others to remember them.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

It is customary to publish an obituary within a few days of the death to notify others of the passing and provide details of any services being held. This timing also allows friends and extended family to make necessary arrangements to attend services.

Should I mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal decision and not a requirement. Some families choose to share this detail, especially if the deceased was a public figure or if the family is raising awareness about a particular health issue. However, it is perfectly acceptable to omit this information.

What is the etiquette for mentioning survivors or predeceased family members?

When mentioning survivors, it is common to start with the closest relations, such as spouses, children, and grandchildren, followed by extended family. For predeceased family members, mentioning those who were significant in the deceased's life can be a meaningful acknowledgment of their continued impact.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To personalize an obituary, include anecdotes, the individual's hobbies, passions, or unique qualities that made them special. Adding favorite quotes, scripture, or lines from poems can also reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased.

Are there online resources to help me write an obituary?

Yes, there are many online resources that provide templates, guidelines, and tips for writing obituaries. Some funeral homes also offer assistance or can direct you to someone who specializes in writing obituaries.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper varies widely depending on the newspaper's size, location, and pricing structure. Some charge by the word, while others charge by the inch or offer a flat rate. It's best to contact the newspaper directly for their rates.

Is it necessary to have an obituary proofread?

It is highly recommended to have the obituary proofread by someone else before publication. This isn't just for catching typos or grammatical errors—it's also to ensure the information is accurate and that the tone and content reflect your intentions.

Can obituaries be written for people who die unexpectedly?

Certainly. An obituary can and should be written for anyone who has passed away, regardless of the circumstances of their death. It provides a moment to celebrate their life and inform the community of their passing.

What if I don't want to publish the obituary in a newspaper?

Publishing in a newspaper is not a requirement. Many choose to publish obituaries on online memorial sites, social media, or even in the funeral program. The method of sharing is up to the family's preference and wishes of the deceased.

What are the common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include spelling errors, especially with names, getting dates or factual information wrong, being too lengthy, and failing to capture the spirit of the deceased. To avoid these, always fact-check and have someone review the obituary before publication.

Can we ask for donations to a charity in an obituary?

Yes, it is quite common to request donations to a charity in lieu of flowers. This is usually stated towards the end of the obituary, noting the charity's name and potentially a link or address for making donations.

How do we announce a private funeral or omit service details?

If the services are private, you can simply state, "Private services will be held" or "A private ceremony will be conducted at a later date." If you wish not to disclose service details at all, it is not necessary to include them in the obituary.

Is it appropriate to include humorous or lighthearted content in an obituary?

Humor can be appropriate if it aligns with the personality of the deceased and is presented in a respectful manner. It can be a way to celebrate the unique characteristics of the individual and provide solace during a difficult time.
