Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial service, and can include personal messages from the family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is usually a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written by a family member or a journalist, while a death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement of a death, typically written by the family and includes basic information and funeral details.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or professional writers/journalists. Sometimes, individuals write their own obituaries in advance, allowing for a personal touch.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief biography, details of the survivors and predeceased, time and place of the funeral or memorial service, and any preferred charities for donations.

What if I don't want to include certain private details?

It is entirely up to the family how much information is included. Privacy should be respected, and any personal information that the family wishes to keep private should not be included in the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers have specific guidelines for submitting obituaries. Contact the publication directly or visit their website for more information. There may be a charge depending on the length and whether a photograph is included.

Can an obituary be published online only?

Yes, many websites and online memorial platforms allow families to publish obituaries exclusively online. This can be a more cost-effective and wider-reaching option.

How long does an obituary stay in the newspaper or online?

In a newspaper, an obituary typically runs for one day, though it may run longer for an additional fee. Online obituaries can remain indefinitely or for a set period determined by the publication or website.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies greatly depending on the newspaper or website, the length of the obituary, and inclusion of a photograph. Some online platforms offer free submissions, while newspaper obituaries can cost into the hundreds of dollars.

Is it necessary to have an obituary?

No, but it is a common way to publicly acknowledge the death of a loved one, inform the community, pay tribute to their life, and provide service details.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

Consider including anecdotes, personal stories, the deceased's hobbies, passions, achievements, and what they meant to their loved ones. Personal touches make an obituary more meaningful and memorable.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after it has been published?

This depends on where it was published. Newspapers may allow corrections in a subsequent issue, while online obituaries often can be updated easily.

What is an appropriate length for an obituary?

While there is no standard, an obituary can range from a few sentences for a simple death notice, to several paragraphs for a more detailed tribute. Consider the space limitations and costs of where it will be published.

Is it okay to include a photo in an obituary?

Yes, it is quite common to include a recent photograph or a picture that reflects the deceased's life. Some families choose not to include a photo for privacy reasons.

How can I preserve the memory of my loved one through an obituary?

An obituary allows you to highlight the unique aspects of your loved one's life—charity work, career milestones, the impact they had on others. This helps preserve their memory and share their legacy with future generations.

What should I do if I cannot afford to publish an obituary?

Consider online platforms, such as social media, to share your loved one’s passing. Some community newspapers or websites may publish obituaries at a lower cost or even for free.

Should I mention the cause of death in the obituary?

This is a personal choice. If the deceased was well-known or a public figure, the cause of death may be of interest to the community; however, there is no obligation to include such details if privacy is a concern.

Can I ask for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Absolutely. It's quite common to direct well-wishers to make a charitable donation in the deceased's name instead of sending flowers. Be sure to include the name and address or website of the charity.

What is an online memorial site?

An online memorial site is a digital platform where friends and family can create a lasting tribute to the deceased, sharing memories, photos, and messages of condolence. Some also support the publication of digital obituaries.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Typically, obituaries are published soon after death, ideally within a few days to a week. This helps to inform the community in a timely manner, especially if details about the funeral services are included.

How can friends and family contribute to an obituary?

Family members can reach out to friends and extended relatives for stories, quotes, or pictures that can be included. This collaborative approach ensures the obituary is a rich and heartfelt summary of the individual’s life.

Is it possible to publish an obituary for someone who died long ago?

Yes, some people choose to publish a tribute obituary on a significant anniversary of their loved one’s death or if an obituary was never published at the time of passing.
