Brian D Marks - June 01, 1960 - April 20, 2022

Departed: 04/20/2022 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Brian Dudley Marks was born on 6/1/1960, the fifth child of the late Marguerite & Joseph Marks’ seven children. Brian was a dedicated son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He passed peacefully at his home in Buzzards Bay on April 20, 2022, after a short battle with cancer. His quiet nature and loyalty to the family were at the heart of his existence.
Brian’s commitment to his family could always be counted on. He was a selfless person who was always there for anyone who needed help. He was always the first one to jump into action when action was needed. Brian assisted with keeping the doors open to his brother Joe’s restaurant while he was hospitalized, sacrificing his own time to lend support to Michael and his son's during Mike’s time of illness, helping Paul open or close his pool, but most of all, being there to assist in the care and comfort to our mother during her final years.  He could fix anything something he learn from are Father, whether it be as easy as hanging a picture correctly or electrical problems, Brian was your man. But he had to do it alone, he was stubborn like that.  Brian loved spending time with family. He proved this while spending a year with Kathy traveling around the South together to set up store end displays in Florida.  But his greatest joy came from the times he spent with his many nieces and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.  They called him the Fun Uncle.
Friends have shared so many funny, caring stories about Brain, and they all added, boy could he dance. He loved dancing and was always the first one on the dance floor. Bruce Springsteen was his favorite artist with Tom Petty running a close second.  Brian was also very funny; Maureen thinks he got his sense of humor from MAD Magazine and Jerry Lewis movies he loved so much as a kid.  We agree. Brian had so many talents and interest that it is hard to list them all.  He loved boating and was an excellent water skier, he loved food and was a wonderful cook. Growing up he would wake Margie & Paul to watch the sunrise over the lake in Halifax.  Later in life he would join Margie and her family on her boat to watch sunset over that same lake. Then howl at the moon!
Brian lived life on his own terms. And passed on his own terms. Our family will be changed forever without him, but our memories of him will last forever.

Constance A Dunnell - January 15, 1938 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Constance “Connie” Dunnell 1-15-1938 — 4-5-2022
Connie “Nana” Dunnell passed away on April 5, 2022 with cherished loved ones by her side.  A long-time resident of Milton, Massachusetts and recent resident of Wareham, Massachusetts, Connie is predeceased by her loving and adoring husband, James “Grumpy” Dunnell of Milton, Massachusetts.
Connie is survived by her three children, John White of Hull, Massachusetts, Wendy Spinney and her husband Robert of Middleborough, Massachusetts, and Carolyn Fahey and her husband Laurence of Middleborough, Massachusetts. She also leaves her grandchildren, Amanda McGonigle and her husband Michael of East Falmouth, Massachusetts, Rachel Conner and her husband Dustin of Carver, Massachusetts, and Morgan Benedetti of Hanson, Massachusetts.
Her greatest joys were her great-grandchildren, Abigail Kleber of Falmouth, Aiden Conner of Carver, Zachary McGonigle of Falmouth, and Ellie Conner of Carver.  But - if you asked her, her FAVORITE was Maxine, the tiny Yorkshire terrier she shared with Grumpy.
Connie was a woman of faith - not faith in the religious sense - but faith in the more general sense.  She had faith in her family, she had faith in the Lottery, and she had faith in a Higher Power who kept her sober for 30 years.  Connie served VA Boston for over twenty years, including serving as VISN-1 Revenue Manager for CPAC.
She was simple and complex at the same time.  She was simple in that she enjoyed puttering in her garden, playing cards with friends, and being with family - those simple things made her happy.  She was complex in that, whoever got her for the Christmas Gift Exchange, never knew what to get for her.
She was feisty, she was fiercely loyal, and she was loving. She went by many names, but her favorite - by far - was “Nan”.  Her passing will leave a void that nothing can replace, and she will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, or calling her family.
We know that we couldn’t keep her forever, but if she cannot be with us, being reunited with Grumpy is the only next right thing.

She has also joined her darling son, Michael, and her dear parents, Alice and Anthony Farrell. Ruth’s devotion, vibrance, true grit, and business sense will be sorely missed by her family and all who were blessed to call her a friend. She was rightly labeled “a woman ahead of her time”, a role model, and mentor to many as the owner and operator, for 35 years, of Ruth E. McDermott Real Estate of Milton. She inspired and helped many to achieve the American Dream of home ownership and investment. Her volunteer and charity work most notably included her role as The President of the Greater Boston Board of Realtors and years of service to The March of Dimes and The Milton Women’s Club. Over the years Ruth made many fond memories with family and friends at The Wollaston Golf Club, The Neighborhood Club of Quincy, and The Vero Beach Yacht Club.
In semiretirement, Ruth continued to manage her investments and multiple renovation projects up until the last month of her life. Her kind heart and considerable philanthropy served many – she could always be counted on to help when catastrophe struck.
Ruth met both her lung cancer diagnosis and the loss of her husband in 2018 with God given grace and dignity. She waged a noble battle with a positive attitude and lived every day to the fullest, once again setting a stellar example for all, especially her offspring.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center and The Indian River VNA-Hospice of Vero Beach.

Mary Therese Vaccari - June 28, 1926 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Mary Therese Duggan Vaccari
Our exceptional, beautiful mother, Mary, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2022 at the age of 95.  She was born in Milton, MA on June 28, 1926, the first daughter of the late Joseph F. Duggan and Mary A. Troy Duggan.
Mary grew up in Milton within the extended Duggan-Troy clan; a family synonymous with community service.  Her father, Joe, was a highly-distinguished member of the Milton police force, and relatives were renowned city officials. Mom graduated from Milton High School in 1944 and enrolled in Fisher Junior College.  During World War II, when her beloved brother, Joe, left Boston College to become a Navy pilot, Mary volunteered for the Red Cross.  After hours of compulsory “bandage-rolling”, she volunteered to drive ambulances and transports bringing wounded soldiers and sailors to and from USO events in and around the Boston area.
After graduating from Fisher in 1946, Mary worked as an executive secretary in Boston. In January of 1947 she met her future husband, Ralph Vaccari, while both were working on Central Wharf. After an historically brief period of dating (3 weeks!) Dad proposed.  Having experienced the horrific realities of the war, Dad knew (at the grand age of 21) that Mom was destined to be his true love. He saw no point in delay!  They were married on October 30, 1948, both just 22 years old, and settled into the home they literally built themselves in The Woodlands in Wellesley, MA.  There they raised four above-average children: Trisha, Ralph Jr., Pamela, and Steven. Their storied love and loyalty for each other was only ever surpassed by their dedication to family and friends.
Mary and Ralph were gifted with a loving, tight-knit family and an ever-expanding group of forever friends. Mary was known as “Babe” to her family and those dearest to her.  You had reached the innermost circle if she told you, “Please, call me Babe”.  There was always another party, rarely a dull moment, and never any regrets. The stories are too many and too funny for this limited space.
Our parents’ loving marriage remained true and strong for 61 years, until Dad’s death in 2009 at age 83.  Mom’s determination to squeeze every drop out of this life kept her with us for another 13 years.  Today, and forever, Dad and Mom are united once again.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brother Joseph and her sister Patricia Susi.  She is survived by her sister Kathleen Lynch, her brother-in-law Edward Vaccari, and her sisters-in-law Anne Duggan and Ruth Boiardi.  Her youngest son, Steven, died by suicide in 2006.  She carried the pain of his death until her own.
Mary is survived by her eldest daughter Trisha and her spouse Denise Bisaillon, her eldest son Ralph Jr. and his wife Susanne Pariente, and her youngest daughter Pamela and her husband Daniel “Sandy” Macdonald.  Mom was unashamedly the ever-indulgent Grandmother to Rachel Pariente Vaccari Robbins (and husband Cameron Robbins), Ana Vaccari Bisaillon (and husband Philip van den Braak), Jeffrey Pariente Vaccari (and partner Brian Smith), and Alexander Vaccari Macdonald. And although hard to imagine, her love soared to new heights with the addition of her three great-grandchildren Jackson, Oliver, and Emerson Robbins.  She also is survived by numerous, loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
We have no doubt that Mary would have stayed here with us forever, were that possible.  Despite years of increasing heart failure, she clung to this life with an indomitable spirit, she cherished every opportunity to gather with family and friends, was quick with a story, rewarded humor with her burst of infectious laughter, and loved her family fiercely, endlessly.  We were blessed to have her as our mother, our friend, our source of strength, wisdom, and support.  Truly, there will never be another like her.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 – 7pm on Friday, April 1 at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home, 326 Granite Ave. Milton.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams St. Milton at 10:30am on Saturday, April 2.
In celebration of Mary’s life, and in honor of a cause dear to her, please consider a donation in her name, in memory of Steven, to The NAN Project non-profit promoting awareness of depression and suicide and access to life-saving support. Juan Ortiz Silva - July 04, 1935 - March 01, 2022

Departed: 03/01/2022 (Milton)
Obituary Preview: Juan Maria Ortiz Silva of Quincy, who was lovingly referred to as Papi, Pop, Papito, Abuelo, Né and Juanín passed away at the age of 86 in the company of his loving family on March 1st.  Juan was a strong, independent and vibrant man who was born and raised in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, the son of Ramona Silva and Delores Ortiz.  At the age of 18 he moved to New York City, where he met the love of his life, Maria Teresa Santana, who became his wife for 67 years and predeceased him.  Both had left the “isla del encanto” to find better opportunities and in the process, found each other and built a life together that included 5 children.  Juan was the loving father of Carmen Ortiz and husband Tom Dolan of Milton, Juanita Diaz and husband Hector of Framingham, Juan Ortiz, Jr. and wife Tanya of NJ, Jose Ortiz of FL and Elizabeth Ortiz Murray of Quincy.  He was the cherished grandfather of Jacqueline, Alisandra, Miquela, Olivia, Marie, Michael, Matthew, Johnny and Marcus.
Juan spent most of his life working incredibly hard to provide for his family, initially working in the garment industry as a factory worker and then driving a taxi cab.  He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories and jokes that he was able to turn into good tips because his passengers always loved their cab rides with him.  When he wasn’t driving a cab, he was selling whatever he could on Delancey Street in New York City, selling goods from curbside tables and saving money to open up a small gift and religious goods store, known as a “botanica.”  Driven by his dream to open up his own business and move his family from the housing projects to a home on Long Island, his tremendous work ethic enabled him to do just that.  He opened up “Ortiz Gifts” and sold everything from rosary beads, candles, good luck perfumes, battery-powered toys, dolls, figurines, holiday cards and whatever he thought his customers would buy.  He loved the retail business and never took a break, eventually opening up another store and at times, having every member of the family work with him. In addition to running the business, Juan spent fun times with his family.  Day trips to Orchard Beach, Coney Island and vacations visiting Puerto Rico in the summer, will be memories his family will treasure, as well as going out to eat – a real treat.  Juan thoroughly enjoyed eating and was known for his ferocious appetite, especially for authentic Puerto Rican food such as “arroz con gandules verde” and “vianda con bacalao.”  Everyone who spent time with Juan was never bored.  He loved watching the news, being on top of all political events and debating with anyone who didn’t agree with him.  He was an intense, knowledgeable and interesting conversationalist, who could hold his own on any topic.  He was also entertaining and would recite a story as if it were fact and when asked how he knew it was true, he would jokingly say “I read it in the Enquirer.”
Juan adored his mother who was widowed when he was only 3 years old and raised him and his younger brother Raymond.  He was proud of saying that watching his mother overcome life’s struggles made him tough and a survivor.  Juan was a man of true grit, having survived a kidney transplant over 12 years ago at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a hospital where he felt the doctors and nurses took good care of him throughout the years and at the time of his death.
Juan loved his family very much and was determined to do the best he could for them.  He often bragged about his children’s accomplishments and was very proud of them. Juan will be remembered for the many sacrifices he made for them and will be terribly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Alfred D. Thomas Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave Milton, Saturday March 12th at 12 noon.  Visiting hours prior to the service from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  In my father’s memory, contributions can be made online or by check made payable to “Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center” with Transplant Unit on the memo line. Contributions can be mailed to: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Office of Development, 330 Brookline Ave – OV, Boston, MA 02215.
