Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person’s death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of their life, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may include a message of remembrance or a call to action for donations to a charity in their honor.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves as a formal announcement of death and provides an opportunity for the community to celebrate the deceased’s life. It helps to inform friends, acquaintances, and the public about the passing and details of any services that are planned. It also acts as a historical record for future generations.

Who writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by a family member, friend, or the funeral home staff. In some cases, individuals write their own obituaries in advance as a way to ensure their wishes are reflected and to alleviate the burden on their family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the full name of the deceased, their age, the date of their passing, a brief overview of their life (such as career, hobbies, or services), information about the surviving family, details of the funeral or memorial service, and any charitable donation suggestions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. Some are brief, just including essential details, while others may be longer and include a comprehensive account of the deceased's life and accomplishments. The length can be influenced by space constraints in print publications or personal preference for online obituaries.

What tone is appropriate for an obituary?

An obituary should be written with a tone that reflects the life and wishes of the deceased. While it is a somber announcement, it can also celebrate life with warmth, respect, and dignity. Tone can range from formal and reverent to personal and anecdotal, depending on the individual's personality and the family's wishes.

Can obituaries include photographs?

Yes, obituaries can include photographs. A picture can provide a personal touch and help readers connect with the deceased. Newspapers and online platforms often accommodate a photo along with the text of the obituary.

What should I do if I notice a mistake in an obituary?

If there is a mistake in an obituary, you should contact the publication or website where it appears as soon as possible. If you're a family member or closely involved in the services, provide the correct information, and request an amendment or correction.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is usually shorter, often paid for by the family, and includes just the basic information about the deceased’s passing and the service arrangements. An obituary is more detailed and often includes a biographical sketch of the deceased.

How can an obituary help in the grieving process?

Writing an obituary can be a therapeutic process for loved ones as it allows them to reflect on the positive aspects and accomplishments of the deceased’s life. Reading about the deceased's contributions and how they touched the lives of others can also be comforting during a time of grief.

Can obituaries be rejected or edited by publishers?

While rare, obituaries can be rejected or edited by publishers, especially if the content is deemed inappropriate or offensive. Publishers also reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, or to meet publication standards.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries can be published in local, regional, or national newspapers, as well as online on various websites dedicated to obituaries, social media, or the funeral home's website.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, and pricing can also depend on whether a photograph is included. Some online obituary platforms offer free posting options.

Do I need to include personal details such as the cause of death in an obituary?

There is no requirement to include personal details such as the cause of death in an obituary. Some families choose to include this information, while others prefer to keep it private. The decision should be respected and is entirely at the discretion of the family or the deceased’s last wishes.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral?

Yes, an obituary can be published after the funeral services have taken place, although it is more common to publish it beforehand to notify people of the details of the memorial service.

What are some common phrases used in obituaries?

Common phrases in obituaries include "passed away," "surrounded by loved ones," "in loving memory of," "celebration of life," "survived by," and invitations to "honor the memory" of the deceased. These phrases are often used to convey the essence of the person’s life and the circumstances of their passing.

Is it appropriate to add humor to an obituary?

Humor can be appropriate in an obituary if it reflects the personality of the deceased and is used with care and respect. It's important that it does not offend readers or distract from the purpose of the obituary, which is to notify others of the loss and to remember the deceased.

How is an obituary verified for authenticity?

An obituary is typically verified by the funeral home or crematory handling the services. They confirm the death with the appropriate authorities and may provide documentation to the publishing entity. For private submissions, a publication might request a copy of the death certificate or confirmation from a mortuary.

What if I can't afford to pay for an obituary?

If you cannot afford to pay for an obituary, there may be free or low-cost options available online. Additionally, some local papers have community columns where brief death notices can be published at minimal or no cost.

Can I post an obituary on social media?

Yes, you can post an obituary on social media platforms which can serve as a way to reach a wide audience without incurring the costs associated with traditional publishing. However, it's important to be aware of privacy and be respectful of those who may not have been informed of the death yet.

What happens to online obituaries over time?

Online obituaries may remain on the hosting website indefinitely, although some may only display them for a fixed period or require a subscription for continued access. It’s advisable to make a copy or print the obituary for personal records.
