Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person. It typically includes a brief biography of the deceased, details about their family, and information about the funeral or memorial services. Obituaries serve to inform the community of the person's passing and to celebrate their life.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, and on the websites of funeral homes. They may also appear in national newspapers, trade publications, or church bulletins, depending on the individual's reach and impact.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, often including only the name, date of death, and details of the memorial service. An obituary is more detailed, providing a biography of the deceased and often including anecdotes and personal information that reflects on the person's life.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Oftentimes, a close family member or the executor of the deceased's estate will write an obituary. However, a family may also request the assistance of a funeral director, a professional writer, or even a journalist to compose a fitting tribute.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no set standard for the length of an obituary, it can vary greatly. Some obituaries are brief, conveying essential information in a few paragraphs, while others are more extensive. The length may depend on the individual's life story, achievements, and family wishes, as well as the cost of publication, which is typically based on length.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief account of their personal and professional life, names of surviving family members, details of the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a cause of death. It can also include a photo, special messages, acknowledgments, or a request for donations to a charity.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Most newspapers and online platforms charge a fee to publish an obituary because it is considered a paid announcement. Fees vary depending on the publication, length, and inclusion of photos or additional features.

Can an obituary be written before a person dies?

Yes, it is not uncommon for obituaries to be written in advance, especially in the case of prominent individuals or when someone has a terminal illness. This can provide time to carefully reflect on the person’s life and accomplishments without the added stress during a time of grief.

How can I ensure an obituary is respectful and accurate?

To ensure an obituary is respectful and accurate, proofread the text carefully for factual information and tone. Consulting with close family and friends for factual verification and shared memories can help create a respectful and accurate tribute.

What if I can’t afford the cost to publish an obituary?

If you are unable to afford the cost of publishing an obituary, consider alternative options such as free community newspapers, social media, your local church's bulletins, or creating an online memorial on a free platform.

There are no legal requirements to publish an obituary. It is entirely a personal choice for the family. However, some legal notices related to the death, such as estate or probate notices, may be required based on local laws.

Should I include the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice. Some families choose to include this information, especially if the deceased was a public figure or if they wish to raise awareness about a specific disease or condition. However, it is not a requirement, and privacy around the circumstances of a death is completely acceptable.

What’s the best way to begin writing an obituary?

The best way to begin writing an obituary is by collecting basic information about the deceased's life, such as birthdate, place of birth, family details, major life accomplishments, and interests. Start with a factual statement of death, and proceed to flesh out the person’s biography in a respectful and celebratory tone.

Can friends contribute to an obituary?

Yes, friends can contribute anecdotes, personal stories, and other details that might offer a fuller picture of the deceased's life. Including contributions from friends can add depth to the obituary and help highlight different aspects of the person's character and impact on others.

How do I handle family disputes when writing an obituary?

In case of family disputes, it is important to remain neutral and focus on facts that are agreeable to all. Ultimately, strive to honor the life and wishes of the deceased. If necessary, seek an impartial third party's assistance, such as a clergy member or family counselor, to help mediate differences.

What is the etiquette for including step-relatives or ex-spouses in an obituary?

The etiquette for including step-relatives or ex-spouses is to respect the connection they had to the deceased. If they were a significant part of the person’s life or are key members of the family, they should be included. Be sensitive to family dynamics and make this decision based on the closeness of the relationships.

Is it okay to include a request for donations instead of flowers?

Yes, it is quite common for obituaries to include a request for donations in lieu of flowers, especially to a charity or cause that was meaningful to the deceased. Be sure to include clear details about where and how donations can be made.

Can I include a poem or quote in an obituary?

Absolutely, incorporating a meaningful poem, quote, or scripture can provide comfort and reflect the personality or beliefs of the deceased. It can add a personal touch to the obituary and provide solace to the bereaved.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary after it has been published?

If you find an error after publication, contact the newspaper or platform immediately to correct the mistake. Most publications are willing to correct errors in subsequent editions or online postings.

How long do obituaries typically remain online?

How long an obituary remains online can vary. Some online obituary platforms may keep them online indefinitely, while newspaper websites might archive them after a certain period. Family members can usually request a permanent online tribute through dedicated memorial websites.

Is it appropriate to share an obituary on social media?

Sharing an obituary on social media is a common and appropriate way to spread the word about someone's passing, especially to friends and family who may be dispersed geographically. It can also create an online space for people to share their condolences and memories.
