Gerald W. Cummins - June 06, 1940 - October 27, 2021

Departed: 10/27/2021 (East Brunswick)
Obituary Preview: Gerald Cummins was a foodie with the motto “Food is Love.”  If you ever shared a meal with Jerry, whether it was a simple pot of chili or a Sunday brunch with all the fixings, be assured he was sharing love. He may have been outwardly intimidating, but was all teddy bear inside.  He was the family’s biggest cheerleader and could often be heard telling his children and grandchildren, “You are a Cummins!  You can do anything!”
He had many different jobs in his lifetime that included locksmith, restaurant host, and teacher.  He most enjoyed his time serving his country in the United States Army, and was most proud of his time serving Colts Neck, NJ as Chief of Police.  He actively supported the Boy Scouts of America, held office within the American Legion, and held office within the Blue Knights of NJ.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycle for charity and fun, and used to be the talk of the Elementary School when he would drop off his children in the mornings.  He was also an advocate for animal rights and volunteered for the ASPCA.
Gerald was 81 when he passed on October 27, 2021.  He leaves behind his wife of 56 years (Bonnie Cummins), 2 children (Christopher Cummins and Kelly Cummins-Brown), 2 grandsons (Cody and Kevin Cummins), and 2 granddaughters (Abigail and Kathryn Brown).

Obituary Preview: Ronald J. Osmond, 56, beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 22nd, 2021. He was born on May 19th, 1965 in Rahway, NJ to Otto and Blanche Osmond.
Ron married the love of his life, Christine in 1989. They settled in Sayreville, NJ to raise three beautiful daughters, Jessica, Stefanie, and Kimberly. Ron was an outstanding husband and father who would do anything for those that he loved.
Ron was so proud of the family business, OJO Trucking, where he spent 35 years working as a truck driver. He truly loved working with his siblings throughout the years. The company operated for 48 years.
Ron was the kindest and most loving soul. He enjoyed spending time with his family, long afternoon naps on the weekends, telling stories of his childhood, and changing the lyrics of well known songs to something funny. He always appreciated a good meal and often said delicious desserts should be “illegal” because they were so good. He loved being silly, practical jokes, and making bets with people to do outrageous things. It wasn’t uncommon for him to offer you $100 to shave one of your eyebrows off.
A self proclaimed happy-go-lucky guy, Ron also had a heart of gold. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to someone in need. His generous and loving nature did not go unnoticed by the countless friends, relatives and family whose lives he impacted over the years.
Ron was deeply loved and supported through the end of his life by his brothers Jim, George, and Jerry Osmond.
To honor Ron’s wishes, there will be no funeral. Please join us on Friday, October 29, 2021 at the Knights of Columbus, 3 Lasatta Ave, Englishtown, NJ 07726 between 4:00-8:00PM for a celebration of life in his memory. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online. It serves as a formal announcement and often includes a brief biography, details about the funeral services, and information about surviving family members. The tone of an obituary is usually respectful and commemorative, celebrating the life and legacy of the deceased.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, age, date of death, and place of death. It often contains a summary of the person's life, achievements, and information about the surviving family members. Additionally, details regarding the time and location of the funeral service, wake, or memorial may be provided, along with instructions for flowers, donations, or other forms of tribute.

How do I write an obituary?

To write an obituary, start by gathering the necessary information about the deceased, such as their life milestones, family members, and any special requests they might have had for their obituary. Write in a respectful tone, focusing on the positive aspects of their life, and be sure to include any pertinent funeral service details. It's important to proofread the obituary for accuracy before publication.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary. It can vary from a brief notice to a detailed account of the person's life. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, so length may also be determined by the budget allocated for the obituary's publication.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Typically, a close family member or the executor of the deceased's estate takes responsibility for writing the obituary. However, it can be assigned to a friend, a family spokesperson, or a professional writer, depending on the family's preferences.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, photographs are commonly included with obituaries, especially when published online. A photo can be a recent portrait or a picture that captures a significant time in the deceased's life. Be aware that printed newspapers may charge an additional fee for including photos.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed announcement that may include the deceased's biography, significant life events, and information about the funeral services. A death notice, on the other hand, is typically a shorter, more straightforward statement of the person's passing, date of death, and service information, often without additional biographical details.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral service?

Obituaries are usually published as soon as possible after a person's death to inform the community and announce the service details. However, depending on circumstances or family preference, an obituary may be published after the funeral service has taken place.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary greatly depending on the publication, its circulation size, and the length of the obituary. Online obituaries may be less expensive or even free in some cases. It's best to inquire directly with the publication for their rates.

Is it necessary to have an obituary?

While not legally required, obituaries serve as a traditional way to notify the community of a person's passing and provide information about the funeral services. They also serve as a record and tribute to the person's life.

How do you submit an obituary to a newspaper or online?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the publication's obituary department for their submission guidelines and deadlines. For online obituaries, many websites have a submission form and instructions for posting. You may need to prepare the text in advance and have a digital photo ready if you wish to include one.

There are no specific legal requirements for the content of an obituary, but it should not include defamatory or false information. It's essential to respect the privacy of the deceased and the surviving family members by not disclosing sensitive personal information.

Can an obituary be published in multiple locations?

Yes, obituaries can be published in multiple newspapers and online platforms to reach a broader audience, especially if the deceased has connections in different communities or regions.

Can the family choose not to publish an obituary?

Absolutely. The decision to publish an obituary is entirely up to the family or the executor of the estate. Some families may opt for a private remembrance or may prefer not to publish an obituary for personal reasons.

What happens if an obituary contains incorrect information?

If an obituary contains incorrect information, the publishing newspaper or website can typically issue a correction or updated version. It's important to contact the publication as soon as possible to rectify any errors.

Can an obituary be written for someone who died some time ago?

Yes, obituaries can be written and published posthumously, regardless of the time since the person's passing. This can be a meaningful way to memorialize someone on a significant date, such as an anniversary of their death or birth.

How do you handle an obituary for a person with a complicated or contentious family situation?

When writing an obituary for someone with a complex family dynamic, it's important to be as inclusive and respectful as possible. Avoiding negative details and focusing on the person's life and legacy can help prevent additional stress for the family during a difficult time.

Can friends submit obituaries or only family members?

Friends can submit obituaries as long as they have gathered the appropriate information and have obtained permission from the deceased's family to make the announcement.

Is there a deadline to submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Newspapers typically have specific deadlines for submitting obituaries to ensure they are published on time, especially if they need to appear before the funeral services. It is recommended to check with the individual publication for their particular deadlines.

Are obituaries considered public records?

While obituaries themselves are not public records, the information they include, such as the fact of death and service details, is a matter of public interest. Obituaries are accessible to the public when published in newspapers or online.

Can someone pre-write their own obituary?

Yes, it's not uncommon for individuals to pre-write their obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that the obituary reflects their wishes and takes some of the burden off family members during a time of grief.
