Robert Lee Smith - July 06, 1941 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (South Charleston)
Obituary Preview: Robert Lee Smith (Robbie), 82, of Charleston, WV passed away peacefully at home on Monday April 8th, 2024.
He was born July 6th, 1941 in Charleston, WV to Edward and Mary Smith. He went on later in life to become a mechanic and a jack of all trades. Robbie leaves behind a void that can never be filled but he leaves behind a legacy of laughter and memories that will forever be cherished. His family and friends will forever remember his pranks and strong personality for everyone. He had a love for cars and would rather fix something instead of getting something new. There was always a twinkle in his eyes and he always saw the highest potential in anything he saw. Whether that be cars, equipment, jobs, and most of all people. Robbie had a love for not just tinkering with things, but he had a huge love for fishing and hosting cookouts. Many of the greatest memories his family and friends have of him are when he was fishing and conducting cookouts. He turned even the most mundane occasions to laughter and fun. Beyond his passions for pranks, fishing, cars, and cookouts he was a man of strength and conviction. He had a will of steel and was always unafraid to speak his mind.
Robbie will be greatly missed but his memory will be cherished forever by all that have met him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Dennis Smith and Mary M. Smith along with his sister Mary A. Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Isabelle C. Smith of Charleston and children Edward L. Smith of Dunbar, Robin Weyer of Minnesota, and Debbie Taylor of Sissonville. He leaves behind four grandchildren; Eric, Tiffany, Harley, and Jason. Along with three great-grandchildren; Oliver, Amora, and Lakelynn. He is also survived by his two brothers Franklin and John Smith.
Memorial service will be held from Noon-6pm Thursday April 11, 2024 at Coonskin Park Family Center, 2000 Coonskin Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.

Joseph Allen Barker Jr. - December 07, 1954 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (South Charleston)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Allen Barker Jr. passed away on March 1, 2024 at the age of 69, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was the only child of Joseph Allen Barker Sr. and Chris Barker.
Joe is survived by his children, in order of age: Alicia Diane Leyda, Ashley Nicole Russell, John D. Russell, Kayla Michelle Carroll, and Thomas Allen Russell; grandchildren, in order of age: his “pride and joy” Braxton Andrew Leyda, his “top dog” Bryson Christopher Leyda, his namesake Connor Joseph Leyda, and his “baby bears” Zoe Jane Tippie and Layla Dawn Echols. We want to make special mention of the love of his life and lifelong friend, Debbie Carroll.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Joseph Allen Barker Sr. and Chris Barker; grandparents: Dee and Thula Barker; previous wife, Robin Barker; and many dear friends he made through both his struggles and triumphs with the disease of addiction.
Joe also had many cousins, far too many to mention by name...and friends…and people that he helped…and people that he cared about. He loved all of our children, he was “Papa Bear” to all of us, and “Poppy” to all of them; he let each one know that they were special.
We want to give a special thank you to our friend, Stephanie Foster, for her love and care for our Dad in his death.
Joe lived an incredibly full life. He resided in many places all over the U.S., but in his heart, he had a special connection to Texas- “Hook ‘em Horns” Joe. And by the way, beans don’t belong in chili, y’all.
Joe was a positive influence on anyone he met. His life was centered around service in many ways. He was loud- good grief, he was loud- and don’t call him on the phone unless you’re prepared to try and end the call 100 times before you just have to hang up. Shutting up was definitely not one of his strengths, hmmmm... His life was all about staying connected to other people.
Joe Barker was an essential member of the American Red Cross team in the Central Appalachia Region. He was a longtime member of the Service to the Armed Forces team with the Red Cross. He was also a nationally accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO) volunteer for the American Red Cross. Jose was a Hero Care Center Caseworker, assisting hundreds of veterans in this capacity.
Within the Red Cross, Joe was also a longtime member of the Disaster Team and over numerous years, served as a Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member, Mass Care Team Member, Home Fire Campaign Team Member, Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) Driver, and Home Fire Educator.
In 2023, Joe received the President of the United States’ President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award (500 hours of service for 2022) and the President’s Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award (4,000 hours of lifetime service). When Joe received the Lifetime Achievement Award, he had served the Red Cross as a volunteer for over 10,000 hours. He will be recognized again in 2024 as a President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award recipient.
Joe earned his BSW through West Virginia State in 2018, and he worked hard for that accomplishment, of which he was very proud.
Through his own experience with substance use disorder, Joe touched many lives and many, MANY people seeking recovery.
His service in recovery showed up in formal ways but more importantly, on an individual level. He never gave up on anyone, even through his own struggles with the disease. You didn’t have to wonder if Joe cared about you; he did. If he were here right now (and I believe he is), he’d want me to tell you that if you’re seeking recovery, there is help and WE believe in you.
To honor Joe’s memory, we are holding a celebration of his life on March 30, 2024, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 520 Kanawha Blvd. W, Charleston, WV at 12:30pm. Come with your stories about Joe and share them. We expect to laugh and cry and have a good time remembering a man larger than life. A reception will follow the service.

What information should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their age, date of death, and place of death. It often includes a brief summary of their life, significant relationships, career accomplishments, interests, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length, as obituaries can vary from a brief death notice to a lengthier life story. However, when outsourced to a publisher, the length may be limited by cost considerations or space provided by the newspaper or online service.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a photograph with an obituary. This typically features a portrait of the deceased, but can also include a picture that captures a significant moment or aspect of their life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement of someone's passing, which simply states the facts of death, and service details if applicable. An obituary is longer and includes a narrative of the person’s life, achievements, and personality.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days of a person’s death, although there is no strict timeline. It should allow enough time for friends and family to be informed of service details if they wish to attend.

Most publications will allow corrections to be made if errors are found after publishing. It is important to contact the publication as soon as possible to request any changes.

What if I want to keep certain information private?
