Robert Michael McMillan - February 29, 1980 - January 01, 2023

Departed: 01/01/2023 (Lake Villa)
Obituary Preview: Robert Michael McMillan, 42, of Antioch, Illinois passed away unexpectedly on January 1, 2023. He will be greatly missed as a father, husband, brother, uncle, son and friend.
Robert was born on February 29th – Leap Day – in Springfield, Illinois to Bill and Jennie McMillan, the fourth child of six. The family moved to Ingleside, Illinois when Robert was 9. Rob graduated from Grant High School in 1999. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Sacramento, California. Robert worked for EMCO Chemicals and would have celebrated his 20 year anniversary this year.
Robert met Melissa on December 22, 2002, and they were married 4 months later. In their 20 years together, they moved in the north Chicagoland area a few times, spending the majority of their time in Fox Lake and Antioch. Melissa and Robert have 4 beautiful children.
Robert took "fandom" to a whole new level. His love for his hometown Chicago Cubs, Bulls and Bears was surpassed only by the manner in which he cheered on and supported everyone else around him. Within minutes of arriving, Rob would have made friends with everyone within a high-five's reach of his seat in any stadium. And his support didn't end with his favorite teams. In recent years, he could be heard supporting the teams of his friends and loved ones - and not just the easy-to-support Kansas City Chiefs. It even extended to teams that were tough to support - namely the Detroit Lions. But never the Packers. But he still loves some specific Packer fans.
Robert was also an athlete, having lettered in multiple sports throughout his formative high school years, including basketball, football and track & field. He continued his love for basketball as an adult, often playing on weekends against players much younger - though never quite as sneaky-fast - as him.
Rob enjoyed playing video games with friends and family, and actively participated in fantasy football - through which he always enjoyed strengthening existing relationships with his family and friends.
Of all his interests and hobbies, supporting his children (in their athletic - and other - interests) took top priority. He could often be found cheering heartily on the sidelines as both an assistant coach and loving and passionate parent. He was also well known for attending and supporting his nieces and nephews at their activities as well - and reliving their successes with as much passion as a play-by-play announcer on the rides home.
Rob’s absence in the lives of those who knew him leaves a deep void. Robert is survived by his wife, Melissa, children Avery, Zoe, Harper and Weston, mother Jennifer, brother David, and sisters Judy Luther (Michael), Becky McMillan (Danielle), Marcia Linderman (Rob) and Christa Nava. He is preceded in death by his father, William.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed his fellowship with the Church members. He endured many years of pain due to his cancer diagnosis, yet it was his faith in God and love of life and those in his life that gave him the strong will to live. Through this difficult time, Dale was an inspiration to everyone he met. He set an example of faithfully enduring to the end. Now he is free, and on November 1, 2022, his pain came to an end when he passed away at home.

It serves as a notice to the community and a way to celebrate and honor the life of the deceased.

Where are obituaries typically published?

How long after a death is an obituary published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days after a death to allow time for the family to make arrangements and provide necessary information. The timeline can vary depending on the publication processes of newspapers or online platforms.

What is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life and accomplishments, names of surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and sometimes a photograph.

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

Most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary, which varies based on length, publication circulation, and whether a photograph is included. Online obituary services may offer free or paid options, depending on their business model.

Can an obituary be published online only?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Be sure to include significant accomplishments, hobbies, and information about surviving family members.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, you can include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. Be sure to provide the name and address of the charity to make it easier for people to donate.

How can I respect the deceased’s privacy when writing an obituary?

To respect privacy, avoid sharing sensitive personal details such as the deceased's home address or cause of death if it is considered private. Focus on the individual's life, legacy, and the love they shared with family and friends.

What do I do if the deceased left specific instructions for their obituary?

If the deceased left specific instructions for their obituary, do your best to honor their wishes while ensuring the content is appropriate for public reading. You may need to work with family members to balance personal desires with general expectations for an obituary.

Is it okay to post an obituary on social media?

It is becoming increasingly common to share obituaries on social media as a way to reach friends and family who may not have access to the original publication. Make sure that the content is respectful and considerate of all individuals who might read it.

Can anyone write and submit an obituary?

While typically a family member writes and submits an obituary, anyone close to the deceased who has relevant information and consent from the family can undertake this task. It's important to communicate with the family to ensure the obituary accurately reflects their wishes.

How should I begin an obituary?

Begin an obituary with an announcement of the death, the person's full name, age at the time of death, and the date and place of their passing. This introduction serves as the foundation for the rest of the information about their life and legacy.

What’s the best way to conclude an obituary?

An obituary is often concluded with details of the funeral or memorial service, any visitations, and a thank you note or final words from the family. Optionally, you can end with a meaningful quote, poem, or passage that holds significance to the deceased or their family.
