Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online, that provides a brief biography of the deceased's life. It includes details like the date of birth, family details, achievements, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is different from a death notice. A death notice is a short announcement of someone's death, usually paid for by the family, and provides basic details like the name, age, and information about the funeral service. An obituary is more detailed and often includes a more personal or comprehensive account of the person's life and legacy.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or funeral directors. Sometimes, journalists or professional obituary writers are employed to write obituaries, especially for public figures or when a more polished or literary piece is desired.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, date of birth and death, brief biography, list of surviving and predeceased family members, information about the funeral or memorial service, and sometimes a special message or acknowledgment from the family.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves several purposes: it informs the community of a person’s passing, honors the life of the deceased, celebrates their accomplishments, and provides details on the service arrangements. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local or national newspapers, on funeral homes’ websites, on memorial websites, and on social media platforms. They can also be posted in community newsletters or church bulletins.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper or website, you can contact the publication directly and they will provide submission guidelines, which often include word count limitations, costs, and deadlines. Online submission forms are also commonly available on publication websites.

Are there costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, there are often costs associated with publishing an obituary in a newspaper, which can vary depending on the publication's pricing structure, the length of the obituary, and whether photos are included. Online obituaries can sometimes be published for free or at a lower cost.

How long after death should an obituary be published?

There is no set rule, but obituaries are typically published within a few days to a week after the death. This timeframe allows for the announcement to be made in a timely manner while giving the family time to plan the details of the obituary.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after publication?

Yes, most publications will allow for updates or corrections to be made to an obituary. However, it may involve additional costs or it may be corrected for free if the error was the fault of the publication.

What is the appropriate tone for an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and reflect the life and personality of the deceased. It can range from formal and straightforward to more personal and anecdotal. The important aspect is to convey the significance of the person’s life and their impact on others.

Is it okay to include personal anecdotes or stories in an obituary?

Yes, including personal anecdotes or stories can make an obituary more engaging and personal. These elements can highlight the deceased's character, values, or the difference they made in the lives of others. However, it is essential to keep these stories respectful and appropriate for a wide audience.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others may include it to provide closure or raise awareness about a particular illness or issue. There is no right or wrong answer, and it should be up to the family’s discretion.

How do you handle conflicting opinions within the family regarding obituary content?

When there are differing opinions about the content of an obituary, it's important to communicate openly and respectfully. Discuss the purpose of the obituary and try to reach a consensus that honors the deceased's memory while taking into account the feelings of all family members involved.

Can I include a request for donations or charitable contributions in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for donations or charitable contributions in lieu of flowers. These requests should specify the details of the charity or cause and how to make the donation.

How can I ensure an obituary is unique and reflects the individual's personality?

To make an obituary unique, include specific details about the person's life, such as hobbies, passions, and life stories. Use descriptive words and phrases that resonate with the individual's personality. Consider sharing a favorite quote or saying of theirs, or a lesson they lived by.

What should I do if I cannot afford to publish an obituary?

If cost is an issue, consider free options such as online memorials, social media, or community bulletin boards. Many funeral homes also offer complimentary posting on their websites. Additionally, some newspapers may have special rates or options for those who cannot afford the standard fees.

Are photos typically included in obituaries?

Yes, photos are often included in obituaries to give readers a visual representation of the deceased. It's customary to use recent photos but older photographs can also be used, especially if they better reflect the person’s life or how the family remembers them.

How do you respect privacy when writing an obituary?

To respect privacy when writing an obituary, avoid including sensitive information such as the deceased’s home address, birth date, maiden names or other personal information that could be misused. Always get permission from family members before including personal details.

What is an ethical way to handle errors or omissions after an obituary has been published?

If errors or omissions occur, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. Be transparent with family and friends about the mistake, and if the publication is unable to correct the error, consider posting a corrected version on social media or an online memorial site.

Is it necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary?

While it is not necessary to hire a professional to write an obituary, some may find it helpful, especially during a time of grief. Professionals can help articulate the essence of the deceased's life story and ensure that the obituary is well-written and error-free.
