Patricia Anne Lemon - January 19, 1940 - September 07, 2023

Departed: 09/07/2023 (Herndon)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Anne Dickerson Lemon (83) died September 7, 2023 at her nursing home, Heritage Hall, in Leesburg, Virginia.
Patricia was born in Claremore, Oklahoma, on January 19, 1940, to Carrie Barefoot Dickerson and C. Robert Dickerson of Claremore, OK. She attended Claremore High School, and won a National Merit Scholarship to Radcliffe College in Cambridge, MA, having been offered a place at every one of the Seven Sisters Colleges. At Harvard, she met Edward Lemon, and after a year of courtship, they married in 1958 in Claremore and had two children, Signe and Ted. Patricia loved being a mother.
At Harvard/Radcliffe, Patricia worked as a laboratory assistant to Nobel Laureate Dr. Georg von Bekesy in Cambridge, a period in her life she always remembered fondly and proudly. She graduated in 1962, and then worked in academics for many years, especially at Northfield Mt. Hermon School. She earned an M.Ed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1983.
She adored her students, most of whom came from Asia. Many went on to study at prestigious colleges and Universities and do amazing things because of their hard work and Patricia's expert attention to their language skills. They called her Halmeoni, Korean for Grandmother, which she loved.
She lived in Northfield MA and other rural Massachusetts towns, eventually winding up in Warwick, a town Patricia loved and where she made many friends. She served as a Selectboard (Town Council) member in Warwick for almost a decade, retiring after her illness made it impossible for her to travel to meetings. She traveled widely, and loved languages. Special visits to Munich, Naples, Venice, Salzburg and Rome, as well as Seoul, South Korea and Kauai, Hawaii were some of the most important, particularly when she got to see her former students. She always yearned for Warwick and Claremore, her two favorite places on earth.
She moved to Virginia to be near her daughter, living at Herndon Harbor House where she made cherished friends and enjoyed the Town amenities, especially the Farmer's Market, Library and Community Center. She volunteered with Kids R First and helped with political campaigns. She proudly voted in every election.
She is survived by Edward Lemon, her husband of 65 years, of Warwick MA, daughter Signe Friedrichs and husband Paul, of Herndon, VA, son Ted and wife Andrea, of Brattleboro, VT and many nieces and nephews and cousins, including niece, Sandra Patterson (David) daughter of her beloved sister Florence, Melissa Price (Justin) and JJ Dickerson (Erin), children of her beloved brother Jimmy, all of Claremore OK. She is also survived by her beloved bonus daughter, Tina Cobblah, and bonus granddaughter, Tia Tuffour. She is preceded in death by much loved sisters Florence and Mary, and dear brother Jimmy.
She will be buried in Sageeyah, OK, in the family plot. A celebration of her life will be held in Warwick later this year.
Donations in Patricia Dickerson Lemon's name can be made to the Indian Women's Pocohontas Club, of which she was a member her entire life. "Speak kind words and you will hear kind echos"
"We are the Indian Women's Pocahontas Club. We love our nations stories and the histories of our clans. Whether they be sung or spoken, we treasure our tribal legends, the meeting of our group and all our Indian tokens. The pride of our race we will forever cherish, that its history and legends will not perish. For ancient pride of race, this torch we pass to those who come our place to take."
The Pocahontas Club has come a long way since its inception in 1899. Little did those fine Cherokee leaders in one of the oldest communities of the Indian Territory think they were organizing what is perhaps the oldest club of the state. But the ideals of study and service of that small group of intelligent and cultured girls from the Female Seminary have endured.
The neighborly work of the Pocahontas members continues in the club's objectives of Indian welfare and education. Today the club work is done by a group of dedicated women who put little emphasis on the social aspect.
Those first Pocahontas members would be pleased and proud of knowing that their club, organized for fun, is serving and preserving the past for the future. “We are the caretakers of our culture, our heritage and our communities”

Frederick Joseph Owens - February 27, 1963 - September 04, 2023

Departed: 09/04/2023 (Herndon)
Obituary Preview: Frederick Joseph Owens (aka “FredO”, “Old School”) passed on Monday, September 4, 2023, after a 3-year battle with cancer. He was born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on February 27, 1963, to Frank E. and Evelyn C. Owens. Fred graduated from Herndon High School in 1981 before attending St. Francis University in Loretta, PA and earning a Teaching Degree from Shephard University in Shepherdstown, WV. Inspired by a well-earned calling to stand up for those in need, he later earned a Juris Doctor from Ohio Northern University in 1997 and practiced law in Wilmington, NC until 2019. Fred loved to have a good time, but more than anything else he loved for others to have a good time. When he wasn’t cracking the spine of a fresh book or lost among the golf links he loved so well, he was finding a way to bring joy to himself and others. Whether he was cultivating this joy with a night of drinks with friends; watching and talking sports (especially about his beloved Cowboys); or debating politics or the latest news, the tonic effect of his infectious joy was the same. In the words of Mother Teresa, “Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls. A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love... He gives most who gives with joy.”

Salim Yusuf Mansoor - October 02, 1938 - September 03, 2023

Departed: 09/03/2023 (Herndon)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Salim Yusuf Mansoor, a renowned physiatrist, statesman, and former diplomat passed away on September 3, 2023. Salim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who was loved and well respected by all who knew him.
Salim was born on October 2, 1938 to Yusuf Salman Mansoor and Behija Sattam. The second of four sons, Salim grew up with his brothers, Adel, Thamer, and Dhafer in Baghdad, Iraq. He was a Chaldean rite Catholic who went to the American Jesuit School in Baghdad. He graduated from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in 1966. Afterward, Salim immigrated to the United States to complete his medical education at George Washington University. There, he earned his specialty in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and became Director of PHMR at Southern Maryland Hospital. He later practiced privately for 40 years throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C. Salim’s education was interrupted for a few years when he was asked to serve his native country, Iraq, in the diplomatic corps. He was asked to establish the first ties between Iraq and Canada by establishing a consulate in Montreal. He served there for three years as Consul General and recommended that relations between the two countries be expanded to full diplomatic ties. He established the Iraqi Embassy in Ottawa, Canada in 1972 and served as Charge d’affaires. His next assignment was to lead the Iraqi Interest Mission in Washington, D.C. There, he had the pleasure of working toward the normalization of relations with the U.S. During his tenure, he was instrumental in fostering more positive relations between the U.S. and Iraq and was lauded by U.S. officials as “a dynamic and effective diplomat.” President Richard Nixon himself, gave him a pat on the shoulder and said, “I would like to see better relations between our two countries.” Salim replied, “Yes, Iraq would as well, based on mutual respect and understanding.”
In 1975, he left the Iraqi diplomatic service to return to the medical field and his studies. Although he worked for many years as a doctor, Salim continued to yearn for good relations between his two countries. When Iraq invaded Kuwait, Salim was given the “blessings and consent” of President George Herbert Walker Bush to lead a delegation of private citizens, all of whom were Iraqi Americans, to Iraq. While there, Salim and the other members of the group met with Saddam Hussein and obtained the release of 14 American hostages. Salim personally accompanied the freed hostages to Jordan, and he returned to the U.S. to convey the message that Iraq was willing to do what was necessary to avert war. Unfortunately, no further communications were made between the two countries.
Salim’s personal life was no less significant. In 1967, he married the love of his life, Inaam, an educator with Arlington Public Schools, and the couple had three children: Sammid, Ramiz, and Deana. The Mansoor children were raised and educated in Northern Virginia, and as adults, each has honored Salim’s legacy and contributed to society through their careers, churches, and community. Salim was passionate about life and as devoted to his family and friends as he was to his homeland and adopted country. At times, Salim could seem larger than life, but his humility, humor, and genuine warmth made him a friend to everyone he met. He was beloved by his community, and his kindness and magnetic personality were legendary. Whether traveling the world or smoking cigars on the patio, Salim was happiest surrounded by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Inaam, children, Sammid (Darlene) Mansoor, Ramiz (Mary Elizabeth) Mansoor, and Deana (Robert) Glista, brother Thamer Mansoor, and grandchildren, Alexandra, Abigail, Daniel, Madeline, Amelia, Nora, and Daniel. He is also survived by a loving extended family, who will always cherish Salim as its patriarch. We ask in lieu of flowers, honor his love of children and medicine and make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee at https://raise.stjude.org/fundraiser/4918794 Funeral arrangements can be found on the following website: AdamsGreen.com

Mary Sutton Buckert - August 03, 1934 - August 30, 2023

Departed: 08/30/2023 (Herndon)
Obituary Preview: In Memory of Mary Joan “Mary Jo” Sutton Buckert (Aug 3rd, 1934- August 29th, 2023)
With the vocal ability to hold an endless high C that could shake a holy church’s steeple and awaken the parishioners during a midnight mass rendition of O Holy Night, Mary Buckert shared her soprano voice and love of music with others. Understanding that she’d been bestowed with a special gift from the Lord, she cherished her ability and selflessly shared it. Chosen by a nun in 8th grade, who spotted her natural talent, she was told that she had a gift and would train her to be a soloist. Known as Mary Jo back then, her first 8th grade solo was Pontius Angelicus. She continued to sing this hymn during her 89 years for her family, in churches, at weddings and funerals, for fundraisers, and even in numerous piano bars all over New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. No matter where she sang, there was always at least one eye tearing up and many mouths agape in wonder at the strength and clarity of her beautiful voice.
Only two months ago, Mary was still singing and hitting a high C in her home to the delight of her dear dog, Daisy, her loving caregiver Maria, sweet hospice nurses, and her loving daughter, Laurie. The last song she sang was the Ave Maria, one of her favorite songs because of her devotion and love of the Blessed Mother. With music all around her, the people she loved holding her, and her dog Daisy who she adored with all her heart, Mary peacefully and faithfully passed on Tuesday evening, August 29th . She was surrounded by pure love and into pure love she surrendered.
Mary was born on August 3rd, 1934, in Moorestown, NJ to Esther and Patrick Sutton joining her older sisters by 8 and 10 years, Alice Sutton and Bette Juliana. They grew up with a full house of close relatives filled with music, laughter and love. Mary graduated from Moorestown High School in 1951 with honors. She treasured her high school years and, until recently, could still complete the NYT crossword puzzle in record time. Following graduation, Mary attended a technical school and was hired by the President of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Following her dream to work on Capitol Hill, she moved to Washington D.C. to serve as an Administrative Aid to Congressman Clark MacGregor (MI, 3rd District) where she was challenged, grew in her career, and had the time of her life. Known for her wit, professionalism, and beauty, she was both Miss Philadelphia Phillies and Miss Capitol Hill, sweet honors bestowed and recognized during the decade in which she worked.
Mary met her beloved Walter J. Buckert, Jr. on a blind date set up by a colleague on the Hill who was also Walter’s older sister, JoAnn McDermott. They were married for 51 years and enjoyed a wonderful life of faith and love with consistent Friday night dinners out, which they will surely continue together in heaven. They are survived by their loving daughter, Laurie (Buckert) Grayson whom they adored; their devoted son-in-law, Bill Grayson; and their precious granddaughters; Katherine (Katie), Elizabeth (Elizabethy), and Caroline Grayson (Hugs) who grew up every summer with Mary and “Buddy” on the beach in Delaware. Mary was close to all those she held dear, including her nephew, Richard Juliana (Richie Rich) who remained a devoted, loving nephew and friend to her in her final years.
Mary will be remembered for her beautiful soprano voice, sense of humor and loving heart, as well as her passion for Notre Dame football, hosting parties of all kinds, cooking delicious meals to feed an army, needlepoint works of art, a love of fashion and her connection with giraffes, with whom she felt a shared sense of pride by always standing tall and strong throughout life’s trials. She was a beautiful, loving and kind person who will be forever missed and loved but who the Lord has welcomed home with loving arms and a key spot in His heavenly choir. A funeral mass will be held for Mary on Saturday, September 2nd, 11:00 AM, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 46639 Algonkian Parkway, Sterling, VA 20165 managed by the Adams Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Virginia.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Hari Chand Dewan, a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather, and a man of kindness, generosity, and integrity to all who knew him.
In keeping with his peaceful manner, he departed this world on August 30, 2023 in his sleep at the age of 87. He leaves behind his wife, Kusum Lata Dewan; their three children -- Anil Dewan with wife Laurie and children Kavi Jacob and Kiran Vidya Dewan; Bindu Dewan Macchiavello with husband Kirk and children Nicolo Ceasar and Arman Chand Machiavello; and his youngest daughter, Sabina Dewan.
He was a man of firsts -- the first among his brothers to fall in love at first sight and pursue a love marriage that lasted 62 years. The first in his family to travel to the United States. The first to get his PhD from Virginia Tech that led to a 32-year long, illustrious career with the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.
As an agronomist, he advised governments on how to produce food in some of the most poor, conflict stricken, and ecologically harsh conditions. He served tirelessly to bring food and nutrition to those in need. His dedication to public service sowed these seeds in his children.
Yet among his many accomplishments, the un-wavering commitment to building a better life for his family was always the cornerstone of his purpose-driven existence.
From the deserts of Yemen to the beaches of Tanzania; from the mountains of Afghanistan to the islands of Western Samoa; from the jungles of Sierra Leone to the monuments of Rome, he was an open-hearted man, who liberally shared his love of food and adventure; his politics and his poetry; his humour and his laughter with family and friends.
Throughout his journey, he found found peace and inspiration in his Hindu and Nirankari faiths.
His legacy lives on in all of us. He will always be deeply loved and greatly missed.
The family invites friends and well-wishers to join them in a celebration of Dr. Hari C. Dewan’s life at a memorial service to be held on Tuesday, September 5th at 2023 at Adams-Green Funeral Home & Crematory [721 Elden St; Herndon, VA 20170 (703) 437-1764]. How do you submit an obituary to a newspaper?

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, date and place of birth, date and place of death, a brief overview of their life, information about the immediate surviving family, funeral or memorial service details, and sometimes a photo.

Can an obituary be published online?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Are there any cultural considerations when writing an obituary?

Should family disputes be mentioned in an obituary?

Family disputes are generally not mentioned in obituaries, as the goal is to honor the deceased and notify the community rather than focus on internal family matters. It is considered courteous and respectful to keep such details private.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper varies widely depending on the publication's pricing structure, the length of the obituary, and any additional features like photographs. It can range from a small fee to several hundred dollars.
