Carolyn Faye Ferris - November 14, 1944 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Charleston)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn Faye Decker Ferris, age 79, of Greenup, IL, went to her heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center surrounded by her friends and family. Carolyn, or Mamaw to most, loved her Lord and Savior.  She was born in Springfield, TN on November 14, 1944, to Paul C. and Mossie L. (Osburn) Decker, who she had the greatest respect and admiration for.
She is survived by her loving husband, Darrell; son, Darrell Glenn Ferris, Jr.; daughter, Shannon (Brion) Storm; daughter, Melissa (Jay) Maxey; son, James (Kaylee) Ferris; 9 grandchildren,  Dara Storm, Garrett Storm, Cassie (Austin) Bickel, Jaylynn (Sebastian) Schober, Dakota (Nichole) Ferris, Macey Maxey, Jarin Maxey, Mason Ferris, and Makenlynn Ferris; 2 great-grandchildren, Owen Bickel and Adalee Maxey; brothers, Paul (Anne) Decker and Jeff (Angie) Decker; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two aunts, paternal aunt, Dora Sherrick of Sebring, FL, and her maternal aunt, Melba Rainwater, of Adams, TN, who held a very special place in her heart. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, and sister-in-law.
Carolyn loved the ocean and the numerous trips to Tennessee to see loved ones as a child. Carolyn graduated Class of 1962 at Charleston High School. She went on to be an accounting clerk for the City of Charleston. Throughout the years, she had many jobs in her community, but her greatest joy was raising her children and tending to her grandchildren.
Carolyn met the love of her life, Darrell, in 1956 at the Charleston Pool. Pool time turned to road time as they took rides on his metallic blue Harley Davidson and got pizza at Uncle Cal Williams. Excited to start their new lives together; the two were married on December 6, 1964, at Jack Oak by Reverend Fred Carlen.
Carolyn and Darrell couldn’t wait to start a family of their own, and their children meant the world to them. First was Glenn, born in 1965, then Shannon in 1967, followed by Melissa in 1971, and their last, James, was born in 1981.
Though she loved cooking, rocking on the porch, and petting her kitties, Carolyn’s favorite role was that of a grandparent. She was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She treasured time with her grandkids and loved being their Mamaw, never failing to offer a glass of tea and swing on the porch. When the grandkids were young, she would provide jars and milk jugs for each of them to catch lightning bugs during the hot summer nights.
Carolyn had a soft spot for her furry friends, treating each one like the valuable family member they were. She had many indoor puppies-Abby, Charlie, and Lollipop. Each of them was faithful companions not far from her chair.
Carolyn and Darrell’s friends were practically inseparable throughout their lives. Ray and DeeDee Winnett were with the family when she passed. DeeDee told stories of the campfires Ray cooked meat over, and Carolyn loved each time he did. They were together through it all.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2024, at Adams Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ray Finney officiating. Burial will follow at Jack Oak Cemetery in Greenup, IL. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the service on Monday at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL. An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, typically published in newspapers and online platforms. It includes a brief account of their life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and may include a message of remembrance or a celebration of life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is often a more detailed account of a person's life and death, often including family details, accomplishments, and a personalized message. A death notice, on the other hand, is a shorter, more factual announcement of a person's passing, usually including just the name, dates of birth and death, and details about the funeral services.

Who usually writes an obituary?

An obituary can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes by the deceased prior to their passing. In some cases, newspaper staff or funeral home professionals may assist in composing or editing the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online service?

Obituaries can be submitted to newspapers and online services via their websites, email, or even over the phone. Each publication has its own guidelines and fee structures for obituary submissions, so it's important to inquire directly with the chosen platform.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

While there is no one-size-fits-all formula, most obituaries follow a similar pattern. This includes stating the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief summary of their life, family members, details about the services, and sometimes a special message or poem.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow for a photograph of the deceased to be included alongside the obituary. Check with the particular publication for their specifications regarding size and quality of the photo.

What kind of information should I include in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, the date and place of birth, date and cause of death (if desired), a brief summary of their life's achievements, details about surviving family, as well as the time and location for any services.

How do I honor my loved one's personality in their obituary?

To honor your loved one's personality, consider including anecdotes, favorite quotes, or examples of how they positively impacted others. This personal touch can offer a glimpse into their character and what made them unique.

What should I do if I need to write an obituary but find it too difficult?

If you find the task too difficult, it may be helpful to enlist the assistance of other family members or friends who knew the loved one well. Some people also choose to hire professional writers or utilize resources provided by funeral homes.

Is there a word limit for obituaries?

Yes, most newspapers and online platforms have a word limit for obituaries, which can also affect the cost of publishing them. It's essential to inquire about word limits and pricing before composing the obituary.

How quickly after a death should an obituary be published?

While there is no set rule, obituaries are typically published within a week after the death, to give time for family and friends to be informed about the funeral or memorial services.

Can I post an obituary for free?

Some platforms may allow you to post an obituary for free, however, most newspapers and websites charge a fee. Community bulletin boards, social media, and certain nonprofit websites may be free alternatives.

What if there's an error in an obituary after it's been published?

If an error is found after publication, contact the publication immediately to see if a correction can be issued. Some publications may charge for a corrected reprint, while others may correct minor errors free of charge.

Can I update an obituary after it has been published?

Depending on the publication's policies, it may be possible to update an obituary. This usually needs to be done within a certain time frame and may incur additional costs.

Are obituaries reviewed or edited by the publication?

Yes, most publications will review and potentially edit obituaries to ensure they meet the publication's guidelines and standards. Some may also check for potentially insensitive or inappropriate content.

Can I write an obituary for a pet?

Yes, some publications and online platforms cater to pet obituaries. It's a way for owners to celebrate their pet's life and share their loss with others who understand the significance of pets as family members.

How can I make an obituary more meaningful?

To make an obituary more meaningful, share specific stories or memories, mention the values and causes important to the deceased, and reflect the tone and personality of their life lived.

Should I mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and not required. It may be included if the family feels it is appropriate or wishes to bring awareness to a certain condition or cause.

How much does it usually cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the length, the publication, and the geographic location. It could range from a nominal fee to several hundred dollars. It's advisable to check the rates with the chosen publication beforehand.

Are online obituaries secure?

Reputable publications and online memorial sites employ security measures to protect the obituaries and condolence messages. However, as with any online content, there is some inherent risk of inappropriate comments or misuse, so choose a platform that moderates content appropriately.

How can friends and family contribute to writing an obituary?
