Daniel Allen Anderson - October 07, 1942 - March 29, 2024

Departed: 03/29/2024 (Toccoa)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Daniel “Danny” Allen Anderson (81) beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family on March 29, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens, GA, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering devotion.
Son to Charles “Al” and Alfreda Anderson, Daniel was born on October 7, 1942, and spent most of his life in Western NY. He was a proud United Auto Workers Union member serving 41 years with General Motors working his way from Foundry Worker to Water Treatment Operator where he ensured water was pure and clean.
He was a provider in every sense of the word, exemplifying the value of hard work, perseverance, and self-confidence. He lived an honest life of simple pleasures creating masterpieces not with a brush or clay, but a tapestry of a fresh-cut lawn, pruned trees, happy dogs, and a loving family. Using honor and duty as his artistry, he carved precious moments teaching his children how to swim, fix a car, and face adversity head-on; raising them to be fiercely independent, and to always do what is right.
In late February, Danny faced a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer and began a journey fraught with difficulty. His family formed an army and together they fought with a mission to make the most of the precious time remaining and ensure that these moments were surrounded with the comfort and support he provided to them and others throughout his life. As Stuart Scott stated, “…You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and the manner in which you live” Danny beat cancer by living with honor, choosing to be the pillar of strength for his family, and fearlessly living his life the best way he knew how.
Daniel is preceded in death by his parents Alfreda and Charles Anderson, and his brother, Charles Anderson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Molly Louise Dibble Anderson; children, Kevin Anderson (Natalie), Kristen Andrews, and Andreia Anderson; his siblings, Donna Anderson, Richard Anderson, Mary Ann Benders, Gloria Lekki, Emma Zalewski; grandchildren, Dolores (Anderson) Brock (Matthew), Faith (Anderson) Kappler (Mitchell), and Kylie Andrews; and 6 great-grandchildren, Selah, Willow, Justice and Daniel Kappler and Isabella and Addalynn Brock.
Daniel will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.

Ottice B. Patterson, Jr. - March 25, 1927 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Toccoa)
Obituary Preview: Ottice B. Patterson, a kind, gentle man of God left his earthly home and entered the gates of heaven on Monday March 18, 2024. Within a week he would have turned 97 years of age.
OB or “Mr. Pat” as many in our community called him was born March 25, 1927. He was the third child of Ottice Bascom Patterson and Wilma Lucille Tolbert. He was born in Hall County, Georgia and spent much of his early childhood in Gainesville. His fondest memories of that time include playing “kick the can” in the street in front of his home with all the neighborhood kids, and walking to school with his older brother and sister. Because of the depression and lack of work during those early years his family was forced to leave Gainesville and move back to the family farm in Maysville, Ga. This turned out to be a blessing however because the family moved only two weeks before the tornado of 1936 completely destroyed their home. While living on his granddad’s farm, at the age of 10, his father died. These were difficult depression years but because of the family commitment and hard work of his older 15 year old brother Rhuel who found a job at LeTourneau the family moved to a better life in Toccoa. Because of this OB always admired his older brother.
OB settled into life in Toccoa and with the help of a bicycle and a Doyle street paper route he helped to make money for the family. He graduated from Toccoa High School in 1944 and at the age of 17, with the permission of his Mom, he joined the Navy. Toward the end of WWII he served in the Philippines for 2 years. He always had many stories to tell about his time there.
After the war, he returned to Toccoa and met the love of his life, Annie Ruth Weaver. They fell in love and married in 1951. They have been sweethearts for over 74 years. Settling into their home on Poplar Street they raised three children Brett, Rex and Patti. Growing up on Poplar Street and going to First Baptist Church, this happy family found the love that so many dream of.
As life long members of First Baptist, OB served in many roles: Sunday School and Training union teacher and directors and countless committees along with deacon and chairman of deacons. He was especially proud of helping to make the new church on the hill a reality in 1965. He and his wife Ann enjoyed visiting the elderly and sick and helping to lift up and encourage many people over the years.
In 1961 he began his work as a boy scout volunteer leader. During the 40 wonderful years he served over 60 boys became Eagle Scouts. His distinguished part in their ceremonies was to “call in the colors”, the American Flag. He always felt that it was a boys program and the leaders should be in the background. At the age of 91 and still active as a leader he received the highest award the Northeast Ga council can give a volunteer, the prestigious Silver Beaver.
Following active duty in 1947, OB joined the Army Reserves and spent 39 more years in a fulltime career with the National Guard stationed here in Toccoa. Over the years he was promoted many times up to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was so admired by his fellow soldiers and National Guardsmen statewide that in 1989 the Toccoa National Guard Armory was renamed the OB Patterson Armory commemorating his lifelong service.
OB is preceded by his parents, his beloved older sister Dorothy Patterson Defoor (Lamar) of Toccoa and older brother Rhuel Patterson (Dot) of Gainesville.
He is survived by his treasured wife Annie Ruth Weaver Patterson and his precious little sister Kathryn Patterson Steele (Thomas) both of Toccoa. He is also survived by his son Brett Patterson (Ginger) of Macon, Georgia, his son Dr. Rex Patterson (Sheila) of Toccoa and his daughter Patti Patterson of Roswell, Ga; grandchildren Dr. Chip Patterson (Eleanor) of Athens, Ga, Kirby Patterson of Tallulah Falls, GA and Dr. Meg Patterson Ferdos (Mark) of Demorest, GA; seven very special great granddaughters, Avie Patterson, Ember Patterson, Leland Patterson, Peyton Patterson, Louvie Ferdos, Hazel Ferdos, and Georgie Ferdos; many loving nieces and nephews and treasured friends survive.
A service in celebration of the life of OB Patterson will be held Sunday March 24, 2024 at 3 pm at the First Baptist Church of Toccoa with The Reverend Brett Sanders officiating. Pallbearers will be Kirby Patterson, Chip Patterson, Mark Ferdos, Roger Patterson, Bill Defoor and Mark Steele. Honorary pallbearers will be current and former Boy Scout Leaders of Troup 217 and should meet at the church by 2:30 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice, commonly published in a newspaper or online, that reports the death of a person and provides a brief account of their life, family, and any funeral or memorial services. It serves as both a public announcement and a celebration of the deceased's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes by the staff at a newspaper. Funeral homes may also assist in drafting an obituary on behalf of the family.

What is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth, date of death, and a summary of their life's milestones. It also often contains information about the surviving family members, details about the funeral or memorial service, and may include special messages or thank you notes from the family.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is a simpler announcement of someone's death and service details, often placed by the family directly and sometimes paid for by the word or line. An obituary is more detailed and usually includes a more comprehensive life story, achievements, and personal messages.

Where are obituaries commonly published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local and national newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated online obituary platforms.

How long does it take to publish an obituary?

The time to publish an obituary can vary. Newspapers may have specific deadlines for submissions, while online posts can be published more quickly. It generally depends on the chosen platform and the family's readiness to provide the obituary text.

How long should an obituary be?

There is no set length for an obituary, but they typically range from a few short paragraphs to several hundred words. The length may be influenced by publishing costs, the complexity of the deceased's life, and the amount of information the family wishes to include.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost can vary widely depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Newspaper charges are often based on length and may include additional fees for photos or extra features, while online postings can range from free to a nominal fee.

Can I include a photo in an obituary?

Yes, most publications and online platforms allow you to include a photo. There might be an additional fee for this in printed newspapers.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

While it is a common practice, it is not legally necessary to publish an obituary. It is ultimately a personal choice for the family based on their customs, wishes, and needs.

What if some family members don't want to be mentioned?

It is important to respect the wishes of any family member who prefers not to be mentioned. Family dynamics vary, and the obituary should be a source of comfort, not tension.

How does one handle mentioning survivors in complex family situations?

In complex family situations, it can be appropriate to use general terms like "loving family" or to list survivors without specifying relationships. Sensitivity and inclusivity are key in such cases.

Should an obituary mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is optional and at the discretion of the family. It can be included for clarity or omitted for privacy reasons.

Can an obituary serve as a record for genealogical research?

Yes, obituaries are valuable resources for genealogical research as they provide familial links and biographical information that can be difficult to find in other records.

Are there any privacy concerns associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, including personal information in an obituary, such as exact birth dates or addresses, can raise privacy concerns. It's important to find a balance between honoring the deceased and protecting the living from potential fraud or unwanted attention.

Is it acceptable to include religious or cultural elements in an obituary?

Absolutely. An obituary should reflect the beliefs and traditions of the deceased and their family. It's common to include mention of religious beliefs, cultural customs, or ethnic heritage.

What are some common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Common phrases include "passed away," "surrounded by family," "in loving memory," "cherished," "beloved," and "survived by." These terms help convey respect and affection for the deceased.

Can an obituary include charitable donation requests?

Yes, it's quite common for families to request that memorial donations be made to a particular charity in lieu of flowers. The obituary should include the name of the charity and, if possible, the address or website.

How do you write an obituary for someone with a difficult or controversial past?

Writing an obituary for such an individual requires sensitivity and discretion. It's possible to focus on positive aspects of the person's life or general information about their life journey without delving into controversial or painful details.

Can an obituary be updated or corrected after it has been published?

In print media, once an obituary is published, it usually cannot be changed. However, online obituaries often offer the ability to edit or update the information. Check with the specific publication or website for their policies.

What should one do if they find errors in an online obituary?

If you find errors in an online obituary, you should contact the website's administrator or the person responsible for posting the information to request corrections. Many websites are responsive to making necessary changes in a timely manner.
