Tommy W. Young - August 08, 1971 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Abernathy)
Obituary Preview: Memorial Services for Thomas Wayne "Tommy" Young, 52 of Plainview, Tx, will be held 10:00 am Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Southcrest Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Swarb and Dr. Jerry Newman officiating. Cremation and Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop.
Thomas Wayne “Tommy” Young entered into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, March 17, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. He was born August 8, 1971, in Lubbock, Texas, and attended schools there, graduating from Coronado High School in 1989.
He began attending Southcrest Baptist Church as a fourth-grader, thanks to the bus ministry run by Wilburn Coffman. There, he was taken in by many families who loved and nurtured him to adulthood and led him to the Lord. He served with the children’s ministry and was an active member of the youth group and then the college and singles ministry.
In 1997, he met Teresa Cox in the Southcrest singles group and the two married August 29, 1998. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with a trip to Washington, D.C., in August 2023.
Tommy attended his beloved Texas Tech University, earning his bachelor’s degree in telecommunications in 2000. He worked in radio for many years, doing both color commentary and statistics for his good friend and mentor Steve Dale. When Tommy and Teresa moved to Plainview in August 2000, he became a solo act, doing play-by-play for smaller schools around Plainview, with Teresa learning statistics so she could tag along.
Besides his jobs in the local newspaper and radio stations for several years, Tommy was a volunteer college minister at First Baptist Church in Halfway then at College Heights Baptist Church. He loved pouring into college students and sharing his “Tommy Standard Version” of the Bible and how it applied to life. He considered those students “his kids,” relishing time spent with them in the Young home. He also loved being able to share a spare room with students in need over the years, much as had been done for him by the Bloodworth family years earlier. Now that many are married and have kids of their own, he loved being “Poppy T” to the younger generation.
Tommy loved sports of all kinds and never passed up the chance to take in a Texas Tech or Wayland game. He loved the Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers, and he and Teresa visited many major league ballparks during their marriage. He was a fountain of sports trivia and loved discussing that and “old school” wrestling with friends and strangers. Above all, Tommy loved Jesus and leaned on Him heavily in the last four years when his health declined significantly. His favorite verse was Joshua 1:8-9: “Do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth but meditate on it day and night, being careful to observe all that is in it. Have I not commanded
you, be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” He lived that out and loved with his whole heart. His is now whole and healed and with the Savior he served.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Young and Carroll Holmes; his mother-in-law, Barbara Cox; and his grandparents, Wanda and Jackson Farmer. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Young, of Plainview; his beloved puppy kids; his father-in-law, Wes Cox of Lubbock; his sisters, Jana Ostrander and Misty
Blair; his brother, Aaron Holmes; sister-in-law Michelle Matson (Todd) of Burleson; nieces and nephews Melissa Stamps, Kristin Scates, Conner Ostrander, Cordell Ostrander, Duncan Ostrander, Michael Rodriguez, Kali Rodriguez, Zachary Rodriguez, Anna Welch, Mikala Holmes, Matthew Holmes, Logan Holmes, Lillie Matson and Levi Matson; great-nieces and nephew Karli, Aspin and Knox; and many extended family and special friends. Honorary pallbearers include David Bloodworth, Troy
Burke, Charly McDermett, Carlos Platero, Mark Stelter and Jason Swofford.
Family suggest memorials be sent to the J. Wayland Edwards Endowed Scholarship at Wayland Baptist University or to the Texas Tech University School of Mass Communications located in the tab to the left.

Terry Simmons and Hospice Chaplain Chris Craig officiating. Burial will follow at the Center Plains Cemetery, Cotton Center, TX. Viewing will be held from 12:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop, Abernathy, TX.
Wanda Mae (Barrett) Horsford was born November 17, 1932, to John Wesley and Fanny Elizabeth (McCalip) Barrett in Earth, Texas. In her childhood, the family moved to Cotton Center, where she went to school, met and married her husband, raised her family, and made her life.
In high school, Wanda was an all-state basketball player for the Cotton Center Elks, an early girls’ team that won state and international accolades. She graduated from Cotton Center High School in 1950, the same year she met Edgar Horsford, who she married on August 26, 1951. They were married for over sixty years, had four sons, six grandsons, and thirteen great grandchildren. To their great credit, many of their kids’ and grandkids’ friends happily claimed “Granny and Grumps” as their own, too. The feeling was mutual.
Wanda attended Draughn’s Business College and worked several jobs, including Allen and Beach Butane, and the Co-Op Gins in both Abernathy and Cotton Center. She was a long time and well-loved member of the First Baptist Church of Cotton Center, where she served the Lord and her fellow members in many ways. Service was natural to Wanda, and she used her gifts advocating for agriculture as a member and officer of Women Involved in Farm Economics (W.I.F.E.) for several years.
Despite her busyness, she always made time for family. She never missed a holiday, a meal, or a sporting event where her kids or grandkids were involved. You could always find her cheering their team – and jeering the referees, who often knew her by name before long. She always anticipated the family vacations to the mountains in Colorado where she could revel in God’s creation and cherish time with family.
Wanda went to be with her Lord on January 24, 2024, after a short illness. All of those who spent time with her in her final hours talked about how happy, joyful, and at peace she was.
Wanda is preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Horsford on July 8, 2020; son, Gregory Lane Horsford on October 17, 1962, daughter-in-law, Melinda (Huffaker) Horsford on August 14, 2021, four brothers, and six sisters.

Obituary Preview: Memorial services for Charles Keith Ellis, 80, of Abernathy, TX, will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, January 19, 2024, at the Abernathy First Baptist Church, with Rev. Damon Pearce and Rev. Joel Perez officiating. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX.
Keith died in his home on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
Charles Keith Ellis was born August 7, 1943, to Charlie Ellis and Sybil (Rogers) Ellis in Lamesa, TX. Being the son of a ginner, his family lived in several West Texas farming communities before settling in Abernathy. While attending school in Abernathy, Keith met the love of his life, Susie Deering. They married in June of 1965, and during their 57 years together, they raised three children.
Keith served as the assistant manager for many years at Consumers Fuel in Abernathy and was also a master propane mechanic. When Consumers Fuel sold, he worked several years for Acuff Propane in Acuff, TX, as the manager of operations. He then transitioned out of the propane business and opened S&K Tire Company in Abernathy, where he sold tires and serviced vehicles. Keith owned S&K Tire Company for over a decade before selling his pride and joy to enter retirement. After a short time though, Keith decided he wasn’t quite ready for retirement and took a part-time job at University Medical Center as a greeter. He enjoyed working there because he loved to connect with people of all ages—both young and old. For many years, he offered a shoulder to lean on, providing words of encouragement to the patients, faculty and students at UMC. As an example of his love and compassion, he personally provided “Beanie Babies” to the many young children being treated for cancer and various other illnesses. His genuine kindness did not go unnoticed, as he was once named UMC Employee of the Year. Keith always spoke very highly of the great relationships and lifelong friends he made while working at UMC.
Keith’s passion was loving people. Whether it was dressing up as Santa for the Texas Tech Lady Raider Basketball Christmas Party or meeting and greeting people at UMC, Keith lived his life for others. He was a dedicated husband, a great dad to his children, a fun-loving “Poppy” to his grandchildren and a wonderful friend to everyone that was fortunate enough to cross his path.
Keith leaves behind his daughter Kathie Richards of Austin, TX, and two sons—Kevin Ellis and wife Jennifer of Amarillo, TX, and Kory Ellis and wife Veronica of Cedar Park, TX. Keith had eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and his sweet but mischievous dog Bella. Keith was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Ellis.
The family would like to thank Joel and Martha Perez and Jason and Sheena Adams. We couldn’t have asked for better neighbors. We appreciate your love for Keith and your attempt to keep him in line over the years. The family suggests donations be made in Keith’s name to the
West Texas Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association, 110 Mesa Park Dr. #250, El Paso, TX 79912.

Mrs. Lust died Sunday, December 10, 2023 in Lubbock.
She was born on November 5, 1936 in Clovis, NM to Frank and Lavonne (Mecham) Hinkson. Her childhood was spent on the family farm in Lazbuddie. While attending high school, Barbara worked as a correspondent for The State Line Tribune, graduating from Lazbuddie High School in 1954. Barbara then graduated Texas Tech, with her BS in Home Economics Education. After graduating in 1958, she took a job teaching Home Economics at Farwell High School in Farwell, TX. While at Tech, she met and fell in love with Glenn Lust from Dimmitt, TX. They were engaged in 1956, just before Glenn was drafted by the United States Army and sent to Germany. Their romance continued the next two years via letters. On December 20, 1958, a short two weeks after Glenn's return home, they were married in Lazbuddie Methodist Church in a beautiful Christmas wedding that was the beginning of their wonderful 65 years together. When the school year was over, the couple moved to Dimmitt and farmed with Glenn's family. In July of 1960, their daughter Judy was born and Barbara began staying home to raise her family. Later that year, the family moved to Lazbuddie to farm and ranch with Barbara's parents. Over the next 10 years, sons David, Mark, and Tim were added to the family. Once her children were grown, she returned to the classroom in 1987 at Lazbuddie, helping shape the lives of her students. She was a pro at running concession stands and organizing many school events. Barbara retired from teaching in 1999. She was a constant supporter of Glenn, their children, and grandchildren in everything they did, attending ballgames, track meets, stock shows, school activities, and anything else they were involved in. She helped Glenn around the farm, and taught and led many community activities. In 2005, they moved to Abernathy and she immediately embraced the community. Her greatest joy continued to be serving Jesus, through her church, the Emmaus community and her grief ministry. She was a member of Aldersgate Church in Lubbock and very involved in their Grief Ministry and other leadership roles, serving in anyway she was able. In 2006 a long time passion of hers was realized when she started working at Abell Flower Shop, retiring in 2017. In June of 2021, she and Glenn moved to Lubbock living at Wilshire Place. Barbara continued her servant heart when she began a Bible Study and taught the crafts class there at Wilshire.
The Lust family expresses their gratitude for all those that helped take care of Glenn and Barbara over the last few years. Special thanks also to U.S. Renal North, Wilshire Place, Covenant Pallative Care, and the many others that visited, transported and loved on them like family.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn, children Judy Cooper (Jim) of Matador, TX, David Lust (Angela) of Amarillo, TX, Mark Lust (Amy) of Omaha, NE, and Tim Lust (Lea Ann) of Abernathy, grandchildren, Clint Cooper of Fairbanks, AK, Cody Cooper of Matador, Clay Cooper of Big Timber, MT, Ty Lust (Brooke) of Midland, TX, Dru Lust (Taylor) of Shallowater, TX, and Blythe Lust of Minneapolis, MN, step-grandsons, Alex White of Omaha, NE and Anthony White (Heidy) of St. Louis, MO, 4 great grandchildren, Gryder, Benaiah, Nathan and Lydia Lust. Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often including a brief summary of their life, achievements, the names of surviving family members, funeral or memorial service information, and sometimes a request for charitable donations in their memory. They are commonly published in newspapers and online.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes by the deceased ahead of time. In many cases, funeral homes offer obituary writing services as part of their packages, with the input and final approval of the family.

How is an obituary different from a eulogy?

An obituary is a factual, often public and concise announcement of death that typically focuses on the life and milestones of the deceased. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a tribute or speech given at a funeral or memorial service that is more personal and reflects the speaker's memories and feelings about the deceased.

How detailed should an obituary be?

An obituary should be detailed enough to provide a clear and respectful picture of the deceased's life without overwhelming the reader with information. The length and detail can vary, but it commonly includes name, age, place of death, a brief overview of life, family members, and service details.

What are the essential elements to include in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, date, and place of death; a list of surviving and predeceased family members; important personal and professional milestones; funeral or memorial service details; and information on any preferred charity for memorial donations.

Is it necessary to list the cause of death in an obituary?

No, it is not necessary to list the cause of death in an obituary if the family prefers to keep it private. The decision is a personal one and should be respected by all who contribute to the writing and publication of the obituary.

Can we include a photo in the obituary?

Yes, a photo can be included in an obituary. A recent, clear picture of the deceased is commonly used, but some families choose a photo from earlier in their loved one's life. The choice of photo can help convey the essence of who they were.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published as soon as practical after the death, often within a few days. This allows enough time for friends and extended family to make arrangements to attend any services. The timing can also be influenced by publication deadlines if the obituary is going to appear in a print newspaper.

Should we mention the deceased's age?

Yes, it is customary to mention the age of the deceased in an obituary as it provides a quick reference for readers to understand the stage of life the person was in. However, this can be omitted if the family prefers.

What if we don't want to hold a public funeral or service?

If the family decides not to hold a public funeral or service, this choice should be respected and can be reflected in the obituary. Instead, the obituary can simply state that the family will be holding a private service or that a memorial will be held at a later date.

Can we include details about the deceased's personality or interests?

Absolutely. Sharing details about the person's personality, passions, hobbies, or interests can provide a deeper understanding of who they were and helps to personalize the obituary. It also helps readers connect with the deceased on a more personal level.

What should we do if the deceased did not want an obituary?

If the deceased explicitly did not want an obituary, their wishes should be honored. Familial discretion is key in such situations, and alternative methods of informing friends and family, such as personal communications or online postings, can be used.

Are there different styles or formats for obituaries?

Yes, there are several styles and formats for obituaries, ranging from the traditional listing of life milestones and survivors to more personalized and creative narratives that capture the spirit of the deceased. The style chosen can reflect the personality and wishes of the deceased or their family.

How can we handle disagreements about the obituary content?

Disagreements about the obituary content should be handled with sensitivity and respect for the deceased and their closest family members. Open communication and compromise are key. In some cases, a neutral third party like a funeral director might assist in mediating the content.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary—it can be as short or long as necessary to convey the relevant information and tone. However, keep in mind that print newspapers may charge by the line or word, so length can have cost implications.

How do you conclude an obituary?

An obituary is commonly concluded with details of the funeral or memorial service, any reception to follow, and information regarding flowers, donations, or other specific wishes of the family or deceased. It might also include a final thought or sentiment representing the family's love and remembrance.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary significantly based on factors like the publication's pricing structure, the obituary's length, and whether a photo is included. Costs can range from a small fee to several hundred dollars. Online obituaries on platforms or social media may be free or have a fixed price.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

Yes, if an obituary contains errors or if the family wishes to add information, most publications will allow updates or corrections. There may be additional costs or deadline restrictions, especially for print publications, so it's best to discuss this with the publication as soon as an issue is identified.

How should we select the publications for the obituary?

The selection of publications for the obituary should take into account where the deceased and their family had strong connections, such as their hometown or cities where they lived. Additionally, consider the reach of the publication to ensure all who might wish to be informed are covered.

What do we do if we can't afford an obituary publication fee?

If the publication fee for an obituary is a concern, explore alternatives such as free community papers, church bulletins, and online platforms, which can offer more affordable or even free options. Some newspapers also offer discounted rates or special considerations in cases of financial hardship.

Can we ask for donations instead of flowers?

Yes, it is common for families to request donations to a charity in lieu of flowers. This can be specified in the obituary with details of the charity and how to make a donation. This approach honors the deceased by supporting causes important to them.
