Reverend Daniel Clay Dillon - January 22, 1948 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Zionsville)
Obituary Preview: An Extraordinary Life
Reverend Daniel Clay Dillon transferred to heaven, quietly in his sleep, on Easter Sunday, April 17th, 2022. He was born in Dayton, Ohio on January 22, 1948 to Robert Clay Dillon and Lorna Joan Dillon (b. Snell). Dan grew up loving school, learning, and outdoor adventures including archery. He greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing with his Dad. Though challenged with cerebral palsy, he led a life of scholarship, physical independence, and productivity that few unchallenged individuals can surpass.
Dan was a deep thinker, interested in a wide range of subjects from mathematics to foreign language to theology. Graduating valedictorian from North Miami High School, Dan entered Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis) as a math major. Quickly bored with mandatory freshman coursework previously mastered, he switched his major to German and developed a high proficiency. Dan focused on English literature during his senior year and won campus acclaim for a short story capturing the pain disabled persons feel when the average individual treats them as damaged and incapable beings. Ever the humorist, Dan anonymously wrote a hilarious satirical column entitled “Dear Dooley” for the school newspaper which had school administrators furiously trying to identify the author for suspension.
Dan was always a strong advocate for the disadvantaged. After college he worked for Indiana Rehabilitation Services as a Disability Determination Adjudicator, helping individuals qualify for benefits.  Later Dan worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Indiana Department of Vocational Rehabilitation assisting individuals with blindness or low vision enter the workforce.  If you were a blind person in Indiana looking for employment, Dan was your man! When he started, he asked his supervisor to give him the most challenging cases. As Dan explained it “If I fail, well…so has everyone else.  If I succeed, it will only build my reputation.” His reputation grew. During this time the most significant development of his life occurred. He met a co-worker who became the love of his life, Lenore Allen. He “eventually qualified for the job,” as he would say, and they were wed on July 1, 1978. Dan neared burnout from the emotional drain of the vocational rehabilitation service and decided to change careers. In true Dan style he became the first stand-up comic who had to sit down for the entire act. He once said, “If a friend told me to break a leg as I entered the stage, I would turn and say, ‘no one will notice’.” Dan worked his way up from opener to middle act, and in 1985 won Showtime’s Funniest Person in Indiana.  Often performing in dinner theaters, his stated goal was to “make them laugh so hard they blow mashed potatoes out their noses.” In 1995 he was offered a comedy headliner act and turned it down. God had called Dan to the ministry. When asked by a promoter why he was leaving comedy he answered, “Because Jesus wants me too!”
Seven years later he had completed an extensive theological course of study, was ordained as a Nazarene minister, and began his pastoral work. His personal interactions and sermons were notable for ‘real-deal’ honesty and empathetic compassion. It has been said of his sermons “They put a thinking cap on your head and a searchlight on your heart.” His comedian-self wasn’t lost though…spontaneous laughter was frequently heard in church.
Eventually Dan and Lenore were called as missionaries to South Korea to teach at Korea Nazarene University. Lenore, being blind and concerned about Dan’s wheelchair mobility, was nervous about the calling at first, worried Korea might be difficult to physically navigate, not having curb cuts and other construction accommodations for people with disabilities. Dan answered, “We serve Jesus. He was a carpenter! Who knows more about curb cuts than Jesus, the carpenter?” Their mission in Korea was successful. Lenore taught in the Rehabilitation Department and Dan taught English, and they both led Bible studies at the Ya Dom Church.
Dan is survived by his wife Lenore of Indianapolis, IN; his two sisters, Molly Dillon of Uniondale, IN and Marjorie Dillon of Sacramento, CA; his brother, Robert Dillon of Greenville, SC; and many individuals in Christ worldwide who love him as a brother.
Dan joyously shared his life with the love of his life, Lenore, for 43 years. All that know them are amazed and inspired by their life together. He loved and cared deeply for his family and friends. He advocated for the disadvantaged. He was passionate for the lost.  He led church groups to improve neighborhoods, held block parties to bring friends to the lonely, brought pizza to shut-ins because he wanted to share Christ’s love. Sadly, some overlooked the man because of his disability. For those who knew Dan, that was just impossible.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2:00 PM EST at Southport Church of the Nazarene, 920 E. Southport Road, Indianapolis, IN 46277. The service will be streamed live on YouTube at Southport Church of the Nazarene and will be available for viewing later.

Lev "Leo" Ringo - December 20, 1948 - March 11, 2022

Departed: 03/11/2022 (Zionsville)
Obituary Preview: Lev "Leo" Ringo
73 years old, passed away on March 11, 2022 after a long health battle.
Born in Riga, Latvia in 1948, Leo immigrated to the United States in 1980 searching for a better life for his family; plus, his wife said he had to.  After moving, he continued his trade of being a meat cutter.  Leo made it clear there was a difference between a meat cutter and a butcher, and he was definitely the former. He was very meticulous, took great pride in his work, and his work ethic was unmatched and something he taught his daughters by example. At all times, family remained Leo’s first priority, and his grandchildren were the light of his life.  Not a day went by that he didn’t require at least twice-a-day conversations with his children so he could ask about his grandkids. After all, spoiling the grandkids, as well as all dogs (he was always sure to set food aside for his best dog friend and bring special treats to his grand-dogs), was his specialty. Leo was often perceived to be a “lion” on the outside, but really, he was a softie on the inside, particularly when it came to all his girls and his “bootinka.”
Despite his physical ailments, Leo’s mind always remained sharp. He could remember the exact date, often down to the day of the week, of any major event in his family’s life. He loved sports (particularly soccer and hockey), throwing fancy birthday parties, beach vacations with his family, babies, and he likely knew more about U.S. politics than most elected politicians.
At the end of the day, Leo will be remembered most for being a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, and friend. He was the type of guy to keep in touch with family and friends, near and far, and the glue to hold people together. He leaves a big hole, but many great memories.
Leo is survived by his love of 55 years, Maria; two daughters, Anna Ringo (Mark Ullom) and Renay (Adam) Pegg; his three beloved grandchildren, Darren (Bootinka), Camryn (Goosey), and Quinn (Quinny); and his brother, Alex Ringo. He is preceded in death by his parents, Naum Ringo and Khaya Semes Ringo, both of Latvia.
Services will be held graveside at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation Cemetery North, in Westfield, IN at 2pm, Monday, March 14, 2022.

Departed: 03/10/2022 (Zionsville)
Obituary Preview: Michael F McCoy, known to Linda as Mikey, passed away on March 10, 2022. Mike was born in the small town of Milan, Indiana to Mac and Gladys McCoy, who preceded him in death, and then shortly after moved to Madison where he met Linda, his high school sweetheart. She followed him to Indiana University, where he was a member of the Marching hundred.  They were married while Linda was a senior in college and Mike was in his first year of the IU MBA program. They recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.   Mike spent the majority of his career in insurance and equipment leasing and supporting his wife in her career.
Mike was a long time member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, joining in 1969. He and Linda both were regular attendees and volunteers until the time when she joined the staff as an Associate Pastor in 1982. Mike always supported Linda and St. Luke’s in any way he could. He and Erin would often be found in the Fellowship Hall and later the Great Hall setting up the coffee and donuts for the Sunday services. Mike then continued to support Linda by leading the technology team at The Garden which she started in 1995 up to her retirement in 2015.
Mike always said that one of the happiest days of his life was when his daughter, Erin, arrived followed by the birth of his granddaughter, Madeline. He particularly enjoyed traveling around the world especially working with Swiss Timing at many Olympic style events. He also loved to cook. Mike could often be found in the kitchen every Sunday night cooking up something special for his family and friends.
Mike will be remembered for his wonderful smile and infectious laugh. There was rarely a time when he didn’t have a big smile on his face even towards the end when he wasn’t feeling his best. Mike loved people. He could talk to anyone about anything, and he was genuinely interested in what others had to say.
Mike was 77 years old and is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Erin (Lee) Roling; and granddaughter, Madeline Swike. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dave.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of the deceased's life, information about the funeral or memorial service, and may also mention the deceased's significant contributions and survivors.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a formal acknowledgment of an individual's death, helping to notify friends, acquaintances, and the community. They also provide a historical record and are a way to celebrate and honor the life of the deceased, as well as to express grief publicly.

Who usually writes an obituary?

An obituary is often written by a close family member or friend, although some people choose to write their own obituaries in advance. In some cases, a funeral home or an obituary writing service can also craft the notice.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the full name of the deceased, age at the time of death, the city of residence, date of death, a brief overview of life and achievements, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving family members.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is generally a shorter, factual statement of a person's death, often without the biographical details or family information found in an obituary. Death notices are usually paid for by the family and published in newspapers or online.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are published online, either on funeral home websites, online newspaper obituaries sections, or on specialized memorial sites. Online obituaries may allow for greater space, multimedia elements, and interactivity, such as posting condolences.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll need to contact the publication's obituary department for their submission guidelines and rates. Most newspapers accept obituaries from funeral homes or individuals and may have specific requirements regarding wording, length, and deadlines.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary greatly depending on the newspaper's circulation, the length of the obituary, and whether photographs are included. Online obituaries may be less expensive or even free in some cases.

How long should an obituary be?

There is no set length for an obituary, but they commonly range from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Newspaper obituaries may be subject to space limitations and associated costs, whereas online obituaries may offer more flexibility in length.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely at the discretion of the family. Some may choose to mention it for transparency or to support a cause related to the death, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Can I include a photo with an obituary?

Yes, photos are commonly included with obituaries, especially online, and add a personal touch. Newspapers may have specific guidelines on the type and size of the photo.

Are there different types of obituaries?

Yes, traditional obituaries are just one type. There are also brief death notices, and more extensive life tributes or memorials that focus on a person's story, personality, and impact.

What should be done if an error is found in the obituary after publication?

If there is an error in the published obituary, contact the newspaper or website as soon as possible to correct it. Most publications will be understanding and willing to make the necessary changes quickly.

Is there a standard structure to follow when writing an obituary?

While there is no strict format, obituaries typically begin with the announcement of death, followed by biographical details, information about the funeral or memorial service, and a list of surviving relatives. Many people also include a personal message or a favorite quote.

How can I personalize an obituary?

An obituary can be personalized by sharing fond memories, anecdotes, personal achievements, or unique traits of the deceased. Many families also incorporate poetry, quotes, or religious text that reflects the individual's spirit or beliefs.

How do I ensure the obituary is respectful and honors the deceased?

To ensure respect and honor, focus on the positive aspects of the person’s life, use a tone that reflects their personality, and have close family members or friends review the obituary before publication.

Should an obituary include charitable donation information?

If the family prefers charitable donations in lieu of flowers, this information can be included in the obituary along with the name of the charity and how to donate. It's a meaningful way to honor the deceased's legacy.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

While print obituaries cannot be edited once published, online obituaries often allow for edits or updates. It's best to proofread carefully before submitting to minimize the need for changes.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a week after death to ensure timely notification of the services. However, this can depend on the family's wishes and newspaper deadlines.

Can I add condolences or memories to an online obituary?

Most online obituaries and memorial websites offer the option for people to add condolences, personal messages, and memories. This allows friends and family to share in the remembrance from anywhere.

How can I find the obituary of someone who has recently passed away?

Obituaries can typically be found on the websites of local newspapers, at funeral home websites, or through online obituary and memorial databases. You may also contact the deceased's family or the funeral home directly for information.
