Obituary Preview: RAVENA - Gerald T. "Jerry" Van Alstine, 80, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Albany Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
Born on October 6, 1942, to Bertha (nee Rutledge) and Gerald R. Van Alstine, Jerry grew up in Boonville, New York. After graduating from Boonville Central School, where he played trumpet in the band and was a member of the Boy Scouts, he would continue his love of learning, first receiving a bachelor's degree from Siena College and later a master's degree in theology from St. Bernard's Institute in 1998 and a Master of Science from Iona College in 2002. But his proudest moment was graduating with a Master of Arts from Notre Dame College in 2007. From that point on, he was an avid Fighting Irish football fan.
After graduating from Siena College, Jerry began his career as an educator until he retired from Ravena Coeymans Selkirk Central School District, where he had taught social studies, economics, and AP courses. Impassioned by his faith, Jerry was extremely active in his church community as well as Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he provided pastoral care to countless patients, and with the Department of Correctional Services at Greene, Coxsackie, and Hudson correctional facilities. His passion for work in the prison system led to his second career as Catholic Chaplain at Hudson Correctional Facility, where he worked until his passing.
Jerry was proud of his Irish and Dutch heritage. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of REC, and a member of Cursillo; he also belonged to several car clubs, including the Antique Automobile Club of America. He loved driving around the countryside or attending classic car shows in one of his three antique cars with his lovely wife, Susan.
Jerry was a fun-loving soul, a loyal friend, and had a positive attitude toward everything in life. He strived to go above and beyond anything that was asked of him and prided himself on being available to anyone in need, no matter what. Jerry always had a story and a smile to share with those around him. And when he wasn't entertaining guests or enjoying a good meal, he found great joy in experiencing nature by hiking and camping. He was much loved and will be missed dearly.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Bertha Van Alstine, and his brother-in-law James Kessler.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Susan Van Alstine (nee Kessler); his sisters-in-law, Patricia Greenfield (nee Kessler), and Janet Kessler (nee Benn); his niece, Vanessa Greenfield and her husband, Howard Becker; his nephews, Jeffrey Kessler, and Christian Kessler and his wife Mindi Kessler (nee McAllister), and his adored lab, Lily.

Collins, she learned tolerance and perseverance from her brother, Johnny. Her brothers and brother-in-law (Ollie, Bobby, Jim, Butch, and Freddie) inspired her love of the United States of America and respect for our National Flag; her husband, John, encouraged her to stand up for what she believed in (especially open government by the people, of the people, and for the people). Her sister, Margie, was always a great example for Mary in many ways. Mary and John’s son, John Jr., carried on the family tradition of serving our country in the US Air Force, especially during “Desert Shield”. Mary was both humbled and honored when she received an award for unselfish service at her High School graduation. She was commended by the Troop T of the NYS Thruway for her help in nabbing two fugitives from justice. Mary was selected to be the class speaker at her graduation from the NYS School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and in 1990 was selected as “Woman of the Year” for the Albany Division of the NYS Thruway. In 2003, her name was placed on the Honor Roll of the Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs (NYS Federation) in Cooperstown. In 2021, she was honored as “Citizen of the Month” by LaFarge Holcim at the Board of Directors meeting of the Ravena-Coeymans Businessman’s Association. Mary was a member of many local community organizations and always gave 150% of effort to all of them, especially the Fire Police Association of Albany County. Her favorite hobby was sewing “Heirloom Christening Gowns”, made with tender loving care. Mary had everything a woman of her generation could ask for – caring parents, a handsome and loving husband, children she was so proud of, a career (where she not only cracked a couple of glass ceilings, she also broke one), a new home, wonderful grandchildren, a lot of dear friends (especially the Class of ’49 Breakfast Bunch), the staff of MidWay Cafe, Janine’s Floral Creations, Persico’s True Value, and a long life to enjoy it all. Mary is survived by her children, John F. Driscoll Jr. (Kim Ruso-Driscoll), James F. Driscoll (Giovona), and Jeffrey F. Driscoll (Vanessa Lukens); her “fourth son”, Walter Ross (Kathy); her grandchildren, Alexandria, Brianna, Meghan, James, and Jeffrey F., Jr.; special family members, Christian and Ryan Hodson, and Miles Lukens; her loving nephews, Bruce (Elaine) Walcott and their children, Gary (Cheryl) Walcott and their children; her nephews, William (Lauren) Collins and Arthur Collins and their families. Her brother, James Collins (Nancy) also survives, along with their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her husband’s niece, Janice Fuda, and several other nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by her niece, Cindy Fabiano. Mary wishes to express her thanks to Dr. Geri Aitkin, Dr. Barbara Brazis, Dr. James Phillips, Michelle Masone, NYOH and their staff for their care and concern all these years. Mary was a 16 year cancer survivor. Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 3rd from 9 until 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 21 Main Street, Ravena. How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. A short obituary may only include basic information and a few sentences while longer ones can span several paragraphs, detailing the person’s life story and impact. It largely depends on the preferences of the family and the space limitations of the publication.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a more straightforward announcement of a person's passing, often listing the name, age, and date of death, and sometimes the time and place of the funeral service. An obituary is more detailed and personal, often including a biography, family member list, achievements, and special messages.

An obituary is typically published as soon as practical after the death, often within a few days to a week. This allows time for family and friends to be informed of the passing and the details of any services or memorials to be arranged.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

Generally, family members or the executor of the estate will submit the obituary. However, close friends or other associates with the consent of the family may also submit one. Publications have varying policies, so it's best to inquire directly.

How can one ensure the accuracy of an obituary?

Accuracy in an obituary can be assured by thoroughly checking facts, dates, spelling of names, and other personal details with multiple family members or friends before submission. It may also be helpful to have someone unconnected to the writing process proofread the final draft.

Is it necessary to include cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is entirely optional and at the discretion of the family. Some families choose to include this information for transparency or to provide context, while others may prefer to keep it private.

Should an obituary include a photo?

What kind of personal details are appropriate to include in an obituary?

Appropriate personal details in an obituary often include the person’s education, occupation, hobbies, passions, accomplishments, and affiliations with organizations. It is important, however, to avoid including sensitive information that could be misused.

Is it appropriate to mention survivors and predeceased family members?

Can an obituary serve as a request for charitable donations?

Yes, families often use obituaries to request charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This is typically phrased as "In memory of [decedent’s name], donations may be made to [organization]."

How do I handle the inclusion of estranged or divorced family members?

When considering estranged or divorced family members, tact and sensitivity are necessary. Inclusion depends on the family's preferences and the nature of the relationship with the decedent. It is not uncommon for some families to omit mention of estranged members, although others opt for an inclusive approach regardless of relationship status.

Are there cultural considerations to keep in mind when writing an obituary?

Certainly. Cultural norms and traditions may influence how an obituary is written and what information is included or omitted. It is important to be sensitive to and respectful of the deceased's and family’s cultural and religious practices.

What if my loved one lived a difficult or controversial life?

An obituary should be written with dignity and respect, focusing on the positive aspects of a person's life. It is not necessary to air personal challenges or controversies publicly; instead, highlight the person’s contributions, love for others, and the impact they had on those around them.

Is it possible to update an obituary after it has been published?

If an obituary is published online, there may be a possibility for updates or corrections, depending on the website’s policy. For printed obituaries, this is typically not possible, so ensuring accuracy before publication is very important.

Should the tone of an obituary be somber or can it be celebratory?

The tone of an obituary can vary; some families prefer a somber and respectful tone, while others may opt for a more celebratory or light-hearted tone, particularly if it reflects the personality or wishes of the deceased. The most important thing is that the tone is appropriate and honors the individual's life and legacy.

Can an obituary be rejected by a publication?

Yes, a publication may reject an obituary if it does not meet their guidelines, contains inappropriate content, or fails to provide required verification of death. Always check the publication’s submission requirements before submitting an obituary.
