Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online. It usually includes a brief account of their life, significant achievements, and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve to inform the community of a person's passing, celebrate their life, and notify acquaintances about the details of the funeral or memorial services. They also serve as a historical record for future generations.

Who usually writes an obituary?

An obituary is commonly written by a close family member, friend, or sometimes by the funeral home handling the arrangements. In some cases, individuals may write their own obituaries before they pass.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should include the full name of the deceased, their date of birth, date of death, significant life milestones, family members, career achievements, and details about the funeral or memorial services. Additionally, it may include a cause of death if the family wishes to disclose it.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary but is typically short, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. The length may depend on the space available in the publication and the cost involved, as well as the amount of information the family wishes to include.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary in a newspaper. Many choose to do so for traditional reasons and to ensure a broad announcement, but others may opt for online postings or simply informing friends and family directly.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published within a week after the death, but this can vary based on the family's wishes and the timing of funeral services. The key consideration is to allow enough time to inform interested parties about service times and dates.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are published online on various platforms including social media, memorial websites, and the digital versions of local newspapers. Online obituaries allow for a wider reach and often enable readers to leave condolences.

How does one submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you typically need to contact the newspaper's obituary department, provide the written obituary, and pay any associated fees. Some newspapers may also offer assistance in writing the obituary.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers charge a fee to publish an obituary. The cost can vary depending on the length of the obituary and the specific newspaper's rates. Online postings can often be less expensive or even free.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement of an individual's passing and the details of the funeral services. An obituary is longer, includes more narrative about the person's life, and is often written in a more personal tone.

Can an obituary be too personal?

An obituary should respect the privacy and dignity of the deceased and their family. While it can reflect personal details about the deceased's life and character, it is important to avoid disclosing overly personal or sensitive information that the family may not wish to make public.

Is it appropriate to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and is not required. Some families choose to include it to provide closure or raise awareness about certain diseases or conditions, while others may prefer to keep it private.

What kind of photo should accompany an obituary?

A recent, clear photograph of the deceased is commonly used with obituaries. The photo should respectfully represent the individual, and many families choose one that captures the essence of their loved one's personality and life.

How can friends and relatives contribute to an obituary?

Friends and relatives can contribute anecdotes, personal stories, and photographs to help paint a complete picture of the deceased's life. They may also assist with factual details and proofreading before the obituary is submitted for publication.

Can obituaries be updated or corrected after publication?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot be changed. However, online obituaries can sometimes be updated or corrected. It's best to carefully review the obituary prior to submission to avoid the need for corrections.

Should children or pets be mentioned in an obituary?

Children, grandchildren, and close relatives are often mentioned in an obituary as survivors or predeceased family members. Pets, if they were a significant part of the deceased's life, can also be included at the family's discretion.

Is it okay to add humor to an obituary?

If it aligns with the personality of the deceased and is done tastefully, humor can be a fitting tribute within an obituary. However, the tone should remain respectful and considerate of all readers.

How to handle donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary?

Many obituaries include a request for donations to a specified charity instead of flowers. This is typically phrased as, "In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to [charity name]." Be sure to provide clear instructions or a link if the notice is online.

What are common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include misspelling names, incorrect dates, omitting important family members or information, and failing to notify all relatives before publication. Always proofread carefully and have someone else review it.

How do privacy concerns affect the publishing of an obituary?

With identity theft and privacy concerns on the rise, it is important to balance the wish to honor the deceased with the need to protect their privacy. Avoid including overly personal details such as home addresses, birthdates, or mother's maiden names.
