Elvira “Vera” Granados Bernal, 90, of Houston, Texas, peacefully passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024, in her home surrounded by her children, grandchildren and siblings. Elvira was born October 3, 1933, in Houston, Texas to Franscisco Granados and Jesusita Eureste Granados. In 1957 she married Ralph Bernal, 36 years. She is survived by her 5 children, Cynthia (Rick) Moreno, Gilda (Jay) Bartz, Ralph (Lollie) Bernal Jr., Andrew (Nora) Bernal, Larry (Misti) Bernal. Her 14 grandchildren, 13 grandsons; Jerimah Bernal, Joshua (Nathina) Bernal, Michael (Miranda) Bogutzki, Louis Puentes (Yunnue), Andrew Bernal, Tyler (Sarah) Bartz, Aaron (Valerie) Bernal, Zachary Bernal (Skylar), Trevor Bartz (Jacqueline), Seth Bernal (Victoria), Matthew Bernal, Isaiah Bernal and Quinton Bernal and one granddaughter, Claudia Bernal. Her 13 great grandchildren; Israel, Emmanuel, Alexander, Isaac, Ethan, Mallory, Eva, Olivia, Aurora, Lilliana, Elijah, Brian and one on the way. In addition to her immediate family she is survived by her siblings Gloria Vasquez, Raymond (Leticia) Granados, Joe (Gloria) Granados, Carmen Arrambide, Susie Sanchez, Aurora Granados, Margaret Reyes, Victoria (Thomas) Martinez, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Elvira is preceded in death by her husband Ralph Bernal, her parents, Francisco & Susie Granados, sisters, Anita Espinedo, Isabel Granados and brother Frank Granados, Jr.
Elvira was very active in her children’s social activities such as Room Mom, PTO President, Brownie leader, Scout leader, Religious School Teacher, teaching her children to sew, cook, bake, decorate cakes and care for plants and cars. She filled her days with many other hobbies and family events. Elvira returned to school in 1981 to complete her GED and then on to Houston Community College to complete her Nurse Aid Skills certification. She also attended St Thomas University for training in classes on Christian Doctrine, St Dominics to complete a Parent Effectiveness Training certificate and Taylor Vocational school for a certificate in Bookkeeping/Machine. Elvira’s career included being a salesperson for Stanley Home Products and Coventry Jewelry. She went on to be a private duty nurse at St. Anthony Center. She then worked at Lyons Avenue Health Center in the Maternity & Family Planning Staff where she retired after 13 years of service. She was very proud of her career. Elvira was a devout christian and prayer warrior. She never hesitated to pray for anyone whether they asked for prayer or not. Elvira had a very strong love for plants, as evident in her home garden. She never left a store without “peeping” at the plants in the sale section to see which ones she could take home and “bring back to life”. At Lyons she was the center’s first water buddies, watering all the plants inside and outside. At Lyons, she would win prizes for having the best decorated door for every holiday/event. She never missed her right to vote and was very patriotic. She supported all Houston sports in watching the games and wearing her game day attire. She even attended the Houston Astros 2017 World Series parade.
Elvira was a member of the Altar Society at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. She was the flag carrier for the Catholic Daughters of America at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. She was a volunteer in the children’s church at The Oasis, for 7 years. She was an active member of Lindale Assembly of God Church for over 30 years, she helped in the children’s church, was the nurse for the Halloween Trick or Treat festival and a proud member of the Prime Timers group. Elvira never missed a holiday party or function, at which she was always dressed for the occasion.
Our Family is forever indebted to our niece Claudia Bernal, RN who gave her professionalism and tender loving care to her MOST PRECIOUS PATIENT, her grandma. The family would also like to thank Valor Hospice, especially Sybil her CNA, who became her daughter through this time and her nurse Brandi Washburn.

Obituary Preview: Chong Cha Yi Kemp, 75, of Houston Texas, peacefully went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, after illness. She was born in Kangwondo, South Korea on February 15, 1949, to the late Kyong Jo Yi and Hae Young Kim Yi.
The pride and joy of her life was her family. Chong is survived by her children son Joe Kemp and daughter Kathy Kemp. She is also survived by her cherished grandson Daniel Kemp-Williams. She was predeceased by her parents Kyong Jo and Hae Young Yi, brother Hyo Young Yi, sister Chung Soon Yi, and husband Joe L. Kemp. She also leaves behind a host of cherished friends and extended family members.
In her early years after marrying Joe L. Kemp she spent the first few years of her marriage as a hardworking housewife and mother until her two children were of school age. Chong began working after her kids both began grade school, then subsequently retired after 47 years of employment with various employers, in 2012. In retirement she loved filling her time with gardening and working on her lawn which she prided herself in and truly enjoyed, remodeling, crafts, and loving on and spending as much time as possible with her grandson. Chong truly loved giving, encouraging, selflessly caring for, and helping others. She is in our hearts forever and she is truly missed.
A graveside memorial is in the process of being planned at this time with a tentative date in Late July – early August.

Obituary Preview: Robert, or “Bo” to his many friends, was born in Houston, Texas and lived his full 17 years in Seabrook and Houston. Robert finished high school, having attended St. Thomas Episcopal and Bellaire High School. He was a camper at Camp La Junta for nine summers as well as Concordia Japanese Language Camp. He was enrolled at Houston Community College and hoped to attend Savannah College of Art and Design and pursue a career in game design.
Robert was a dreamer, a young man with high hopes, a big imagination, and a gentle way with those around him. He always saw the best in his friends and family, looking for peace and harmony, even when times were tough. A counselor to many of his peers, he was known for good advice and a giving spirit.
Robert’s fire was bright but all too brief. He found courage in stories, immersing himself in adventure and new experiences. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his kindness towards all, and for everything he taught his family and friends about love and acceptance. His passion for music, classic games, and cosplay will long leave an echo in our hearts and minds.
Robert is survived by his parents (Brad and India), his siblings (Adair, Bradley, and Eliza), grandparents (Col. Obituary Preview: Valreta Moodie, affectionately known to many as Valerie, Punkus, Mums, and Vallie P, passed away at the age of 70 on March 15, 2024. She was surrounded by her loving husband and family in Fulshear, Texas, marking the end of a life filled with love, resilience, and warmth.
Born on October 26, 1953, in Lakes Pen, St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Felix and Roslyn Lewis, Valreta’s early years were shaped by her family’s dynamics. Following her parents’ separation, she moved to Clarendon to live with her father, maintaining close bonds with her mother and two younger sisters through visits during school breaks. Valreta’s passion for education and nurturing was evident from a young age, leading her to her first job as a kindergarten teacher.
Life’s complexities brought Valreta back to her mother’s home after her engagement ended, during which time she welcomed her first child, Loris (Lez). Destiny had plans for her, as she later met the love of her life, Peter Moodie, with whom she shared three wonderful children. Their unwavering partnership lasted four decades, up until her passing.
Valreta’s life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to her family, her love for gardening and cooking, and her role as a caregiver for her late brother, Bud. She devoted her life to nurturing those around her, ensuring they were well taken care of and never left hungry.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and caring, survived by her husband, Peter, children, Loris, Tashna, Aundre, and Diedre; her grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Jada, Dimitri, Gabriel,J’Den, Avery, Ainsley, and Saint, and her sisters, Rosie, Thelma, and Audrey. Valreta also leaves behind countless family members and friends, whose lives she touched in unforgettable ways. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Michael Angelo Halpin - November 30, 1954 - March 13, 2024

Obituary Preview: Michael Angelo Halpin, 69, was ushered into heaven on March 13, 2024, in Sugar Land, TX, after a long and difficult battle with Frontotemporal Dementia (BvFTD). A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Michael is best known for his deep love for his family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Grace and John Halpin; father-in-law, Frederick Wurzbacher; and sister-in-law, Diana Halpin. Michael was born November 30, 1954, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He married his highschool sweetheart and the love of his life, Kathleen Marie Wurzbacher, and they enjoyed 46 wonderful years together.
Michael graduated from Purcell High School in Cincinnati. He earned his Economics degree at the University of Cincinnati, a Masters in Management and Finance from St. Xavier University in Cincinnati, and completed the Food Industry Management Program at the University of California. He proudly served 12 years as a store manager for Kroger and earned multiple awards as a store manager during his 28-year career at Wal-Mart. Michael’s dedication and skill led to increasingly challenging opportunities that would take him and his family from his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio to Houston, Texas, with stints in Monticello, Arkansas and Spring, Sealy, and Nacogdoches, Texas.
Enthusiastic and outgoing, Michael constantly made friends of complete strangers, always striking up conversations and bringing smiles to everyone he met. He was a community leader known for helping his coworkers and selflessly devoting time and energy to many individuals and organizations. Michael focused on building meaningful relationships, everyone seemed to know him and could share a story about his kindness or how wonderful it was to work with him. He prided himself on remembering everybody he ever met, and would run into an old friend almost everywhere he went.
Devoted to his family, Michael thrived on creating lasting memories. Whether it was coaching his children's sports teams, hosting boisterous family dinners, or simply offering a listening ear, his love was evident in every action. He never missed an opportunity to be with his children and grandchildren and was best known for long, tight hugs, lots of laughs and endless amounts of snacks, chocolates and candy. Some of his happiest moments were spent playing and teaching his grandchildren. When he wasn’t busy working or spending time with his family, he was most often found reliving his teenage days as a caddy on the golf course while doing his best to outhit Happy Gilmore.
Michael was dedicated and involved with his local church communities throughout the years as a member of the Knights of Columbus chapters, most recently at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land, TX. He was an enthusiastic volunteer for the Houston Food Bank and spent many happy hours helping others.
Michael is survived by his wife, Kathleen Halpin; sons Michael Halpin and wife, April; Anthony Halpin and wife, Simone; Patrick Halpin and wife, Kayla; Matthew Halpin and wife, Judy; daughter, Elizabeth McDermott and husband, Mark; grandchildren Mattie, Alexandria, Eli, James, Asher, Owen, Liv, Leo, Beau, Jaxon and Luca; brothers John Halpin and wife, Angela; Steven Halpin; Joseph Halpin and wife, Peggy; sisters Angela Halpin, Catherine Teasdale and husband, Taylor; Antoinette Halsted and husband, Jon; mother-in-law Helen Wurzbacher; brothers-in-law Frederick, Donald, and Richard Wurzbacher and wife, Belinda and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved more than they know.
Michael's funeral will take place at Holy Family Catholic Church, 814 Hawthorne Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45205, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 10:00 am, with a visitation to begin at 9:00 am. Burial will follow at St. Joseph New Cemetery, 4500 Foley Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45238.
The family wishes to extend an abundance of gratitude to Hoover Oaks Memory Care and Assisted Living and HCA Hospice of Houston for two years of never ending love, support, and care for our Michael. She was married to Joe Gonzales and was a homemaker all her life. Maria was devout in church and read her bible daily. She was known as a prayer warrior and was the backbone of her family. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was proceded in death by her sister's Victoria DeLa Rosa, Ruth Chaves and Martha Garcia. Her brothers Elias Rodriguez, Victor Rodriguez and Micheal Rodriguez.
Maria will be missed by her daughter Beatrice Gonzales, sister Lydia Reyes, grandchildren Maria Gonzales, Michelle Gonzales, Victoria Gonzales, Veronica Gonzales, Kaylah Gonzales, Jonathan Gonzales and Daniel Gonzales. Great Grandchildren Henry Harris, Carlos, Erica, Rebecca, Angel, Gabby, Maria, Joseph, Mia, Kayhla, Daniel Jr., Isahia, Kingston, Ally and Skylah Gonzales.

Obituary Preview: Jeannine Simmonds Gomillion walked into the healing arms of her savior, Jesus Christ, peacefully and surrounded by her children, Thursday, February 29, 2024. We feel certain Jeannine was welcomed by her younger brother, Randy, mother and former husband, Wallace. She was born to Thelma Mathias Simmonds Jones and Horace Simmonds in Houston, Texas in 1939. Jeannine grew up in the Heights of Houston surrounded by loving grandparents, aunts and uncles who had moved to Texas from Trenton, New Jersey. Jeannine excelled in school as a young girl graduating at 17 from Reagan High School. She married Wallace Gomillion and left college to start a family but returned to work when their youngest child was in school working as an accountant. At 50 she returned to college encouraged and supported by her mother, graduating from the University of Houston, Clear Lake with a Bachelors in Accounting, passing all 4 sections of the CPA exam in her first attempt. She went on to care for many clients at Longnecker, Thomas CPA, then Clyde Thomas CPA, then took over the practice when Mr. Thomas retired. She served many clients as a woman business owner partnering with women serving their community even till the week before entering her final hospital stay. Jeannine most loved the relationships she nurtured with many clients many of whom she considered close friends through serving as their CPA.
She leaves behind many dear friends some of which were friends for 60 years all of which she counted among her richest blessings. Her rich friend community was one of mutual support and blessing. Jeannine was very committed to, nurtured by and loved by her church, First Methodist Houston, many of her friendships grew from her involvement in church. She enjoyed singing in the church choir for years, attending the Houston and Pasadena Symphonies, playing the piano, knitting with a special group of friends and in recent years she had thoroughly enjoyed her online Bible study group through Bible Study Fellowship.
Family was very important to Jeannine, she missed her mother and her brother every day. Showing her love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was a huge focus of her prayers, time and attention. She attended countless sporting events, choir performances, musical & play performances, dance recitals, piano recitals, hosted vacation weeks with MaMa, Grandparents’ Day celebrations (most recently as the art teacher’s (Meghan) grandmother, Senior Thesis presentations, and graduations for her 8 grandchildren; Campbell Caskey (Meghan), Katie Schwab (Jeremy), Meghan Gomillion, Drew Gomillion, Jacob Gomillion, Aaron Gomillion, Macy Gomillion & Ella Gomillion. Her latest visit with her great grandchildren; Cole, Sam & Owen Caskey was a delight she treasured. Some of her favorite vacations were at Mo Ranch in the Texas Hill Country with her children, grandchildren, nephew, friends and their families. Jeannine treasured her relationship with her half brother, Kit Simmonds and his daughter Sara Simmonds Judd, Sara’s performances delighted mom. Jeannine’s treasured relationships with her sisters in law/love, their children and grandchildren brought her immeasurable joy.
Jeannine (MaMa) set an inspiring example (Proverbs 31:25) to her children & grandchildren through her amazing sense of perseverance which originated from some serious health limitations from childhood. Raised primarily by a single mother Jeannine never let the obstacles of her circumstances prevent or limit her from persevering to work hard and be her best. As a dear friend characterized Mom, “wrung out every part of her body and mind” as she served others. Her faith in Jesus sustained her through many hardships. Her children Laura Caskey (Stan), Monte Gomillion (Amy) and Kevin Gomillion (Jana) appreciate the prayers, love and care provided by her extended family, many friends, friends children, the nurses and doctors of HCA Southeast and Choice Hospice.

Benny is survived by his wife, Sam Formby, son, Benny Guadalupe Formby, and daughter, Britnie Formby. Along with five grandchildren, Dazia Rene Formby, Benny Guadalupe Neil Formby, Jewel Raelynn Music, Perla Rose Music, and Jaxon Ray Formby. He also leaves behind bonus children that he played a part in their lives as a father figure. Amber Garza, Alexis Trevino, Vanessia Morales and Kaylah Luna.
Benny was an amazing man and hard worker for many years and always strived to provide for his family. He was loved and respected by many. Benny will truly be missed by everyone who met him.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents, George Austin and Dapholine Louise Hutto. He is survived by his brother, Darrell Lynn Hutto and sister-in-law Mary Hutto, nephew Ross Hutto and wife Juanita, niece Kyndal Hutto and nephew Kai Hutto. He is also survived by his cousin Barbara Crook, his faithful housekeeper and aide Jessica Walker, and many family members and friends.
Keith graduated Sam Houston High School and subsequently joined the United States Air Force serving from 1963 – 1967. He spent the next forty years in the family furniture business, Hutto’s Furniture Shop. After retirement, Keith became known as The Cookie Man at Brookdale Independent Living Memorial City where he lived for the past four years. He never met a stranger and loved handing out cookies, candies, and holiday treats to the Memorial City residents and employees.
Keith was very proud to be a native Houstonian and Texan, and he supported Houston and the University of Texas sports teams. He also enjoyed watching John Wayne and other classic movies and sharing Sunday morning breakfasts with his best friend Mark “Bubba” Marbury.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 2, at 11:00 A.M. at Brookside Memorial Park, 13401 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039.

Rick was born April 29, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio to Robert Banschenbach and Lillian Bauer, along with his brother Robert and half-brother Matthew. He moved to Houston in 1978 where he later married Elizabeth Blair and started a family of three children, John, William, and Sarah, who he loved immensely and was very involved in the early parts of their lives.
Rick was a hard worker, very good with his hands, and for most of his life earned his living in construction trades and built custom furniture and home décor pieces. In his free time, Rick enjoyed fishing, watching sports, billiards, and taking care of his dogs. He will be remembered as an easy going, caring, and kindhearted man that was able to get along with everyone.
Rick will be honored at Bear Creek Pioneers Park Tuesday, March 5 at 4:30pm with dinner to follow at Lopez Mexican Restaurant at 6:30pm. All are welcome to attend to share memories and celebrate Rick’s life with his friends and family.
