On March 11, 2024, a terrible accident occurred, and we lost our precious young man, Austin Mykal Bestwick.

Born on January 3, 1998, Austin was a son of Melissa Mastrofine and later gained a loving stepfather, Brian Joslin.

The kindest heart and a smile that would light up the whole world, Austin loved riding his bike every day and listening to music. He was sweet, super smart, and the happiest when he was competing in the many fishing tournaments where he won more trophies than he could hold.

Our world has grown dim, and we will miss Austin forever.

In addition to his mother and stepfather, he is survived by his “Nampy” & “Nama”, Ronald Bestwick & Terri Bestwick, his “Mema”, Loretta Leandro and grandfather, Luis Leandro.

He is also survived by his brothers, Jason Jones, Tucker Jones & Isaiah Joslin and his sister, Patricia Mastrofine.

He was a retired Deputy Sheriff with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, and a member of Salem Baptist Church in Anderson.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Cartee, stepchildren-Melissa Bridges and Wesley Graham, and four grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Beth Cartee, and his brother, Barrett Cartee, as well as his aunts, Carolyn Pendergrass, and Barbara Brown.

A memorial service will be held from 3:00pm – 5:00pm, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Salem Baptist Church, 1325 Salem Church Rd., Anderson, S.C. 29625.

William Earl “Pops” Mick, a proud veteran serving 28 years in the U.S. Navy, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Born in Carmi, Illinois, on June 28, 1942, he was a son of the late Gladys Hutchinson and the late Charles Mick.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Lee Smith Mick, his brothers, Vernard & Charles, and his daughter-in-law, Debbie West.

At the age of 18, he enlisted in the military and worked his way up to Master Chief Petty Officer. After retiring and moving to South Carolina with his wife, Bonnie, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Pops was a big sports fan, and he loved watching sports of all kinds. He spent many years coaching kids in the local recreation clubs and loved watching his grandchildren compete in various sports.

He is survived by his sons, William Mick, Jr. (Debbie), James West, Ricky Mick (Elizabeth), Joseph West (Tracy) & Dennis West (Kristi) and he was the proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his siblings, Kathryn Jordan, Ruthann Miller, Tom Mick & James Mick.

Pops will be missed by many.

The family will host a memorial service at a later date with a Navy Burial at Sea.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 27 years, June Oakes. Paul was a family man, who had the kindest heart. Ready and willing to help anyone in need. He loved his grandchildren. He would always say, "they keep me young."

He was a hardworking man, who spent his time always working with his hands. He loved all outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, gardening, and building things. He also loved cooking, music, loved playing the piano, and drawing. He was so creative. He always told the wildest stories, and had such a great sense of humor. His favorite place was Edisto Beach where he would spend the days crabbing and surf fishing. He was always the life of the party.

He is survived by his daughters, Miranda Bridges, (Wesley Gaston) & Christine Oakes (Jerry Lamb), his grandchildren, Kei'Leigh Bridges, Keisen Bridges, Delylah Lamb, Oliver Lamb & Hazely Lamb as well as a very special part of the family, Keith Bridges. He is also survived by brothers ,Harry Oakes & Jeff Oakes (Rocio)

Born August 7, 1941, in the Piercetown Community of Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Robert Sargent and the late Catherine Louise Campbell Sargent.

Martha retired from Beneficial Finance Company in Anderson, where she retired with over 30 years’ service as a loan officer.

She was a devoted member of Orrville Baptist Church (now Upstate Church-Anderson), for over 60 years. During her time at the church, she sang in the sanctuary choir and was a Sunday School teacher, for young adults, for over 50 years.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Martha is survived by her sons, Greg McLane (Nita), and Jerry McLane (Michelle), grandchildren, Josh McLane, Zachary McLane (Amy), Hunter McLane, Joseph McLane (Helen), Catie McLane, Tosha Medlock (Joe), and Chris McLane (Brittney), as well as thirteen great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her siblings, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Hood, Shirley Orr (Arnold), Herbert Sargent (Linda), and Donnie Sargent.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, James Sargent.

Born on January 16, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Mac Hamm, and the late Lutrell Ruby Mae Hamm, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Lenola “Pat” Ann Addis, and her mother-in-law who she dearly loved Guynell Hughes.

Brenda was a woman of many titles working very hard at Singer Manufacturing and eventually retired from her position at NCR. Her greatest joy in life to her though was her role in raising her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She strived and succeeded to provide the perfect life for them all. She loved the sunshine and adored the birds that came and visited her on her back patio every single day. She was her happiest spending her Saturday afternoons joy riding with her husband Buddy, while having a cold canned Pepsi in her hand. Brenda was a woman of strong Christian faith and a devoted member of Covenant Baptist Church. She shared the love of God with everyone she came in contact with, and you could truly see His love in her. Her kind and nurturing spirit would radiate as soon as she walked into a room and will continue to radiate through all the lives that she touched during her time on earth.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years and the love of her life, Buddy Hughes, her daughters, Kym Hughes, Heather Hughes (Shane), granddaughters, Kennedy Cobb (Jordan), Abigail Harris (Dakota), grandson, Brently Harris, and great grandchildren, Raeleigh Mae and Adler Boone. Brenda is also survived by her sister Debbie Phillips (Danny), her brother, Donnie Hamm (Lynn) and her beloved nieces and nephews.

Samual Alex Hartsell, age 85, of Anderson, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

Born May 21, 1938, he was the son of the late William Bill Hartsell, and the late Audrey Roark Hartsell.

Alex worked many years at Anderson Fire and Safety, and Perpetual Bank. In his later years he worked for 10 years as a school bus driver in Anderson School District 3. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, and a member of Little Mountain Presbyterian Church in Abbeville, SC. Alex made friends with everyone he met. He especially loved talking with his lifelong Gamecock buddies on the phone daily. His quick wit, and constant little laugh and smile will surely be missed.

Alex is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Dianne Holden Hartsell, daughters, Renee Manoff (Scott), of Pawley’s Island, SC, Tina Reece of Anderson, SC, daughter-in-law, Dawn Hartsell, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and son, Alex Hartsell Jr. (Beth), of West Ashley, SC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Charlie Manoff (Liz), Maddie Manoff, Zachary Phillips, Alexis Phillips, Hannah Phillips (Lexi), Will Hartsell (Jamie), Kaela Hartsell (Julia), Sam Hartsell, Breanna Reece, Colt Reece, and Avery Reece. Alex is survived by 1 great grandson, Timothy James Hartsell, who was the apple of his eye, and looking forward to the arrival of a great granddaughter in June, along with his brother, Tim Hartsell, and sisters Frances H. Trayham, Audrey H. Rigsbee, and Anne Hartsell.

He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Hartsell, granddaughter, Chelsea Tumbleston, brothers, Billy Hartsell and Vaughn Earle Hartsell, and sister, Betty Sue H. Willis.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Little Mountain Presbyterian Church, 3836 SC-28, Abbeville, SC, 29620. Rev. Daryl Fetzer will officiate.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10am-11am at the church. During other times the family will be at the home.

A private interment will be held on a later date at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

Stan is also survived by his siblings, Nancy West (Rick) of Charleston, S.C., Leonard Louie Newton (Ann) of Hollywood, S.C., Thomas Lee Newton (Caroline) of Charleston, S.C., and a sister-in-law Tina Taylor Newton of Mount Pleasant, S.C.

He was a graduate of Clemson University and served as a Lieutenant junior grade in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Silversides.

After serving his country, he held various jobs from New Jersey to Texas and returned to South Carolina in 1992, settling in the Upstate where he made his home.

Mr. Bill had a love for racing, fishing and loved western dancing. You would always find him with a tool in his hand as he was known for building and fixing anything he could get his hands on.

He retired from T.L. Hanna High School after being head custiodian for over 25 years.

Along with his wife of over 34 years, he is survived by his daughters, Diane Benson, Karen Benson Schnaars & Jennifer Dismukes (Chris), son, Joe Caraglia (Marge), grandchildren, Charles Benson, April Shannon, Aaron Echevarria, Ashley Schnaars, Shelby Schnaars, Gabriella "Gabby" Caraglia & Olivia "Liv" Caraglia and two great-grandchildren, Dade Dodgin & Abigail Shannon.

He is also survived by his siblings, Virginia McNutt-Krueger, Veronica Schoenhaar, Charles Benson & James Benson along with many nieces and nephews and countless friends that are more like family.

Jeanette was a faithful member of Varennes Baptist Church and served so many children throughout the years while working in the cafeteria of several schools throughout all Anderson County school districts. She had a servant's heart and will be missed by her family and others who knew her.

In addition to her husband of nearly 59 years, she is survived by her daughter, Kelley Shaw (Keith), her son, Hugh Allen Parker, III (Melissa) and her grandchildren, Amanda Boggs, Taylor Boggs, Alexander Shaw, Avery Shaw, Daniel Parker & Raegan Parker as well as her son-in-law, Tony Boggs.

A mechanic by trade, his passion was working on automobiles. He had the most love for his family and his beautiful wife of 51 years. Born in Hartwell, GA, she was a daughter of the late Homer Elmer Dyar and the late Mildred Greenway Dyar.

Patsy loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and was a faithful follower of Christ where this faithfulness led her to be a part of The Gideons International.

She worked at Clinkscales Pharmacy for many years and then she and her husband reestablished the Clayton Reed Shop. Together they worked for themselves for many years until retirement.

Patsy is survived by her daughter, Crystal Clayton Hooper, along with her husband Doug. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Clayton Ehasz (Hannah) & Lindsey Hooper, great-grandson, George Ehasz and her siblings, Peggi Poore (Ray) & Salley Wells (David).

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Elbert Clayton, and her siblings, Opal Boleman, Scotty Dyar, Gloria Hanley, Grace Buffington, Larry Dyar, Bob Dyar & Ted Dyar.

Benjie was the retired owner of the Yellow Cab franchise in Greenville, S.C. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Temple in Starr, S.C., and was an amateur artist and poet.

He is survived by his siblings, Carlie Wicker (Jimmy-deceased) and Erik Brogden (William Obando). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, Danielle Klokocnik, Jaime Ashworth (Sarah), Devin Littleton, and Donavon Kilpatrick, as well as several great-nieces and nephews, Carley Padgett, Connor Klokocnik, Jorja Klokocnik, Aubrey Ashworth, Jaxon Ashworth, Miley Littleton, Haven Littleton, Brent Madden, Brandon Martinez, Emiley Ashworth, and Lane York.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Tami Brogden Littleton.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, in The Tribute Room of The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, 1621 Pearman Dairy Rd., Anderson, S.C. 29625. Rev Sam Duncan and Rev. Dwayne Peeples will officiate.

The family will receive friends, at The Standard, prior to the service, from 1:30pm – 3:00pm.

He was born June 20, 1951, in Anderson to the late Cecil Troy and Doris Rodgers Lowe. He was twice married.

First to the late Juanita Broome Lowe and more recently to Debbie King Lowe. Mr. Lowe was a graduate of Belton-Honea Path High School, Class of 1969, and Anderson Junior College, Class of 1971, and Greenville Tech.

He was active in community, civic, and church affairs throughout his life having lived in Seneca, SC, Covington, GA, and Honea Path, SC. Mr. Lowe retired from Sears after forty-plus years as a service technician. His church membership was with Keowee Baptist Church, and he attended Long Branch Baptist Church in his most recent years. He served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Youth Leader throughout his churchmanship.

In addition to his wife, Debbie, John is survived by a son, Joshua Lowe of Honea Path and a daughter, Ashley Lowe Keown (David) of Honea Path; a step-daughter, Wendy King Whitfield (Bradley) of Anderson; eleven grandchildren and one step-grandchild; and three brothers, Rev. Dr. Billy Lowe (Brenda) of Cherryville, NC, Steve Lowe (Marilyn) of Sumpter, SC, and Tommy Lowe (Kathi) of Honea Path, SC with several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, Juanita, John was preceded in death by a brother, James Samuel Lowe.

A celebration of Life Service was held on March 1 at Honea Path First Baptist Church in the Vault Auxiliary Building at 11am with Rev. Dr. Billy Lowe officiating.

A private imposition of ashes will follow at a later date.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Lowe may be made to charities of one’s choice.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Mark Loyd.

Sherry had a love for cooking and the kitchen was where she was most often found looking through the window searching for birds. Her second favorite was reading, and her daughters fondly remember her always having her nose in a book.

She continued her love for reading when Facebook arrived, and her family will always remember her love for keeping up with everyone.

In addition to her husband of 56 years, she is survived by her daughters, Regina Spearman Carey & Amanda Spearman Hudgens (Steve), her grandchildren, Randi Carey, Phillip Carey, Briana Spearman (Brandon Shaw) & Brittany Spearman as well as great-grandchildren, Nicole Spearman and Mia Carey.

She is also survived by her sister, Lynn Ellis, her niece, Jennifer Brucke, sister-in-law, Sharmon Nation (Jimmy), brother-in-law, Ricky Spearman and nephews, Greg & Travis Spearman.

The family will host a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 4, 2024, in the sanctuary of Gethsemane Baptist Temple, 6116 Hwy. 81 S, Starr, SC 29684. Rev. Sam Duncan will officiate.

Harold is survived by his sons, Pastor Mark Duncan (Jeanie), and Brett Duncan (Liz). He is also survived by his grandchildren Cameron Stewart Duncan, Bailey Duncan Hall (Shane), and Alysia Madera, along with great-grandchildren, Judah Bennett, and Clara Bennett. Harold is also survived by his brother, Dennis Duncan, along with his niece and nephews, Ricky Duncan, Don Duncan, and Gail Sargent.

Along with his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Sammons, and his granddaughter, Mackenzie Duncan Bennett.

Ruth Walker Stevenson, 77, wife of Frank M. Stevenson, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Larry Edward Walker and the late Wilma Rogers Walker.

A 1964 graduate of T.L. Hanna High School, Ruth was raised and spent most of her life in Anderson County. After high school, she attended Winthrop College where she graduated with a B.A. Degree in Biology in 1968 and went to further her education, receiving a Master of Education degree in Natural Science Teaching from Clemson University in 1974.

She retired from Anderson County School District Two where she taught Physical Science & Biology for 36 years at Belton-Honea Path High School. There she also served as Science Dept. Chairperson, co-sponsor of the Senior Class and the National Honor Society.

Her achievements included being selected as South Carolina’s Outstanding Biology Teacher in 1982 and was a lifetime member of the South Carolina Association of Biology Teachers where she served a term as Treasurer.

She was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church in Anderson.

Ruth was an avid lover of nature and especially enjoyed her pet cats, Fluffy & TigerTail, as well as visits from her “grand-dog”, Benji.

She also loved her plants, the hummingbirds, her Koi fishpond and enjoyed preserving the produce from her husband’s garden.

Her favorite pastimes included traveling, antiquing, and spending time with her family. She was so very special and will be tremendously missed.

Along with her husband of 55 years, she is survived by her twin sons, John Frank Stevenson (Amanda) of Clemson, SC, and Joel Marion Stevenson of Belmont, NC, as well as her three granddaughters, Leila Marion, Adair Elizabeth & Vivian Grace Stevenson, all of Clemson, SC.

She is also survived by her sister, Judy Walker Peters (David) and niece, Leslie Walker Peters of Columbia, SC.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 2609 Highway 29 N, Anderson, SC 29621. Rev. John McCallum will officiate.
