Henry "Hank" Floyd Harris - January 03, 1953 - July 11, 2021

Departed: 07/11/2021 (Rolla)
Obituary Preview: Henry Floyd “Hank” Harris passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in St. James, MO on July 11, 2021 after a long fought battle with cancer.  Hank was born on January 3, 1953 to the late Don and Jessie Mae Harris and spent his younger years growing up in Malden, MO.
Hank truly enjoyed life and did it with style.  He was a hard and capable worker having spent a short time in the United States Army, worked several years as a truck driver and the last seventeen years as a resort manager for Bullwinkles Lodge just outside Poplar Bluff, MO.  He took great pride in his work and enjoyed being the “go to man” for his employees and patrons.  Hank had an incredible love of horse racing and was constantly looking for not only the next winner, but the next champion.  Like Secretariat, Hank had a huge heart and was willing to lend anyone a hand however he could as long as he didn’t have to break a sweat.  Hank was an avid fisherman and truly enjoyed fishing for trout on Lake Taneycomo.  He prided himself that he had spent a good number of years renting a cabin at the same resort at least once every year.
Hank told stories.  LOTS of stories.  He loved to talk to people and over the years won over the hearts of many friends and family.  He was seldom at a loss for words and when he was, it was because he had met his match for a moment with sarcastic humor.  Never one to be upset or aggravated with these conversations, you always knew when he had been had by a friendly slug to the shoulder through laughter. Hank loved his country and between the humorous stories and tall tales, often talk of politics came to light.  He called himself a die hard Democrat, but one could often hear through conversation that he had more of a middle of the road viewpoint.  Like a lot of people, he just longed for the days when everything wasn’t so “left or right.”
Hank was preceded in death by his parents, one older sister, Donna Metcalf, and brothers-in-law Ben Metcalf and Raymond Mueller.  Siblings surviving Hank include a brother Ed (Lori) Harris, sister Dolly Harris, sister Sheila (Raymond) Mueller, and brother Michael Harris.  He was a loving father to daughters Maretta Portwood of Crescent, OK and Donna Rackley (Randy) of Saint James, MO.  He is also survived by ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services for Hank will be announced at a later date.

David was an avid hunter who was completely at home in the outdoors.  He loved sharing his many hunting stories.  He enjoyed watching the St Louis Blues and Cardinals, but nothing was more enjoyable for him than watching his children and grandchildren play their game of choice.  David was athletic himself and played years of softball and volleyball.  There was nothing mechanical that David could not fix and enjoyed working and talking about classic autos.  David had a free spirit and was always ready to hit the open road on his Harley and see where it would lead.  Taking his “little buddy” Deeogee on a short drive everyday was part of his routine.  He loved to laugh and spend time with his family.  He always had a big smile and he never met a stranger.  He was loved and known by many as “Big Dave”.
When David was diagnosed, he sought every reasonable medical intervention to restore his health and maintain a good quality of life.  While David will be dearly missed by all who knew him, he would want everyone to know that he was prepared and ready to meet his Lord and Savior.
Everyone will be welcome to a Celebration of David’s Life which will be determined at a future date and time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cremation?

Cremation is the process of reducing a body to its basic elements through exposure to intense heat. The process is carried out in a specialized facility known as a crematorium. The remains, commonly referred to as "ashes," are actually bone fragments that have been processed into a finer substance usually weighing between 3 to 7 pounds for an average adult.

Is cremation considered environmentally friendly?

Cremation is often viewed as a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial because it does not require a burial plot, embalming chemicals, or a casket. However, it does use fossil fuels and produces carbon emissions. Many facilities are searching for ways to reduce its environmental impact.

How can I be sure that the remains I receive are those of my loved one?

Reputable cremation providers follow strict identification protocols to ensure that the remains returned to families are indeed those of their loved one. This usually involves careful tracking of the deceased from the moment they are received until the ashes are returned to the family.

Can I have a funeral service with a cremation?

Yes, you can arrange a traditional funeral service either before the cremation with the body present in a rental casket, or after the cremation with the remains either in an urn or as a more memorial service without the remains present.

What kind of urn should I choose for the ashes?

The type of urn you choose can be a personal decision based on aesthetic preferences, the intended final resting place of the ashes, or budget. Materials range from simple cardboard or plastic containers to elaborate and decorative urns made of metal, wood, or ceramic.

Can I scatter my loved one's ashes?

Many families choose to scatter the ashes of their loved ones in a place that was meaningful to them. It is important, however, to check local regulations regarding the scattering of ashes, as there may be restrictions depending on the location you choose.

Is cremation more affordable than a traditional burial?

In general, cremation can be less expensive than a traditional burial because it often does not involve costs such as a casket, burial plot, or headstone. However, the total cost can vary depending on the services and memorial products you choose.

Can multiple family members witness the cremation process?

Some crematoriums provide a viewing area for family members who wish to be present during the cremation process. Availability and policies can vary, so it is best to check with your chosen provider.

What do I do if my loved one wanted to be cremated but didn't leave any instructions?

If no clear instructions were left, the decision typically falls to the next of kin or an executor. It's always wise to seek the input of other family members and loved ones to reach a decision that honors the deceased and provides comfort to those left behind.

Are there different types of cremation services?

Yes, cremation services can range from direct cremation, which involves no formal service, to full-service cremation that includes various ceremonies before or after the cremation process. It is important to discuss with your provider the type of service you desire.

How long does the cremation process take?

The cremation process itself typically takes several hours, but the entire process including paperwork, transportation, and return of the remains can take a few days to a week.

Can I personalize a cremation service?

Absolutely. Cremation services can be personalized with memorial video tributes, special readings, favorite music selections, and even themed decor that reflects the hobbies or passions of the deceased.

What happens to items like jewelry during cremation?

Families are typically asked to remove any jewelry or personal items before the cremation. Items left with the deceased during the cremation process will be destroyed by the high temperatures.

Do religious beliefs affect the decision for cremation?

Cremation is acceptable in many religions, but it is still not practiced by some. If you are uncertain, it is best to consult leaders within your faith community or conduct research to ensure that cremation aligns with your religious beliefs and practices.

Can cremated remains be divided among family members?

Yes, it is possible for cremated remains to be divided among family members in smaller urns or keepsake jewelry. This must be arranged with the crematorium and they ensure that this is done respectfully and according to your wishes.

How soon after death must a cremation take place?

While there is not a universal deadline, laws vary by jurisdiction. Cremation generally takes place within a few days to a week after death, although it can be delayed if necessary for funeral services or other family considerations.

Is a casket required for cremation?

While a traditional casket is not required for cremation, a cremation container or casket that is fully combustible is necessary to transport the body to the cremation chamber and for the process itself.

Can I arrange for a cremation ahead of time?

Yes, preplanning a cremation is possible and it can relieve the emotional and financial burden on family members. You can specify your wishes and even prepay for the services you select.

What steps should I take if I want to transport ashes overseas?

Transporting cremated remains overseas requires a set of specific steps including obtaining the necessary documentation, such as a death certificate and a cremation certificate. Check with the embassy or consulate of the destination country as well as the airline for regulations and requirements.

What should I consider when choosing a cremation provider?

When selecting a cremation provider, consider their reputation, the range and quality of services offered, pricing transparency, staff empathy and professionalism, as well as the cleanliness and condition of their facilities.
