Maggie Wright - August 16, 1937 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Richland Center)
Obituary Preview: Maggie Wright, 86, of Richland Center died on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Pine Valley Community Village. Maggie Wright was born in Illinois on August 16th, 1937, as Margarette Lorraine Mahara, to Esther (Andrus) and Samuel Mahara. She was the oldest of 9 children with 2 stepchildren to join the family later. She met her husband Richard Wright while attending school. She would tell stories of how he would pick on her by dipping her braids in the inkwell. They were united in marriage in Indiana on January 21st, 1956. They had 5 children all except one being born in Illinois, Robbie was the ‘Wisconsin baby.’
Mom and dad decided to move to Wisconsin around 1967 to the Ithaca area. They tried their hand at farming which led to many funny memories and stories. After it didn’t work out, they moved back to Illinois for a couple of years. But mom missed Wisconsin and begged dad to move her back, he finally gave in, but he stayed in Illinois working and coming home on the weekends. Mom was a hard worker; she always had a job. She would talk about some of the work she did like making metal truck bumpers as being a ‘man’s job’. She had jobs working in factories, restaurants, clothes cleaner, picking apples, and providing care in a nursing home. She was extremely proud that she had gotten her GED later in life. Mom, dad and Robbie moved to the old Valton schoolhouse in 1984. She attended the Valton Friends Church, where she grew in her faith and participated in activities like sewing quilts. She also enjoyed gardening and canned quite a bit, especially when us kids were younger. Mom and dad had a few years where they enjoyed staying at a campground outside of Reedsburg. They went on a trip out west to see Mount Rushmore but mom was having severe headaches so they cut the trip short so she could get medical care. She found out she had a brain aneurysm, luckily having surgery before it ‘burst.’
After dad passed in 1999 mom was lonely in the schoolhouse by herself so she decided to sell it to Terry and moved back to Richland Center. She went to country dances, to Symons for swimming and spent time making friends at the Community Center. She liked going to yard sales or to thrift stores looking to find things to buy. She had a collection of dolls and knickknacks. She explained that she liked to have things because she didn’t have much growing up. She was good at hiding things too, which led to a lot of time being spent in later years trying to find the things she hid and thought someone had taken them from her room.
Mom had a relationship with Robert Hawley that lasted several years. He took good care of mom driving her to appointments or out to eat. He moved into Pine Valley in the room next to mom’s and she made sure he was getting good care and going with him to his appointments.
Mom took the passing of Terry and Robbie hard. The last time I was at the nursing home she had told the aids that she was looking for the boys that I had brought. They told her I hadn’t been there, and I walked in a few minutes later while they were still talking with her. When I asked what boys, I had brought she replied, “your brothers.” I would like to think that Terry and Robbie were there to help mom transition from this world to the next. I pray that we all find joy in knowing mom is at peace and is finally home.
Maggie is survived by her children: Richard Wright Jr. of Kentucky, Rose Griffa of Hillsboro, WI, and Lisa (Dan) Williams of New Haven, MO; brother and sisters Tena (Dennis) Laswell of Lone Rock, WI, Chuck (Mary) Mahara of Somonauk, IL, Patty Lynch of Richland Center, WI, and Ruthie (Steve) Bols of Vonore, TN; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and even a couple of great-great grandchildren.
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband Richard, sons Terry and Robert, her mother and father and sisters: Bessie Wirtz, Zelma Hulett and brothers Samuel, Joseph, Delbert and Seymour and son-in-law Dale Griffa, and grandsons David Haight and Justin Williams.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Pratt Memorial Chapel, with Ron Fruit officiant. A livestream will be available at the Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service website. A burial will follow in the Valton Cemetery. Virgil Peckham - September 04, 1933 - January 29, 2024

Departed: 01/29/2024 (Richland Center)
Obituary Preview: Virgil "Buzz" Peckham was born 4 September 1933 in Gillingham, WI. He married Ruby Glee (Robbins) in Richland Center, WI 19 February 1955 at the First Baptist Church. Though moving frequently, they maintained their church membership at First Baptist for the rest of their lives. Virgil graduated from Richland Center High School in 1951. Thereafter, he attended University of Wisconsin at Platteville from 1951-1952. His university education ended abruptly when he enlisted in the United States Air Force, June 1952. During the war, Virgil served in Korea as a medic and then in Greenland, where he participated in what was at the time a secret mission to refuel planes in the air.
After his military service, Virgil was hired by Pacific Finance/Transamerica Financial Services. He began by emptying waste bins and working his way up to senior management, and by the time of his 1994 retirement, Virgil was a senior vice president of Transamerica HomeFirst Corporation. Homefirst was an early reverse mortgage company, and Virgil was very proud of its mission to keep cash-poor folks in their own homes. Additionally, his duties expanded to include planning international incentive trips for 400-500 top-achieving employees. When Virgil retired, his position had to be filled by three people.
Analytical and always problem-solving, Virgil and his family were transferred frequently by Transamerica and lived in seven states: WI, MD, OK, OH, GA, IN, and CA. Over the course of their lives, Virgil and Ruby traveled extensively for Transameria, visiting 39 countries on five continents, making life-long friends and collecting cherished treasures. Another of his accomplishments was being able to send his daughters to college.
Retiring in Georgia, Virgil relished spending time fishing, shooting skeet, and sitting quietly in their boat with Ruby, while Ruby enjoyed traveling with her gardening club and visiting her mother, Glee Robbins, in Richland Center, WI. After her death, Virgil returned to Richland Center to live out his days. Hard-working, driven, and stubborn, Virgil was a perfectionist in all things, especially yardwork and in providing for his beloved family. He is remembered by his daughters as instilling an indominable work ethic and resiliency, but they loved his zany side especially when on the Fourth of July, Virgil’s favorite holiday, he set off hundreds of fireworks, bottle rockets, and loud black cat fire-crackers with wild abandon…while Ruby feared a potential law enforcement visit!
Virgil had a great love of dogs and tolerated cats, caring for many throughout the years, and this compassion was passed along to his daughters and granddaughters.
Virgil Peckham was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Glee (Robbins) Peckham of 54 years; their son, Roger David Peckham; his parents, Virgil Burton Peckham, Sr. and Ariel (Thompson) Peckham of Gillingham, WI; and his sister, Anna Lou Peckham Strickland of Denver, Colorado.
Left with loving memories are two daughters, Susan Michelle Peckham and Mary Anna Peckham; two sons-in-law, Daniel E. Abraham and Steve J. Johnson, respectively, all of Silver Spring, Maryland; three granddaughters, Gabriella Glee Johnson, Annabelle Elizabeth Johnson, and Juna Rebeka Abraham; two nieces, two nephews, three grandnieces, five grandnephews, and 4 great-grandnephews and many friends, especially Vicki and Dale Harmon of Mauston, and Beth Ann Zentner of Richland Center.
Virgil’s daughters are indebted to, and amazed by, the dedicated, patient, and kind staff of Agrace Hospice (Kari@Richland Center, and Rae and Taylor@Wisconsin Dells); Our House-Richland Center, and Riverwood Senior Living-Wisconsin Dells.

During those years of learning she was involved in Band, Majorette, Twirler, Drama, Plays, Forensics, and Cheerleader. Marjorie graduated Valedictorian of her class. While growing up she attended the West Lima United Brethren Church including the Youth Group and Mission Group.
Marjorie married her loving husband John Schweiger on December 5, 1959 in the Bloom City United Methodist Church and together they made a real team and got the work done. Successfully raising a loving family on the family farm and for generations to come. After selling the dairy herd in 1984 she had several part time jobs. The job that was dearest to her heart was working for Jim and Daren Matthes at Matthes Farms Livestock Auction in Viola for 40 years as Weighmaster and Bookkeeping. Matthes Farms Auction is what kept her going after losing her husband John of 38 years. Marjorie served on the Bloom City Cemetery Board for 60 years and was named Richland Counties Outstanding Farm Woman in 2004. She was very proud of the farm and the life/family that her and John built over the years. She was also very proud when the farm was listed as a Century Farm in 2016. She enjoyed spending time with family, going to all the grandkids' school activities and going to every dance she could (we always joked that she would be the last person to leave a dance).
In 1998 she met Kenneth McBain, a widower who was able to step in and was her companion for many years. They were able to travel, visit family and friends, and enjoy countless weddings, parties and dances. She truly enjoyed all the special moments that they had together working and enjoying life.
Survivors include two sons Kenneth (Sally) Schweiger of Boscobel and Paul (Shelly) Schweiger of rural Hillsboro; grandchildren Derek Schweiger of rural Hillsboro, Courtney Schweiger-Wetter (Brandon) of rural LaFarge, John Schweiger of rural Hillsboro, Brittany (Brent) Edge of Dubuque, Iowa, and Kara (Brian) Annen of Kewaunee. Great Grand Children Josie Wetter, Henry and Stuart Annen, Bryn and Brielle Edge. Marjorie is further survived by her special friend and companion for 25+ years Kenneth McBain and his children Kenda VonBehren, Rich (Karen) McBain, and Kerry McBain, her sister Ethel Kanable of Richland Center and brother Harold McCoy of rural Hillsboro in addition to many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother Vera (Wallace) McCoy in 1970, her father Bernard McCoy in 1971, father-in-law Earl Schweiger in 1984, husband John in 1997, nephew Douglas Tway 2004, mother-in-law Velma Schweiger in 2006, brother-in-law Marvin Schweiger 2012, brother-in-law Loyal “John” Tway 2002, nephew Bruce Tway in 2015, brother-in-law Virgil Kanable in 2017, and her sister Mary Mae Tway 12-20-2023.

Anita June Waterman - June 10, 1944 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Richland Center)
Obituary Preview: Anita June Waterman, age 79 of Richland Center WI, died on Wednesday January 24, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on 6/10/1944, the daughter of Elgie and Veda (Hardy) Ray, in Richland Center and grew up on her family’s farm in rural Richland Center. She attended Crow Hill grade school until the 8th grade and graduated from the Richland Center High School in 1962.
Anita met the love of her life, Jim, at the Nazarene church where both of their families where members. After graduating high school Anita moved to Madison for work and Jim soon followed. Jim describes this time in their life as “the Best Days”. Anita and Jim were united in marriage on February 23, 1964. They soon returned to Richland Center and had two daughters and their family of four was complete.
She flourished as a wife and as a mother. Anita gardened, canned, baked, cooked, and was a talented seamstress who was called on by many to alter formal attire including wedding gowns. She sewed gorgeous miniature bridesmaid dresses for a wedding, one that her granddaughter wore still hangs in Anita’s closet. She was an avid bowler at the “original” bowling alley on Friday nights. Anita and Jim loved to camp with their cherished friends and their families. They loved to snowmobile in the winter. As a family they took one big family vacation a year and their daughters saw mountains, oceans, coasts and visited many states along the way also catching up with relatives in other parts of the country. Anita grew love in her home. Quoting Jim, “The woman is the heart of the family”. Anita’s family was her joy and her greatest love. She raised her children in a time where you attended church on Sunday’s and then went to various family members’ homes where her daughters were surrounded by grandparents, aunts and uncles, and all of their cousins. Jim and Anita hosted many of their family and friends at the house they built together by Anita’s family farm in Richland Center, it might have been her special brew of chili that brought them back every year for deer hunting season.
In 1984 Anita and Jim relocated to Madison and settled in their home of 30 years in Oregon/Goodland Park, “The Beach”. Jim and Anita established many more friends here, this very unique community where neighbors help each other and become other family. Anita continued to grow the legacy of love she leaves behind, in her home with the addition of her 6 grandchildren who really were just her other kids. Her grandchildren, who she often watched, were loved just as unconditionally as her own children. Holidays with Easter Egg hunts, taking the grandkids to sports, taking them on vacations, watching all 6 (of the little monsters) at one time so their parents could get away for an evening. The laughter in that home with the 6 of the grands was magical, and they were more than a little spoiled.
Eventually Anita and Jim returned to their true “Home” of Richland Center where they have lived for the last 10 years residing in the house where Jim grew up. Anita and Jim rarely spent a day/night apart. If one of them happened to be in the hospital for health reasons the other one didn’t leave their side. They have been inseparable always.
Anita is survived by her husband of almost 60 years Jim Carl Waterman, her daughters Penny MacLeod (Bob Mueller) of Richland Center and Paula (David) Olson of Wausau, her sister Barb (Richard) Riddle of Tomah, her sister in laws Elaine Waterman of Madison and Carol “little sister” (Dan) Dugan of Richland Center, her brother in law Bill (Pat) Waterman of Florida, and her long time and best friend Joanne Spencer of Colorado. 5 grandchildren- Amanda, Shano, Andrew, Anthony, and Skyler, and 12 great grandchildren and many nieces/nephews, friends, and other family.
She is proceeded in death by her parents Elgie and Veda Ray, her mother and father in law Frank and Helen Waterman. Her siblings Mildred (Loren) Unbehaun, Harriet (Bill) Johnston, Hilda (Everall) Burns, Willard (Betty) Ray, Rose (Keith) Burns, Nancy (“Chuck”) Stuckey, other brother in laws Jim Anderson and Tom Waterman and her granddaughter Candice MacLeod. There are many other loved and cherished nieces, nephews, family, and friends that Anita has lost in her life and all have been missed by her.
Many thanks to all of Anita’s caregivers over the years which her and Jim always have referred to as “Angels”. Special thanks to SSM Heart Failure clinic/cardiology- Dr. Alan Singer, Sonja, Paula, Jess, Christa; SSM Oregon clinic- Dr. Adam Balin and Lori Brown; SSM Health at Home- Maureen Kouba and all at SSM Health at home that has come to see Anita in her home; Dr. Lauren Thomas and Lacey Hodge of the Richland Center Hospital and Clinics; and finally Agrace Hospice/Pallative Care- The Angels that held Anita and her loved ones’ hands in delivering her to God- Kari Long and Katie Sweet.
The family would also like to thank Pratts for assisting them with final arrangements as they have for many of Anita’s loved ones over the years.

And it’s awful and in between the amazing and the awful, it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living. Heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing ordinary life. And it’s breathtakingly beautiful. - L.R. Knost XOXOXO Mom

Departed: 01/22/2024 (Richland Center)
Obituary Preview: Murray Earl Moon, 77, of Richland Center, WI, died Monday morning January 22, 2024, at Soldiers Grove Health Services, Soldiers Grove, WI.
He was born in Richland Center, WI, July 30, 1946, to Earl Dyer Moon and Dorothy Mae (Jorges) Moon. After his parents divorced, he moved to Milwaukee to live with his father. He worked in his father’s filling station and graduated from Wauwatosa West High School, Wauwatosa, WI in 1964.
He married Carol Ann Rogahn on April 6, 1968, at Pentecost Lutheran, Milwaukee, WI. After the marriage they moved to Richland Center, WI where they became active members of the community, raised a family, and made their home together for 55+ years.
Cars have always been a part of Murray’s life, primarily doing mechanical and body work. Over the years he owned and worked on a ‘55, ‘56, ‘32, ‘66 Impala and a 2003 Extreme - all Chevys. He worked in and around Richland Center doing auto body work. He worked at Leyda Motors, Chitwood Auto Body, with Nick Bristol, with Darrell Tennant, at M&J Auto Parts delivering auto parts, and operating his own business, Moon’s Auto Body, for many years. A dream of his was to drive a NASCAR race car and in 1994 he enrolled in the Richard Petty Driving School and drove a race car at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. And, if you knew him - he always drove a little too fast in his own car or his infamous red hooded ‘67 pickup truck.
He was a member of the Richland County Jaycees, volunteered at SSC, and was a member of NASCAR Fans United G.R.A.C.E Team.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, a daughter Lori Moon (Michael Standish) of Franklin, TN, a son Chad Moon (Jennifer Britt) of Richland Center, and a granddaughter Taylor (Moon) Sanderfoot (Kristina Sanderfoot) of Richland Center. Jeff Rusk - December 04, 1953 - January 19, 2024

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Richland Center)
Obituary Preview: Jeffrey (Jeff) Rusk passed away on his family’s century farm in Richland County on January 19, 2024, at the age of 70. He was born December 4, 1953, in Rockford, Illinois to Clayton Chase Rusk and Irene (Ferguson) Rusk. Jeff found joy when holding sticks behind a drum kit, peace when holding the reins behind a good horse, and buoyance when holding a paddle on the water. He was skilled in all these endeavors, and especially liked to share his interests and stories with family and friends.
Over the years Jeff honed his skills as a drummer. In the 1970’s and 80’s often he could be found playing with his band in supper clubs and taverns across southwest Wisconsin. He continued his love for music throughout his life, performing assorted genres of music with eclectic groups of friends. He found rhythm in every element of life around him and created his own rhythm on almost any object.
Truly, Jeff stepped to the beat of his own drum in music and in life. He liked to wander and drive country roads, taking his time to notice details around him. He drove professionally for many years, and then changed careers in 1998 when he completed a program of study at the Kentucky Horseshoeing School. He established Little River Horseshoeing Service, thereafter, blending his love for driving the countryside with his love of the horse. Jeff worked as a farrier for more than two decades. Often, he was referred to as a horse whisperer among his clients. He was willing to work with any horse, and most humans, for the sake of the horse.
Jeff shared his love for horses with his father Clayton. Together they traveled to sales in Iowa and Wisconsin and found cutters and carriages in need of a new home and new life. Clayton worked to restore the vehicle, and Jeff put them into action behind a horse. He was a talented “whip” and spent many years training and driving horses for pleasure and show.
One of Jeff’s greatest loves was his farm and home nestled in a small valley near the convergence of two creeks, aptly named Horse Creek and Rusk Creek. He strived to share this place with his family, especially his daughters Jennifer and Jonna. He relished every aspect of the place, from loading haybales off the steep hillsides on a hot summer day, to reviving himself in the cold waters of the trout stream, to relaxing around the table for a warm family meal prepared by his beloved mother, Irene. The Rusk farm was acquired by his grandfather Chase in the 1920s and was intended to be passed down to each subsequent generation. He made many memories there as a father, son, nephew, and grandson. Alongside the experiences set by those who inhabited the land before them, he and his family set their own in the soil of the fields, among the trees on the hillside, and between the crooked banks of the stream that bears the family name. May those who steward this land into the future, remember, respect, and acknowledge them all.
Jeff’s home away from the farm was on the water. He remembered every turn and rocky pass of the perpetually winding Kickapoo River. He was a prudent student of the enigmas of the Wisconsin River. On the rivers he found freedom in the breeze, lightness in the currents, and left some of his most important memories on their banks. In 2005 he completed his certification as a paddle sport instructor and shared his talent with people of all ages at UW-Richland and on waterways throughout the area.
Jeff is survived by his daughter Jennifer Pfaff, grandson Tristan Rice, brother Raymond (Linda) Babb, sister Virginia Kay Wortman, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a community of friends. Jeff is preceded in death by his sweet daughter Jonna Irene and his parents Clayton and Irene.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service of Richland Center is assisting the family.
