Obituary Preview: Joanne B. Oncay (nee Drain)Millsboro – Joanne B. Oncay, 82, of Millsboro, passed away April 20, 2022 peacefully at home with her loving family by her side.  Born in Philadelphia, PA on July 11, 1939.  Joanne was the daughter of Harry J., Sr. and Anna Juhascik Drain. After graduation she went to work at Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia, where she met her loving husband of 60 years, Terry Oncay.  She was a homemaker until moving to Delaware where she worked for DuPont.  Upon retirement from DuPont, she moved to Millsboro, DE.  She was a member of St. Mary Mother of the Peace Catholic Church and former member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in New Castle.  Joanne and Terry volunteered every Tuesday for Meals on Wheels for over 20 years.  She was a loving mother and her family was her world.  She enjoyed skiing, golfing, yearly vacations with family at the Wildwood shore.  She also enjoyed traveling and was able take a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with her husband, brother, Larry and his wife, Eleanor and her daughter sponsored by St Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.  She was an avid Eagles Fan and loved the beach, shopping, crosswords and trips to Dairy Queen for her marshmallow sundaes.  She was always up for a competitive game of trains or Scrabble. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Harry Drain, Charles Drain and Lawrence Drain and a sister, Delores Flannery.In addition to her husband, Terry, Joanne is survived by children Robert B. Oncay (Karen) of Newark, Beth Brilla-Reta (Tom) of Woodbridge, NJ, Terrance W aka 2-E of Wilmington, RoseAnn Oncay-Steinbeiser (Eric) of Newark, Nadine B. Obituary Preview: Charles "Butch" Mellor, Jr. passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022, surrounded by his family.  He was 74 years old.Born in Darby, Pennsylvania on August 29, 1947 and raised in Media, Butch was the son of the late Charles W. Mellor, Sr. and the late Mary E. (nee Borden) Mellor.Butch was a 1966 graduate of Penncrest High School.  He honorably served our Country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  Butch was assigned to Company D, 40th Signal Battalion where he was stationed in An Khe, Chu Lai and Pho Ta, Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.  He embodied the essence of a true patriot.  He was a founding member of the neighborhood watch in Toby Farms and Chairman of a Youth Aid panel.  He was always willing to lend a hand and help family, friends and neighbors.  He enjoyed the outdoors, camping with the family, playing pool and taking care of his home and property.  Butch was as avid and skilled carpenter by profession. Upon retirement and most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren and watching his family spend time together from his bench.Butch was the beloved husband for 45 years of Nellie (nee Kokoszka) Mellor; father of Christopher Mellor (Leyna), Lauren Cruse (Miguel) and Eilleen Green (Dave); grandfather of CJ, Alyssa, Aubrey, Christian, Gi, Cody, MJ (his buddy), Amber and Brianna; great-grandfather of Noelle; brother of Johnny Mellor.  Also survived by many nieces and nephews and close friend, Louis C.In addition to his parents, Butch was predeceased by siblings, Carole Remington (George), Virginia "Ginger" McVaugh (Jimmy), Marylou Angelucci (Tony) and Charlotte "Chickie" Mellor (Mike).  Also predeceased by his beloved friends, Bill W. and John Rowan.Visitation with the family will be from 11:00AM until 1:00PM with a memorial service and U.S. Army military honors beginning at 1:00PM on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at the LONGWOOD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION of MATTHEW GENEREUX, 913 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.  Burial will be private.

Walton of Avondale, Pennsylvania passed away at his home on Sunday, March 27, 2022.  He was 86 years old.  Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania on March 28, 1935, he was the son of the late Herbert B. Walton and the late Mary McCombs.Raised in the Village of London Grove, Eddie attended London Grove Friends First Day School and was a graduate of Unionville H.S., class of 1953.  He worked on the family farm before beginning a 40 year career at Longwood Gardens as a Section Grounds Keeper.  Eddie was a lifetime member of the Longwood Fire Company, where he served on the Board as Financial Secretary and Delegate.  He coached baseball and basketball for URA in the early years of the organization, was active in the Unionville Community Fair and a member of Unionville Presbyterian Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and helped in maintaining the grounds.  Eddie enjoyed sports, especially Penn State and the Eagles.  He loved growing his garden and sharing with all his friends his crops, especially the pumpkins.He was the beloved husband of Jackie Warrick Walton for 62 years; father of Sherri Foster (Phil), Suzanne Testa (Robert) and Kathleen Walton-Laviani; grandfather of Tara Homer (Kevin), Tracy Walton (fiancé, Jim Suderley), Zach Walton, 1st Lt. Matthew Foster, Mackenzie Foster, Michael Testa, Dominic Testa, Kristina Testa, Garrett Ockun, Bennett Elizabeth Ockun and Louis Walton Laviani; great grandfather of Landon; brother of Peg Ogurcak (Tom).  Also survivied by many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his son, Steven Edward Walton.

Kozlowski, Sr.; her children, Barbara (Kenneth), Joseph (Beverly), Paul and Kenneth; her grandchildren, Meredith Arlene, Kenneth Robert, Joseph Patrick, Briana Sansouci, Paul Daniel Jr and Jessica Lee and one great-grandson, Walker Tate.  Also surviving are her siblings, Robert (Annette), Lenore (Thomas) and Edward (Marlene).  Arlene will also be dearly missed by her friends at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Unionville, PA, the Kennett Square Senior Center and the Ladybug Quilters.  Mrs. Kozlowski was a proud member of the Chester County (PA) Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.She was predeceased by her parents, Charles Dalley and Esther Bunk Dalley; sisters, Marion Dalley and Judith Dalley McGowan.Arlene was utterly and completely devoted to her family and by extension, to the friends and neighbors who quickly found themselves ‘adopted’ into the fold.  Food was central to all the family activities and Arlene’s baking skills were legend ~ creating Thanksgiving pies by the dozens and Christmas cookies by the thousands.  An avid quilter and award-winning craftswoman, Arlene was a prodigious sewer for many a fundraiser.  She also participated in the “Quilts of Valor” program and supported many fundraisers for her church and community through her sewing.The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of the neurology department at the University of Pennsylvania, the staff of Hospice of Bayada, Media, PA, the Rev. Obituary Preview: Joseph “Joe” Edward Dunn, Jr., beloved father, grandfather, brother-in-law, and uncle, passed away surrounded by his family in Pennsylvania on Friday, March 25, 2022.  He was 86 years old.Joe was born in November, 1935 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the only son of Joseph Edward and Ethel Magdalen (née Stoyack) Dunn.  He was the older brother to two sisters, Ann Marie Bunn and Georgina Dunn.  As a child, he liked to get lost in his books and explore the world through his camera.In 1957, he graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and started a career with Bendix Radio.  He worked there for five months before joining the Army and subsequently the Army Reserves.  While in the Reserves, he reentered the workforce and dedicated the majority of his career with Computer Science Corporation in support of NASA and the Goddard Space Flight Center in the orbit determination area.  There, he provided over 30 years of service and received several awards in recognition of his contributions, including the Silver Snoopy Award for “dedication and outstanding support that greatly enhanced space flight safety and mission success.”  He also completed two master’s degrees from George Washington University and Johns Hopkins University, respectively.During his career, he met the love of his life, Mary Laura Redmiles, and they got married in June 1964 at Saint Lawrence Church in Baltimore, Maryland.  Together, they built a beautiful life and family in West Laurel, Maryland.  Their love continues through their five daughters: Laura, Julie, Susan, Karen and Patricia, and seven grandchildren: Meghan, Steven, Sydney, Owen, Keira, Neve, and Gemma, all of whom referred to him fondly as “Poppy.” Joe and Mary were married over 50 years until Mary’s passing in 2016.  A year after her passing, he moved to Maris Grove retirement community in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.Joe was always devoted to his family and in his later years looked forward to the many visits from his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren.  He was a quiet soul with a lot of love to give. He will forever be our Poppy and he will be terribly missed.Joe is survived by his children, grandchildren, niece, Julie Bunn and goddaughter, Tamara Briggs.  Joe was predeceased by his wife, parents, sisters, sister-in-law, Nancy Self, and brothers-in-law, James Krotz and Bill Self.Joe’s memorial will be an intimate, immediate-family-only gathering.  A larger memorial will be scheduled at a later date.  The family will contact friends and family with further details.

Obituary Preview: Helen Connor, age 97, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2022, at her Brandywine Assisted Living at Longwood residence in Kennett Square, PA. She was a caring mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend.Helen was born and raised in Batavia, New York where she lived most of her life. Her years in college and her last few years in Kennett Square, PA were the only exception.Upon graduating from Batavia High School, Helen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Nazareth College in Pittsford, NY, followed by Registered Nursing and Master of Nursing degrees at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Prior to returning to Batavia, she completed post-graduate training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts where she also served as head of pediatric nursing. In 2018 Helen relocated to the Brandywine Living at Longwood assisted living community in Kennett Square, PA to be closer to her son, Jeb.Helen and her late husband, John H. Connor, married in 1948 and lived their adult lives together in Batavia, most of it at the home they built in the late 1950’s on Pickthorn Drive. Helen pursued her career as a registered nurse, nursing educator, and private nurse practitioner. John, upon returning from World War 2, pursued his career in journalism at the Batavia Daily News where for many years he was the Editor and Chief while also serving in many volunteer leadership roles in a wide range of community service, government, and economic development organizations. Helen and John were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and parish, the Batavia Club, Stafford Country Club, and were blessed with many wonderful lasting friendships throughout their lives.Helen was known for her devout faith in God; her commitment to nursing; her love of books, travel, antiques, the arts, and her home. Her conservative style and tastes, her fiercely independent demeanor, and her friendly and polite ways were attributes that made her who she was. In her later years, she was typically found buzzing around Batavia in her car interacting with, enjoying, and nurturing her wonderfully supportive network of friends and community “helpers” that were so sincerely and generously supportive of her needs and situation.Helen lives on in her son, Jeb Connor (Denise) in Kennett Square, PA, her grandson, Greg Connor (Jeannette) in Washington DC, and the many others she loved including her nieces, nephews, friends and caretakers.Helen was preceded in death by her parents William T. and Helen Bagley Maxwell, her sibling, William K. Maxwell (Gracia) and her loving husband of 51 years John H. Obituary Preview: The Life of Greg McCarthyOn March 4th, 2022, the world lost an amazing man, Gregory McCarthy, who passed suddenly in his home.  Greg (AKA –The pilot, entrepreneur, music man, Pop-Pop) is a cherished husband, father, grandfather, friend, instructor, coach, mentor, spiritual leader, and everything the world ever needed and needs today more than ever.  There is a rip in the fabric of everyone's life who had the opportunity to meet Greg and get to know him, which will take time to mend.Born February 22, 1946, in Albany, New York, Greg came from humble beginnings to eventually live in Plymouth Meeting and settle in Newtown Square, Media, and then, Chadds Ford Pennsylvania in Chester County, where he spent the rest of his adventurous life.Greg attended Villanova and Temple University, where he accomplished his undergrad and two master's degrees in education and marketing.  Greg put his educational, counseling, and marketing mind to work in the 1980s and the 1990s, co-founding Berkeley Computer Training with his wife, Sandy Mayer McCarthy.  Together, they built a well-known company accelerating the technology knowledge of thousands of persons before selling this firm in the.COM upswing.  In addition, Greg has held the positions of CEO, flight instructor, spiritual coach, personal trainer, career counselor, and most recently, musician and Pop-Pop to his four grandchildren.Greg signed up for Army service during the Vietnam War.  He quickly accelerated his passion for aviation, becoming a decorated Huey helicopter pilot saving countless lives, forever shaping the future of his life and that of his family.  War was an unfortunate necessity to an end. Still, it allowed him to pursue aviation as his core hobby, which shaped his life tremendously.Throughout his 76-year life, Greg enjoyed many hobbies.  Running, landscaping, Buddhism, flying, guitar, performing arts, swimming, reading, ice cream eating, and so much more. But few things define Greg as a human and soul more than flying.Greg amassed over 18,000 hours of flight time as a helicopter, corporate, and private pilot. To put that into perspective, that's representative of 4% of his entire time awake in the air. In addition, he gained hours as a corporate pilot for Allied Tanks, a flight instructor out of Wings Field, Perkiomen Valley, West Chester, and lastly, New Garden Airport (N57).  Greg owned several aircraft and built his life around flying.  It was his brand, his persona, and his ultimate passion.After Greg hung up his wings, he bought a Harley Davidson Deluxe and rode with his son Brian throughout the hills of Chester County.  He picked up the guitar simultaneously, perhaps in tribute to his eldest son, Michael, an accomplished musician himself.  A multi-tasking master, so why not? The motorcycle lasted a year or two, but guitar became his new path and adventure.  Greg quickly became the Music Man, playing bars, events, open-mic nights, and MCing local music events.In his later years, a softening occurred within Greg as a father to Loren and husband to Sandy.  Many nights were spent catching fireflies, taking sunset walks, and dancing together in the kitchen.  This reflection on his life allowed Greg to be present– often reminding everyone around him to feel gratitude for the people in our lives and our connection to the universe.Greg took on another role that he loved more than anything in the world, Pop-Pop.  So few people connected with children like Greg, and he loved getting down and engaged with children. Grandfather to Jameson, Olivia, Austin, and Emma, he just loved being with his grandchildren so much; we all cherished this time together.Greg LOVED to fly and always wanted to be in the clouds, wings spread wide, enjoying adventure and freedom and sharing it with everyone else.  But within that wingspan, he encompassed the world, our world, his family, hobbies, friends, life, and love shared with everyone.Today, that is where Greg is, running his pre-flight check, switching the mags, and throttling up for a new adventure, flying high, wings spread wide, sharing his love and legacy with us forever.Visitation with the family will be from 4:00PM until 6:00PM with a Celebration of Life service at 6:00PM on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at the LONGWOOD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION of MATTHEW GENEREUX, 913 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.  Burial will be private.Please consider NOT wearing suits, black clothes or funeral like attire, per the family wishes. Obituary Preview: Joan Herndon Hinz, died peacefully on March 2, 2022 at the age of ninety in Kennett Square, PA. Joan had a truly wonderful life, blessed throughout by family, adventure and the love of her devoted husband of 66 years, Carl Frederick “Fritz”, who predeceased her in 2019.  Joan was above all a giver, with a lifelong commitment to service, inclusivity and the well-being of others exemplified by her involvement in healthcare, church and community organizations, and the many lifelong friends she and Fritz formed are a testament to that quality.  She and Fritz had a remarkable and inspiring partnership and were avid travelers, healers, birders, gardeners, scholars, and dancers during their many wonderful years together.  Joan was born in 1931 in New York City to Katherine and Thomas Herndon and grew up in Douglaston and Flushing New York.  An only child, she was cared for by her beloved Grandmother “Ma” and excelled in school from an early age, attending Queens College and then Columbia University School of Nursing where she received her BSN in 1953.  While at Columbia she met and fell in love with a charming young physician, Fritz Hinz.  They secretly married before her training was finished as nursing students were not allowed to be married at that time.  After her graduation they moved to Cleveland Ohio where Fritz joined the faculty of Western Reserve School of Medicine.  In Cleveland Joan worked initially as a public health nurse for the VNA but following the birth of her four children she stayed home all the while maintaining her strong interest in nursing.  In 1965, Joan and Fritz embarked on the first of many significant adventures, taking their four young children to Sweden for a sabbatical year for Fritz.  The family sailed to Holland where a new VW van was waiting to be retrofitted by Fritz, then traveled and camped throughout Europe during their first summer.  Winter was spent in Stockholm and exploring Scandinavia then another summer of van camping in the British Isles before returning to the US.  This was very unusual at the time as few Americans traveled in this way and the experiences the family had were truly amazing.Upon returning to the U.S., Fritz accepted a position as a founding faculty member of the University of Connecticut’s new medical school and they moved to Avon Connecticut where they lived until moving to Kennett Square in 2008.  Connecticut was a wonderful place to raise their family and Joan and Fritz made many close friends both in the community and at the Medical Center.  In the early 70s Joan went back to school to advance her nursing credentials and received a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut to become one of the country’s first Nurse Practitioners.  She truly enjoyed clinical medicine and worked as a primary care practitioner in the Employee Student Health Service at UConn for many years, working down the hall from Fritz and with many of the same students.  Following retirement, Joan and Fritz focused on travel and adventures making lasting friends and connections in many different places and taking all their eleven grandchildren on international trips to make sure they had the same love of exploring the world.  Since their move to Pennsylvania, they found wonderful communities at both Kendal-Crosslands and Christ Church Christiana Hundred enjoying friendship, faith, and continued opportunities for service. Joan is survived by her four children, Betsy Howard (Steve), Richard (Rose Ho), Cathy McNally (Brian) and Gretchen Bartram (Darin);  plus eleven grandchildren, (Patrick, William, Grace, Mai, Colleen, Michael, Charlie, Jeremy, Abigail, Clara, and Edward) and many dear friends throughout the world.  Joan’s pride in her family was great and during the final years of her life they have been a constant presence and primary source of comfort as she found life without Fritz almost unbearable. We are so glad they are together again and can only imagine the joy of their reunion. Obituary Preview: Harold “Hal” S. Lowe Jr. of Kennett Square PA and formerly of Pennsville, NJ, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 surrounded by his wife and three children.Hal is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beth Lowe (nee Moskowitz); his children, Shawn Lowe (Amber), Heather Clark (David) and Ashley Davis (Lennon); his four grandsons, Spencer and Evan Lowe, Ace Davis and David Clark Jr; and his sister, Dottie Greene (Jim).Preceding him in death were his parents, Harold S. Lowe Sr. and Nellie McNichol Lowe; his sister, Carolyn Lunn and brother-in-law, Edwin Lunn.Hal was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He was an avid musician, singer, and collector of art and guitars.  He proudly served his country in the Vietnam War.  Hal loved travel, sports, concerts, and animals. He had a lifetime love of learning.He retired from PSEG after 25 years as a Senior Quality Assurance Manager.  He was an adjunct Professor for over 20 years and taught Advanced Information Technology at Wilmington University, where he also received his undergraduate and Master’s degrees. He was honored as valedictorian for his Master’s class.  He furthered his career at Unistar and Xerox as Director of Information Systems & Technology.Visitation with the family will be from 12:30PM until 1:00PM with a graveside service at 1:00PM on Sunday, March 6 2022 at the UNIONVILLE CEMETERY, Unionville Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348. {note: visitation will be at graveside}.
