Joseph G. Miramontes - June 01, 1916 - March 30, 2022

Departed: 03/30/2022 (Highland)
Obituary Preview: HIGHLAND, IN -- Joseph G. Miramontes, 105 years of age, passed away on March 30, 2022. Joseph is survived by his loving children: Alice, Mary and John Miramontes; his grandsons: Demian (Bridget) Bandera, Zachary Bandera and Jacob Miramontes; his great-grandchildren: Xavier, Maia, Piper, Atticus Bandera and Ryder, Jolene and Magnolia Miramontes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Agustina (Lopez) Miramontes and his sister Pauline (Miramontes) and brother-in-law Joseph Flores, and his son 'Joe' Junior. Joseph was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and a long time member of Our Lady of Guadalupe in East Chicago. He was an Army veteran of WWII and a retired electrician from Inland Steel Company with 45 years of service. Joseph was born in Huitzila, Zacatecas, Mexico in June, 1916. Emigrated to the Midwest with family as a young boy. Indiana Harbor is where Joseph and Agnes raised their family until moving to Highland. Joseph was a devout Catholic and lived a blessed life. Joseph has given his family his life-long gift of humor and curiosity. Dad's appetite for learning was evident from the time he was taught to read by one of his mother's boarders to the very end of his life. His willingness to learn new things served him well in the Army, where he served as a medic. This thirst followed him home to Indiana where while working at Inland Steel his supervisor noticed that spark in his eyes and suggested that he attended night school to become an electrician. Dad had a few hobbies in his life. He once set-up a dark room in our bathroom so he could develop his own black and white photos. Then there was the oscilloscope he assembled in the basement to view electrical voltages. And in his later years after retiring, he created our family tree on his computer. He stored all the data he uncovered on disks with the hopes that generations to follow would have easy access to this information about their ancestry. The grandsons realized their Grandfather's curious nature and would keep him abreast of all the latest technology in electronics, machinery and gadgets throughout the years. One experience my father would often recall was his day at Lake Front Beach where his eldest grandson let his grandfather play with his latest toy, a drone. Dad was beside himself in wonderment. Dad's secret to longevity was his insatiable thirst to learn and a few good jokes a day. We'll miss you dearly Dad.
