Ray Daniel Fulayter - November 08, 1971 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Chesapeake)
Obituary Preview: Ray was born on November 8, 1971, and left this world on March 4th, 2024. He was born in Watertown Wisconsin to Ray Fulayter (Sr.), and Sherrill Fulayter. He is survived by his parents Drs. Ray and Sherrill Fulayter; his elder sister, Ruth Middleton, along with her two children, Rivers and Karis Middleton; his younger brother, Dr. Roy Fulayter and his wife Katie, and their seven children, Gregory, Michael, Cooper, and Claire Fulayter, as well as Lincoln, Lily, and Lacy Lee; and his life partner Steven May.
Ray was a beloved friend, uncle, brother, son, and individual. He cared deeply for the people around him and showed that care in a myriad of ways. He was an excellent cook, and the memories of his meals will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of enjoying them. As much as good food, Ray adored good conversation. He always added a bit of spice to everything, his own unique flare and pizzazz. He was a highly opinionated man, who was not afraid to stand up for the things he believed in, and stand up for the people he cherished, or people who were unjustly wronged. He was very detail-oriented in everything he did, you would be hard-pressed to find a project that Ray worked on with unfinished or unthoughtful details; everything he did was done well, a trait instilled in him by his parents at a young age.
He loved to dress well. Ray valued the importance of looking good and feeling good. He enjoyed wearing clothes that filled him with confidence, like dress clothing, good suits, and nice slacks, but on his dress down days, you would often see him wearing his cat tee shirts. He loved his cat tee shirts. He also had a cat that lived to see 20 years, her name was Brianna. He absolutely adored Brianna and was devastated by her loss, but never forgot the dear companionship she brought to him.
Ray loved decorating. His decorating skills surpassed many individuals decorating skills by a mile. He loved making things look beautiful for the season, always bringing so much cheer around the holidays, and enhancing every event with his attention to detail and warm smile.
Ray was also a very sassy individual. He was the sass master. If he didn’t like something, you were going to know about it and understand every detail of the injustices he was facing. He would often make up hilarious names accompanying strangers who gave him minor inconveniences, making anyone around him snort with a common recognition of the irritants of the small things. He wouldn’t take any form of injustice given to him by people who thought it was okay to be rude just for the sake of it and would retort and hand it back to those who truly deserved it. He was someone who wouldn’t let those individuals be rude without thinking twice, and for that, he probably changed some people’s opinions about behaving rudely for no reason. He stood up for people, and always wanted those who were picked on to feel like they had a voice. He had no tolerance for any perceived abuses, and that made him someone with a quick temper to anyone who crossed those boundaries.
He loved gardening. Everything about gardening he learned from his father, who taught him many things. He kept a garden until the day he left us, always planting new flowers and appreciating the beauty he could cultivate with each passing season.
He loved music; he had a large record collection, and enjoyed listening to records while cleaning or cooking. Ray dedicated himself to the care of his home.
Ray would often pray as well, and talk to God about his life, family, and struggles.
For the last two months of his life, he was able to assist with life challenges in the home of his parents and was a wonderful team player. He was able to nurture a close relationship with his parents, sister, and nieces. This was a great joy as he was in the home multiple times a week, helping with things like groceries, sorting out files, and other tasks that needed to be done. He did all of this without complaint, and even pulled the family together more in the face of challenges, a shining star, when everyone was struggling.
Ray wanted to own a restaurant, called Fire Water Ray’s. He wanted to put his recipes into that restaurant for all to enjoy, as well as creating a stage for fine art performers. He loved the fine arts and had a collection of artful cats gifted to him by his sister. Along with his love of fine arts, he enjoyed traveling. He and his partner Steven frequently visited many places in the United States, always sharing pictures of their journeys with family and friends. He and Steven also had a goal to visit Wendy’s in all fifty states, as imparted to them by his nieces.
Ray was a giver of unique and wonderful gifts. He never failed to delight and bring joy with the thought that he poured into the things he gave as presents. But the best thing he gave us was his presence. Though he could talk your ear off about his latest inconveniences, he was always a great listener. If you ever had any kind of issue, you could always rely on Ray to listen to you, and offer great advice, and make space and time for you. He always made you feel heard, loved, and accepted. He really was a Ray of Light.
There will be a viewing held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 2 to 5 pm at Graham Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. A service to celebrate his life will be on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 1 pm also at the funeral home and will be officiated by Dr. James Baker. Captain John Michael Krupa - September 18, 1954 - February 14, 2024

Departed: 02/14/2024 (Chesapeake)
Obituary Preview: Captain John Michael Krupa, United States Coast Guard (retired) crossed the bar on 14 February 2024, at Select Specialty Hospital, Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 69 with his brother and sister-in-law at his side. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Stephen Krupa, Capt, USCG (retired) and Diane Durham, Capt, USCG (retired) of Potomac, Maryland, and his dear friend Sherri Peele of Chesapeake, Virginia.
John was born September 18, 1954, in New London, Connecticut. A son of Stephen Krupa and Florence Strazza Krupa, predeceased. He graduated from New London High School in 1972. He graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management, and was commissioned an Ensign.
For the next 30 years he served his country faithfully, reaching the rank of Captain (O-6). He retired in 2006 and settled in Chesapeake, Virginia. At his retirement ceremony the presiding Admiral remarked that John’s career reminded him of the movie Forrest Gump in that John always seemed to be in the thick of things.
John was a Cutterman, with over 13 years of sea duty on eight different Coast Guard cutters, commanding four of them. His first assignment was as Operations Officer on United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) IRIS in Astoria, Oregon; along with search and rescue, this cutter primarily serviced aids to navigation along that portion of the west coast. Then he moved to Charleston, South Carolina and took command of USCGC CAPE MORGAN and then USCGC CAPE KNOX. Those cutters were involved in a number of search and rescue and law enforcement operations. Several cases involved working with U.S. Customs Service in the seizure of vessels trying to smuggle narcotics.
Moving ashore he was assigned to the Fifth Coast Guard District Rescue and Coordination Center in Portsmouth, VA, responding to search and rescue incidents utilizing various Coast Guard and sometimes Department of Defense assets. For example, as a Senior Controller he was involved in coordinating rescue efforts during the sinking of the SS MARINE ELECTRIC, as well as supporting the subsequent Coast Guard Marine Casualty Report and investigation. That case ultimately led to the requirement for vessels to carry immersions suits, and the establishment of the Coast Guard’s Rescue Swimmer program.
His next assignment was as Operations Officer on USCGC MUNRO in Honolulu, Hawaii. During this tour of duty, the cutter was involved in a number of search and rescue and law enforcement cases in the Pacific and Bering Sea. Most notably was the search for the wreckage of Korean Airlines Flight 007, a civilian airliner shot down by Soviet jets in 1983 west of Sakhalin Island. This airliner carried 269 passengers and crew including a U.S. Congressman. MUNRO spent sixty days on scene along with Korean, Japanese, U.S. Navy, and Soviet vessels.
John then went to graduate school and earned his MBA from The College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia. From there he was assigned to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. working on various aspects of the overall Coast Guard budget.
Sea assignment again followed; he became the Executive Officer on USCGC CHEROKEE in Norfolk, Virginia, and then Executive Officer on USCGC ESCANABA in Boston, Massachusetts. Both cutters primary missions were law enforcement, migrant interdiction, and search and rescue along the Atlantic coast and Caribbean Sea. Following those tours, he became the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations, Coast Guard Caribbean Squadron, in Miami, Florida. There he was deployed on various U.S. Navy ships and Coast Guard cutters conducting counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.
He soon moved back to Boston, Massachusetts, as Commanding Officer of USCGC ESCANABA. Again, the focus of the cutter’s duties were law enforcement, migrant interdiction, and search and rescue operations in the Atlantic and Caribbean. This required he coordinate some activities with the U.S. Navy, and foreign governments. During his tenure, the cutter seized various vessels for narcotics smuggling in the Caribbean, and fisheries violations in the Georges Bank portion of the North Atlantic.
His management skills then led him to be the Comptroller for the Coast Guard Aircraft Repair and Supply Center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. There he managed a team of 120 personnel handling all aspects of aviation logistics for the entire Coast Guard involving a budget of over $140M (1996 dollars), and an inventory of over 37,000-line items valued at over $650M.
He was then assigned as Commanding Officer of USCGC HAMILTON in San Pedro, California, and supervised its homeport change to San Diego, California. He conducted several law enforcement patrols in the Western Pacific, Eastern Pacific, and Bering Sea. A notable event during this assignment was the seizure of the Russian Factory Trawler GISSAR for illegally fishing in U.S. waters off the Aleutian Islands. During this incident, 19 Russian trawlers surrounded HAMILTON, and threatened to ram HAMILTON to prevent the GISSAR from being seized. As played on CNN, the GISSAR’s Captain asked Captain Krupa if he was trying to “start World War III”, to which John replied “I don’t want to start World War III”. Due to his negotiation skills, and after high level USA and Russian discussions, the vessel was eventually taken into custody by a Russian Federal Border Guard vessel.
That was John’s last afloat assignment. He was then transferred to Portsmouth, Virginia and assumed the duties as Chief, Operations Oversight and Management for Commander, Atlantic Area. There he was the principal advisor and planner for operations involving counter-drug operations, alien migrant interdiction, fisheries enforcement, and international engagement operations. During this posting, the September 11, 2001 attacks occurred, and John was heavily involved in all aspects of the Coast Guard’s response during that time.
John’s last two years of service was as the Chief, Finance Division, Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic, Norfolk, Virginia. This assignment proved equally challenging in that his staff was required to respond to hurricanes KATRINA and RITA in support of first responders needs such as obtaining berthing, messing, fuel, mobile communications, personal protective equipment, oil spill and hazardous material cleanup services, and salvage services to clear navigable waters.
During his career Captain Krupa was awarded eighteen individual medals and ribbons, several multiple times. Most notably were the Legion of Merit medal, three Meritorious Service Medals with Operational Distinguishing Devices, six Commendation Medals with Operational Distinguishing Devices, one DOT 9-11 Medal Military Ribbon, and one Achievement Medal with Operational Distinguishing Device.
John chose not to work after his retirement.
In accordance with his wishes, Captain Krupa will be cremated, and his ashes dispersed at sea from a Coast Guard cutter.
