Carl F. Kirner - January 19, 1936 - March 05, 2024

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Houlton)
Obituary Preview: Carl F. Kirner, 88, passed away surrounded by family, March 5, 2024, in Caribou. He is now resting peacefully with the love of his life, Nina Kirner, his wife of 31 years. Born to Carl and Charlotte (Parks) Kirner, January 19, 1936, in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin.
After high school, Carl joined the U.S. Air Force in July of 1953, and retired in July of 1973, at the rank of Master Sergeant stationed at the Loring Air Force base in Limestone. Following retirement, Carl fell in love with Aroostook County and decided to call it home, continuing to work at York Ford in Houlton, and United States Customs as an Immigration Officer in Bridgewater/Houlton.
Carl loved being involved directly with his community. He volunteered at the Houlton Community Golf Course and was a member of the Houlton Lodge of Elks #835 for many years. He and Nina spent countless hours golfing and enjoying their time together at the Houlton Community Golf Course and many golf courses in Florida. Carl's passions may have been for the military and serving his community, but what he loved most was his family. Anytime you were able to talk to him about his children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, you could guarantee "Papa" had a smile on his face. Ryan and Jared, his grandsons, held a very special place in his heart. They spent a lot of time with "Papa,'' from going out to camp with him as children, to driving across the country from Colorado with him a little over a year ago. He adored his time spent with them, as well as the rest of his family throughout his life. Carl was certainly a "one of a kind" man, devoted family man, and "tough soldier". his dedication, love, and passion for the people he held dear will be a loss felt by many.
In addition to his parents, Carl was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis Thomas; wife, Nina; and their beloved daughters, Debbie Varney, and Wanda Folsom.
He is survived by his brother, Robert Kirner; sister, Carol Jopp; daughter, Beth Sylvia and husband, Charlie, of Houlton; grandchildren, Ryan Sylvia and Samantha Kearney, of Mapleton, Amanda Varney, of Waterville, Jared and Melissa Sylvia, of Houlton, and Michelle and Levi Slike, of Hampden; in-laws, Wayne and Maxine Farrar and Richard and Maureen McQuarrie; many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. The "lights of his life," his great-grandchildren, Madelyn Sylvia, Calli Sylvia, Rylee Sylvia, Michael Fitzpatrick, Mylee Sylvia, Averi Sylvia, Wyatt Sylvia, Eliana Slike, Abel Pooler, and Aria Pooler. A graveside service will be held at the Northern Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at a later date for family and close friends. Donations in Carl’s honor may be made to Bridge to Hope, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St. Houlton, ME 04730. Condolences may be expressed at DunnFuneral.com

Estela G. Lane - February 21, 1952 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Houlton)
Obituary Preview: With heavy, tired, but ultimately relieved hearts, we announce that Estela G. Lane concluded her battle with ALS March 4, 2024, at the age of 72. She was born February 21, 1952, to Raymond and Henrietta Gutierrez in Pecos, Texas.
Estela is survived by her husband, Michael; her three sons, Gabriel, Jesse, and Andrew; grandchildren, Silas, Sanne, and Eneko; brothers, Gilbert, Ray Jr. (Buddy), and Joseph (Sonny); and three daughters-in-law, Kirsten, Kelly, and Kristin. Her family is at peace knowing she is at home with her parents and brothers in the arms of the Lord.
At 1 year old, her family, including seven brothers, Jerry, Johnny, Gilbert, Joe, Buddy, Sonny, moved to Michigan, where she later met her life-long best friend, Kim, and her husband, Michael.
Fed up with the hustle and bustle of city life, they drove cross-country to rural Linneus, Maine, to start their new life together. From a humble yurt with goats and chickens to their ever-growing home on the hill, nestled on the doorstep of the Maine wilderness, Estela built her life with Michael through sweat, hard work, and untempered love.
To say Estela was dedicated would be a discredit to the essence of her being. Estela graduated from UMPI with a degree in social work, then proceeded to devote thirty-two years to elder and adult protective services at the Department of Health and Human Services. She had a tireless passion in advocacy for and service to others, never accepting a drop until every other soul had their share. Her commitment to others radiated into all aspects of her community, serving on the school board for Hodgdon MSAD 70 for fifteen years and for the Linneus Rec. Center Little League and CLA. Estela’s father Raymond was a critical part of the UMOI, the United Migrant Opportunity Services Incorporated, wherein he helped migrants secure jobs, file taxes and establish themselves in the United States. Estela credited her father Raymond for her drive to serve others through her dedication to social work.
It is this same dedication to her work that tilled and nurtured the soil of her family. Despite how much she poured into her work, there was always far more left in reserves to give to her boys and, eventually, to her grandchildren and daughters-in-law. No occasion or holiday went uncelebrated, no achievement left unhonored, nor tears left on a cheek that could be kissed away. She was more than loving; she set the standard for love and compassion that we may only attempt to emulate for our own families. Choosing a picture for her obituary was nearly impossible, as there are almost no photographs of her sitting still, not laughing, or alone. This loving veneer was, of course, completely stripped away by her bloodthirsty tactics when it came to family games around the kitchen table. Hearts, Canasta, Up and Down the River, even Uno and Skip-Bo; no game was safe from the Scorpion Queen, not even those for 6 and up.
Her absence will be painful, but she taught all of us in so many ways how to fill the hole she left behind. Her presence will follow us in the pieces of her we take with us, sitting on the ofrenda in our hearts every day. We miss you mom, the same today as we will next year and those after. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 1-2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Houlton Wesleyan Church, 18 Kelleran St. Houlton, where a service will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Wayne Robertson officiating. Estela requested that donations in her memory be made to the Aroostook House of Comfort, or CCALS, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St. Houlton, ME 04730. Condolences, stories, and words of remembrance can be expressed at DunnFuneral.com

Emma’s heart to give and serve is marked by years of support and involvement with the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion where she served as 7th District President; and worked tirelessly with her daughter Mary to support our Veterans with annual poppy drive sales; as well as crocheting countless of the most beautiful and artful afghans which she supplied to various Veteran organizations, as well as to family and friends everywhere. The handiwork she bestowed was a blessing indeed!

Betty will be sorely missed by all her family and her many, many, friends. One of her favorite hymns “I’ll Fly Away” played during her final moments. Eleanor “Ellie” Campbell - July 21, 1923 - December 20, 2023

Departed: 12/20/2023 (Houlton)
Obituary Preview: Eleanor “Ellie” Campbell, 100, passed away after a very brief decline in her health on December 20, 2023, at the Aroostook House of Comfort in Presque Isle – with peace and serenity while surrounded by her family just as she hoped she would. She was born July 21, 1923, in Monticello, the eldest of 3 children to Glendon M. Horne and Bertha Kinney Horne. Over her 100 years, there were countless changes and upheavals. One she didn’t speak often about was her role in WWII which began the year she graduated from Bridgewater Classical Institute 1941. In 1943, she went to work in the South Portland Shipyard to do her part for the war effort. Later in life, she would tell family about what that war looked like from home and just how much life changed because of it - even in the small town of Monticello. She returned home in 1945 to help her family here where she met Gerald Campbell and they married in 1947. They started their life together as farmers and she continued to show her true grit by slinging as many potato barrels around as any of the farm hands and seamlessly running the home at the same time. Later, she went to work in retail at Lads ‘n Lassies Clothing in Houlton where she worked for 20 years retiring in 1991. Ellie always made friends wherever she went and nurtured those relationships her whole life including “the original” McDonald’s coffee group, card parties, her apartment friends on North Street and writing letters and cards - lots and lots of cards! She celebrated her 100th birthday in July in grand style and more stamina than most half her age with nearly 200 people in attendance. It truly was the time of her life
She is survived by her three children, Carl Campbell and his wife, Brenda, of Cary, along with their children, Heidi (Chad) Ouellette, and Lisa (Jim) Gravel; Tammy Ritchie and her husband, Doug, of Houlton, along with their children, Lucus (Mish) Ritchie and Natasha (Blake) McCarthy; Sharon Campbell and her partner, Dave Wood, of Houlton, along with her daughter, Eleanor St. Peter; her 9 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren had the blessing of knowing how spry and engaged you can be with your family even as you age. She loved each of her children and their families with deep devotion and pride. Her children would constantly hear the compliments she would say about them from friends always followed by “I just love your mother”. We did too. She will be dearly missed as well by several nieces and nephews and her dedicated and loving home care support services professionals.
In addition to her parents, Ellie was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Campbell; and her two siblings, Willis Horne and Joyce Horne Stackpole.
The family would like to thank the staff at Houlton Regional Hospital for their care before she was transported to the Aroostook House of Comfort in Presque Isle for the beautiful attention and comfort provided.
Those wishing to acknowledge Ellie’s many gifts in this life may do so to Aroostook House of Comfort P.O. Box 867 Presque Isle, ME 04769 or at aroostookhouseofcomfort.org. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 12 – 1 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2023, at Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St. Houlton, where a Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Interment will be held in spring 2024.
