Clifford W. Perrin - June 04, 1955 - March 14, 2022

Departed: 03/14/2022 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Clifford Wesley Perrin was born in San Diego, California on June 4, 1955, to the union of William Wesley Perrin and Florestine Williams. He was the last of eleven children: Joe, Betty, Arthur, Ida, Charles, Sue, Janet, Jackie, Belinda, Marsha, and Clifford. Clifford was lovingly called Wesley by many relatives and friends. Clifford attended Stockton Elementary, Memorial Junior High, and graduated from San Diego High School, Class of 1973. He continued his education at San Diego Community College for two years.
Clifford worked for many years as a Carrier for Emery and later worked for DHL. He often talked about all the wonderful people that he worked with that became like family. Clifford went on to be employed for 17 years as a Route Service Representative for Quest Diagnostics, retiring in August 2021.
In August 1994, Clifford married the love of his life, Melissa Politte, and this union produced two children, Asia Ja’Lacie and Emon Alyse Perrin. Clifford was a loving and caring husband, and a wonderful father.
Clifford received the Lord of his life many years ago; he would often say it was “the best thing that ever happened” to him. He went on to get baptized at Coronado Beach. His walk with the Lord was very transparent: he would share the love of Christ with all he met. Clifford and his family were members of Crosspointe Life Church for the past sixteen years, joining under Pastor Barry Sappington and serving the past six years under the leadership of Pastor Craig Osborne. Clifford loved his pastors.
Clifford served as an usher and greeter at Crosspointe. Every person that walked through the door was greeted with a big smile. He also made sure to greet every child, making them feel comfortable and welcome. Clifford loved the children, and all the children knew and loved “Mr. Cliff.” Clifford also served, alongside his wife Melissa, distributing food to the community residents and ministering to young men.
Clifford was a gentle giant. He was loved and made friends everywhere he went. He loved his family deeply. His two girls were his world. He would often say, “Love God, Love People,” and always lived his life that way. He was very humble, sweet, and spirit filled. Clifford loved to barbecue, and he loved his football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. You would find him, at any given Sunday, watching his Steelers, shouting, and talking to the television about the plays that could have been avoided. He loved “The Steelers.”
On March 14, 2022, Clifford transitioned and joined his parents and his siblings, Joe Williams, Betty McNamee, Arthur Williams, Ida Moore, Charles Williams, Jackie Rayford, Belinda Richardson, Marsha Brown, and Sue Armstrong.
Clifford Wesley Perrin is survived by: his wife, Melissa Perrin; his daughters, Asia and Emon; his sister, Janet McClellan; his best friend and “brother,” Greg Monroe; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.

Moses James Hatcherson - September 11, 1943 - January 29, 2022

Departed: 01/29/2022 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Moses James Hatcherson, was born on September 11, 1943, in Baldwin, Louisiana; the third child, and second son of Albert and Dorothy Hatcherson. Growing up in a strict Christian home, Sunday School and church attendance was a must. Moses accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age and was baptized by Rev. C.E. Batiste at Special Providence Baptist Church. He became part of the music ministry, and with his melodious voice, he often sang “How Great Thou Art” and would bless the congregation. You could tell he knew the One he sang about. Moses would often help his grandmother who lived alone, and needed physical assistance from the family, oftentimes spending nights with her. She must have seen God’s Spirit in him and told him on many an occasion he would one day be a preacher. Moses was an obedient child; he went to school at Baldwin Negro Elementary School and graduated from Willow Street High School in Franklin, LA. He had a desire to play football, but with his mother fearing he would get hurt, made the decision to sign up and join the Navy.
He joined the Navy in 1963. While attending a wedding, he met and married the love of his life, Jeanette Sinegal; they were married on April 11, 1964. To this union, one child was born, Stephanie Renee. After 4 years in the Navy, he retired and immediately started working for Pacific Southwest Airlines and worked for the company, even after they were bought by US Airways as a machinist. He prided himself in doing the job correctly the first time. After 32 years he retired from Us Airways.
Moses initially was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church but joined Jeanette to service at Greater Trinity Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. Feeling the call to serve elsewhere, he left Greater Trinity and began attending Encanto Southern Baptist Church for two years, sitting in the back, until the Holy Spirit nudged him and he became a member on February 6, 1983. His family soon followed him and began to serve in the ministry there. But the Holy Spirit wasn’t done nudging; Moses accepted and followed the call to become an ordained minister during the summer of 1985. Moses served at Encanto in the Sunday School Department as a teacher, VBS director, participated in various choirs at the church, played softball on the church team, worked with the Brotherhood. Whatever was needed at the church, he was there to help. He had a strong bond with elder members, Bro. Charles Endsley and Deacon Richard Hilliard. He also worked mentoring other men of God at the New Hope Friendship Baptist Church on Saturdays.  He also led a convalescent ministry at Brighton Place. Under the guidance of Pastor Don E. Conley, Moses accepted the call to start a church mission out in San Ysidro. Under the leadership of Pastor Hatcherson, many were saved, taught, and discipled through the ministries of San Ysidro Southern Baptist Mission. In 2003, the mission shut down, but the work continued back at Encanto where Moses continued to inspire souls to seek a life in Christ. He served in the Men of the Word; he loved singing praises to God. He was also involved in the School of Theology as a member of the Board of Directors and as one of the school’s professors. It was his joy to provoke conversation from the brethren.
When his health wouldn’t allow him to share the gospel with others, he would call people to encourage them to keep up the fight. On January 29, 2022, the Lord called him home to rest. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Jeanette, his parents, Albert and Dorothy Hatcherson, his brothers, Albert Phillip Hatcherson (Lucille), Nathaniel (Balladette) Hatcherson, his sisters, Ida Mae Moton, and Alzena Guy (Charles). He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his daughter, Stephanie Thomas, 3 grandchildren, Antonio Harris, Devin, and Eryca Thomas, two sisters, Alice Reed (James) and Brenda Prejean (Paul), nieces, nephews, cousins, a host of family and friends who will miss him, his counsel, his singing, his preaching, and his teaching. “Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.” Psalm 73:24 “Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”

Nina O. Jones - May 08, 1929 - December 06, 2021

Departed: 12/06/2021 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Nina Opal Jones was born May 8, 1929, to James and Myrtle Lee, as the middle child of three, in Shreveport, Louisiana. The family moved to San Diego, California in 1942. She graduated San Diego High School in 1943 at the young age of 14. Nina went to Bishop College in Texas, but transferred and graduated from San Diego State College in 1948. She then started at UCLA Grad School that summer.
While staying with Esther Durham, or Ms. Esther, she learned about Jehovah and enjoyed what she heard. Nina is quoted as saying, “I had some choices to make, my parents were all for education. I was taught to reason and make informed choices. In 1949, I was baptised a Jehovah’s Witness. I believe that this is the religion for educated people, not educated in book learning. But educated people’s minds learn to reason, are taught to think.” Her parents were not happy and stopped supporting her education. Nina persevered, and started working at Juvenile Hall for County of San Diego, as the first African American female youth counselor, which made her parents happy. They rewarded her in 1955, by paying for her trip to attend the European portion of the “Triumphant Kingdom” Convention Tour with Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Nina married Robert Jones in August 1956 and they had 5 children.* She switched jobs and became an adult educator, from the 1970’s to the early 2000’s, when she stopped teaching. Along the way during the 1980’s, she got a Master’s of Education degree. During this time period, she enjoyed Auxiliary pioneering every chance she got.
As many know, Nina O loved to travel and her saying was: “Travel while you can, not when you can.” Nina O took her children, her grandchildren, and sometimes other people's children everywhere, but always attending meetings, assemblies, or conventions and going in field service, why? Because “You never take a break from Jehovah.” Over the years, her travels took her to six continents, meeting and acquiring many friends that serve Jehovah, strengthening that bond with Him. Travel was one of several hobbies she had. Playing pinochle on Sunday nights, sitting in the sun reading, in fact she made it her goal to read the entire Bible, until her vision grew dim, then she listened to the audio recording of the Bible. Collecting teapots from around the world, or playing scrabble with family, friends, or herself. Any accomplishments by the family were displayed on the front door for all to see.
Nina’s generosity knew no bounds, as she followed Proverbs 3:27, Do not withhold good from those to whom should give it If it is within your power to help. As examples some received monetary gifts for a time, others one time gifts. Some Nina would spiritually help to recover. For decades, she volunteered her home for meetings for service and hosted foriegn delegates any time she could. Mom loved peppermint stick ice cream from Niederfrank’s so much, she would donate their ice cream to pioneer school each year and Kingdom Hall builds.

Passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 26, 2021, in Phoenix, AZ surrounded by the love of his mother, Elizabeth Newton, father, LeRoy Newton Jr., sisters, Rachael (Newton) Mennes, Emily Newton, and partner, Ana Clara. He is survived in death by his wife Micah, and children Dylan and Serena. Brother-in-law Jerry Mennes, nieces Maxine and Vivian, Maternal Grandmother Bonnie LaBarre, Paternal Grandmother Rita Newton as well as a many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. Preceded in death by Maternal Grandfather Donald LaBarre and Paternal Grandfather LeRoy Newton Sr.
Ray attended Glenbard North High School graduating class of 2004. In his childhood years Ray spent time riding bikes, skateboarding, playing in the creeks, playing baseball, and spent summers swimming at the pool.
Ray enlisted in the United States Navy in 2007 where he completed bootcamp at Great Lakes Naval Base. Ray’s first duty station was in Yokosuka, Japan aboard the USS Curtis Wilbur DDG 54 from 2007- 2013. While serving Ray completed many missions and humanitarian efforts, one of which was as a first responder in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The epicenter in the Pacific Ocean occurred east of the Oshika Peninsula of the Tohoku region. The tsunami caused the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, primary meltdowns of three reactors caused the discharge of radioactive water in the Fukushima and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundreds of thousands of residents. Residents within a 12-mile radius were evacuated.
During his time on the USS Curtis Wilbur DDG 54 Ray was capped to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class and received the Admiral Zumwalt Award for Visionary Leadership. The Zumwalt award winners are nominated by subordinates or peers and receive an endorsement from their command. Each year there are 2 winners from the entire United States Navy. As Ray’s time was ending on the USS Curtis Wilbur, Dylan was born on August 21, 2012, in Yokosuka, Japan.
With a brand-new family member, he was then transferred to Port Operations White Beach Okinawa operating small boats providing security and oil spill response and where he discovered his passion for diving. Ray also spent 2 weeks with his family in February 2013 so Grandma and Grandpa and Aunties could meet our new family member. During that trip Ray visited every tourist spot on the island so that we would not miss one thing. He also was a part of an Okinawan traditional dragon boat racing team and was accepted as a local while stationed in White Beach made one of the hardest and most beautiful dives someone can make to see the Yonaguni Submarine Ruins. It was his time spent in Japan and traveling during his deployments that further developed his passion for traveling. Shortly before Ray’s shore duty was ending, Serena was born on August 13, 2015, in Okinawa, Japan. When Serena was six months old, Ray and the family traveled home to Chicago for oldest sister Rachael’s wedding in October 2015.
After growing his family again, and Ray’s shore tour ended he took orders in February 2016 to the USS Spruance DDG 111 stationed in San Diego, California, bringing him back stateside. During his deployment to the middle east with the USS Spruance he was nominated and received his second Admiral Zumwalt award. Ray is the only two-time winner of the Admiral Zumwalt award to date.  He was then subsequently advanced to First Class Petty Officer. After his sustained superior performance as the Deck Division Leading Petty Officer, he was then selected for the rate of Chief Boatswain’s Mate in September of 2019, a title that fewer than one percent of enlisted Sailors are able to achieve. Shortly after being selected to Chief, he was given orders to transfer to shore duty. BMC Newton’s current assignment was Leading Chief Petty Officer of Code 911, Rigging and Weight Test Shop, Southwest Regional Maintenance Center.
While Ray had a most impressive Naval career, he was a Sailors Sailor. His two greatest accomplishments are his children Dylan and Serena. Ray blossomed as a dad, loving and kind instilling hard work and kindness above all else. He was patient, made sure the kids were his top priority, he was the fun Dad.
Ray was always up for anything. There is nothing he would not try. Surfing, local delicacies in foreign countries, getting diamonds in his teeth in Thailand, cliff diving, listening to any music, camping, hiking, white water rafting, sky diving, diving with whale sharks, playing under waterfalls, visiting tourist spots across the globe. Ray was a true world traveler. Ray would help anyone that needed it. If you needed help moving a couch Ray was there, if you needed a place to live Ray was there. He would give you the shirt off his back (if he had one on).
Ray lived life to the fullest above all he loved his children.

1. Difference Between Obituaries and Death Notices

Though the two are often used interchangeably, obituaries and death notices are different. A death notice is a paid announcement in a newspaper or online platform. It details the death and funeral arrangements, with an optional brief tribute. An obituary goes a step further, providing a detailed biography of the deceased, and often appears in print media for free.

California Cremation and Burial Obituaries Example:

Imagine a well-beloved local teacher, Mrs. Jane Smith, has unfortunately passed away. To commemorate her because she had touched the lives of so many, her family decides to write an obituary, breaking it down into sections: personal information, family history, career, community involvement, personal anecdotes, and details about the memorial service. Eulogy Assistant enables them to weave a heartwarming narrative detailing her dedication to teaching and the lives she’s impacted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of an obituary in the context of cremation or burial?

An obituary serves as a formal announcement of an individual’s death, providing details about their life, achievements, and information about the cremation or burial services. It's a way to honor the deceased and inform the community of their passing, as well as to announce memorial or funeral arrangements.

How do I submit an obituary in California?

Obituaries can be submitted to local newspapers, online memorial sites, or funeral homes. The submission process often involves providing a written obituary and possibly a fee depending on the publication. Always check with the specific publication for their submission guidelines and deadlines.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

Typically, an obituary will include the deceased's full name, date of birth, date of death, a brief summary of their life, information about the family members they're survived by, and details concerning the time and place of the memorial service, burial, or cremation.

Can I write and design the obituary myself?

Yes, you can write and design the obituary yourself. Many people choose to personalize obituaries to reflect the unique life and personality of their loved one. However, you should be mindful of the publication's guidelines regarding length and format.

Is it necessary to include a cause of death in the obituary?

No, including the cause of death is not necessary unless the family wishes to share this information. The focus is typically on celebrating the life of the deceased rather than the details of their passing.

What is the average cost of publishing an obituary in California?

The cost varies widely depending on the publication's pricing structure, the length of the obituary, and whether photos or additional features are included. Prices can range from a nominal fee to several hundred dollars. Contact specific publications for their rates.

How long after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is commonly published within a week after death to allow enough time for the community to be informed and make arrangements to attend services. However, the time frame can vary based on personal preference and the requirements of the chosen publication.

What if my loved one didn’t want a funeral or memorial service?

An obituary can still be published to announce the passing and celebrate the life of your loved one, even if there are no services planned. You may also mention donations to a charity in lieu of services, if that aligns with your loved one's wishes.

Is an obituary required by law in California?

No, there is no legal requirement to publish an obituary in California or any other state. It is a matter of personal choice for the family.

Can friends contribute to writing the obituary?

Yes, friends can contribute stories, memories, and facts to the writing of an obituary. Their contributions can add depth and personal touch to the announcement.

What should I do if I find an error in an obituary that has already been published?

Contact the publication where the obituary appeared as soon as possible. Most will correct significant errors and may republish the corrected obituary in the next issue or update the online version.

Is it possible to have a cremation or burial without an obituary?

Yes, it is possible. There is no requirement for an obituary for cremation or burial services to take place. It is entirely up to the family and the wishes of the deceased.

How can I ensure that my loved one's obituary reaches those who knew them?

Publish the obituary in local newspapers where the deceased lived and worked, and consider online memorial platforms and social media for broader reach. You can also personally notify friends and family members who may want to read the obituary.

What are some common cremation and burial traditions in California?

California is diverse in its cultural practices; however, common traditions include holding a wake or viewing, a funeral or memorial service, and either cremation or traditional burial. Some may also choose natural or green burials, sea scattering for ashes, or incorporating specific cultural rituals.

How can I personalize a cremation or burial service?

Personalizing a service can include choosing music, readings, or decorations that reflect the person's interests and personality, displaying photographs, or having attendees share their memories. The type of urn or casket, as well as the location for the service, can also be personalized.

Are eco-friendly burial options available in California?

Yes, eco-friendly options such as biodegradable caskets or urns, conservation burials, and natural burials that do not use traditional embalming fluids are available in California.

In California, there must be a waiting period of at least 48 hours after death before the body can be cremated. A cremation authorization form must be completed by the next of kin, and permits from the county health department are required. These regulations help ensure that all cremations are conducted respectfully and lawfully.

Can I pre-plan my own cremation or burial?

Yes, you can pre-plan your cremation or burial by making arrangements with a funeral home or cremation service. This can include selecting services, deciding on disposition, and handling financial arrangements in advance.

Are obituaries made public online in California?

Many obituaries are made public online, through newspaper websites, funeral home pages, and dedicated memorial platforms. This ensures that the information is accessible to a broader audience, including those who live far away.

What support is available for writing an obituary in California?

Funeral homes often offer obituary writing support, providing templates or full writing services. There are also professional obituary writers and online resources that offer guidance and assistance in crafting a meaningful tribute.

How do people commonly handle the digital legacy of someone who has passed away?

Handling the digital legacy involves closing, memorializing, or managing the deceased person's social media accounts and digital assets. Instructions for managing these can be included in the will or shared with a trusted individual. Many platforms have policies and processes in place for these situations.
