Cremation services will be performed by Adams Funeral Home, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Sweet Caroline’s in Ames on Saturday, March 23 from 4-7 pm.
Bob was born in Ames, Iowa at Mary Greeley Hospital on June 11th, 1952 to Marian Jean (Van Buskirk) and Robert Encell Van Voorhis Sr. He attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Central Junior High, and graduated from Ames High School in 1970. He loved all-night games of Risk with his high school friends, loved playing baseball and collecting baseball cards, and was a Life Scout.
Bob announced at the age of 6 that he was going to be a Cyclone. He attended Iowa State University, double majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication and History and graduating in the spring of 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree. During his college years, in addition to attending Cyclone sporting events, he participated in several intramural sports, went on ski trips with his friends, served as a member of the VEISHEA Central Committee in 1973 and 1974, and was an active member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
Following graduation, his early career led him to Cedar Falls where he worked for General Growth at College Square Mall as the marketing manager. He worked for several advertising agencies, including Rich Penn & Associates, and eventually became the Editor-in-Chief of TeleProfessional Magazine. While at TeleProfessional, Bob had the privilege of traveling internationally. He visited The Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, and France.
While living in Cedar Falls, Bob met Marcy (McCombs) Van Voorhis at a volleyball party hosted by close family friends in Grinnell. They hit it off at the party, and the rest is history. They were united in marriage at St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, and settled in to their first home. Bob and Marcy raised their 3 children in Cedar Falls, and moved to Lake Ponderosa in 2005, followed by a move back to Ames in 2012.
Bob enjoyed many hobbies and pastimes. He was an avid reader and a music enthusiast who enjoyed playing the guitar with friends and occasionally joined the band Baby Moon and the Whitewalls as a guest guitarist. Living in Cedar Falls, his family spent their Friday nights watching Bob play League softball, his team sponsored by The Panther Lounge. He held Football season tickets for many years, and enjoyed tailgating with friends and family before and after the games. Even when watching from home, you would find him in his recliner, Busch Light in hand, decked out from head to toe in Cardinal and Gold to wish his Cyclones good luck.

Robert "Bob" J. Cowley - June 13, 1927 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Ames)
Obituary Preview: Robert “Bob” Joseph Cowley, 96, finally met his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, face to face on Monday, March 4, 2024. He was also welcomed home by his bride, Virginia and people of many tribes and tongues he served throughout his lifetime.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at CrossRoad Baptist Church, 57011 Hwy 30, Ames. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 P.M. in the Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery in Waterloo.  Bob's funeral service will be livestreamed and a link will be available under the Events Section of his obituary on the Adams Funeral Home website.
Born June 13, 1927 in Dows, Iowa, Bob grew up as a farm kid. He pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University in 1952, interrupted by four years of service in the Navy on aircraft carriers as a radio tech from 1945 to 1949. After meeting the love of his life, Virginia, through Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, they married in 1951. They moved to an apartment in Chicago where Robert completed the Moody Bible Institute’s Missionary Aviation program and was ordained at Belden Avenue Baptist Church in Chicago in 1958. After studying French in Paris for 18 months, he moved his family to Africa in 1960, where he spent 33 years as a missionary pilot. He was part of church planting, preaching the Good News of salvation through Jesus, building missionary stations and medical facilities, conducting medical evacuation flights, and supply/transportation flights for the missionaries in Niger, Ivory Coast and Mali.
Bob “retired” from Africa in 1993 and moved to Ames, Iowa, where he and Virginia continued their ministry to international students through Crossroad Baptist Church at the Iowa State campus for approximately 30 more years. They taught English classes, Bible studies, developed relationships and discipled students from countless countries worldwide who came to the US to study. Many of those students returned to their native countries to plant churches and make disciples of Jesus among their own people. Robert’s legacy is one of telling as many people as possible about Jesus’ death on a cross as a complete substitute for the penalty of sin, so that those who trust in Him would receive eternal life, rather than eternal death. He believed and proclaimed from the Bible, “Whoever has the Son (Jesus) has life.” I John 5:12 Bob had a voracious appetite for seafood (including blind robins) and his wife’s five-star cooking. He was always up on the latest technology, even outdoing some of his kids and grandkids with his computer knowledge and skills. He very much enjoyed visits with his children and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by five children: Linda (Ronald) Banghart, Daniel (Priscilla) Cowley, David (Cheryl) Cowley, Judith (Philip) Schmidt, and Joyce (Daniel) Dreisbach; 19 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lilian (Finders) Cowley; his parents, Joseph and Leora (Fairbanks) Cowley; his brother, Frank Cowley; his sister, Cynthia Cowley; and several great-grandchildren.

His family will remember him most for hosting the annual family Labor Day event where he made the best Gingersnap cookies. Family meant everything to Dave; He could be found playing a competitive Rummy card game, supervising Gel Blaster “gun” fights in his yard, wearing his signature cologne, or dressing like a gangster cowboy to get a laugh.
