Obituary Preview: Sandra L. Blake Craparo, 76, of Brigantine, NJ, and Deerfield Beach, FL, and formerly of Carbondale, died peacefully on April 21st, surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of Dr. Thomas J. Craparo; the couple had been married for 43 years.“Sandy” was born, in Elmira, New York, daughter of the late Purl Blake and Katherine Wheeler Blake Wood.  She is a 1964 graduate of Waverly High School and a 1966 graduate of the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing.  After marrying in 1978, Sandy and her husband moved to Carbondale, where together they served the community’s medical needs in a family practice until her retirement in 2008.Sandy was dedicated to her faith and the Community Bible Church of Greenfield family.  With the Lord’s guidance, she overcame life’s challenges and relentlessly shared her strength and hope with so many others on the same journey.  She loved a good joke and was the most patient listener.  She loved to knit and crochet, donating nearly every creation to others.In addition to her husband, Sandy is survived by 5 children and 6 granddaughters: Regina Garuba and husband Anthony and daughter Jessica of Pittston; John Craparo and wife Janelle and daughters Emma and Sophia of Warminster; Katherine Beck and husband Bradley and daughter Megan of Jermyn; Thomas Craparo and wife Gina of Boynton Beach, FL; and Allison Levitt and husband David and daughters Anna and Katelyn of Glenside; her sister: Carol Blake of Waverly, NY; and an uncle: Larry Wilber of Strasburg, VA.In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a niece: Chrissy Blake.The family thanks the staff of the Carbondale Nursing Home for their compassionate and exceptional care of Sandy, and the Community Bible Church family for their love and support always.The funeral will be Thursday, April 28th with services at 10 am in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.  Private interment will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.  Family may call Thursday, from 9 am until service time.

Arthur, died in 2011.Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Robert John and Elizabeth Trotter Baker. Grant attended Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale. Prior to his retirement he worked for Globe Securities as a guard stationed at the General Dynamics Plant in Eynon. Obituary Preview: Maureen Nepa Matylewicz 84, of Jermyn, died Thursday April 14th after a 3 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was preceded in death by her loving husband the Reverend Stephen Matylewicz, who died April 19, 2021, and her first husband, Leo Nepa.Born in Simpson the daughter of the late Maurice and Julia Mehalco  Wayman, she was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School, Carbondale. Maureen wed Leo Nepa in 1956. After his passing she married the Reverend Stephen Matylewicz with whom she spent 50 happily married years. Together they enjoyed a family of “Yours, mine, and ours”, consisting of children: Michael Nepa and wife D’Nan, Carbondale; Lisa Gillette and husband Matthew, Carbondale; Laura Ashman and husband Thomas, Mohrsville; Gary Matylewicz  and wife Melanie, Scranton; Steven Matylewicz, Olyphant;  and the late Julie Martin and her surviving husband Andy Martin. She also had 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.Maureen was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Carbondale. Maureen enjoyed spending summers at her cottage at Elk Lake in Waymart, especially her boat rides, and winters in New Smyrna Beach Florida with her many friends. Maureen was a tremendous cook, a skilled bowler, and a devoted Yankee fan. She also enjoyed sporting events of her children and grandchildren.Maureen was owner of Times Two Consignment Store, Eynon for many years, she was also a member of a neighborhood card club with the same 8 women for over 50 years; it was here that all of Carbondale's problems were solved.In addition to her husbands, Maureen was also preceded in death by her daughter: Julie Matylewicz Martin; her grandchild: Kristopher Bucklaw; and her siblings: Dennis Wayman, Shirley Kohut, and Delores Thompson.The family would especially like to thank caregivers Chrissy, Sara, and Chenoa, as well as the staff of Ellen Memorial and VNA  Hospice who went above and beyond in caring for Maureen.The funeral will be Wednesday April 20th with services at 11 am in Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 River Street, Carbondale by the Rev. Obituary Preview: Edward “Butch” Karosus, 75, of Carbondale , passed away peacefully Tuesday April 12th at the Allied Services Hospice Unit, Scranton.Born in Carbondale, son of the late Edward Karosus and Phyliss Adams Hannas, he was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, and a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, both of Carbondale.  Prior to retirement he owned and operated Butch Karosus Drywall.  Butch loved the outdoors.  In fact, this picture is one of his proudest moments as a sportsman, bagging the 3rd largest mule deer in Montana at the time.  In his recent years he enjoyed watching and betting on harness racing. Obituary Preview: Lee Tonkin, 46, of Simpson, died unexpectedly on Wednesday April 6th at home. Born in Carbondale, son of Pham Thi Y (“E” Tonkin) and Robert Tonkin, of Carbondale, he was a graduate of Carbondale Area High School, Class of 1993.  He was employed as an inspector for the Lockheed Martin Corporation, Archbald.  He was an avid Seattle Seahawks fan.  Lee greatly enjoyed golfing, going to amusement parks, sightseeing, and attending concerts, especially with his daughter Atheana by his side.  She truly was the apple of his eye and brought him tremendous joy, pride, and happiness.  He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.   Surviving are a daughter: Atheana Tonkin, Forest City; a brother: Robert Tonkin, Jr.; a sister: Kelly Grausgruber, Bradenton, FL; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Lyman, 81, of Crystal Lake died Thursday evening, March 31st at Geisinger CMC in Scranton, following an illness.  He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Costello Lyman.Born in Gelatt, son of the late Betty H. Pickering Morris, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale.  Throughout his life, he was employed at Hendricks Manufacturing, Hanson Road Construction and Kaminski Road Construction.Robert, known by his friends and family as Bob, lived a full and happy life. He enjoyed working in the backyard, picking berries, and going fishing. He spent his time bowling at Idle Hour Lanes and watching NASCAR, Penn State Football, and the Dallas Cowboys. Some of his favorite memories with his friends include playing cards on Friday nights and grabbing coffee at “McyDee’s”. Obituary Preview: Thomas J. Beahan, 80, of Carbondale Township, passed away peacefully on March 22nd at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Carol Galavitz.Born in Carbondale, son of the late Eugene and Anna Everling Beahan, he was a 1959 graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale. After graduation he served in the United States Army.  He was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church in Jermyn and also enjoyed attending services at Parker Hill Church.He started his career with Cavage Construction and was instrumental in laying some of the first developmental roads in Pike County. Tom loved construction work and the smell of fresh blacktop. He was then employed by PA Gas and Water Company, and later by UGI prior to his retirement.He spent twenty years following his retirement enjoying volunteering and spending time with the residents of Bethany Village, where he made many friends. He was a wonderful provider and loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed hard work, many home improvement projects, and working outdoors, but mostly he enjoyed his family. He was an extremely giving man who always helped others.The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and staff of Geisinger CMC for their excellent care, treatment and compassion, especially the PCU and palliative care staff during his last days.Tom is also survived by his two sons Thomas “Timothy” Beahan and wife Laurie, Bethany; John Beahan and fiancée Karen Swift, Carbondale Township; two brothers-in-law: Thomas and William Galavitz, both of Carbondale; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Forbes and Ann Marie Kitzmiller.Many thanks also to all of their friends and family for the many phone calls, flowers and food.In Tom’s spirit of always giving, he donated his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry for anatomical study and research.  A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday April 2nd at 10 am at the Primitive Methodist Church, 763 Jefferson Avenue, Jermyn.  Calling hours at the church will begin at 9 am until service time.   Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Bethany Village Memorial Garden, 150 Noble Lane, Bethany, PA 18431 or a charity of the donors choosing.

Obituary Preview: Annabelle Louise Champion Tyrrell, 95, passed from this life on Friday March 4th.  Formerly of 30 Tenth Avenue in Carbondale, she was living with her daughter, Debra, in Spring Grove, after the death of her husband, William R. Tyrrell in 2015. Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Harold and Sarah Dorothea Dimock Champion, Annabelle enjoyed a life made rich by her many friendships and loving family.  She was a long-standing member of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale, Carbondale Women’s Club, a birthday/card club and a dance club. Mrs. Tyrrell married William Tyrrell in January, 1948, and they enjoyed 67 years together, most of it living in their home on 10th Avenue.  They were blessed with four children and, in time, eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.   Her interests and talents were many, including cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, dancing, crafts and enjoying good conversation in the company of others.  A professional beautician she operated her own salon in her home for over four decades. Annabelle was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and never was sparing with her time or affection for them. Many great memories were made during summer reunions around their backyard pool where she made all of her guests feel welcome and appreciated.  Annabelle was truly gifted in making people feel good and important, and she never tired of hosting friends and family for dinners, parties, or just to sit and chat. After her husband, Billy, passed away in December, 2015, Mrs. Tyrrell moved to Spring Grove, where she was under the care of her daughter, Debra with assistance from her other children and extended family. Obituary Preview: William "Bill" Harry Blank, Sr., 70, of Greenfield Twp., died suddenly at home on Thursday February 24th.  He is survived by his loving wife, the former Jane Graziano. Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Fred and Louise Owens Blank. He was a graduate of Lakeland High School.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Bosun's Mate 1st class and proudly commissioned the USS Elmer Montgomery. While serving our country, Bill was able to travel the world and see many places such as France, Italy, and even reaching the Arctic Circle. Upon his return from service, Bill also served as constable and served a short time as a police officer for the township. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a steamfitter with the United Association Local 524 of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, Scranton. Bill was an extremely hard worker and took great pride in his trade as a steamfitter which he performed with perfection.  Bill was a very active member of the Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Company for well over 40 years, where he could often be heard signing on the air as Chief 24-C, driving his beloved Tanker 24. Bill was also a member of the American Legion Post 221, Carbondale. Bill enjoyed collecting guns, building models, making soppressata, and spending time with family and friends. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his pride and joy, his two grandchildren. He was very proud to be their "Poppy". Bill was a kind man with a big heart and was always there to help others, whether it be family, neighbors, the fire company, or the township. He will be greatly missed by everyone. Shaw, 87, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday February 17th surrounded by his family.   He was married for over 60 years to his wife and best friend Mary Ann Zeskowski Shaw.Thomas was a Carbondale native, born on May 26, 1934, Son of the late Clarence T. and Helena Judge Shaw.  Tom was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, class of 1952.  He was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed in the U. S. and France.  After his discharge from the service, he joined his father in operating Shaw’s Stationary in Carbondale, a longtime local business, and he managed the store after his father’s retirement. He was a lifetime member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Columbia Hose Company #5 and the American Legion Post 221, all of Carbondale. Obituary Preview: Lucille C. Toolan, 89, of Carbondale, died Tuesday, February 15th at home surrounded by family. She was the widow of Robert Patrick Toolan, who died December 23, 2014.Born in Carbondale, the daughter of the late Peter and Lucille Healey Cummings, she was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. She was a 1950 graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale. Lucille was employed as an operator for the Bell Telephone Company and later as a clerk for JCPenney Department Store in Carbondale before becoming a full-time mom and homemaker.Her world revolved around her family and she relished in doting on her grandsons. Lucille loved to be outdoors and especially delighted in days spent at Elk Lake or Newton Lake. Her favorite pastimes were beach vacations, shopping (particularly at Boscov’s), attending musicals and concerts and puttering about her home. Animal rescue was near and dear to her heart. She took in numerous pets throughout her life and was a supporter of ASPCA and Humane Society of America.Lucille’s smile and warm demeanor lit up a room making everyone who met her an instant friend. Obituary Preview: John H. “Jack” Byrnes, 80, of Carbondale, died Tuesday, February 1st at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.  He was the husband of the former Sharon Hobbs.; the couple were married for 53 years. Born in Orange, NJ, he was the only son of the late John and Loretta Foran Byrnes.  He grew up in Morris Plains and Morris Twp., NJ.  He was a 1959 graduate of Morristown High School.  He was a United States Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Jersey Central Power and Light Company. In addition to his wife, also surviving are two daughters: Shannon Cheripka and husband Dennis, Powder Springs, GA; Meghan Higdon and husband Guy, Carbondale; five grandchildren: Guy, Mason, and Ellie Higdon and Isabelle and Paige Cheripka; and several nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Paul Joseph Gallagher, 68, of Newton Lake, succumbed to a sudden cardiac arrest at home on Tuesday February 1st, cutting a life lived for his family unexpectedly short.Born and raised in the Green Ridge neighborhood of Scranton, Paul was son to John “Johnny” Gallagher and Mary Manley Gallagher. He attended both Scranton Preparatory School (class of 1971) and Franklin & Marshall College (class of 1975) on academic scholarships. At College, Paul was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and played point guard on the school’s basketball team before adopting a position as an assistant coach. Paul parlayed his scholastic and extracurricular achievements to subsequently earn an MBA in Finance from Cornell University.With an MBA in hand, Paul began his professional career in the service of his community, working for the Scranton School District. It was in this role that he met his future wife of 40 years – Mary Kathryn Haran. After moving to Connecticut in 1979, he then began what would become an impressive 41-year career in Financial Services. In addition to numerous professional and personal accomplishments, including being the first elected expatriate member of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, his career afforded him the opportunity to live in both Asia & Europe and travel to many unique and diverse places. Paul was fortunate enough to visit over 22 countries, often with family and friends in tow. Since returning to Pennsylvania full time in 2009 Paul also took great pride in his work on the Greater Carbondale YMCA board.Paul was an avid runner. In his life he completed 7 marathons, the most recent being the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach in 2014. Paul loved sports, especially basketball and football. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame Football with a growing soft spot for the Nittany Lions. Not only did Paul enjoy sports from a fan’s perspective, in his kids’ earlier years he could often be seen pacing the sidelines of soccer fields and basketball courts as a winning coach. Though his work schedule was often demanding he always made it a priority to find time for family. Paul was incredibly proud of all 3 of his children and delighted to welcome both a granddaughter and grandson over the last 3 years.In addition to his wife Mary, Paul leaves behind three children - Casey Haran Gallagher, of Hong Kong, Paul Garrett Gallagher, of Sanford, North Carolina, and Sarah Jane Gallagher, of Arlington, Virginia; his older brother Bobby and wife Barbara Gallagher of Harrisburg; his cousins Tom Gallagher, of Scranton and Jack Gallagher, of Annapolis, Maryland; and multiple nieces and nephews. Paul also leaves behind two grandchildren, Kenzie Hope Gallagher, 3, of Sanford, North Carolina and Caden Joseph Almeida, 8 months, of Hong Kong.The funeral will be Saturday, February 12th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Obituary Preview: Stanley John Turonis was called to heaven on the 29th of January 2022. Stanley was born on the 8th of February 1939 in Carbondale, to the late Jane Roman Turonis and Stanley Turonis.Stanley passed away peacefully in his son Stanley John Turonis III’s home, surrounded by his sons Stanley Turonis and Shawn Turonis and his daughter in-laws Tonya Turonis and Kelly Turonis, those whom he held dear.A United States Air Force veteran, Stanley joined the Washington D.C Metropolitan Police Department and served with the Special Operations Division - Motor 11, where he made his family proud and his accomplishments were grand. He was privileged to assist with providing security and motorcade support of transporting numerous U.S presidents and dignitaries from around the world, throughout the Washington D.C. area. Beyond working, Stanley enjoyed working on cars, spending time with his friends at the P.G. Plaza and grabbing a bite to eat at McDonalds. Stanley was known by several names, Grandpa, Pop, Stanley, and Nanny. All that knew Stanley were fond of his kindness and sense of humor. He was treasured and will be missed by many.Surviving are his sons: Shawn Turonis and Stanley Turonis III and his daughter in-laws: Tonya Turonis and Kelly Turonis; his grandchildren Shawn Turonis, Ashley Turonis, Chance Turonis, and Stanley Turonis IV and great grandchildren Weston Tarantino, Myles Tarantino.   He was preceded in death by his step son, Billy Yakely Jr.; a brother, Peter V. Obituary Preview: Nicholas “Nick” Hanchak, of Archbald, died unexpectedly Saturday January 15th at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. He is survived by his second wife, Maureen Gursky Kielar Hanchak; and he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Geisshardt Hanchak in 1997.Born in Mayfield, son of the late Andrew and Dora Guzey Hanchak, he was a member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, Jermyn. He was a graduate of Mayfield High School and the University of Scranton. He was a US Navy veteran, having attained the rank of Petty Officer while serving aboard the USS Ranger.   Prior to retirement, he was employed as a manager in the Claims Department at Bell Telephone. He previously served on the board of directors at St. Tikhon’s Monastery, and he was a former member of the Elmhurst Lions Club. He was a literacy volunteer for SCOLA and also a volunteer radio reader for the Lackawanna Blind Association. Nick was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He enjoyed traveling, dining at restaurants and was happiest spending time with his family and friends. Nick loved playing golf and was a member of the Senior Golf League at Scottish Glen Golf Course. He enjoyed watching baseball and was fondly known as “the Commish” organizing family fantasy football leagues. When he wasn’t watching sports, he enjoyed Hallmark and classic movies. His greatest pride was in all his grandchildren’s accomplishments and was at every school and sporting event he could attend. Nick lived a life of honor, love and kindness and was always there when you needed him. Meyer Hospice House, Palm Coast, FL.  He is survived by his wife and best friend of 66 years, the former Marge “Midge” Idason.Born in Philadelphia, son of the late Bolie and Anna Budroe Gesiskie, he was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  He was a graduate of LaSalle High School, Philadelphia, and he attended LaSalle College, Philadelphia, and Marywood College, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration; he also earned his LPN and Nursing Home Administrator certificates.  He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving as a combat engineer.
