In his 2 years and 8 months on this earth, Brennan managed to touch our lives, teach us about love and perseverance, and leave a lasting impression that we will cherish forever.

Obituary Preview: Sandra L. Blake Craparo, 76, of Brigantine, NJ, and Deerfield Beach, FL, and formerly of Carbondale, died peacefully on April 21st, surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of Dr. Thomas J. Craparo; the couple had been married for 43 years.
“Sandy” was born, in Elmira, New York, daughter of the late Purl Blake and Katherine Wheeler Blake Wood.  She is a 1964 graduate of Waverly High School and a 1966 graduate of the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing.  After marrying in 1978, Sandy and her husband moved to Carbondale, where together they served the community’s medical needs in a family practice until her retirement in 2008.
Sandy was dedicated to her faith and the Community Bible Church of Greenfield family.  With the Lord’s guidance, she overcame life’s challenges and relentlessly shared her strength and hope with so many others on the same journey.  She loved a good joke and was the most patient listener.  She loved to knit and crochet, donating nearly every creation to others.
In addition to her husband, Sandy is survived by 5 children and 6 granddaughters: Regina Garuba and husband Anthony and daughter Jessica of Pittston; John Craparo and wife Janelle and daughters Emma and Sophia of Warminster; Katherine Beck and husband Bradley and daughter Megan of Jermyn; Thomas Craparo and wife Gina of Boynton Beach, FL; and Allison Levitt and husband David and daughters Anna and Katelyn of Glenside; her sister: Carol Blake of Waverly, NY; and an uncle: Larry Wilber of Strasburg, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a niece: Chrissy Blake.
The family thanks the staff of the Carbondale Nursing Home for their compassionate and exceptional care of Sandy, and the Community Bible Church family for their love and support always.
The funeral will be Thursday, April 28th with services at 10 am in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.  Private interment will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.  Family may call Thursday, from 9 am until service time.

Obituary Preview: Grant M. Baker, 63, of Carbondale died Monday April 18th at the Wayne Memorial Hospital. His wife, the former Denise L. Arthur, died in 2011.
Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Robert John and Elizabeth Trotter Baker. Grant attended Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale. Prior to his retirement he worked for Globe Securities as a guard stationed at the General Dynamics Plant in Eynon. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Surviving are two sons: Grant Baker, Jr. and companion Laura LaRusso, Peckville; Shawn Baker, Carbondale; a daughter: Lindsey Baker and companion Charles Williams, Carbondale; a sister: Beth Johnson and boyfriend Daniel Ritzco, Jessup; two brothers: Terrance Baker and wife Evelyn; and Robert Baker and wife Shirley, all of Carbondale; 7 grandchildren: John; Grant III; Robyn; Mackenzie; Haven; Jamie Lynn; and Harley; and several nieces and nephews .
He was preceded in death by two brothers: James and Frank.

Thomas Richard Toolan, Jr. - Unknown - April 17, 2022

Obituary Preview: Thomas Richard Toolan, Jr., 83, of Carbondale, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 17th at Geisinger CMC, Scranton; he would have celebrated his 84th birthday on May 31st.  He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Mackrell; the couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Thomas Richard Toolan Sr. and Helen Sample Toolan, he was a graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale.  He was a veteran of the Pennsylvania National Guard and a member of the American Legion Post 610, Jermyn.  During his career, Tom worked for Shulton Old Spice, Dearborn Glass, Hendricks Manufacturing, and Gentex.  He then managed a Kayo Gas Station, and then retired from Specialty Records, Olyphant.
The family would like to thank the Carbondale Fire Department, Cottage Hose Ambulance Company, and the William Walker Ambulance Company for all of their efforts to aid Tom.
Also surviving are four daughters: Annmarie Kovaleski and husband Joseph; Susan Price and husband John; Maureen Martin and husband Jeffery; Karen Jones and husband Jeffery;10 grandchildren: Erin and Adam Kovaleski; John, Zackery, and Kayla Price; Jacquline, Elizabeth, and Jeffery Martin; Megan and Paige Jones; 7 great grandchildren: Aubrey; Lucas; Aria (due August 2022); Brice; Remedy; Deagan; Spencer; and Zander; a brother: Joseph Toolan, Johnson City, NY; several nieces and nephews.

Maureen Nepa Matylewicz - Unknown - April 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: Maureen Nepa Matylewicz 84, of Jermyn, died Thursday April 14th after a 3 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was preceded in death by her loving husband the Reverend Stephen Matylewicz, who died April 19, 2021, and her first husband, Leo Nepa.
Born in Simpson the daughter of the late Maurice and Julia Mehalco  Wayman, she was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School, Carbondale. Maureen wed Leo Nepa in 1956. After his passing she married the Reverend Stephen Matylewicz with whom she spent 50 happily married years. Together they enjoyed a family of “Yours, mine, and ours”, consisting of children: Michael Nepa and wife D’Nan, Carbondale; Lisa Gillette and husband Matthew, Carbondale; Laura Ashman and husband Thomas, Mohrsville; Gary Matylewicz  and wife Melanie, Scranton; Steven Matylewicz, Olyphant;  and the late Julie Martin and her surviving husband Andy Martin. She also had 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maureen was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Carbondale. Maureen enjoyed spending summers at her cottage at Elk Lake in Waymart, especially her boat rides, and winters in New Smyrna Beach Florida with her many friends. Maureen was a tremendous cook, a skilled bowler, and a devoted Yankee fan. She also enjoyed sporting events of her children and grandchildren.
Maureen was owner of Times Two Consignment Store, Eynon for many years, she was also a member of a neighborhood card club with the same 8 women for over 50 years; it was here that all of Carbondale's problems were solved.
In addition to her husbands, Maureen was also preceded in death by her daughter: Julie Matylewicz Martin; her grandchild: Kristopher Bucklaw; and her siblings: Dennis Wayman, Shirley Kohut, and Delores Thompson.
The family would especially like to thank caregivers Chrissy, Sara, and Chenoa, as well as the staff of Ellen Memorial and VNA  Hospice who went above and beyond in caring for Maureen.
The funeral will be Wednesday April 20th with services at 11 am in Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 River Street, Carbondale by the Rev. Edward "Butch" Karosus - Unknown - April 12, 2022

Obituary Preview: Edward “Butch” Karosus, 75, of Carbondale , passed away peacefully Tuesday April 12th at the Allied Services Hospice Unit, Scranton.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Edward Karosus and Phyliss Adams Hannas, he was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, and a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, both of Carbondale.  Prior to retirement he owned and operated Butch Karosus Drywall.  Butch loved the outdoors.  In fact, this picture is one of his proudest moments as a sportsman, bagging the 3rd largest mule deer in Montana at the time.  In his recent years he enjoyed watching and betting on harness racing. He cared little if he won or lost (he mostly lost); he simply loved watching them.
The family is deeply grateful for the kind, compassionate care that GCMC and Allied Services Hospice provided over the last few weeks.
Surviving are a daughter: Kelly Cook, Simpson; a son: Christopher Karosus and wife Andrea, Fell Twp.; two grandchildren: Gianna Gallo and Alivia Karosus; a sister: Catherine Gallagher, Endicott, NY; two nieces: Marijo and Stephanie; cousins; friends; and his partner in crime, granddog Sparky.

Obituary Preview: Lee Tonkin, 46, of Simpson, died unexpectedly on Wednesday April 6th at home. Born in Carbondale, son of Pham Thi Y (“E” Tonkin) and Robert Tonkin, of Carbondale, he was a graduate of Carbondale Area High School, Class of 1993.  He was employed as an inspector for the Lockheed Martin Corporation, Archbald.  He was an avid Seattle Seahawks fan.  Lee greatly enjoyed golfing, going to amusement parks, sightseeing, and attending concerts, especially with his daughter Atheana by his side.  She truly was the apple of his eye and brought him tremendous joy, pride, and happiness.  He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.   Surviving are a daughter: Atheana Tonkin, Forest City; a brother: Robert Tonkin, Jr.; a sister: Kelly Grausgruber, Bradenton, FL; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Obituary Preview: Robert J. Lyman, 81, of Crystal Lake died Thursday evening, March 31st at Geisinger CMC in Scranton, following an illness.  He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen Costello Lyman.
Born in Gelatt, son of the late Betty H. Pickering Morris, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale.  Throughout his life, he was employed at Hendricks Manufacturing, Hanson Road Construction and Kaminski Road Construction.
Robert, known by his friends and family as Bob, lived a full and happy life. He enjoyed working in the backyard, picking berries, and going fishing. He spent his time bowling at Idle Hour Lanes and watching NASCAR, Penn State Football, and the Dallas Cowboys. Some of his favorite memories with his friends include playing cards on Friday nights and grabbing coffee at “McyDee’s”. Bob especially loved the time he shared with his wife and family.
Also surviving are a daughter: Robin Iyoob and son-in-law, David Iyoob; two grandchildren: Katelyn and Cory; an aunt: Joan Potter; nieces and nephews: Kim Bowman, Brian Telford, and Bonnie Williamson-Pappacena; and several cousins.

Thomas J. Beahan - Unknown - March 22, 2022

Obituary Preview: Thomas J. Beahan, 80, of Carbondale Township, passed away peacefully on March 22nd at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Carol Galavitz.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Eugene and Anna Everling Beahan, he was a 1959 graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale. After graduation he served in the United States Army.  He was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church in Jermyn and also enjoyed attending services at Parker Hill Church.
He started his career with Cavage Construction and was instrumental in laying some of the first developmental roads in Pike County. Tom loved construction work and the smell of fresh blacktop. He was then employed by PA Gas and Water Company, and later by UGI prior to his retirement.
He spent twenty years following his retirement enjoying volunteering and spending time with the residents of Bethany Village, where he made many friends. He was a wonderful provider and loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed hard work, many home improvement projects, and working outdoors, but mostly he enjoyed his family. He was an extremely giving man who always helped others.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and staff of Geisinger CMC for their excellent care, treatment and compassion, especially the PCU and palliative care staff during his last days.
Tom is also survived by his two sons Thomas “Timothy” Beahan and wife Laurie, Bethany; John Beahan and fiancée Karen Swift, Carbondale Township; two brothers-in-law: Thomas and William Galavitz, both of Carbondale; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Forbes and Ann Marie Kitzmiller.
Many thanks also to all of their friends and family for the many phone calls, flowers and food.
In Tom’s spirit of always giving, he donated his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry for anatomical study and research.  A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday April 2nd at 10 am at the Primitive Methodist Church, 763 Jefferson Avenue, Jermyn.  Calling hours at the church will begin at 9 am until service time.   Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.

Obituary Preview: Annabelle Louise Champion Tyrrell, 95, passed from this life on Friday March 4th.  Formerly of 30 Tenth Avenue in Carbondale, she was living with her daughter, Debra, in Spring Grove, after the death of her husband, William R. Tyrrell in 2015. Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Harold and Sarah Dorothea Dimock Champion, Annabelle enjoyed a life made rich by her many friendships and loving family.  She was a long-standing member of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale, Carbondale Women’s Club, a birthday/card club and a dance club. Mrs. Tyrrell married William Tyrrell in January, 1948, and they enjoyed 67 years together, most of it living in their home on 10th Avenue.  They were blessed with four children and, in time, eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.   Her interests and talents were many, including cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, dancing, crafts and enjoying good conversation in the company of others.  A professional beautician she operated her own salon in her home for over four decades. Annabelle was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and never was sparing with her time or affection for them. Many great memories were made during summer reunions around their backyard pool where she made all of her guests feel welcome and appreciated.  Annabelle was truly gifted in making people feel good and important, and she never tired of hosting friends and family for dinners, parties, or just to sit and chat. After her husband, Billy, passed away in December, 2015, Mrs. Tyrrell moved to Spring Grove, where she was under the care of her daughter, Debra with assistance from her other children and extended family. Surviving are her four children: Debra Baum, Spring Grove; Patricia Summerhill  (William), Denver, CO; Lauren Stouffer (Michael), Harrisburg; William Robert Tyrrell, Jr. (Margaret), Carlisle; 11 grandchildren: Teresa Clark (Jamie), Shady Shores, TX; David Baum (Danielle), Spring Grove; Kathryn Fahringer (Ron), Spring Grove; Kevin Baum (Jessica), Spring Grove; Karen O’Donnell (Thomas), Papillion, NE; Jeffrey Summerhill (Molly), Denver, CO; Matthew Stouffer (Megan), Harrisburg; Meghan Lasinski (Joshua), St. Louis, MO; Nicholas Tyrrell (Nicki), San Francisco, CA; Ashley Tyrrell, Carlisle; Angela Weber (Nathan), Camp Hill; 17 great grandchildren: Jarrett and Jacob Clark; Macey, Davis and Easton Baum; Jordan Baum; Levi and Bryar Baum; William, Anna Kate and Sarah O’Donnell; Penn and Warren Summerhill; Jayna and Addison Stouffer; and Annabelle and Gwendolen Lasinski; a  brother: Thomas Champion (Mimi), Auburn, NY; a sister-in-law: Bonnie Chaballa (George) and beloved niece, Beth all of Carbondale; a brother-in-law: Daniel Acosta of New York City, NY; a sister-in-law: Shirley Tyrrell of Waverly, NY; and  good friends: Anne Price and Susan Postlewaithe, both of Carbondale. Obituary Preview: William "Bill" Harry Blank, Sr., 70, of Greenfield Twp., died suddenly at home on Thursday February 24th.  He is survived by his loving wife, the former Jane Graziano. Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Fred and Louise Owens Blank. He was a graduate of Lakeland High School.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Bosun's Mate 1st class and proudly commissioned the USS Elmer Montgomery. While serving our country, Bill was able to travel the world and see many places such as France, Italy, and even reaching the Arctic Circle. Upon his return from service, Bill also served as constable and served a short time as a police officer for the township. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a steamfitter with the United Association Local 524 of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, Scranton. Bill was an extremely hard worker and took great pride in his trade as a steamfitter which he performed with perfection.  Bill was a very active member of the Greenfield Township Volunteer Fire Company for well over 40 years, where he could often be heard signing on the air as Chief 24-C, driving his beloved Tanker 24. Bill was also a member of the American Legion Post 221, Carbondale. Bill enjoyed collecting guns, building models, making soppressata, and spending time with family and friends. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his pride and joy, his two grandchildren. He was very proud to be their "Poppy". Bill was a kind man with a big heart and was always there to help others, whether it be family, neighbors, the fire company, or the township. He will be greatly missed by everyone. Also surviving are a son: William Blank, Jr. and wife Marisa, Peckville; two grandchildren: Sophia and Dominic Blank; a brother: David "Randy" Blank and wife Bev, Greenfield Twp., and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was also preceded in death by two brothers: Larry and Fred “Bud” Blank; and a sister: Linda Blank. Thomas F. Shaw - Unknown - February 17, 2022

Obituary Preview: Thomas F. Shaw, 87, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday February 17th surrounded by his family.   He was married for over 60 years to his wife and best friend Mary Ann Zeskowski Shaw.
Thomas was a Carbondale native, born on May 26, 1934, Son of the late Clarence T. and Helena Judge Shaw.  Tom was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, class of 1952.  He was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed in the U. S. and France.  After his discharge from the service, he joined his father in operating Shaw’s Stationary in Carbondale, a longtime local business, and he managed the store after his father’s retirement. He was a lifetime member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Columbia Hose Company #5 and the American Legion Post 221, all of Carbondale. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling and frequent trips to the casinos.
In addition to his wife Mary Ann, he is survived by his five children: Deborah Krueger and her husband Andrew; Arleen Shaw-Mikloiche and her husband Stephen Mikloiche; Joanne Shaw; Thomas Shaw and his longtime companion Angela Pollits; and Beth Shaw and her husband Donald Becker; his five grandchildren: Damien, Noah, Nathen, Elyssa and Colten Shaw; his siblings: Robert Shaw; Helene Gilroy; and Mary Ellen Shaw; and fourteen nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his sister Joan Lubash.

Obituary Preview: Lucille C. Toolan, 89, of Carbondale, died Tuesday, February 15th at home surrounded by family. She was the widow of Robert Patrick Toolan, who died December 23, 2014.
Born in Carbondale, the daughter of the late Peter and Lucille Healey Cummings, she was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. She was a 1950 graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale. Lucille was employed as an operator for the Bell Telephone Company and later as a clerk for JCPenney Department Store in Carbondale before becoming a full-time mom and homemaker.
Her world revolved around her family and she relished in doting on her grandsons. Lucille loved to be outdoors and especially delighted in days spent at Elk Lake or Newton Lake. Her favorite pastimes were beach vacations, shopping (particularly at Boscov’s), attending musicals and concerts and puttering about her home. Animal rescue was near and dear to her heart. She took in numerous pets throughout her life and was a supporter of ASPCA and Humane Society of America.
Lucille’s smile and warm demeanor lit up a room making everyone who met her an instant friend. She was easygoing, thoughtful and fun-loving.
Surviving are a son: Tim Toolan and wife Kristina, Greenfield Twp.; a daughter: Barbara Toolan, Carbondale; two grandsons: Joshua and Noah Toolan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter: Hannah Kathryn Toolan; and a brother: Harold Cummings.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all of Lucille’s caregivers. Special thanks to close family friend Sondra Murphy for her help and support over the past year.

Born in Waller, TX, daughter of the late Monte and Radi Russell Goolsby, she was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  Prior to retirement, she was employed as a seamstress in several local garment factories.  She was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union.  She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the DAV.
Surviving are two daughters: Barbara March, Kennesaw, GA; Salina “Sally” Sayer, Palm Beach Gardens, FL; 7  grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Frank Lee; a son-in-law: Dr. Douglas March; and two brothers: Monte and Raymond Goolsby.

In addition to his wife, also surviving are two daughters: Shannon Cheripka and husband Dennis, Powder Springs, GA; Meghan Higdon and husband Guy, Carbondale; five grandchildren: Guy, Mason, and Ellie Higdon and Isabelle and Paige Cheripka; and several nieces and nephews. Paul Joseph Gallagher - Unknown - February 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: Paul Joseph Gallagher, 68, of Newton Lake, succumbed to a sudden cardiac arrest at home on Tuesday February 1st, cutting a life lived for his family unexpectedly short.
Born and raised in the Green Ridge neighborhood of Scranton, Paul was son to John “Johnny” Gallagher and Mary Manley Gallagher. He attended both Scranton Preparatory School (class of 1971) and Franklin & Marshall College (class of 1975) on academic scholarships. At College, Paul was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and played point guard on the school’s basketball team before adopting a position as an assistant coach. Paul parlayed his scholastic and extracurricular achievements to subsequently earn an MBA in Finance from Cornell University.
With an MBA in hand, Paul began his professional career in the service of his community, working for the Scranton School District. It was in this role that he met his future wife of 40 years – Mary Kathryn Haran. After moving to Connecticut in 1979, he then began what would become an impressive 41-year career in Financial Services. In addition to numerous professional and personal accomplishments, including being the first elected expatriate member of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, his career afforded him the opportunity to live in both Asia & Europe and travel to many unique and diverse places. Paul was fortunate enough to visit over 22 countries, often with family and friends in tow. Since returning to Pennsylvania full time in 2009 Paul also took great pride in his work on the Greater Carbondale YMCA board.
Paul was an avid runner. In his life he completed 7 marathons, the most recent being the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach in 2014. Paul loved sports, especially basketball and football. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame Football with a growing soft spot for the Nittany Lions. Not only did Paul enjoy sports from a fan’s perspective, in his kids’ earlier years he could often be seen pacing the sidelines of soccer fields and basketball courts as a winning coach. Though his work schedule was often demanding he always made it a priority to find time for family. Paul was incredibly proud of all 3 of his children and delighted to welcome both a granddaughter and grandson over the last 3 years.
In addition to his wife Mary, Paul leaves behind three children - Casey Haran Gallagher, of Hong Kong, Paul Garrett Gallagher, of Sanford, North Carolina, and Sarah Jane Gallagher, of Arlington, Virginia; his older brother Bobby and wife Barbara Gallagher of Harrisburg; his cousins Tom Gallagher, of Scranton and Jack Gallagher, of Annapolis, Maryland; and multiple nieces and nephews. Paul also leaves behind two grandchildren, Kenzie Hope Gallagher, 3, of Sanford, North Carolina and Caden Joseph Almeida, 8 months, of Hong Kong.
The funeral will be Saturday, February 12th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Obituary Preview: Stanley John Turonis was called to heaven on the 29th of January 2022. Stanley was born on the 8th of February 1939 in Carbondale, to the late Jane Roman Turonis and Stanley Turonis.
Stanley passed away peacefully in his son Stanley John Turonis III’s home, surrounded by his sons Stanley Turonis and Shawn Turonis and his daughter in-laws Tonya Turonis and Kelly Turonis, those whom he held dear.
A United States Air Force veteran, Stanley joined the Washington D.C Metropolitan Police Department and served with the Special Operations Division - Motor 11, where he made his family proud and his accomplishments were grand. He was privileged to assist with providing security and motorcade support of transporting numerous U.S presidents and dignitaries from around the world, throughout the Washington D.C. area. Beyond working, Stanley enjoyed working on cars, spending time with his friends at the P.G. Plaza and grabbing a bite to eat at McDonalds. Stanley was known by several names, Grandpa, Pop, Stanley, and Nanny. All that knew Stanley were fond of his kindness and sense of humor. He was treasured and will be missed by many.
Surviving are his sons: Shawn Turonis and Stanley Turonis III and his daughter in-laws: Tonya Turonis and Kelly Turonis; his grandchildren Shawn Turonis, Ashley Turonis, Chance Turonis, and Stanley Turonis IV and great grandchildren Weston Tarantino, Myles Tarantino.   He was preceded in death by his step son, Billy Yakely Jr.; a brother, Peter V. Turnois; and his former wife Jeanne Stackhouse Turonis.
The funeral will be Saturday February 5th with a blessing service at 10:30 am in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.  Stanley will then be laid to rest at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill, next to his mother, father, and brother.  Friends may call Saturday morning, from 9 am to 10:30 am.

Born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Juan E. and Maria Olivera Velez.  Before moving to Florida after retirement in 2008, she was employed in management at the New Yorker Hotel in New York City.  She was a beloved wife, mother, and friend who devoted most of her life to caring for and raising her six children.  Gladys had a great sense of humor.  She loved to play computer games, complete word search puzzles, and watch game shows in her spare time.  She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
Surviving are her six children: Michael Samuel and wife Pilar; Kevin Samuel and wife Natasha; Wesley Samuel, III and wife Toni; Thirdson Samuel and wife Vernessa; Junie Kacer and husband Peter; and Nia Samuel; 18 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers: John and William Velez.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, February 5th at 2:30 pm in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.  Interment, Hopedale Moravian Cemetery, Newfoundland.  A viewing will be held Saturday, from 1 to 3 pm.

Born in Mayfield, son of the late Andrew and Dora Guzey Hanchak, he was a member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, Jermyn. He was a graduate of Mayfield High School and the University of Scranton. He was a US Navy veteran, having attained the rank of Petty Officer while serving aboard the USS Ranger.   Prior to retirement, he was employed as a manager in the Claims Department at Bell Telephone. He previously served on the board of directors at St. Tikhon’s Monastery, and he was a former member of the Elmhurst Lions Club. He was a literacy volunteer for SCOLA and also a volunteer radio reader for the Lackawanna Blind Association. Nick was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He enjoyed traveling, dining at restaurants and was happiest spending time with his family and friends. Nick loved playing golf and was a member of the Senior Golf League at Scottish Glen Golf Course. He enjoyed watching baseball and was fondly known as “the Commish” organizing family fantasy football leagues. When he wasn’t watching sports, he enjoyed Hallmark and classic movies. His greatest pride was in all his grandchildren’s accomplishments and was at every school and sporting event he could attend. Nick lived a life of honor, love and kindness and was always there when you needed him. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Also surviving are a son: Dr. Nicholas Hanchak and wife Patricia; a daughter: Kimberly Lasewicz and husband Mark; four grandchildren: Nicholas Hanchak; Stephanie Hanchak; Mark Lasewicz Jr. and fiancée Michelle Burkholder and Matthew Lasewicz, Esquire and wife Erica; two step-daughters: Dr. Katherine Passaro and husband Dr. Vincent; Kendall Gessig and husband Bill; five step-grandchildren: Vincent, Michael, and Nicolas Passaro; Joseph and James Gessig; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Jack, Andrew, and Bill Hanchak.
The funeral will be Thursday January 20th at St. Michael's Orthodox Church, 305 Walnut St. Jermyn. Friends may call Thursday at the church from 9am to 10am. A funeral mass will follow for family, officiated by the Very Rev. John Kowalczyk, Archpriest. Born in Philadelphia, son of the late Bolie and Anna Budroe Gesiskie, he was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  He was a graduate of LaSalle High School, Philadelphia, and he attended LaSalle College, Philadelphia, and Marywood College, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration; he also earned his LPN and Nursing Home Administrator certificates.  He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, serving as a combat engineer. Prior to retirement, Vincent was employed as the Administrator of the Gesiskie Nursing Home, Waymart; he also worked as a case manager for the Wayne County Public Assistance Office.
Vincent was a proud father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle.  He was an ardent fan of his children’s and grandchildren’s sports endeavors that ranged from Western Wayne, Honesdale, Pleasant Valley, Mainland, FL, and Wooten, MD High Schools, Penn State, East Stroudsburg, Mount St. Mary’s, Albright, Wilkes, Kings College, and Rutgers.  Vincent was also an avid Philadelphia sports fan, golfer, and bowler.   Active in his community, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s Church, Waymart and the Western Wayne PTA, where he assisted with the food lunch program; he also served as a member of the Western Wayne School District Board of Education.
Also surviving are five children: Anne Heebner; John Gesiskie (Kathleen); Cathy Walker (Mark); Vincent Gesiskie, Jr.  (Tami); Maggie Smith (Dale); grandchildren: Josh Heebner (Jess); John Heebner (Lesley); Nikki Gesiskie; Jamie Negron (Chris); Jackie Gesiskie; Kallie Walker (Ethan); Kacie Byle (Taylor); Ellie, Grace, and Lily Gesiskie; Ryan Smith; Zach Smith (Sara); and Clayre Smith; great grandchildren: Kyla and Damon Heebner; Cole and Charlotte Negron; Charles Byle; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister: Catherine Gesiskie; and a brother: Philip Gesiskie.

In his brief time, Brennan was the epitome of love. Through every trial and tribulation he faced, he remained joyful, brave, and strong. His incredible strength and resilience were nothing short of remarkable, especially for someone so young. His unwavering spirit has taught us that we, too, should remain steadfast in the face of adversity.

As we stand in the wake of Brennan's passing, we must not allow our hearts to be filled with despair. Instead, let us focus on the beautiful memories that Brennan has left behind. Let us remember the joy he brought into our lives, the laughter he elicited from us, and the love he forged within our hearts.

Brennan was truly his family's pride and joy. As his uncle, I can attest to the strong bond he and his parents shared. Each time we think of Brennan, our hearts may ache with longing, but they are also filled with profound gratitude for the time we had with this beautiful soul.

In the days to come, as we grieve and lament Brennan's departure, let us also remember his lessons of courage, of resilience, and most importantly, of love. Let us carry his memory and spirit within us, honoring his legacy in every way we can.

Brennan Michael Bravender may have left us physically, but his spirit and the lessons he left behind will live on in each and every person who was fortunate enough to know him and be touched by him.
